Tottenham reportedly made a move to sign Amine Gouiri during the summer transfer window, a player that Roberto De Zerbi knows well.
Signing a new forward could be one of Tottenham's priorities in 2027, and it was on their agenda in the previous summer window.
The north London club did bring Omar Marmoush to Spurs from Manchester City, but there's even an argument that he isn't an out-and-out striker.
Tottenham spent significantly in the summer transfer window to strengthen in multiple areas of the pitch, bringing in big numbers in defence, midfield, and attack.
Where Tottenham will strengthen in 2027 remains to be seen, as they spent so much in the previous window.
After a difficult start to the 2026-2027 campaign, there's no doubt Tottenham need further reinforcements if they want to start competing in the top four once again.
According to reports, Tottenham manager De Zerbi wanted to reunite with one of his former players from Marseille.
It's claimed that Spurs made an approach to sign Gouiri during the summer transfer window, opening talks over a possible move.
A move failed to materialise due to the fact that Tottenham were unable to offload either Richarlison or Solanke.
There's every chance at least one of them goes in January, with Richarlison not even registered to play in the Premier League.
Solanke is likely to stay, as he's clearly a leader within the club after De Zerbi named him captain against Manchester United.
Marmoush is, of course, the other option in the centre-forward position, but we've seen him play in various roles during his time at the club.
The Man City man has played out wide for Tottenham so far this season, while he has also been known to play in the number 10 role.
As we edge closer to the January transfer window, it'll be interesting to see what priority position Tottenham focus on.
Tottenham need a new striker
Tottenham need to be looking to bring in a new striker in the upcoming January transfer window, or, if not, next summer.
Signing a player of Gouiri's ability would be a smart move for Tottenham, especially as he knows the demands of De Zerbi.
If the opportunity arises in the January transfer window after Spurs have sold Richarlison, then Tottenham should be looking to go in for Gouiri once again.
Adding another option to their forward line should be one of their priorities, and Gouiri could be the ideal answer, likely at a reasonable price.
Speaking on Gouiri previously, De Zerbi said:
“He is not entirely aware of his strengths, the qualities he has. I try to give him this self-belief,” De Zerbi said Friday ahead of Marseille's Ligue 1 game at Auxerre on Saturday. "He reminds me of the great No. 9s, like Gonzalo Higuain, in terms of his movement, of making the team play. Amine has everything to be one of the best European center forwards, he just has to believe in it.”
