New Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi took his first training session on Good Friday following his appointment this week, but there was one notable absentee as the Italian was boosted by the return of Mathys Tel.

De Zerbi decided to perform a U-turn on taking the Tottenham job now rather than waiting until the summer, with Spurs officials wanting their number one manager target to save them from relegation.

The Italian has seven matches to do exactly that, with the potential that the north Londoners start their next league game against Sunderland a week on Sunday in the Premier League's relegation zone.

Tottenham need points and wins quickly, with De Zerbi tasked with ensuring they soon pick up their first three points since they beat Crystal Palace at the end of December.

Both Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor were hit hard by injury issues during their reigns at Spurs, but the new boss will be hoping to have better luck in that regard to stop the club from dropping into the Championship.

GIVEMESPORT understands that De Zerbi has no relegation release clause in his five-year contract, with the Italian himself confirming he will be manager next season no matter what happens.

Kudus Absent From Tottenham Training

There is a feeling that De Zerbi might see Mohammed Kudus as one of his key Tottenham players during the run-in, given he tried to sign the player when he was manager of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The £55m star last played in the Premier League against Sunderland at the beginning of January, before being taken off within the first 20 minutes with a hamstring injury.

He has been on the sidelines since, but the hope was that he could make his return in the corresponding fixture with the Black Cats a week on Sunday.

Indeed, Tudor had confirmed prior to the Nottingham Forest loss that he could be back in training in 10 days, and that he was 'progressing very well'.

However, as footage emerged of De Zerbi's first training session on Friday, there was no sign of Kudus.

Of course, he could be working elsewhere, but it is a concern that he wasn't visible when many other first-team players were.

The Ghana international still has a week to step up his comeback, with De Zerbi sure to want him available for selection as soon as possible.

Mathys Tel Gives Tottenham Boost

While there were no signs of Kudus at Hotspur Way, the return to training of Tel is a boost.

The Frenchman went off against Forest with hip injury and there would have been concerns about how long he would be absent for.

However, the 20-year-old was back on the training pitch and looks set to be available for the trip to Sunderland unless he has any setbacks.
