Tottenham Hotspur women made a winning start to their Women’s League Cup campaign with a victory over Aston Villa.
Spurs won the game 7-6 on penalties after both sides failed to find the net with Lize Kop shining in net for Martin Ho’s side.
However, the game was overshadowed by reports of alleged racist abuse that was directed towards forward Jess Naz.
Tottenham’s League Cup victory overshadowed
The WSL replied to Tottenham Hotspur Women’s tweet about the incident.
They said: “We are appalled to hear that Jess Naz was subjected to disgusting racial abuse last night.
“This hate-fuelled behaviour is contrary to our beliefs and values as an organisation and there is no room for racism in sport or society.”
The Lionesses also released a statement in response to the racist abuse.
They said: “We stand with Jess.
“There is no room for racism, be that in football or any walk of life.”
Naz states the importance of addressing abusive behaviour
Prior to both statements being made, Naz posted on her Instagram account stating she had been subjected to racial abuse in her direct messages.
She said: “I was going to wait till after the game to speak because I’m done being quiet.
“I was subjected to racial abuse in my DM’s.
“Racism in any form is unacceptable and it is important to address this behaviour, and ensure that steps are taken to prevent it from happening again.”
The 25-year-old made the switch from rivals Arsenal to Tottenham in 2018, and has made over 100 appearances since arriving.
Naz also has six England appearances to her name.
England teammate and defender Jess Carter was also subjected to racial abuse in July during the victorious Euro 2025 campaign.
