Wayne Rooney has urged Conor Gallagher to step up and become a leader for Tottenham, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero letting the team down recently.

The North London club are in a critical position right now in the Premier League table, sitting just one point above the bottom three.

What GRADE would you give Conor Gallagher’s signing at Spurs?

West Ham United and Nottingham Forest are right on their coattails following their positive results during gameweek 29.

The former Premier League striker now believes that the Lilywhites are in real danger of going down and need a new leader to step up.

Wayne Rooney urges Conor Gallagher to become a leader at Tottenham

Wayne Rooney has told Conor Gallagher he has the opportunity now to become a leader at Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs seem devoid of players willing to take accountability for recent results, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both being sent off recently.

Speaking about the situation at Tottenham, Rooey told BBC Sport: “I like Tottenham. Tottenham was the team I always liked growing up as well.

“If I were the Tottenham manager now or even one of the leaders, I think I’d probably come out and just say, ‘Listen, we know we haven’t been good enough, but please get behind us, we need you more than ever’. The booing isn’t helping.

But with Van de Ven and Romero both shying away, that presents someone like Gallagher to step up and take control of the situation.

Gallagher was the captain at Chelsea, so he certainly knows how to be a leader, and the North London club desperately need him.

👀 How many points will Tottenham take from their next four Premier League matches?

“If you think that that gives opportunity for someone else to go and do that, and whether that’s a Conor Gallagher, who’s only just gone in there, or whoever, that’s an opportunity for someone to stand up,” added Rooney.

“I like Tottenham, respect Tottenham, and I hope they don’t go down. But at the minute it’s slowly, slowly looking more likely they might do.”

Gallagher is Tottenham’s highest-paid player, and he needs to prove why the club paid £36 million to sign him during the January window.
