Tottenham Hotspur are considering replacing Guglielmo Vicario with a wantaway goalkeeper who used to be considered one of the best in Europe.

Tottenham Hotspur purchased a goalkeeper in the last January transfer window, and the same could happen next month, with concerns growing over Guglielmo Vicario.

The 29-year-old is a member of Thomas Frank’s leadership team and has been first choice at the club since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou in 2023.

However, Inter Milan want to sign Vicario, and Spurs might not wish to stand in their way, considering the Italian shot-stopper’s recent performances.

Tottenham have shown interest in Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Team Talk report that Frank is prioritising an upgrade in the goalkeeping department amid Vicario’s poor form. Tottenham are reportedly monitoring Marc-Andre ter Stegen as a high-profile option, with the 33-year-old having only made one start for Barcelona this season.

Although no significant negotiations have taken place, the La Liga giants are open to offers for ter Stegen, particularly if it helps to take the strain off their wage bill. This could take place in the form of a loan-to-buy deal, which would allow the goalkeeper to get minutes ahead of the World Cup, while giving Spurs the chance to assess a permanent move.

Tottenham also remain interested in James Trafford, who is viewed as a long-term solution with a high upside. Manchester City could be willing to let the 23-year-old leave on a loan-to-buy deal, but Pep Guardiola wishes to keep him until at least the end of the season.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Trafford himself is keen on a move away from the Etihad Stadium, as he wants to be starting matches on a weekly basis.

Ter Stegen is not the type of goalkeeper Spurs usually sign

Tottenham tend to go for goalkeepers who are still developing and have not yet reached their prime, with the hope that they will spend many years at the club.

This was the case with Hugo Lloris, who made North London his home for more than 11 years and Trafford certainly fits this profile. Ter Stegen, on the other hand, is towards the back end of his career.

The last time Spurs bought a former world-class keeper who was past his best was when they brought Joe Hart to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2020. The ex-England international was only used in cup matches and was shipped off to Celtic after just one season.

However, ter Stegen was still starting matches for Barcelona last season, so hopefully he still has the ability to play as a first-choice option in one of the world’s greatest leagues.
