Tottenham are already enjoying a strong transfer window as club chiefs look up to their promises following two forgettable Premier League campaigns. Roberto De Zerbi is being backed in a big way after keeping Spurs in the Premier League, and we have already seen three new signings.
Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi were snapped up on free deals, and Jan Paul van Hecke has been signed from Brighton on a big statement deal. Tottenham are far from done though, and it seems their next target could be a high-profile midfielder.
Spurs pushing for Tonali
Tottenham are said to be pushing hard to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who looks likely to be on the move this summer. Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge told Last Word on Spurs: "A solid start (to the transfer window), and I can tell you, they (Spurs) are doing everything to get Sandro Tonali"
A number of clubs, including Arsenal, have been heavily linked with a move for Tonali, and the midfielder is set to be a very pricey signing, with GIVEMESPORT sources revealing he is valued at £100m. Spurs are already said to have had a £75million bid rejected.
Newcastle bought Tonali for £55million from AC Milan, and his value has appreciated since then, given the 'world-class' Italian has proven himself as a very sturdy midfielder at Premier League and European level.
Tonali is a 'beast'
Speaking back in October, Alan Shearer described Tonali as a 'beast' due to his dominant style of play. He said: "With the problems that he had when he first arrived, obviously well documented, and for him to have to sit and train basically on his own for months, he’s turned into a beast of a midfielder.
"He’s horrible to play against. And even his performances for Italy, if you’ve been watching them, when he goes away on international duty. Newcastle have got a top midfielder on their hands there. There’s no doubt about it. He’s brilliant."
Tonali won't be playing in Europe with Newcastle next season in any case following a disappointing season for the Magpies, so a move for Tottenham wouldn't mean sacrificing European football, but that's not to say he would not prefer a club who can offer that, which is a danger for Spurs, and likely why they are acting quickly.
All eyes will now be on Spurs to see if they raise their bid, and indeed by how much if they do.
