Tottenham Hotspur finally see a path to getting their money back for Alejo Veliz. However, the player himself is stopping the move. Recent reports from Argentine transfer expert Alejo Gerbaudo confirm a breakthrough. Spurs have agreed on a transfer fee of roughly €10 million with Brazilian side Bahia.

Tottenham loanee Alejo Veliz Rejects Bahia Switch for Libertadores Dream

The clubs have reached this agreement quickly. The Tottenham board want to sell the 22-year-old striker before the January window closes. However, the move has hit a major roadblock because of the player’s personal ambitions. Veliz is currently playing on loan at Rosario Central. The Argentine striker holds no interest in moving to Brazil right now.

His decision is about football, not money. Rosario Central qualified for the 2026 Copa Libertadores. Veliz wants to lead the charge for them in South America’s biggest tournament. The striker feels that playing for his boyhood club is the best way to get his career back on track.

Consequently, he told the clubs he won’t cut his loan short in Argentina. This puts the deal between Tottenham and Bahia at risk. Even though the powerful City Football Group owns Bahia and wants a permanent deal, Veliz is staying loyal to Rosario Central.

The Right Move at the Wrong Time?

This standoff is a headache for Tottenham. They clearly don’t see a future for Veliz at the club. The Argentine forward moved to North London for about £13 million in 2023. Since then, he has found it very hard to handle the intensity of European football.

Veliz only scored one goal for Spurs, coming off the bench against Brighton back in December 2023. His loan moves haven’t gone well either. He didn’t score at all during a stint at Sevilla. The Argentine also managed only four goals in 29 games while on loan at Espanyol last year.

These poor numbers have convinced the Spurs board that selling him is the best move for everyone. Getting €10 million back for a player who didn’t work out in the Premier League is a decent result. For Veliz, though, things look different. After a tough time in Spain and England, he has finally found his feet again at Rosario Central.

The 22-year-old has already scored five goals in 16 games this season. Joining Bahia might offer more money, but staying where he is comfortable helps him find his confidence again. Spurs will probably try to push him to take the deal. Still, the player’s dream of playing in the Copa Libertadores could ruin the transfer. It will possibly leave Tottenham stuck with his wages until the summer.
