Tottenham Hotspur supporters have reached a consensus on Mathys Tel – and it is not the ringing endorsement the club might have hoped for.

It has been nearly six months since Tottenham Hotspur completed the loan signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, a deal which included a £46 million option to buy this summer.

The versatile forward has featured 20 times for Tottenham in the second half of the campaign, contributing three goals and one assist during that spell.

He operated across the frontline, appearing off the left, on the right, and through the middle – a quality that heavily influenced the Lilywhites’ decision to bring him in on loan from the German champions.

Tottenham fans unconvinced by Mathys Tel price tag

Mathys Tel has been viewed by some as a long-term Tottenham successor to Heung-min Son, yet his performances, while tidy in parts, have not exactly set the Premier League alight.

With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Tottenham must now decide whether to activate the option to buy clause and make his move permanent, or send the Frenchman back to his parent club.

Supporters have now made their voices heard, with many unconvinced that Mathys Tel is worth the £46 million investment. One fan remarked: “Yes, but not for £60M, something similar to what we paid Odobert.”

Another stated: “Unless we can get him for half price, like £25 mil, nah imo.” A different supporter added: “No, wish him the best in his development but he is not what we need.”

Some believe the deal would hinder youth progression: “Surplus to requirements I think, blocking the pathway of our own youth to break through. Whatever happened to the perceived ‘Generational Talent’ of Moore, Gray, Lankshear, Donley, Scarlett, Devine, T. Hall, etc. Signing Tel, we will not see some of them again…(IMO).”

The recurring sentiment of Mathys Tel’s price tag being too high for Tottenham continued: “Honestly, do not see the hype given the price tag. He scored from a pen but other than that never seemed to have the right boots on. Let us get him for half of the €50m option.”

Another added: “Cheap one year loan deal maybe, needs to do a lot more to warrant a permanent move.”

Spurs yet to decide on the future of Tel

Tel is part of the group of Spurs players expected to depart the club on 30 June when contracts expire.

The Bayern loanee has spoken fondly about his short time in North London, stating that Tottenham means more than just a football club to him.

Discussions are expected to take place in the coming weeks about Mathys Tel’s future, with reports suggesting Tottenham have already informed the Frenchman’s entourage of their desire to retain him.
