Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy isn’t going to let Cristian Romero leave without a fight.
Son Heung-min and Romero have been linked with Tottenham exits this summer, and both players leaving would certainly be a big blow for Thomas Frank.
Romero could swap the North London grey hue for sunny skies in Spain as he eyes up a move to Atletico Madrid, while Son has been linked with clubs in Saudi Arabia, as well as a potential reunion with José Mourinho at Fenerbahçe.
Romero to become full-time captain if Son leaves
As reported by The Telegraph (26 June), Levy has set a £60million price tag on Romero.
However, if Son is to leave Tottenham, Romero could replace him as captain. As a result, this increases the importance of keeping the World Cup winner in North London.
MORE SPURS STORIES
Therefore, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Spurs will demand an even greater sum than what has been reported.
“I think we need to be realistic here,” Wenham said.
“With the potential of Son leaving this summer, keeping Romero is absolutely crucial, also in terms of making him the full-time captain.
“Therefore, if we’re going to sell him, the money on offer needs to be a fair reflection of his value to Tottenham. We bought him for £42.5m. Levy will want double that, not the £60m we’re hearing reports about.”
Tottenham need a Romero replacement
It would be sensible for Tottenham to permit Romero to leave if that is what he most desires. The opposite would hinder Spurs in the long run, as it is always a risk to field players who are no longer committed to the cause.
However, if he were to leave, the Lilywhites would need to find a suitable replacement first. The last thing Frank will want is to lose an important player and fail to fill the void.
This means Spurs will need to become more active in the transfer market if they want to seal a deal before the window closes.
