Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make Cristian Romero their highest-earning player to convince him to stay at the club, according to TBR Football.
The Lilywhites have secured Champions League football for the 2025/26 season after winning the Europa League, despite finishing the Premier League season in 17th place.
The decision was made to sack manager Ange Postecoglou as a result, with Thomas Frank set to be appointed as his replacement, and now Daniel Levy's next priority is to try and keep his vice-captain at the club amid interest from Atletico Madrid.
Tottenham to Offer Romero a New Deal
Argentine has his heart set on Atletico Madrid
Romero, who has been described as "world-class" by Micky Van de Ven, has emerged as a top target for La Liga outfit Atletico, and talks have already been held with their manager Diego Simeone about a move.
The Argentina international has even agreed personal terms over a move, but with no transfer fee agreed between the clubs, Tottenham are still hopeful of being able to convince him to stay now that they have secured Champions League football.
The World Cup winner has his heart set on a move to La Liga, however, he is open to listening to the offer Spurs are willing to make for him.
With Frank set to come into the club, there is a belief that Postecoglou's exit could see a new era ushered in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and reports suggest that the Dane wants to bring Brentford star Nathan Collins with him.
It's possible that he could be seen as a Romero replacement, although the north London club have already made their loan move for Kevin Danso permanent following his success in the second half of last season.
Romero currently earns around £165,000-a-week, and the top-earner at the club is captain Heung-Min Son on £190,000-a-week. An offer to keep Romero would likely take him to around £200,000-a-week, but Tottenham will know that they have their wage structure and won't break it.
