Tottenham Hotspur 2-2 Manchester City: Solanke inspires controversial comeback draw - NBC Sports
Description

Dominic Solanke scored twice — the first an extremely controversial marker and the second a sensational scorpion kick— as Tottenham Hotspur erased a 2-goal deficit to draw Manchester City 2-2 in North London on Sunday.

WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City full match replay

Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo gave City a 2-0 halftime lead but Solanke’s brace was enough to split the spoils as Spurs rode a strong quarter-hour performance to a point.

Man City finish the day alone in second place, six points back of leaders Arsenal.

Spurs pull back into 14th place with 29 points.

Solanke, Spurs make most of surprising non-call

Manchester City headed into halftime with almost any witness wondering just how bad the score line could look for Spurs by the end of 90 minutes. A few things changed at the break, including Spurs’ shape, but the moment that changed the game is doubly remarkable; For one thing, Spurs’ goal came out of almost nothing. For a second, it seems like it shouldn’t have withstood video review. In fact, there are questions as to whether the play was reviewed for anything but offside as Dominic Solanke swung his leg through the blocking calf of Marc Guehi in order to clatter it beyond the reach the Gianluigi Donnarumma.

What’s next?

City have a midweek League Cup semifinal second leg at home to Newcastle, then have to quickly rally for an 11:30am ET Sunday trip to Liverpool at Anfield.

Spurs continue a tough run of fixtures when they visit Manchester United at 7:30am ET Saturday before hosting Newcastle United on Feb. 10 and Arsenal on Feb. 22.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City final score: 2-2

Rayan Cherki 11', Antoine Semenyo 45', Dominic Solanke 53', 71'

Nine minutes stoppage time

Will we see a winner in North London?

City close to regaining lead

A scrum over a loose ball in the box as Guehi tries to restore City to the lead and Haaland’sn scooped bid at the rebound is deflected out for a corner kick.

Spurs deal with the service, but City quickly regain the ball to establish possession in the 83rd minute.

Dominic Solanke goal — Spurs 2-2 Man City

Sensational!

Conor Gallagher powers possession through Nico O’Reilly and his cross is jabbed into the side netting via a quasi-scorpion kick.

Rayan Cherki limps off

Cherki played quite a bit after his first-half ailment, but he can’t continue and will be replaced by Tijjani Reijnders.

Rayan Ait-Nouri is replaced by Nico Gonzalez as well in the 70th minute.

Controversy over review

The goal is currently being called a Marc Guehi own goal, which on its own you would think is enough to call it void. Broadcast says offside was reviewed but not the shot itself.

Guehi did not swing his leg at the ball. Solanke swung his leg through the back of Guehi’s calf and struck the ball.

This has to be a Solanke goal if it’s going to stand on the board.

Dominic Solanke goal — Spurs 1-2 Man City

Spurs get their goal, but will it stand?

Solanke gets on the right side of Khusanov, who looses his balance.

The forward that strikes through the leg of Marc Guehi to hit the ball past Donnarumma.

It’s very strange that it’s not given as a foul, as Guehi established himself between the ball and the shooter.

Either way, 2-1.

Spurs start bright

The North Londoners work the ball into the 18 and Destiny Udogie arrives on the left to hammer a near-post shot on target.

Gianluigi Donnarumma gets to his right and makes a comfortable-enough parry, but Spurs look better out of the break.

Spurs halftime sub

Romero’s day is over in favor of Pape Matar Sarr as Spurs chase the game.

Halftime — Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Manchester City

Man City are in control here, both of the ball and the game.

Spurs have to hope to keep City’s goal number within reason by the end of this one.

Antoine Semenyo goal — Spurs 0-2 Man City

A wayward Spurs clearance into the heart of the City midfield quickly turns into danger.

Bernardo Silva uses the outside of his boot to move the ball past Cristian Romero and onto the path of Semenyo, who buries his chance.

Getting dicey

Man City are unhappy with some Spurs fouls including a nasty shot at Rodri’s legs from Randal Kolo Muani.

It went uncarded and it’s no surprise that Abdukhodir Khusanov sees a yellow for City with a responsive late tackle at the other end.

Rayan Cherki goal! Spurs 0-1 Man City

Bernardo Silva takes the ball off an unaware Yves Bissouma and quickly gets it to Erling Haaland.

The center forward drives up field and defers to Rayan Cherki, who has room to try his luck from 20 yards and beats Guglielmo Vicario to the far post.

Tottenham Hotspur lineup

Vicario, Udogie, Romero, Dragusin, Gray, Palhinha, Bissouma, Gallagher, Simons, Kolo Muani, Solanke

Manchester City lineup

Donnarumma, Nunes, Khusanov, Guehi, Ait-Nouri, Rodri, Silva, O’Reilly, Semenyo, Cherki, Haaland

Spurs vs Man City preview

Manchester City’s title push heads to North London for a Sunday match with domestic stumblers Tottenham Hotspur.

City enter the weekend four points back of leaders Arsenal, and they’re level with Aston Villa on 46 points. They recently snapped a four-match winless run in the league but have only lost once since November 22.

Erling Haaland got back on the score sheet at midweek and City looked great when he started in a unit with new back Marc Guehi and dangerous winger Antoine Semenyo. The latter two were ineligible for the midweek Champions League game and will be expected to star at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City

Spurs are winless in five-straight Premier League matches despite a strong UEFA Champions League run which earned them a bye to the Round of 16.

Draws with Brentford, Burnley, and Sunderland have been joined by losses to Bournemouth and West Ham as Spurs have made very little out of a favorable run of fixtures. Thomas Frank’s men have just two league wins since the calendar turned to November. Yes, really.

Spurs’ injury list is long and they haven’t been great at home to boot. Anything’s possible as Frank knows how to play the underdog role, but the likely result lies on the side of Pep Guardiola’s visitors. Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Manchester City.

It’s been a mostly miserable first season in charge for Frank, but Spurs (14 points) sit 5th ahead of Wednesday’s finale (3 pm ET) — not a bad debut in European competition, now if only they weren’t 14th in the PL and slipping toward the relegation zone for the second straight season. Spurs, who have won just two of 11 home league games this season, won all four at home in the Champions League. Meanwhile, Spurs, who have picked up 19 of their 28 PL points away from home, are yet to win on the road in the Champions League. So unpredictable, it’s predictable.

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Tottenham Hotspur boss say after draw at Burnley?

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Tottenham Hotspur boss say after draw at Burnley? - NBC Sports
Description

Tottenham Hotspur grabbed a point late on at Burnley but Thomas Frank is still in serious trouble as their manager.

MORE — Recap, video highlights

This time they took the lead at Burnley but were 2-1 down heading into the 90th minute. Then captain Cristian Romero equalized to snatch a point.

But Spurs fans in the away end turned against Frank in the second half with several chants lambasting his style of play and record at the north London club. To put it politely...

Below is the latest Thomas Frank reaction on yet another poor day for Spurs, as they sit eight points above the relegation zone and six points from the top four.

Thomas Frank reaction

General thoughts on the game: “I think it was a very good first half,” Frank told BBC Match of the Day. “Except from the last shot it was a first half we dominated. Created chances, scoring a goal, should have scored a second one and then we are out of sight and we can never, ever concede that goal just before half time. Then we went out in the second half and there was a little bit more back and forth, we were not as much on top, I don’t think we dealt well enough with that spell. Then we concede another bad goal. Can never concede those. Should never be that open. I think we had a strong end with strong character. We had a lot of offensive subs and go to get the equalizer and we had three or four very big chances, score on one of them, but this is a game where we create a lot of things, do more than enough to win the game. Just didn’t defend well enough in two situations... My thing today, we created a lot of chances, that has sometimes been a little bit the problem, but today we did that. Normally we’ve been quite strong defensively but we can never concede the two goals.”

On Dubravka being in fine form in goal for Burnley: “Yeah, he had a fantastic game. With some fantastic saves. Of course praise to him.”

On being important to focus on the character to get something when being 2-1 down late on: “I think it is very important to focus on how we started the game. The first half was really good. We came here, boom, on top of it. Created chances, getting up 1-0, could have scored one, didn’t. And then it is very important to focus on how strongly we ended with the character and keep fighting until the end. That is good. Then we need to improve the bit in the middle.”

On only having two wins in 14 league games and the noise being cranked up: “I know but you can’t say that we didn’t do everything we could to win. We just need to keep improving.”

On if it is a time for calm heads: “I think so. I think it’s the only way it can be. Calm heads. Carry on. Keep doing what we think is the right thing. No doubt about that and you can see the game today, we do more than enough to win the game. So we need to defend better in two situations and of course score a goal more and that could have been the difference when you’re up 1-0.”

On if he feels they are getting closer to getting victories: “Yeah, I think we do a lot of things right today again,” Frank told Sky Sports in the UK. “So of course it is frustrating to stand here only getting one point where we did more than enough and especially the first half we should be out of sight. But that is football.”

On the goalscoring ability of his center backs: “Big praise to Micky and Cuti for scoring the goals. They do very, very well there. Also highlights a little bit that we need to get goals from other angles as well.”

Burnley 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Romero grabs a late point for struggling Spurs

Burnley 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Romero grabs a late point for struggling Spurs - NBC Sports
Description

Tottenham Hotspur rescued a point at Burnley on Saturday as Cristian Romero’s 90th-minute header grabbed a 2-2 draw.

But the pressure is far from off Thomas Frank as Spurs have won just two of their last 14 Premier League games.

WATCH — Full match replay

Spurs took a deserved lead through Micky van de Ven’s strike in the first half, but right on half time Axel Tuanzebe made it 1-1. Martin Dubravka made a string of fine saves throughout, then Burnley took the lead through Lyle Foster.

But Romero popped up late on to grab a point, which neither team will be happy with.

With the draw Burnley move on to 15 points and remain in the relegation zone and running out of time. Spurs are on 28 points.

Spurs’ lack of belief under Frank sums up their struggles

Yes, they scrambled to grab a draw and that could be something moving forward. But Spurs still lacked belief throughout this game. Despite Martin Dubravka pulling off some stunning saves, you never felt like Spurs’ players believed they would score. There was more creativity and purpose about Spurs’ play than for most of this season, but they looked extremely vulnerable on the counter in the second half and conceded two poor goals. That is nothing new under Frank and the bags under his eyes and the way he trudged off the pitch in front of the Spurs fans who had been chanting for him to be fired for most of the second half said it all. Frank is in a very tough moment and his players just don’t seem to believe in what he is asking them to do. They were lucky to leave Burnley, who are now 14 games without a win in the Premier League, with a draw on Saturday.

What’s next?

Burnley head to Sunderland on Monday, February 2. Spurs host Man City on Sunday, February 1.

Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur score: 2-2

Tuanzebe 45+1', Foster 76'; Van de Ven 38', Romero 90'

Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur live updates! — By Joe Prince-Wright

Romero heads home!

Spurs equalize in the 90th minute with a wonderful header from Romero. Yet another goal from a center back for Spurs. Five minutes of stoppage time to go too!

Simons smashes the crossbar!

So close to a late equalizer for Spurs as Simons smashes the bar.

Dubravka makes another fine stop to deny Tel!

A great cross to the back post finds sub Mathys Tel and he does so well to direct his effort on target. It looks destined to go in but somehow Dubravka claws it away. Wow.

Foster has Burnley ahead!

Anthony plays in Foster and his first effort is saved but comes straight back to him and Udogie can’t keep it out. Burnley’s sub has them ahead!

Spence denied this time

Dubravka saves down low to deny Spence. Spurs are pushing so many players forward and Burnley look very dangerous on the counter now.

Broja denied by Vicario

With Spurs pouring forward, Burnley hit them on the break. The ball over the top finds Broja and he’s in but Vicario denies him twice. The offside flag then goes up but Vicario is down hurt. He’s up now. That was a tight offside call.

Dubravka with another big save

Simons clips in a cross and Solanke’s header from close range is saved really well by Dubravka. Really open game at Turf Moor.

Brilliant block from Van de Ven

Excellent play from Burnley as Broja is in but Micky van de Ven slides in at the perfect time to block Broja’s effort.

Burnley equalize against the run of play!

Right on half time Burnley are level. Kyle Walker whips in a great cross from the right and Axel Tuanzebe is totally unmarked as he finishes. Spurs have dominated the first half but Burnley are level and Thomas Frank will not be happy with that defending.

Van de Ven smashes home!

That goal was coming. A short corner sees the ball whipped in to the back post and Burnley can’t clear as Micky van de Ven smashes home with a clinical low finish. Spurs have scored more goals from corners (12) than any other Premier League team this season, and have the most goals from defenders (8) in the league too.

Dubravka denies Gallagher!

The corner comes in and Dubravka makes two fine saves, including one from Gallagher. Spurs are pushing hard to take the lead before half time.

Odobert denied by Dubravka

What a stop by Martin Dubravka! Odobert curls a beauty towards the far corner but Dubravka’s fingertip saves sees it go out for a corner.

Porro so close to an opener!

Pedro Porro whips a free kick up and over the wall from the edge of the box, but the ball flies inches wide. Moments later another free kick from Porro is up and over the wall but Dubravka pushes it away and there wasn’t as much pace on the second free kick.

Pires scores, but he’s clearly offside

Marcus Edwards with a nice dink into the box and Broja’s header towards the back post finds Lucas Pires as he taps home. But he’s clearly offside. Good play from Burnley.

Almost a goal for Spurs right away

Wow. Inside 30 seconds Spurs have a great chance to take the lead. A long ball forward drops over the head of Kyle Walker and he didn’t see Djed Spence behind him. He hooks the ball across goal but Burnley scramble it clear with Solanke lurking. Great direct start from Thomas Frank’s side.

Burnley lineup

Dubravka; Tuanzebe, Esteve, Humphreys; Walker, Florentino, Ugochukwu, Pires; Edwards, Broja, Anthony

Tottenham Hotspur lineup

Vicario; Danso, Romero, Van de Ven; Porro, Gallagher, Bissouma, Spence; Odobert, Xavi; Solanke

Burnley team news, focus

Josh Cullen is out for the season which is a huge blow as he is the captain and heartbeat of this Burnley side from midfield. Zian Flemming could be fit to return and give Parker another option up top. Burnley will look to keep it tight and pounce on the counter.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Spurs are without Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus as their attacking options remain limited. Having Dominic Solanke back fit and leading the line is a huge help though. But Ben Davies and Lucas Bergvall have also gone done with injuries recently as Frank is using the versatility of the players he has available impressively.

Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur preview

Spurs secured a huge midweek Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund, as they’re in the top eight of the table with one game to go. Frank has seen some of the pressure ease on him, for now, but there’s no way Spurs can lose this game at Burnley and make it three defeats on the spin in the league.

Burnley haven’t won any of their last 13 Premier League games and have lost nine of those, but they have picked up impressive draws against Manchester United and Liverpool in their last two outings. However, Scott Parker’s side are still in the relegation zone and eight points from safety with games running out.

Burnley vs Tottenham Hotspur prediction

This feels like Spurs will be full of confidence and get the win they need to kick on from here. Burnley 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur.

Beleaguered Thomas Frank leads his struggling Tottenham Hotspur side against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday in a simply massive game for his future as Spurs boss.

MORE — Latest Champions League table

Following their shock 2-1 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday, Frank is under serious pressure with just two wins from their last 13 Premier League games. He has taken training ahead of this game but reports suggest Spurs’ hierarchy are considering Frank’s future given the poor results since he took over in the summer. Frank knew this job would be difficult but the lack of creativity at one end and huge mistakes at the other are adding up to a sorry state of affairs. But all of that aside, Spurs still have a chance to finish in the top eight of the Champions League and are level on points with Dortmund (11) as this competition has provided some solace for Frank.

After a tough couple of years Dortmund have rebuilt strongly under Niko Kovac. They have lost just once all season in the Bundesliga and in Serhou Guirassy they have a clinical forward who leads the line so well and there are so many talented attackers buzzing around underneath him. They have been involved in some incredibly high-scoring games in the Champions League and are the joint-highest scorers in the competition this season with 19 goals in six games.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Injuries are once again adding up as Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies, Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus are all out. Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons and Archie Gray are all struggling too, while Dominic Solanke’s return from long-term injury was the only positive from a poor display against West Ham at the weekend. Frank has tried to be pragmatic as Spurs boss but it isn’t working. Perhaps his best chance of success is to just open up and go for it?

Borussia Dortmund team news, focus

Kovac has Guirassy leading the line and Julian Brandt, Karim Adeyimi and Felix Nmecha all chipping in with goals. Marcel Sabitzer is tasked with controlling things in midfield but he’s out injured. Anyway, Dortmund will hope to cause chaos with balls directly up to Guirassy and then feast on Spurs’ defensive problems.
