Sheffield United are set to receive a financial boost following confirmation of former striker Will Lankshear’s move to Middlesbrough.
Boro, who will be hoping to mount another promotion push this coming season, confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old from Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday morning. He has signed a five-year deal at the Riverside.
It has been reported by The Northern Echo that Lankshear has joined the Championship outfit for an initial fee of £8million, with a further £12m of performance-related add-ons taking the total potential value of the deal to £20m.
It has also been reported that Spurs have inserted a sell-on clause into the deal that will see them receive 20 per cent of any fees that Boro receive for Lankshear in the future. The striker spent last season on loan at Oxford United, scoring 11 Championship goals, meaning Boro will be hopeful of him providing the attacking firepower they often lacked last season.
Confirmation of Lankshear’s move to the Riverside Stadium will be of both interest and benefit to the Blades because the striker came through their academy before joining Tottenham in August 2022.
As part of the deal that saw him swap Bramall Lane for north London in a £2 million transfer, United inserted a sell-on clause, meaning they are entitled to a percentage of the fee Boro have paid to sign the former West Bromwich Albion loanee.
The sell-on windfall will be more than welcome at Bramall Lane, with United now no longer benefiting from parachute payments.
Following confirmation of his move to Middlesbrough, Lankshear told the club’s website: “Middlesbrough is such a massive club over the years; I deem it to be a Premier League club.
"The project here really excites me. I can’t wait to get started and be part of the journey, and get this club back where it belongs.
“I feel like now is the best time in my career. I’m ready to hit the ground running and help this club.”
