Fabio Paratici thanks Tottenham for ‘accommodating’ his desire to return to Italy and promises he’ll be ‘watching’ the club closely as the new Fiorentina director.

Fiorentina and Tottenham confirmed on Wednesday that Paratici would become the Tuscans’ sporting director starting February 4, 2026.

This means the Italian director will complete the January transfer window in North London before returning to Italy.

“I want to thank Vinai and the Board of Tottenham Hotspur for accommodating my desire to return to Italy and join Fiorentina,” Paratici told Tottenham’s official website.

“I have loved my time at the Club, however this opportunity, together with the need to be based in my homeland, has led me to this decision.

“Spurs is a club that is very close to my heart. It has great people working for it, who are as passionate about the project as I am and want to bring sustained success. I have no doubt that they will achieve that and I will be watching closely from Italy.”

Paratici will take control of a struggling Fiorentina side that find themeselves fighting for survival with just 14 points in 20 Serie A matches.

Paratici to join Fiorentina in February

The Tuscans are three points from safety, but have been in good form in recent weeks, collecting one win and two draws in the last three league games.

Paratici returns to Italy after a long and successful spell at Juventus, where he first served as sporting director and then as the club’s Chief Football Officer.

The Italian moved to Tottenham in the summer of 2021 and returned to duties with the club in October 2025 after the completion of a 30-month ban.

Report: Tottenham Hotspur are in talks to sign 19-year-old defender

Spurs step up Souza pursuit as January plans gather pace

Tottenham’s intent for the January window is beginning to crystallise. As reported by The Standard, Spurs have submitted a second bid for Souza, the Santos defender identified as a priority target to strengthen the left side of the squad.

Standard Sport understands discussions have remained active following an opening offer of around £8m being rejected. Spurs have now returned with an improved proposal worth £13m, a figure that signals growing confidence a deal can be reached. The player is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League, which has helped talks progress.

Left-back search intensifies

Tottenham’s interest is driven by clear squad needs. Destiny Udogie has only recently returned to training after a hamstring injury, leaving a gap that has been filled in improvised fashion. Djed Spence, naturally a right back, has often deputised, while Ben Davies, now 32, stepped in for the 1-1 draw with Sunderland at the weekend.

Souza’s profile fits Tottenham’s broader recruitment approach. Despite having a release clause of €100m, £87.1m for overseas clubs, he is viewed at Santos as a high potential asset rather than an immediate cash out. He broke into the first team last season and made 24 appearances as Santos avoided relegation from Brazil’s top flight.

Broader January priorities emerge

While left back remains a focus, it is not the only area under review. The departure of Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace, coupled with Mohammed Kudus suffering a thigh injury, has sharpened the need for attacking reinforcements.

Head coach Thomas Frank has already indicated this will be a busy month. With Spurs sitting 13th in the league, questions have been raised about whether their position could deter targets. Frank dismissed that suggestion.

Photo IMAGO

“I think we are very attractive in many ways. I think Spurs is a fantastic club with a huge potential,” he said.

“I think some of the boxes you need to tick is, of course, the stadium and the training ground and the potential.”

Confidence despite competition

Frank acknowledged the realities of the market, adding: “Of course, if we compete against the three teams that are clearly ahead of us, City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, unfortunately, then those three clubs are probably more attractive right now.

“That’s not to say that we can’t attract some of the players that also want to go to those clubs.

“It depends a little bit if there is a spot available for the player to play in those clubs and here, for example.”

Souza’s case may test that belief, but Spurs appear determined to make him their first January signing.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Left back has been an obvious weak point whenever Destiny Udogie has been unavailable, and relying on makeshift solutions has felt unsustainable across a long season. Seeing Tottenham return with an improved bid suggests intent, not hesitation.

Fans will like the profile of Souza. Young, ambitious, already tested in a demanding environment, and keen on the Premier League. That hunger matters. Spurs supporters have grown weary of short term fixes and ageing cover. A signing like this points towards competition and development rather than simple cover.

There is also an understanding that January will not be straightforward. Sitting 13th is not where Spurs want to be, but the infrastructure, stadium, training ground, and long term vision remain powerful selling points. Frank’s comments will resonate with supporters who still believe Spurs are closer to challenging than the table suggests.

If Souza arrives, it will feel like a sensible first move in what needs to be a decisive window, not a statement signing, but a foundation piece.

Bournemouth vs. Tottenham Hotspur: game time, blog, and how to watch online

Bournemouth vs. Tottenham Hotspur: game time, blog, and how to watch online - Yahoo Sports
Description

After a disappointing draw against promoted Sunderland, Tottenham Hotspur are headed to Dorset to take on Bournemouth. The Cherries exposed the first set of cracks in Spurs’ armor in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, a match in which a 0-1 loss felt like a lucky escape for Spurs.

That performance was an especially poor one that has unfortunately become the norm this season. Thankfully, Bournemouth aren’t exactly flying either; although that’s largely been a function of a failing defense (as opposed to Spurs’ stuttering attack) with a number of high scoring draws the culprit for Bournemouth dropping so many points.

In that sense, this match feels very much like stoppable force vs. movable object. Let’s see which breaks first.

The Hoddle of Coffee: Tottenham Hotspur news and links for Wednesday, January 7

The Hoddle of Coffee: Tottenham Hotspur news and links for Wednesday, January 7 - Yahoo Sports
Description

Are we already a week into the new year? Goodness, time flies. And sometimes it’s easy to forget or not commit to those new year resolutions we set for us each year.

Today’s hoddle will be just about that. I’m going to list some of my resolutions this year. Both those related to Spurs and those that are not. Let’s get to it:

Non-Spurs resolutions:

Drive my car more: I find it hard to drive in Washington DC. Everything is like 3 miles away, so why take my car when I can walk or hop on the metro? Well, that thinking could lead to some battery and engine issues for my vehicle. So I resolve to put more miles on my Subaru Crosstrek. Maybe it’ll even lead to more exploring.

Waste less food: I think this is a worthy cause to resolve. I found myself tossing food into the bin far too often last year, and every time it upset me. So this year I want to shop smarter and eat more consciously. I now happen to be out of apples, bananas, blueberries, eggs and peanut butter. So I still have to learn how to find the right balance.

Set a new personal best in the marathon: I should crush my previous time of 3:37. I set a new personal best in the half not long ago at 1:26. I usually like to double that time and add 15 minutes to get a conservative estimate on the marathon. Those maths would bring me to about 3:10, which is reasonable. It’s still too soon I think to identify a goal time, but I’d like a sub-3:10 marathon. If I can comfortably run 16 miles in 1:56, then the maths show I can do a sub-3:10 and – maybe, maybe – push towards a 3-hour marathon.

Carty-Free and Spursy resolutions:

Update the Track of the Day playlist on Spotify more often: This seriously got away from me for close to two years. I spent a tonne of time updating it for you all before Christmas. I’m trying really hard to update it as I schedule each hoddle. I don’t like adding one more responsibility for me to do every single day, but I want to do it for you all.

Go to more DC Spurs outings: My running commitments have kept me from joining the DC Spurs folks last season (and all of this season). Maybe I’ll be able to squeeze in a game before this season ends – all depends on the marathon training schedule. But I have a lot of fun at the Irish Channel (sometimes I spend too much money there).

Get a new Spurs kit: This is the lowest of the priorites because it’s really expensive. I still wear my 16-17 Walker kit every matchday. It just works ! But if I can show up to DC Spurs with a Ben Davies away kit from this season? That’d be tops.

Enjoy your Wednesdays, everyone. And be kind to each other in the match and post-match threads later today.

Sunderland XI vs Tottenham Hotspur – Predicted lineup and team news

Submitted by daniel on
Picture
Description

Sunderland travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon while aiming to maintain their incredible push for a Champions League spot.

Régis Le Bris has led the Black Cats to seventh place, but they must now navigate the most severe player drain in the division due to the Africa Cup of Nations. Despite missing six senior players, Sunderland arrive with momentum after a hard-earned draw against Manchester City.

Sunderland team news

Régis Le Bris is managing a decimated squad. Key players Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, Arthur Masuaku, Noah Sadiki, Bertrand Traoré, and Habib Diarra are all away on international duty. Additionally, the defence remains weakened as Dan Ballard is a serious doubt with an ankle injury. In attack, Brian Brobbey faces a late fitness test after suffering muscular tightness in midweek. If he is unfit, Wilson Isidor is expected to lead the line.

Consequently, captain Granit Xhaka will play a pivotal role as he returns to North London. He will likely be partnered by Lutsharel Geertruida in a midfield tasked with containing Spurs’ creative threats. Trai Hume and Dennis Cirkin will provide the width from full-back, while Eliezer Mayenda and Simon Adingra are poised to support the lone striker. While Sunderland have struggled for goals on the road this season, their defensive organisation remains their greatest asset.

Sunderland Predicted Lineup

Sunderland predicted XI: Roefs; Hume, Mukiele, Alderete, Cirkin; Geertruida, Xhaka; Mayenda, Le Fée, Adingra; Isidor

When will the match kick off?
