Sheffield United have reportedly strengthened their academy ranks with the signing of defender Malakai Suleiman from Tottenham Hotspur.
According to The Talent Hunter, the Blades have signed the defender after he rejected offers from ‘multiple other top Category One and Two’ academies. The 16-year-old featured for the Blades’ Under-18s last Saturday, helping them seal a 4-1 win away from home against Swansea City.
Named on the teamsheet as a trialist, Suleiman completed the full 90 minutes, helping United’s youngsters get back to winning ways after recent defeats to Hull City (0-2) and Brentford (1-2) respectively.
Poised to be a first-year scholar at Bramall Lane next season, the teenager has spent the last two years at Tottenham after previously being on Bromley’s books.
The defender, on Saturday, posted an image on Instagram of his United kit being laid out ahead of the Under-18s’ victory at Swansea, writing: “18s debut”.
United, who will be targeting a third successive Championship victory when they face Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night, are always on the hunt for young and emerging talent to keep their academy topped up with promising prospects.
As well as bringing through their own talent from a very young age, United have also been known for adding players to their academy system before forcing their way into first-team environments elsewhere.
Recent examples of that include the signings of Sydie Peck, Zach Giggs, Evan Easton, Chris Eadie and Harry McGlinchey, who arrived in S2 from Arsenal, Manchester United, Celtic, Rangers and Chelsea respectively.
Other previous examples include David Brooks, who swapped Manchester City’s academy for United’s in 2014, and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who arrived from Bolton Wanderers in 2013. Both players, of course, went on to be sold for hefty-sized transfer fees.
United’s U18s have two games left before the end of this season, facing Hull (A) this Saturday and Cardiff City (H) on May 2, meaning Suleiman could be handed further opportunities before the campaign reaches its conclusion.
