Sowunmi hits late winner as Under-21s overcome Boro and Storm Boelo

Up against not just Middlesbrough but also the effects of Storm Boelo, which was creating gales of up to 60mph across the north east of England, we felt the brunt of it in the first half and were made to pay the price early on when a swirling free kick from the right was headed in by James Wilson to give the home side the lead.

We responded well but it wasn't until the second half where we really made in roads, finally levelling just past the hour mark when Tyrese Hall converted from the penalty spot after Reiss Elliott-Parris had been upended in the area.

Back on terms, we pressed home with the momentum and, with the direction of the storm also our favour, found our winner in the final moments of the game - Sowunmi whipping home in style from the edge of the area to make it two goals in as many games for the forward.

It was a day for the elements in the north east with the effects of storm Boelo having a clear impact on the ball.

That was more than notable in the opener as a free kick swung in from the right by Boro swerved in the air as it came into the box on 16 minutes. Goalkeeper Samual Archer came to challenge, but defender Wilson got there first, nodding into an empty net.

We did respond well though, even against the headwind. Rio Kyerematen flashed an effort just wide of the upright three minutes later before James Rowswell headed just over the bar from a corner.

Yet it wasn’t until the second period where our endeavours actually started to bear fruit. The first sign of that came on 58 minutes when Rio Kyerematen curled from range, but goalkeeper Shea Connor was equal to it, palming it spectacularly over the bar.

Just over two minutes later though, the shot stopper could do little to stop Tyrese Hall from getting us back on terms. Elliott-Parris had done superbly to dribble the ball from his own half and into the Boro box before being felled. After the referee pointed to the spot, Hall did the rest, lashing the ball into the corner of the net.

We grew in confidence from there. Harry Byrne came narrowly wide just under 10 minutes later as he drove towards foal from range before Sowunmi saw an effort blocked and Rowswell saw another header go narrowly wide.

Middlesbrough in truth did have a late chance to win the game, Jaydon Carbon flashing just wide but it would have been entirely against the run of play.

Instead, it was us who found that winner and, just like last weekend against Leicester, it was Sowumni who followed up a Tyrese Hall strike, bagging just his second ever goal for our Under-21s since his move January from West Ham, and doing so in style with a stunning curling effort.

The win extends our lead at the top of the Premier League 2 as we continue our unbeaten start to the season and make it four wins on the spin.
