Inter have identified Djed Spence as a candidate to fill their vacancy on the right flank, but the Nerazzurri face stiff Premier League competition for the Tottenham defender.

According to TEAMtalk, via CalcioMercato.it, Inter have made a concrete approach to Spence's agents in an effort to bring the England international to Cristian Chivu, and the 25-year-old, who does not feature in Roberto De Zerbi's plans and is under contract until 2029, is understood to have given his willingness to the move.

Standing in the way, however, is serious interest from home: Liverpool, Newcastle and Everton are all credited with an eye on the versatile full-back.

Inter search for Dumfries successor after setbacks as trail leads to Spence

Spence is the latest name on a list Inter have been forced to keep revising as the search for a successor to Denzel Dumfries, who joined Real Madrid, has already brought two frustrations.

The Nerazzurri were beaten to Marco Palestra by Chelsea, and more recently saw a deal for Anan Khalaili fall through when CONI denied the player sporting eligibility, an unexpected collapse for a move that had appeared close to completion.

Inter Milan are exploring a double swoop for Tottenham Hotspur defenders Djed Spence and Cristian Romero.

The Serie A champions first approached over Spence, before Spurs widened the discussion to include Romero, who has asked to leave. Landing both would allow Inter to reshape their flanks and defence in one window.

Spence is the primary target. Inter see the England right-back as their preferred option to replace Denzel Dumfries, who has joined Real Madrid. The 25-year-old is understood to be open to the move, having to compete with Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie in north London.

The valuations, however, are a major obstacle. Corriere dello Sport reports Spence is rated at over €30m, rising towards €40m, higher than Inter had anticipated. His stock has climbed further after a strong World Cup, in which he impressed against Argentina in the semi-final.

Romero’s price is steeper still, with Spurs wanting between €40m and €50m for the Argentina centre-back. Inter consider that prohibitive, noting it exceeds even Chelsea’s demands for Trevoh Chalobah, a deal they recently abandoned over cost.

The captain’s future has been in doubt for some time. Romero has told Spurs he wants to leave after four seasons, and knows Serie A well from previous spells at Genoa and Atalanta. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Inter held talks, with Barcelona also admirers.

Inter’s interest reflects their admiration for Premier League physicality. They value the pace and power that such players bring to Serie A, with Romero seen as an ideal partner for Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni.

Their spending is constrained, though. Having already banked Dumfries’ fee, Inter must sell to buy under the owners Oaktree and have missed out on other defensive targets this window. Alternatives, including Atletico Madrid’s Nahuel Molina, remain under consideration.

Tottenham, for their part, need sales of their own. De Zerbi’s side has spent beyond £200m this summer, and requires departures to fund further additions.

If Tottenham are again in a position where one of their leaders is looking elsewhere, supporters will wonder what project is really being sold behind the scenes.

Additionally, among all recorded performances in the 2025-2026 season, Gray came in with the 10th most distance covered (12.8km) in one match.

Across both lists, there is not a single other Spurs player, making Gray a standout in that regard.

Tottenham have added some big names to their squad already and players that will be directly competing with Gray.

Mbaye is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and can make a few dangerous runs with it out on the flanks. He has got the vision to create a few inviting chances for his teammates in the final third and can shoot the ball with venom from long range. Mbaye can even chip in by scoring and creating the odd goal for his team up top.

The Senegalese talent is primarily a right-winger but can also function as a left-sided wide player or as an attacking midfielder if asked to do so. However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical style and high intensity of Premier League football if Spurs manage to get him on board later this year.

We can expect Mbaye to add more quality and depth to Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi's frontline. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.

Ultimately, Grant didn’t make the cut, with Montemurro telling journalists that he ‘hadn’t seen enough proof from her that she was ready to go’. The Matildas finished runners-up to Japan on home soil.

While Ellie Carpenter is firmly established as her country’s first choice right-back, the battle to deputise for her is far more open. Grant was long considered the go-to. But she now faces competition from Charlize Rule, who has now solidified her spot in Brighton’s first 11.

Elsewhere, Jamilla Rankin has sealed a move to Eintracht Frankfurt following a successful two-year stint with Hoffenheim in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Add in the versatility of Newcastle’s Kaitlyn Torpey, who can play on either side of the defence, or Grant’s new club-mate Courtney Nevin who — although she’s been deployed mainly as left-back for Malmö — is equally adept in either full-back role, and the road to the Matilda’s 2027 World Cup squad isn’t a straightforward one.

For now, though, getting back to her best at club level will be a step in the right direction.

Unless Everton are prepared to pay the big bucks for Spence, they can put their efforts elsewhere, as the player is soon set to make a call on his future.

Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro have been tipped to be Roberto De Zerbi's first-choice full-back's with Spence wanting regular game time.

It had appeared that Spurs were anticipating the Englishman possibly leaving the club, with Neco Williams a target to replace him.

As reported by The Telegraph on Thursday, it looks like Williams will be staying at Nottingham Forest.

Regardless, Spence was never going to make a transfer decision while at the World Cup, but is now set to sit down and decide once he gets back to England.

Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the biggest winners of the summer 2026 transfer window thus far, landing three proven Premier League starters in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Jan Paul van Hecke to vastly upgrade a team that has finished 17th in back to back seasons.

But if Spurs are to actually go far and compete in the top five of the table again to seal a Champions League place for the 2027/28 campaign, Spurs are going to need to score goals. They were so poor in that regard that center backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were two of their biggest sources of goals, while veteran striker Richarlison was the only player withe double digit goals in the Premier League for the Lilywhites.

Richarlison's future at the club remains murky, and the only other striker Spurs have at their disposal is Dominic Solanke, who, aside from one 19 goal season in 2023/24, has been the furthest thing from a goal scoring threat throughout his career.

Tottenham have always skimped on forwards

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur do not have a single goal scoring winger. Mathys Tel could be that player in the future, but he is nowhere near that caliber of player yet. Mohammed Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, and Wilson Odobert are talented but all have more creative profiles.

Johan Lange nearly lost his sporting director job this summer with Spurs strangely interested in Sebastian Kehl, and while there have still been whispers of a bigger hire coming into replace him, those have quelled with Spurs supporters mostly happy with the star players Roberto De Zerbi has urged Lange and Vinai Venkatesham to bring in.

But Tottenham also did sign big players last summer, too, specifically Xavi Simons and Mohammed Kudus. Both men panned out very well for Spurs in the 2025/26 season despite dealing with major injuries - and Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor as their managers.

The thing is, Johan Lange still has something huge he needs to address head on and stop a disturbing trend that has plagued Tottenham for decades. Spurs have always, always taken the cheap route with signing goal scorers, and it has become an even bigger problem in recent years.

Tottenham have lost Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, and their only major left wing or striker addition was Dominic Solanke in 2024. Spurs paid a record 65 million pounds for Solanke, but he was only their record signing as a reflection of how frustratingly cheap Spurs have been over the years.

Because Solanke for 65 million pounds was a budget signing, in the sense that Spurs signed him, an inferior player, to skimp on paying market value for what a title contender - or title hopeful, at least - should be paying for a No. 9. Spurs lost a 100 million pound player in Kane and another player who was worth that much in his peak years in Son, and all they have spent is well under 100 million pounds for Mathys Tel on the left and Solanke in the middle. That thinking has to change this summer.

Remember, signing Solanke and Richarlison for 120 million pounds combined ended up being more expensive than signing one truly great striker. Sometimes, the "cheap" strategy is really just a lot more expensive - not to mention all the winnings lost by ranking lower in the Premier League.

Spurs have needed more explosion in wide areas, and if the recruitment team believe he can become a top-class player, then this is a move worth pushing hard on.

What is especially exciting is the idea of adding him to a squad that already looks far deeper than before. The experienced signings should help the team become more competitive straight away, so there is actually room to give a talent like Mbaye time to settle. That could be the perfect environment for him.

There will always be some risk with an 18-year-old leaving PSG and trying to establish himself in the Premier League, but Tottenham should not be afraid of that. The club need more ambition in the market, more bravery, and more players who can become stars rather than simply fill gaps.

It was the worst possible way for England to go against a historic World Cup rival, and it was obvious that the players were not happy with the way they were set up to play and had reservations about the philosophy Tuchel displayed as their coach.

After the game, England's 32 year old striker Kane, who is still one of the Ballon d'Or favorites despite not reaching the World Cup Final, was asked a very difficult question that has been in the back of some minds during this year's tournament. Is it possible Kane ends up retiring before the next World Cup in 2030?

Harry Kane is not ruling out retirement

Kane gave a pretty candid answer, and while he said that he cannot make a decision with so many raw emotions after a World Cup elimination, he does not know for sure what the future holds for him, leaving that possibility open despite being in his prime as a striker at 32.

The Bayern Munich superstar told reporters, via Kerry Hau of Sky Sports Germany, "It's too early to say that. I look from year to year. How I feel. I love playing for England. But of course, four years is a long time. Still, you can see how Messi still performs at a higher age. I don't know. I first have to process this exit. We gave everything, but it wasn't enough."

Nothing Kane said about how England played was wrong. It was clear that the players were giving everything they had, but what was left unsaid by Kane is that even if players give their all, if they are set up to lose by their coach, they will fall short.

But on the subject of his future, it is interesting Kane brought up the Man of the Match and record breaking World Cup goal scorer Lionel Messi. He is indeed going strong at 39, and Cristiano Ronaldo and Luka Modric are also still playing into their 40s. Kane can do it, too, and he knows he can, but it is telling that he isn't yet 100 percent sure. No Tottenham Hotspur or England fan wants to admit the end could be coming one day.
