Tottenham Hotspur would have to pay a compensation fee, “one of the biggest in football history,” to acquire Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, according to BBC Sport.

Despite leading Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League, Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham just weeks after his accomplishment. While the Lilywhites were a strong team in Europe, they struggled massively in the Premier League, losing an eye-watering 22 games out of 38.

For all of their fortunes on the continent, Spurs’ league form was almost impossible to ignore and the club are now on the hunt for another manager. Brentford manager Thomas Frank appears to be the favourite, but there are plenty of other candidates on the shortlist, including Fulham manager Marco Silva.

It appears unlikely that one such shortlisted name, however, will be making the move to North London.

Pochettino Return Looks Unlikely

Argentine is in charge of the US men’s team

As per BBC Sport, Mauricio Pochettino is a name that Spurs have considered to replace Postecoglou. The Argentine has been in charge of the United States men’s team since 2024 and is expected to remain in charge of the country for 2026 World Cup, but is well known to Spurs fans, having managed the club from 2014 to 2019.

Though Pochettino, who is reported chairman Daniel Levy's first choice, failed to win any silverware with Spurs, his tenure as a whole was a major success. The Argentinian guided Spurs to more than one second-placed finish in the Premier League whilst in 2019, he guided the Lilywhites to their first and so far, only, Champions League final.

A Pochettino return would be well-received by the fans, however it appears unlikely at this stage. The BBC have reported that the move would come “with a number of obstacles” including the compensation package that Spurs would have to pay for him, which would reportedly be “one of the biggest in football history.” For all the positivity it would bring, it appears that a return for Pochettino is not set to happen.
