Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland have agreed a loan with an option to buy for Kevin Danso, according to BBC Sport.
Spurs have had a very busy summer transfer window and have agreed a double deal with Chelsea for defender Tosin Adarabioyo and Mykhailo Mudryk on deadline day, and the expectation was that the club would see several stars departing the club too.
Roberto De Zerbi confirmed following the side's 2-0 defeat to Newcastle this past weekend that Richarlison, Danso, and Pape Matar Sarr have all asked to leave before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night, and it now seems that the Austrian will get his wish.
According to BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel, Spurs and Sunderland have now agreed terms on a loan deal with an option to buy for the central defender.
Sunderland had a loan bid rejected last week for the 27-year-old as they look to bolster their back line. But talks reopned after Danso pushed for a move away from north London, and he will now move to the Stadium of Light.
Spurs' move for Tosin being agreed is understood to have unlocked the opportunity for Danso to move on, with De Zerbi having already signed Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke to strengthen his centre-back options, while Micky Van de Ven has signed a new long-term contract, and Cristian Romero has departed for Atletico Madrid.
Sunderland have had a relatively quiet summer window after securing Europa League football in their first season back in the top-flight last time out, with just three new arrivals so far.
Dayann Methalie, Jules Ahoka, and Thomas Meunier have all arrived, but Danso would provide Premier League experience and quality in central defence, with the club having seen Lutsharel Geertruida return to RB Leipzig following his loan spell last year.
De Zerbi Making Tough Decisions
Spurs have seen some major changes within their squad this summer, and De Zerbi has had to make some big decisions on a number of players.
Defence has been a key area that has been strengthened, but there have also been some major departures with Luka Vuskovic and Djed Spence joining Romero out of the exit. Now Danso, who had fallen to fifth-choice centre back behind the previously mentioned Van Hecke, Senesi, Van de Ven, and even veteran left-back Ben Davies.
A move away makes a lot of sense for the Austria international, and Sunderland are picking up a top defender who will improve them. With no Europe this season, Spurs have a limited schedule, and this is a deal that seems to tick the boxes for everyone involved.
