Tottenham could be set to bring back a former player in what would be one of the most surprising moves of the summer. Spurs have been the biggest spenders in the Premier League this summer, and they are not showing any signs of slowing down.
Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes are among those to be brought in, with more than £230million spent, and there is more to come. Roberto De Zerbi is expected to take a bottom half side to one that is capable of securing European qualification, but he is being backed in an unprecedented way as far as Tottenham bosses are concerned.
Tottenham could move for Muani
Spurs are now being linked with a move for former loan star Randal Kolo Muani, who had a forgettable loan spell with the club last season. Muani had previously impressed on loan with Juventus, but he struggled at PSG following a £77m move, and also failed to adapt to the Premier League.
Muani was part of a Spurs squad that struggled as a whole, but a return of one goal and one assist in 30 Premier League games simply is not good enough.
Tottenham could likely have kept Muani if they wanted, but there was movement, and a return to Juventus was expected for the Frenchman. That hasn't panned out yet, and while there are said to be talks between PSG and Juventus, L'Equipe say Tottenham are now interested in re-signing the forward.
That will be a big surprise to anyone connected to Spurs, given how poorly he performed last season.
What has been said about Muani's Tottenham spell?
Muani arrived at Spurs with real promise, given how he performed for Juventus, and indeed for France during Euro 2024. But it just didn't work out at Spurs, where his lack of goalscoring was described as a 'problem' by Gary Neville.
Meanwhile, some Spurs fans have suggested he might be one of the club's worst loan signings.
As for De Zerbi, whose opinion certainly counts the most when it comes to any possibility of the striker being re-signed, the Spurs boss said: "Kolo Muani I know is not playing a good season but he is a good player".
Muani is clearly a good player, given he has succeeded in Serie A and for the France national team, and he could perhaps come good after a full pre-season with De Zerbi. But given how he did perform last season, it would be an almighty risk for Spurs.
