Tottenham have scouted a highly-rated Brazilian defender in recent weeks.
Roberto De Zerbi looks intent on overhauling a squad that narrowly escaped relegation on the final day of last season. The Tottenham Hotspur board promised to make significant investment in the squad, and they have started delivering on it, although the two signings done so far are free transfer deals.
Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have arrived at N17 to fortify a Spurs defence that leaked 57 goals in the Premier League during the 2025/26 season. Tottenham also want to add another centre-back in the form of Brighton and Hove Albion star Jan Paul van Hecke. Talks between both clubs continue, as Roberto De Zerbi looks to reunite with Van Hecke in North London.
On Thursday, the Lilywhites also revealed that Ben Davies had extended his stay for a further year. Regardless of that, another central defender has been linked with a move to Spurs.
Tottenham eye move for Gremio defender Viery
According to Brazilian outlet Zero Hora, Tottenham are among some Premier League clubs to have enquired about Gremio defender Viery in recent weeks. Newcastle United and Sunderland have also shown an interest in the defensive talent. In fact, the Premier League trio are understood to have sent representatives to Brazil to watch the 21-year-old closely.
Viery has become one of the breakout defenders in Brazilian football this season. After a slow start to the campaign, the youngster has become an undisputed starter for Gremio under Luis Castro. He has made 27 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with two goals and an assist.
The Brazilian’s ball-playing ability, aggression, pace and versatility is particularly appealing to European clubs. The report adds that Gremio are looking for a package of over €15m to sell their highly-rated defender, with a sell-on clause also being eyed.
Should Spurs make a move?
Following Senesi’s addition and the arrival of Luka Vuskovic on a season-long loan from SV Hamburger, De Zerbi now has plenty of left-footed centre-back options in his roster. Micky van de Ven has already been a regular starter as left-sided centre-back, with Senesi expected to provide back-up to the Dutchman next season. The veteran Davies, too, is left-footed.
So, it does not make much sense to add another defender with a similar profile. Viery is of that profile, although with Gremio demanding a package of over €15m to sell him this summer, Spurs can take a punt on him with a futuristic view. By signing him, the club bosses can send the South American out on loan to a big European club to gain extensive experience.
It remains to be seen whether the North Londoners test Gremio’s resolve for Viery after scouting him this year.
