Tottenham Hotspur fans have been quick to share their thoughts after a well-known club insider revealed that the North London side are showing interest in a versatile defender capable of bolstering their back line.

Fresh reports have emerged indicating that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie as their preferred option for the left-sided centre-back role.

It is believed that if Spurs are to secure the services of the Ecuador international this summer, they would need to part with a substantial fee for a player who can also operate effectively as a left back when required.

While Tottenham are not short of options in central defence, last season’s injury troubles have heightened the need for a reliable left-sided centre-back who can deputise for the injury-prone Micky van de Ven.

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been vocal in their response to the latest reports linking the club with a move for a defender of Hincapie’s calibre.

Many fans are excited by the prospect, while others have questioned the financial side of things, especially as Spurs is also said to be in pursuit of Savinho and Eberechi Eze.

One fan remarked: “Wtf ??? Have we got an unlimited money glitch?”. Another admitted they love the idea but questioned its feasibility: “Love the idea and he’s a very good player, BUT did not Leverkusen say that after Xhaka, no more outgoings would be happening?”

Another supporter remained cautious, asking: “When are any of these deals coming in Paul? Savinho, Eze, now Hincapie. At the moment, it is all fugazi until they are there holding the shirt”.

One fan urged the club to prioritise the other targets first: “Wonderful player. But get Savinho and Eze done first, please.”

Others were more straightforward, with one saying: “Omds yes please” and another asking: “On top of Eze and Savinho??” to which O’Keefe replied: “Yes”.

Spurs face competition for Piero Hincapie’s signature

Tottenham are not alone in their interest in Piero Hincapie, with reports suggesting that Atletico Madrid have also been monitoring the centre-back. However, talks appear to have broken down, with the Spanish club unwilling to meet his £52.5m release clause.

Liverpool and Chelsea are also said to have made enquiries about the Ecuadorian, but Leverkusen have reportedly made it clear they are not willing to entertain offers for him.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag has also stated his desire to keep Hincapie at the club, especially in light of Jonathan Tah’s departure earlier in the window.
