Archie Gray joined Tottenham from Leeds United last year for a hefty fee, but the teenager found himself thrust into a difficult situation.
Gray was one of the Championship’s most promising talents before his move to Spurs, and he has since played in a variety of positions.
Although naturally a midfielder, Gray found himself regularly at centre-back last season as Tottenham suffered an almighty injury crisis, and he had to survive as Spurs finished 17th.
The teenager is part of the England squad, which has just reached the final of the Under-21 European Championships, but Spurs fans are now concerned about the midfielder.
Spurs fans worried by Gray developments with England
Gray started alongside a host of Premier League talents in England’s first two games of the tournament, but was kept at right-back rather than his natural midfield position.
MORE SPURS STORIES
This followed a season in which he primarily featured across the defence for Spurs, and hardly got a chance further up the pitch.
Gray has been dropped in the knockout stages, playing just one minute against the Netherlands in the semi-final, and fans have now questioned the money spent on him, given his current England role.
Gray needs to return to midfield for Spurs
Some may blame Ange Postecoglou for throwing Gray under the bus by playing him out of position in a faltering team at his age, and time will now tell whether they are right.
Thomas Frank needs to address the holes in his squad, which led to Gray being forced to play as a centre-back, and this should then allow the Englishman to return to midfield.
If given more confidence and game time in midfield next season, Spurs may start to see the £40 million spent on him being repaid, but fans are already becoming sceptical given the nature of his campaign at the Euros.
Gray made 46 appearances in all competitions last season, and this may have been too much for a teenager in his first Premier League campaign after a move.
