Tottenham have got their 2026/27 Premier League season off to a disappointing start to say the least, with just one point from their opening three matches and zero goals scored. A 3-0 loss to Brentford was followed by a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United, and last weekend Roberto De Zerbi’s side were held to a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.
As things stand, Spurs lie 17th in the Premier League table, and murmurs of discontent are already starting as the side look to improve on last season - a shambolic campaign that almost saw the club relegated. Tottenham spent over £330m on new players in a highly impressive summer window, and will be expecting improved performances and results once the radically overhauled squad has had sufficient time to gel.
Next up, Spurs play host to Everton on Saturday evening, in what should be an ideal opportunity to get three precious points on the board. Ahead of the game, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert, remain long-term injury concerns, while Dejan Kulusevski is slowly closing in on an eagerly-awaited return.
James Maddison is in contention to play after shaking off a shoulder injury, but it’s bad news for summer loan signing Mykhailo Mudryk, who is set to miss at least two months of action after suffering an ankle injury in training. Ahead of Tottenham’s clash against with Toffees, we’ve given our verdict on the most likely starting line-up De Zerbi will field.
Spurs predicted XI vs Everton: Goalkeeper and defence
GK - Antoine Kinsky: De Zerbi was bullish in his assertion that Kinsky was more than up to the task of being his number one this season, amid concerns that Spurs’ lavish spending didn’t extend to a Guglielmo Vicario replacement. He’s looked a little shaky so far this season, but will have been relieved to have kept a clean sheet against Forest.
RB - Pedro Porro: The World Cup winner is back to his preferred full-back position after filling in with a more advanced role against Newcastle United. He’ll be one of the first names on team sheet for Spurs this season, as he heads into his fourth season at the club. Porro has racked up 155 appearances since joining from Sporting CP, initially on loan, back in 2023.
CB - Jan Paul van Hecke: Spurs were determined to tighten up their defence after it shipped 57 goals over the course of the 2025/26 season. £52m signing Van Hecke came in from Brighton & Hove Albion to bolster the backline, after four highly impressive seasons on the south coast. He’ll start against Everton.
CB - Micky van de Ven: Injury problems now behind him, Van de Ven has an opportunity to forge a solid central defensive partnership with his international teammate, following Cristian Romero’s exit. The new skipper was eyed by a number of clubs over the summer, but ultimately opted to remain at the club and spearhead the De Zerbi project.
LB - Destiny Udogie: A decline in Andy Robertson’s defensive ability was highlighted during his sporadic appearances for Liverpool last season, and the same issues reared their head in Spurs’ opening two Premier League fixtures. Udogie came in and was part of a defence who kept a clean sheet against Forest, so he may well get the nod to face Everton.
Spurs predicted XI vs Everton: Midfield and attack
CM - Sandro Tonali: It was a summer of midfield rebuilds across the board in the Premier League, as Spurs sealed the statement signing of Tonali for a whopping £100m. He was one of Tottenham’s better players in their draw with Forest, and will be looking to kick on and justify that hefty price tag with some match-winning performances.
CM - Rodrigo Bentancur: Slotting in alongside Tonali, the 29-year-old experienced midfielder has a point to prove this season after missing almost 100 days of last season with a hamstring injury. He played every minute of Uruguay’s 2026 World Cup campaign, which saw them bow out in the group stages after failing to beat Spain, Cape Verde or Saudi Arabia.
AMR - Savio: De Zerbi may well be tempted to hand £55m gem Mohamed Kudus a start against Everton, but will likely take the cautious approach as he eases the Ghana international back into action following last season’s serious injury. Savio, who scored just 11 minutes into his Spurs debut, is set to keep his place on the right flank for now.
AMC - Mateus Fernandes: Conor Gallagher started in the advanced central midfield position against Forest, but Fernandes could be recalled to the starting line-up against Everton due to his superior attacking and creative threat, in a game where Spurs should be firmly on the front foot.
AML - Mathys Tel: With no Mudryk to call upon, Tel will keep his place on the left wing. Like the majority of Tottenham’s attacking talent, he’s struggled for composure when it comes to delivering an end product so far this season, and will be desperate to contribute a goal or an assist to get up and running against David Moyes’ side on Saturday.
ST - Omar Marmoush: Spurs are looking a little light up top, but if the Egypt international can get his shooting boots on, they should be fine this season. De Zerbi looks to favour the Manchester City loanee - who will join Tottenham on a £60m permanent deal next summer - over previous first-choice striker Dominic Solanke for now.
