Tottenham Hotspur are also looking at a prolific Serie A star, who found the back of the net 20 times last season, in case their Xavi Simons pursuit hits a snag.

Over the past 24 hours, a number of outlets have reported that Tottenham are trying to hijack Chelsea’s move for Xavi Simons.

According to various sources, Chelsea are concentrating on landing Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez, thus opening the door for Tottenham to poach Simons.

In fact, Bild have even claimed that Simons is currently in London, discussing a move to Spurs, with the publication adding that ‘everything points’ to the RB Leipzig star ending up at N17.

Tottenham eyeing Ademola Lookman and Xavi Simons

However, Ben Jocobs has now revealed that Leipzig want a bidding war between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea for the Dutchman, who is still waiting on a move to Chelsea.

As a result, Spurs have also identified Atlanta star Ademola Lookman as a potential target.

Lookman, who scored 20 goals and provided seven assists for Atalanta across all competitions last term, was wanted by Inter Milan earlier this summer.

However, Jacobs reveals that the Nigerian international’s move to the Nerazzuri is dead, and adds that Spurs can land the versatile forward for around €50m (£43m).

Why Lookman is not a great alternative for Simons

Lookman is an extremely talented forward, and Thomas Frank’s system might get the best of the 27-year-old.

However, he is more of a second striker than an attacking midfielder in the mould of Morgan Gibbs-White and Xavi Simons.

It thus appears unlikely that Tottenham have identified him as a backup to the Leipzig man. However, that might speak to the paucity of options at this stage of the transfer window.
