Tottenham were expected to step up their pursuit of a Premier League star this week, but Chelsea have scuppered their chances of landing him.
Tottenham Hotspur will need reinforcements ahead of next season, as they are set to feature in at least four different competitions.
Ange Postecoglou stated season three is always better than season two, and if he is to make his third season any better than his last, he needs to improve Spurs’ performance in the Premier League.
Indeed, Tottenham will want to give a good account of themselves in every competition they feature in next season and to that, Postecoglou admitted Spurs would need to sign players with experience playing in the Champions League and Premier League.
Tottenham wanted Liam Delap transfer but Chelsea have won
The centre-forward position is one Tottenham are looking to improve, and it is no surprise, as it has been reported that Richarlison is considering his future at Spurs.
Mathys Tel, who has featured as a striker at times last season, could also be heading back to Germany on June 30 when his Spurs contract expires.
Interestingly, according to Dean Jones, on the Ranks FC Ultras Patreon page, Spurs were planning on stepping up talks to sign a very exciting striker. According to the journalist, Tottenham had already made initial contact about signing Liam Delap and were looking to accelerate talks in the coming days.

Jones wrote: “United’s other major target is Liam Delap, but that is still in the air. He is carefully weighing his next move, with Everton, Chelsea, and now Tottenham all very much in the mix. Spurs have made initial contact and hope to accelerate talks this week.”
The Ipswich Town forward, who was relegated with the Tractor Boys after scoring 12 times in the Premier League, but it is another London club who have won the race. Fabrizio Romano reported previously that Delap had made it clear he wants to join Chelsea.
Romano has since given Delap’s move to Chelsea the “Here we go” treatment on social media.
Spurs need to find another option instead of Delap
For sure, Delap would have been an exciting signing for Tottenham if they had managed to get a deal for the striker done. The young forward has proven himself in the Premier League after hitting the double-figure mark for goals in only his first full season, scoring three more goals than Tottenham’s forward Dominic Solanke, who ended with nine.
Spurs will rotate heavily next campaign because of their involvement in the Champions League – that is why having a player like Delap, who would not need any more time to adapt to life in England, could be vital for Tottenham, who will need to hit the ground running early on next campaign.
However, if Tottenham are set to lose out to Chelsea, they will have to turn their attention to other forward options in the summer transfer market. Of course, there is the small matter of sorting Ange Postecoglou’s future first too.
