Tottenham starting lineup
Forster - Spence, Gray, Dragusin, Udogie - Bergvall, Sarr, Maddison - Kulusevski, Son, Solanke
The team was down to bare bones for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Rangers, with just one senior center back available and 7 of 11 places on the bench occupied by academy graduates — and that was before Timo Werner was hooked at halftime for a performance that Ange Postecoglou deemed “unacceptable.” 18-year-old Archie Gray partnered Radu Dragusin in central defense and has now appeared in all positions across the backline during his debut season for Tottenham. Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies are all expected to be out until sometime around the new year.
Saints and Spurs are alike in that while the results have been far from desirable this season, the performances were actually quite good and they simply could not catch a break early in the season. Is it an 8-point difference, the gap currently between Southampton and safety in 17th? Probably not, but they would have a fighting chance. Tottenham’s makeshift defense could be the perfect remedy for the worst scoring record in the PL — 11 goals in 15 games.

Southampton vs Tottenham prediction
Enzo Maresca continued to burnish his Manager of the Year credentials as Chelsea came back to humble Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 in North London on Sunday.
Tottenham led 2-0 through 13 minutes but Chelsea responded with a vicious second half. Cole Palmer scored twice while Jadon Sancho and Enzo Fernandez joined him in a four-goal second half.
Chelsea are alone in second place and looking like genuine contenders for the Premier League trophy.
What did Maresca say? We have the Italian’s thoughts below.
Enzo Maresca reaction — How did Chelsea manager respond to comeback at Tottenham?
How much does it mean for the fans? “For the fans, for us. I said it during the week that we work every day to make our fans happy. Today, they can be happy.”
“To come into this stadium vs this team, 2-0 down, and to continue with the same plan on and off the ball. Overall, we deserve the win.”
Was it frustrating thar Cucurella slipped for the first Spurs goal, needed to change boots? “It’s more a question for Marc. They are mature enough to decide the boots they need for the game. It can happen. The most important thing is we were two goals down, we gave away two goals, and we continued and created many, many changes.”
Why the halftime subs? “We had a problem with Romeo Lavia, so Malo Gusto was inside. We moved Moises to center midfield. The change was good.”
Romeo Lavia injury update: "[Lavia] had hamstring problem, but now he’s okay. We don’t want to take chances in December, especially with so many games. Sometimes it’s better to lose 45 minutes than 5, 6 games.”
On his confidence with Cole Palmer at the penalty spot: “I know from Cole from a long time ago. I trust him in every aspect. Fantastic boy, fantastic guy. He needs to learn when he’s man marked the whole game. Yves Bissouma today.”
On title chances: “No, the plan or the idea is don’t allow them to slow down. Day by day in every session they cannot slow down because if one drops, there’s someone waiting to take their place.”
“Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City, they don’t slide like Cucurella did. But on all serious note, we are far from ready, far from this team, we are focused on the day by day to improve the team and play the game.”
Enzo Maresca post-game interview, reaction video
Ange Postecoglou’s reaction to Tottenham Hotspur’s brutal home collapse against heated rivals Chelsea tells us plenty about the mindset of the direct but embattled Australian, who was downtrodden at another disappointing loss.
Postecoglou’s men led Chelsea 2-0 through 13 minutes but fell apart to the tune of four second-half concessions, two from needless challenges inside Spurs’ 18, and the Blues left North London with a 4-3 win and all three points.
Is he feeling under pressure after clashing with fans at midweek? The seat may be feeling a bit warm, but surely Postecoglou has earned some leeway from chairman Daniel Levy.
So what did Postecoglou say? We’ll have the ex-Celtic mastermind’s words below.
Ange Postecoglou reaction — How did Spurs manager respond to collapse vs Chelsea?
“Look it’s a sore one for sure. It’s painful. We started the game really well. Then we lose Romero and nothing’s gone smoothly for us. I thought we had some big moments to get a third. Second half was a bit of a give and go for quite a while. Two penalties weren’t great. We need a bit more discipline in the box.”
On Romero’s early injury: “It’s a key point when you lose a player in the first 20 minutes, a center back, especially when you’re playing well. He felt something in his quad so he couldn’t continue.”
Similarity to midweek loss? “No, nothing. Absolutely zero from midweek. We didn’t play well at midweek. We played well today. They’re a good side, a top team. We got disrupted in key moments and in the end the key moments decided the game.”
What Spurs need to learn? “Realize when we are playing our football, we’re tough to stop but we still need to maintain our disciplines. The two penalties we gave away, there’s no need. When you’re playing top teams, these momentum shifts change quite quickly.”
“I’m hoping Romero’s not too bad. Haven’t found the extent of Ben [Davies] injury. If we’re still thin on numbers in January, we’ll look cause we’ll need some help.”

LONDON — The Tottenham vs Chelsea player ratings were a lot of fun to dish out in a wild London derby.
These two always deliver drama, and did again in a seven-goal thriller at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski had Spurs 2-0 up early, Chelsea held their nerve and came roaring back to make it 2-2 through Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer. Enzo Fernandez then made it 3-2 and Palmer wrapped up the win with a cheeky Panenka penalty kick to make it 4-2. Heung-min Son made it 4-3 in stoppage time, but Chelsea held on for the win.
Below are the Tottenham vs Chelsea player ratings out of 10, with analysis on each player.
Tottenham player ratings
Fraser Forster: 6 — Could he have done better with Sancho’s goal? Perhaps. Still, made a couple of great stops and was left so exposed.
Pedro Porro: 6 — Great on the ball and going forward. Offers Spurs so much in attack. Good battle with Sancho but tired defensively.
Cristian Romero: 6 — Subbed off when Spurs were 2-0 up and the game seemed to change on that. Visibly upset with being injured after just coming back.
Micky van de Ven: 7 — Did his best to hold things together at the back and some great marauding runs forward. So tough to come straight back from injury and was subbed off in the second half, more as a precaution.
Destiny Udogie: 6 — Some sloppy passing out of the back and Palmer gave him a torrid time in the second half.
Pape Matar Sarr: 6 — Worked so hard to close Chelsea down in midfield. But gave away a silly penalty kick for fouling Palmer late on to make it 4-2.
Yves Bissouma: 5 — Was doing well in midfield to push high, but gave the penalty kick away. Then crumbled.
Dejan Kulusevski: 8 — Scored a beauty, set up so many chances and was brilliant drifting around and launching counters.
Brennan Johnson: 6 — Great cross for Solanke’s goal but faded in the game after Cucurella sorted his boots out.
Dominic Solanke: 8 — Proper strikers finish for his goal, bullied Colwill early on and ran himself into the ground to try and get on the end of chances.
Heung-min Son: 7 — Almost scored a beauty in the first half and gave Caicedo a torrid time at right back. Missed a big chance in the second half, which may have been ruled out by VAR, and scored a late consolation.
Substitutions
Radu Dragusin (on for Romero 15'): 5 — Struggled to cope with Chelsea’s movement and dragged all over.
Timo Werner (on for Johnson 53'): 5 — Had a few decent runs on the right but no end product.
Archie Gray (on for Van de Ven 79'): N/A
James Maddison (on for Kulusevski 79'): N/A
Lucas Bergvall (on for Bissouma 79'): N/A
Chelsea player ratings
Robert Sanchez: 5 — Some really sloppy balls out of the back in the first half. Settled down in the second but poor play got Chelsea off to a bad start.
Moises Caicedo: 6 — Poor first half at right back but better when back in central midfield. Won the crucial penalty to make it 2-2.
Benoit Badiashile: 6 — Shaky display on the ball and Solanke ran him all over the place.
Levi Colwill: 6 — See above. Dug in there but Solanke got the better of him in the battle.
Marc Cucurella: 6 — Recovered well after two slips led to Spurs’ two goals early on. Changed his boots and he was back to normal. Bizarre.
Romeo Lavia: 7 — Really good in the first half winning the ball back and playing incisive balls quickly. Taken off at half time with Gusto on at right back and Caicedo moving to midfield. Took a whack before the break, so hopefully he’s okay.
Enzo Fernandez: 7 — Popped up with a huge goal to make it 3-2 and it was a lovely volleyed finish. Overpowered Spurs’ midfield in the second half.
Pedro Neto: 8 — Some powerful running on the right and was too much for Udogie to handle in the second half.
Cole Palmer: 8 — Two penalty kicks, including a Panenka, and oozes class. Always pops up in dangerous positions and impacts the game.
Jadon Sancho: 9 — Excellent display. Scored the first after a driving run. Lovely ball which led to Chelsea’s first penalty, and denied by Forster from close range. He was so good on the ball.
Nicolas Jackson: 7 — Ran in-behind well and denied by a couple of good blocks. Looked disappointed when subbed off.
Chelsea erased a 2-0 halftime lead to rampage past Spurs in a 4-3 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
Jadon Sancho began the comeback, Enzo Fernandez also scored, and Cole Palmer converted two penalties as Enzo Maresca’s men strengthened their second place footing on the Premier League table.
Spurs scored through Heung-min Son deep in seven minutes stoppage time, but they did not have enough time to find a dramatic equalizer. There will more questions and growing pressure on boss Ange Postecoglou.
WATCH - Tottenham v Chelsea
Chelsea’s 31 points are four behind Liverpool, who have a match-in-hand, and two clear of Arsenal. Spurs’ 20 points are good for 11th place, ahead of Newcastle on goal differential.
When Tottenham and Chelsea collide sparks usually fly and it was no different between the great rivals on Sunday, as Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski gave Spurs a two-goal advantage by the 13th minute in North London.
Spurs deserved their halftime lead with a 8-5 shots edge and a 1.30-0.65 edge in expected goals, but the second half was almost exclusively Chelsea. The Blues put five of nine shots on target, piling up 2.18 xG.
What’s next?
Chelsea go to Astana for an early 10:30am ET Thursday kickoff in the Conference League, then host Brentford for a late 2pm ET kickoff on Sunday.
Spurs go to Glasgow to meet Rangers on Thursday in the Europa League, then visit Southampton at 2pm Sunday.

Tottenham vs Chelsea live updates! — By Joe Prince-Wright at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Fulltime — Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea
Regardless our last update, it was too little too late.
Heung-min Son goal — Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea
Substitute Maddison drives the touchline and cuts back to Son for a fine finish, but it’s seven minutes into seven minutes stoppage.
Too little, too late?
Chelsea penalty, Palmer scores panenka — Tottenham 2-4 Chelsea
Pape Sarr fouls Palmer, who was back to goal on the left edge of the 18. It’s an easy penalty.
Cole Palmer faces Fraser Forster from the spot again, and beats him again... this time with a panenka!
Triple change for Tottenham
Archie Gray, James Maddison, and Lucas Bergvall will try to help Spurs rescue a point or better, taking the place of Micky van de Ven, Dejan Kulusevski, and Yves Bissouma.
Enzo Fernandez goal — Tottenham 2-3 Chelsea
Cole Palmer dribbles into and out of several phone booths on the right flank, shaping to shoot but seeing his effort spin off the shin of a Spurs defender.
It falls onto the path of Enzo Fernandez, who slices through a shot to beat Fraser Forster..
Chelsea have come all the way back to take a 74th minute lead.
Penalty to Chelsea... and Palmer slots it home — Tottenham 2-2 Chelsea
Penalty kick to Chelsea. Bissouma slides in and catches Caicedo. Great ball from Sancho. Obvious penalty kick. Cole Palmer slots it home, as expected, and Chelsea are deservedly level. 30 minutes to go. Can they win it? They have all the momentum. The home fans have gone really quiet here in north London all of a sudden...
It is all Chelsea
Spurs have been doing a lot of defending since half time. Chelsea cranking up the pressure.
Forster denies Sancho
Great stop from Forster to deny Sancho from close range. Then the game goes end-to-end again with Kulusevski’s cross just missing its target, then Fernandez curls inches wide at the other end. And so it continues, back and forth and back and forth. What a wild game.
Lavia off and Gusto on for Chelsea
Romeo Lavia hasn’t come back out for the second half. Malo Gusto is on at right back with Caicedo shifting in to midfield. Lavia was excellent in that first half and did go down with an injury just before the break, but this was supposedly a tactical switch.
Half time: Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea
What a first half of football that was. Amazing attacking play from both teams. Tottenham pressed Chelsea into so many mistakes, while Spurs were sloppy with the ball at the back themselves too. Spurs should probably be further ahead but Chelsea will fancy their chances of turning this around.
Sarr hits the bar; Solanke then goes close
A corner is whipped in by Son and Sarr flicks it towards goal from close range but it his the bar. A poor Chelsea giveaway moments later allows Son to run in on goal and his cross for Solanke comes in quick and the Spurs striker can’t quite sort out his feet as his tame effort is saved.
Palmer denied by Forster, then Neto’s shot is blocked
Cole Palmer is in and has a lot of time to think about it. His low shot is pushed away by Forster, then Neto’s rebound is blocked. As Neto hit that something from the crowd was thrown towards him from the South Stand.
This is beautiful chaos. Son curls just over this time
How have we only played 24 minutes!? It could be 4-4. Son curls a wonderful effort inches over the bar. We are watching basketball here. Basically.
Sancho scores a beauty — Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea
Well then! Jadon Sancho makes it 2-1. He cuts in from the left, is allowed to dribble to the edge of the box and his low shot finds the bottom corner. Game on! Only 18 minutes gone! Chaos.
Romero is off with an injury
He’s only just come back from injury but after 15 minutes Cristian Romero is off. He has his shirt over his head as he comes off. Dragusin is on for him. He’s played well recently and Spurs are in a great position. Still, far from ideal for Spurs.
Kulusevski squeezes it home — Tottenham 2-0 Chelsea
Solanke slots home early — Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea
Big team news for Spurs!
Hello from rain-soaked north London, where there is huge team news for Spurs. Both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are back fit and start at center back, so basically Spurs’ only absence from their strongest lineup is Vicario in goal. Forster continues there. Caicedo starts at right back for Chelsea in that hybrid role Maresca loves. Badiashille starts at center back with Fofana out. Neto and Sancho start out wide with Madueke on the bench.
Tottenham lineup
Forster; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Kulusevski, Sarr, Bissouma; Johnson, Solanke, Son
Chelsea lineup
Sanchez; Caicedo, Badiashille, Colwill, Cucurella; Lavia, Fernandez; Neto, Palmer, Sancho; Jackson
Tottenham team news, focus
Spurs will be hoping that Cristian Romero is fit as they only have one senior fit center back (Radu Dragusin) remaining. Son and Porro were rested from the start at Bournemouth on Thursday but will surely start this game.
OUT: Guglielmo Vicario (fractured ankle), Ben Davies (hamstring) Wilson Odobert (thigh), Mikey Moore (illness), Richarlison (thigh), Rodrigo Bentancur (suspension)
Chelsea team news, focus
Maresca has such a huge squad and he’s rotated it expertly in recent weeks. Sancho, Felix, Neto and Madueke are all playing their part, while Palmer and Jackson are guaranteed starters in attack. Lavia and Caicedo have some competition from Fernandez in central midfield too, while there are some intriguing selection decisions in defense with Fofana and James still out. Will Gusto and Tosin start at right back and center back respectively? Or will Caicedo go to a hybrid right back role like he did so well against Villa?
OUT: Omari Kellyman (thigh), Reece James (hamstring), Wesley Fofana (hamstring)
Tottenham vs Chelsea prediction
This should be fun, open and both teams will get plenty of chances. Go for a Chelsea win in a thriller. Tottenham 3-4 Chelsea.
Tottenham vs Chelsea preview
Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs have been hit by a raft of injuries recently but that doesn’t excuse some of the performances in recent games. They lost 1-0 at Bournemouth on Thursday and Postecoglou was confronted by angry Tottenham fans at the final whistle. Spurs are swashbuckling in attack but are having plenty of issues at the back, both with injuries and giving up big chances. Backup goalkeeper Fraser Forster has a huge job on his hands over the next few months with Guglielmo Vicario out.
