For the second time in a week, the French media have been very critical of Wilson Odobert, declaring that the Tottenham winger did not offer enough of an attacking threat as France’s U21s were knocked out of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

It seemed as though France’s name was destined for the trophy last Sunday, given the dramatic manner in which they came from behind against Denmark in the quarterfinal, turning the game around in a matter of two minutes.

Mathys Tel was the hero for France, getting the match-winner with a superb strike, and the Tottenham man came in for praise from the media for his performance.

However, his Spurs teammate, Wilson Odobert was criticised for his showing in the quarterfinal, with his performance labelled as disappointing.

Tottenham’s Wilson Odobert delivers shocker in the semifinals

The former Burnley man kept his place in the side for the semifinal, but the French proved no match for the Germans, who brushed their opponents aside 3-0 to set up a tasty final against England.

It turns out that Odobert failed to produce too much of note in the semifinals either, with one outlet claiming that the 20-year-old ‘completely disappeared’ after the first 20 minutes.

Maxifoot gave Odobert a rating of just 4/10 and wrote about his performance against Germany: “The Tottenham striker failed to beat [Noah] Atubolu with a shot that was too soft, then with a pivot shot after a nice move to turn around in the middle of several defenders.

“Despite these two chances, he was too discreet in this semi-final and completely disappeared after 20 minutes.”

Should Tottenham consider cutting their losses on Wilson Odobert?

Odobert’s first season at Tottenham Hotspur was interrupted by injuries, but he did show enough glimpses of quality for the club to justify persisting with him.

However, it remains to be seen what new boss Thomas Frank thinks of the winger, with the Dane looking to rebuild the squad he inherited from Ange Postecoglou to fit his style of play.
