Tottenham Hotspur's Micky van de Ven was forced off with an injury for the Netherlands against Serbia on Sunday.

The Dutch beat Serbia 2-1 to go top of Group 2 in the Nations League, which concludes a successful international break for them.

Van de Ven had already played all three of his nation's previous games, but featured at left-back.

Roberto De Zerbi sees the 25-year-old as a centre-back, a position which he returned to against Serbia.

Spurs have had a horrid time with injuries in recent years, and the break hasn't been kind to them already.

With Jan Paul van Hecke already an injury doubt for Tottenham, De Zerbi now has another problem on his hands after what happened to Van de Ven.

How Dutch media reacted to Micky van de Ven's display and 'nasty' injury

Van de Ven technically had to come off before the final whistle, though he was not replaced, as Xavi Hernandez had already made his fifth and final change in the 82nd minute.

The defender boasted a 97 per cent passing accuracy in the match, misplacing just three of his 86 attempted passes

He made four accurate long balls, had 100 touches and won 100 per cent of his ground duels.

He made two tackles, three clearances and four recoveries, as his performance proved why he is so important to De Zerbi at Tottenham, which only makes his injury more worrying.

Voetbal Primeur gave him a 6/10 rating, writing: "First as a left back, then van de Ven operated from the centre of defence.

"Useful and reliable, but also a performance that will soon disappear from the collective memory. Due to a nasty wrist injury, he did not make it to the end of the match."

Sportnieuws.nl handed him a 6.5/10 rating and wrote: "Van de Ven had a difficult time in his previous three international matches as a left back, but came into his own better against Serbia.

"In possession, he often played more centrally, which immediately looked more natural. Defensively, he hardly got into trouble and recovered with his speed several times when things were not right at the back."

Finally, vi.nl explained van de Ven's injury, writing: "In the final phase of the duel between Orange and Serbia, things went wrong for van de Ven.

"The left-footed player came into a duel with Luka Jovic, who accidentally landed with his full weight on the arm of Van de Ven. How serious Van de Ven's injury is remains to be seen."

Though van de Ven only picked up a wrist injury, it was an issue that forced him off the pitch in the game for his national side.

This means he could be a doubt for Spurs' first game back against Manchester United, with van Hecke also in a race against time.

The pair have played a combined 12 games for the Lilywhites already this campaign, while the likes of Marcos Senesi and Tosin Adarabioyo have played four times combined.

De Zerbi has to decide his centre-back pairing soon for Man United, and it could be one that Tottenham fans have not seen before.
