Newcastle United have agreed the £100million sale of Sandro Tonali to Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs will pay £92.5million up front and a further £7.5million in achievable add-ons, marking the second most expensive sale in the Magpies’ history after Alexander Isak’s £130million British record move to Liverpool last year.

Tonali spent three seasons at St James’ Park, although it was more like two after he was hit with a 10-month betting ban just months after joining from AC Milan for £55million.

The Italian resumed his career at the beginning of the 2024-25 season and played an integral part as the club ended its 56-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup, as well as qualifying for the Champions League.

But following last season’s disappointing 12th finish in the Premier League, Tonali has opted to leave St James’ Park and join Spurs, who finished lower than the Magpies in 17th.

We asked our NewcastleWorld readers over on Facebook how they felt about Tonali’s move to North London, and the response was mixed.

Some suggested they felt betrayed by Tonali having stood by him during his betting ban:

Paula Woodhouse: Gutted. Thought after the club stood by him, when we lost him for ten months. The least he could have done was stay until January see how things were.

Phil Reed: Says it all about the player and his agent. If any player should have shown loyalty, it was him. I don’t wish him luck, anything but that.

Robbie Rimington: Snake with a short memory , but we got a lot more than he’s worth.

Gregg Tucker: He's a great player when he's playing great... Fizzles out later towards the end of the season from what I've seen.. Feel he hasn't repaid the faith and loyalty shown throughout his ban by the Newcastle faithful. True colours shown..£100 million for a player who isn't committed is good business.

Colin Snowdon: I think he owed us one more season the way we stuck by him when he got banned.

Ann Logan: Good deal for the club especially as he’s made it clear he wants to be away. Thought he might have shown a bit more loyalty to the club after the way we stuck by him in his dark days but hey ho. But Tottenham

Alan Douglas: Disgusted in him after all NUFC has done for him personally and also keeping him when he was serving his ban

Meanwhile, others recognised that it was good business - if the money is invested properly into improving Eddie Howe’s team:

Gary Flatman: On his day, he is fantastic, but he is inconsistent. £100m is a hell of a lot of money as long as we invest it well in the first team squad with quality.

Keith Dobson: Good business considering performances last season, depends on the players we bring in. I personally think we will get more out of the players we bought last season.”

Bill Baker: Great business take the money move on get two players for £100 million better than him.

Alex Wilkinson: Initially disappointed but now accepting of it especially when we’re gaining £100m. But he has to be adequately replaced!
