Description

Both Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim have some key decisions to make for the Europa League final and that is why the Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United predicted lineups are so hard to, well, predict.

MORE — Live analysis, prediction, head-to-head, watch live info for Spurs v Man United

Wednesday’s Europa League final couldn’t be any bigger for these two clubs as they aim to save their season by winning this trophy and qualifying for the Champions League in the process. Small decisions Ange and Amorim make will have a huge impact, and there are so many different ways they could go with their team lineup from the start, plus planning for when subs will come in will be crucial.

Spurs have limited options in the central attacking midfield areas due to recent injuries, while the fitness of captain Heung-min Son continues to cause a problem. Will he start out wide? Will Mathys Tel or Richarlison get the nod instead?

MORE — Which Premier League teams can qualify for Europe?

Manchester United now have a wealth of options in the wing-back roles and in the attacking midfield positions. But who from Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount and Amad Diallo will start alongside captain Bruno Fernandes in one of the No 10 positions?

Below we take a look at the Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United predicted lineups with team news and analysis ahead of a massive final in Bilbao.

Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup, team news, analysis

——- Vicario ——-

—- Porro —- Romero —- Van de Ven —- Udogie —-

—— Bissouma —— Sarr ——

—- Johnson —- Bentancur —- Son ——

——- Solanke ——-

Vicario will start in goal and the back four is sorted and it is Spurs’ first-choice defensive quartet which is a huge bonus given the issues they’ve had all season long with injuries at the back. But they haven’t been as lucky with injuries in midfield. Postecoglou has lost trio Lucas Bergvall, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison to injury over the last few weeks and that has ripped the creative hub out of Spurs. How are they going to keep hold of the ball to try and control the tempo of the game? They either don’t try to do that and just keep attacking (very possible) or they deploy Rodrigo Bentancur further forward as a No. 10 with Bissouma and Sarr winning it back and getting the ball to Bentancur as quick as possible. That seems the most likely option as the Uruguayan can get on the ball, make key passes through to Spurs’ speedy forwards and will help them keep the ball higher up the pitch. Ange could go with Wilson Odobert, Brennan Johnson or captain Heung-min Son in a more central role to really bamboozle United’s sometimes sluggish central midfield duo, but that seems like a move for later in the game if Spurs are chasing things. It’s very likely Johnson will start on the right, with Dominic Solanke nailed on to start up top and it’s key the latter drags Lindelof and Maguire around to make them uncomfortable. But who starts on the left? Son has battled back from injury just in time for the final and started at Aston Villa last week. But he hasn’t looked his usual dynamic self all season long. Do you start Son and ask him to go flat out for 60 minutes? Probably. Then you have Mathys Tel and Richarlison who can come on and have a big impact and that duo seem more likely to play a big role off the bench. Spurs will need Son’s leadership and defensive work out there for the first 60 minutes, at least, to give them a foothold in the game.

OUT: Dejan Kulusevski (knee - MORE), Dane Scarlett (groin), James Maddison (knee), Lucas Bergvall (ankle), Radu Dragusin (torn ACL - out for season), Timo Werner (hamstring)

Manchester United predicted lineup, team news, analysis

——- Onana ——-

—— Lindelof —— Maguire —— Shaw ——

—— Mazraoui —- Casemiro —- Ugarte —- Dorgu ——

—— Diallo —— Fernandes ——

——- Hojlund ——-

There are plenty of questions surrounding United’s lineup but like Spurs they have some key decisions to make in a couple of areas. At this point it seems like Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire as certain to start as two of the three center backs. But will Leny Yoro be fit to start alongside them? If not, Amorim has two options: Noussair Mazraoui or Luke Shaw. It will probably be Shaw. That’s because Mazraoui has been key at right wing-back but Diogo Dalot could return from injury. It’s unlikely he starts and Mazraoui should play at right wing-back as the Moroccan has given United defensive balance to limit the impact of counters. Amad Diallo could also line up at right wing-back but in United’s 3-4-2-1 system it is much better to start him higher up the pitch now he’s fit. In midfield the duo of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have formed a formidable partnership in this competition and it will suit them massively that Spurs are without the trio of Bergvall, Kulusevski and Maddison buzzing around them to create. Patrick Dorgu should continue as left wing-back, while the big decision for Amorim comes in one of the No. 10 roles. Both Mason Mount and Alejandro Garnacho have been key in recent weeks but Diallo has timed his return to fitness well and has looked so sharp since coming back from injury much earlier than expected. Given how good he’s been this season, it would be a shock if Diallo didn’t start alongside the brilliant Bruno Fernandes. Amorim needs both of them to create and get on the ball. To then have Garnacho and Mount to bring on to either create more chaos with Diallo moving to right wing-back if they’re searching for a goal, or stretch Spurs on the counter with Garnacho’s pace if United are ahead, is a great plan. Rasmus Hojlund will start up top once again and despite his struggles in front of goal he can cause problems with Spurs’ defensive line so high. If Hojlund can stretch Spurs with his powerful runs behind, that opens up a ton of space for Fernandes and Diallo to exploit.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur live updates

Fulltime — Villa 2-0 Spurs

Mission accomplished for Unai Emery’s men.

Spurs make two subs

Son and Reguilon are off for Dominic Solanke and Rodrigo Bentancur. in the 75th minute.

Boubacar Kamara goal — Villa 2-0 Spurs (73rd minute)

That’s a sensational shot.

Rogers lays off to Kamara, who is atop the 18 and cuts in from the right to smash a low shot inside the far post.

Gorgeous.

For Rogers, he’s the seventh player to record 10 or more assists in the Premier League this season.

Ezri Konsa goal — Villa 1-0 Spurs (59th minute)

John McGinn’s back post corner kick is nodded back into the fray from Ollie Watkins, and Konsa redirects it past Kinsky.

Villa have their breakthrough.

Spurs swap midfielders

Yves Bissouma is in for Pape Matar Sarr in the 53rd minute.

Still scoreless.

Konsa and Tel scrap

VAR is having a look at a flashpoint between Villa’s Ezri Konsa and Spurs’ Mathys Tel.

Sergio Reguilon is also looking bemused by something.

It was something with Amadou Onana.

No supplemental discipline coming for any of the above figures.

No changes at the break

Will Villa break down Spurs or find themselves behind the UCL qualification 8-ball?

Halftime — Aston Villa 0-0 Spurs

Kinsky shook off a shaky partial clearance early to be the difference-making player in the half with three saves and six recoveries against Villa’s eight shot attempts and 0.81 xG.

Kinsky saves from Konsa off free kick

Ezra Konsa gets on the end of a free kick with ease, but his header is down at Kinsky.

Villa have been more dangerous but Spurs are much improved from most of their recent Premier League showings.

Big intervention from Kinsky!

Villa sweep a cross between slack Spurs defenders and Morgan Rogers looks en route to an opener.

But Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky makes a great adjustment to slap the ball away from goal.

Spurs corner

Son has been bright and wins a corner for Tottenham with a hard cross from the left.

Martinez rises to collect the South Korean’s ensuing service.

Real chance for Son

Heung-min Son gets around Matty Cash and will to do well to beat Emiliano Martinez.

He doesn’t, and Martinez makes a comfortable save.

Aston Villa lineup

Martinez, Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen, McGinn, Kamara, Onana, Asensio, Rogers, Watkins

Tottenham Hotspur lineup

Kinsky, Spence, Danso, Davies, Reguilon, Sarr, Gray, Odobert, Moore, Tel, Son

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur preview

Spurs are looking to next Wednesday’s Europa League Final against Manchester United. That match is far enough away that Ange Postecoglou could play a first-choice team at Villa in order to stay fresh for the final, but the impetus to dominate will be on the other side of the pitch.

Villa Park will be very ready for this one, and Unai Emery’s men have been a lot better than Spurs this season on a week-to-week basis.

Villa sits sixth, behind Chelsea on goal differential, but they also know that the Blues finish with Manchester United and Nottingham Forest and could open the door to a top-five place and a spot in next season’s UCL.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham Hotspur prediction

There are a couple of games like this in Week 37, like the one at Stamford Bridge where Chelsea need a win and Man United face Spurs in the UEL. For that reason it’s so difficult to do anything but pick the team who’s:

been better this season, and

needs the win

Description

The Europa League final is all about one thing: can Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester United save their season?

Both are languishing in the lower reaches of the Premier League table after a truly woeful league campaign. But it’s in the UEFA Europa League where they’ve found solace, freedom and shown the best version of themselves. And now they meet in Bilbao for the ultimate prize: a spot in the UEFA Champions League for next season.

And a trophy, of course. But the riches of the Champions League and a chance to rebuild their squads with greater power to attract new talent and have a fresh start is driving both Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou.

It will be a nervous, fraught affair in Basque Country, with so much on the line for next season. Even if Postecoglou delivers a first trophy in over 17 years for Spurs, and a first European trophy in 41 years, it seems likely he won’t be in charge next season. Amorim needs to deliver a trophy to deem his first six months in charge of United as neutral as reaching the Champions League would give him some breathing space and much-needed funds to rebuild an extremely disjointed squad.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester United head-to-head record

The stakes couldn’t be higher, and these two know each other very well. Spurs have beaten United three times this season, 3-0 away in the Premier League in September, 4-3 at home in the League Cup in December and 1-0 at home in the league in February.

Overall Manchester United lead the head-to-head record against Tottenham Hotspur with 96 wins, 51 draws and 57 defeats in all competitions.

These two teams have only met in European action twice before, way back in 1963. Spurs won the first leg of their UEFA Cup Winners Cup second round tie 2-0 at home before losing the second leg 4-1 at Old Trafford (Sir Bobby Charlton scored twice late on) to lose 4-3 on aggregate.

Spurs have won the Europa League twice (1971-72, 1983-84) in their history, while Manchester United have won it once (2016-17).

Ange Postecoglou reaction — What did Spurs manager say after poor defeat vs Crystal Palace? - NBC Sports
Description

Ange Postecoglou looked tormented on the sidelines on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace and he also has another star player struggling with an injury.

Eberechi Eze scored in each half for Palace who were excellent against a much-changed Spurs side and, and Palace should have won by four or five.

Add to that the fact that key playmaker Dejan Kulusevski came off in the first half and Postecoglou did not have a happy Sunday.

He is obviously resting most of his key players for the Europa League final against Manchester United in Bilbao in 10 days, but this was far from ideal as his team put in a very poor performance.

Ange Postecoglou reaction

On the defeat to Palace: “It was disappointing, we never really got into the game and we didn’t control it at any time. We’ve handled it well so far, that’s not the issue.

“The issue is making multiple changes, we aren’t reacting well to that. If you think we wouldn’t have 20 league defeats without being in the final, then I don’t know how else to describe it.

“I’m disappointed, it’s clear we’re not anywhere near the level we need to be. We’re making changes and the guys are getting opportunities.”

Description

Crystal Palace coasted to a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, as Ange Postecoglou’s side lost yet again.

MORE — Watch full match replay

Eberechi Eze scored before and after half time as a dominant Palace side could have scored five or six.

Spurs are obviously all-in on the Europa League final on May 21 but Postecoglou suffered yet another injury scare as Dejan Kulusevski hobbled off in the first half.

With the win Palace move on to 49 points ahead of the FA Cup final at Wembley against Manchester City next Saturday. Spurs remain on 38 points and sit in 17th place.

Palace can cause FA Cup final upset

It’s been clear for sometime, but Crystal Palace are a very dangerous team and they will be feeling very confident ahead of the FA Cup final against Man City on Saturday. Oliver Glasner’s side will have licked their chops seeing the way Southampton shut down Man City on Saturday in a 3-4-2-1 formation. Palace play the same with talented wing backs Munoz and Mitchell in fine form and they have so much quality on the counter. Palace are set up well to face City. They know they won’t have much of the ball in the final and that is just fine with them. They love that. Sarr and Eze are so good at turning and running at defenses as soon as they get it and Mateta is such a handful centrally. Palace will still be huge underdogs in the final as they aim to win their first trophy in club history, but they will go in to the final truly believing they can win it. There is no pressure on Palace and they have individuals who can pull something out of nothing. Man City will be extremely nervous for this final.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace live updates! — By Joe Prince-Wright

Nketiah clean through but Kinsky saves

Palace should be 3-0 up late on. Nketiah is clean through but his shot is saved by Kinsky.

Ismaila Sarr heads over from close range

A cross is whipped in and Ismaila Sarr is unmarked but heads over from close range. Palace so close to a third. The camera cuts to Ange Postecoglou on the sidelines and he’s deep in thought.

Sarr heads wide

Spurs have a couple of big chances as Pape Matar Sarr arrives at the back post but heads Porro’s superb cross wide. That came after another cross had whipped across goal but Spurs couldn’t finish. It has taken until they are 2-0 down before Spurs have woken up.

Mateta denied as Palace keep up the pressure

Another Palace attack and Mateta dinks it around Danso but his shot is straight at Kinsky who saves awkwardly.

Eze scores again! — Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Crystal Palace

Wow. This is so easy for Palace. Bissouma is on for Bentancur at half time but Spurs don’t look any better defensively. Palace break and Sarr finds Eze, who is unmarked with Bissouma not tracking him, and he slots home easily.

Half time: Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Crystal Palace

A pretty awful first half from Spurs, as Palace could be 3-0 up, at least. It’s only one as Daniel Munoz has been sensational and set up Eberechi Eze to tap home just before half time.

Eze taps home after great work from Munoz — Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 Crystal Palace

Lovely play from Palace and Munoz is in down the right. He surges into the box and squares for Eze to tap home. VAR checks it for offside but the goal stands. Palace totally deserve this lead.

Eze’s deflected shot flies just wide, then Palace have another goal ruled out

Eberechi Eze drives forward and curls one towards goal. It takes a huge deflection off Kevin Danso and flies just wide of the post. From the resulting corner Palace have the ball in the net, but it’s ruled out as Antonin Kinsky goes down and the ball then bounces off Marc Guehi’s hand. VAR checks it and the handball is clear as Lacroix headed it onto Guehi’s hand.

Palace keep on coming

Munoz is in again but he gets the pass all wrong when he should shoot and Mateta is offside. Moments later Sarr has a shock blocked when he’s clean through, then Mateta’s effort is saved. Wave after wave of Palace attack.

Munoz flicks the crossbar

Munoz has been superb down the right and the Colombia right back surges forward again. His shot clips off the crossbar and goes over. Spurs can’t handle Munoz.

Kulusevski down for Spurs, and he’s forced off through injury

This is not want Tottenham Hotspur want. Kulusevski is caught late and is down receiving treatment. Palace have started really well and Spurs are yet to get going. A few minutes after going down, Kulusevski is off. He can’t continue. Mikey Moore is on in his place.

Palace thought they had taken the lead through Sarr... but VAR rules it out

That is a sweeping Palace move and Sarr finishes it off. Munoz crossed for Sarr and he taps home... but VAR has checked and it’s ruled out for offside. A reprieve for Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur lineup

Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Davies, Spence; Sarr, Gray, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Tel, Odobert

Crystal Palace lineup

Henderson; Richards, Lacroix, Guehi; Munoz, Lerma, Hughes, Mitchell; Sarr, Eze; Mateta

Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace prediction

If Spurs are favorites, it’s only down to host status and their midweek work in the Europa League likely further thins their edge over the Eagles. Eberechi Eze is in electric form and Palace may secure a win if Adam Wharton is able to start. All that said, we don’t know if Wharton will go so.... Spurs 1-1 Palace.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Crystal Palace preview

Tottenham Hotspur have reached the Europa League final versus Manchester United following a semifinal triumph over Bodo/Glimt, and now try to stay healthy and hold form while hopefully climbing out of 16th place on the PL table. Crystal Palace will be using this London derby as a dress rehearsal for the following weekend’s FA Cup Final against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium.

Oliver Glasner’s Eagles are winless in five league matches but have drawn thrice in a row after splitting points with Bournemouth, Arsenal, and Nottingham Forest. They’d love to keep winning in hopes of a top-half finish to the season — their 46 points are six shy of 10th-place heading into the weekend.

Dejan Kulusevski injury update — Tottenham star limps off injured vs Crystal Palace - NBC Sports
Description

Dejan Kulusevski going off with an injury is the last thing Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur would have wanted to see.

But it happened on Sunday against Crystal Palace just 10 days before Spurs’ big game of the season.

The Europa League final against Manchester United is coming up in Bilbao on Wednesday, May 21, and any injuries now could rule out players from that showpiece, and season-saving, event.

Dejan Kulusevski latest injury news

Kulusevski was caught by Marc Guehi and stayed down. It appeared to be a contact injury as he took a heavy whack.

After trying to run it off Kulusevski had to come off and walked off the pitch under his own power, as he was limping heavily.

Hopefully this is just a precautionary move from Spurs to sub off Kulusevski, as Postecoglou will not want to lose any other key players after a season of battling through injuries.

With creative attacking midfielders James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall already out for the rest of the season, he needs Kulusevski to be fit as his creative flair could be key in the Europa League final.

Description

Bodo/Glimt’s fairytale run to the Europa League semifinals has been a joy to watch but Tottenham Hotspur aim to finish off the job on Thursday and reach the final in Bilbao.

Trailing 3-1 from the first leg in north London last Thursday, Norwegian upstarts Bodo/Glimt know they are up against it. But they always have been and that hasn’t fazed them so far, plus they have plenty of key players set to return for this second leg. The late goal they scored at Spurs last week could be crucial and Bodo/Glimt are very good at home, as their tiny Aspmyra Stadion holds just over 8,000 fans and has an artificial pitch which could level the playing fields significantly. In the knockout rounds of the Europa League they’ve won all three home games by an aggregate score of 10-2. An early goal for Bodo/Glimt will get Spurs’ nerves jangling and create quite the stir in northern Norway. No team has ever overturned a two-goal deficit from the first leg of the Europa League semifinals to reach the final, but minnows Bodo/Glimt love proving everyone wrong.

Spurs and Ange Postecoglou know they have more than one foot in the Europa League final in Bilbao where they will likely face Manchester United, a team they’ve already beaten three times in all competitions this season. That makes Spurs the favorites for this competition, just, but they have to finish off the job in Norway first. They were clinical and ruthless in the first half against Bodo/Glimt last week but Ange will have been disappointed with conceding a late goal and Spurs have suffered more injuries ahead of this second leg. Given their entire season depends on winning the Europa League the pressure is on, as they’re set for their worst-ever finish in the Premier League. But that awful league season will not matter if they win this competition and get back into the UEFA Champions League. Remember: Ange always wins a trophy in his second season at a club...

Bodo/Glimt team news, focus

Captain Patrick Berg, plus midfielder Hakon Evjen and striker Andreas Helmersen are all available after being suspended for the first leg which is a big boost for Bodo/Glimt. Defenders Ole Blomberg and Daniel Bassi both missed the first leg through injury, while the reigning Norwegian champions haven’t had a game since the first leg so have had a full week to prepare for the second leg. They will look to make Spurs uncomfortable and set pieces and counters will be crucial. An early goal for the hosts would change everything.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Spurs have lost Lucas Bergvall to injury, while James Maddison could also miss the rest of the season with a knee issue he picked up in the first leg. That is a real blow to Spurs’ hopes of winning the Europa League as the midfield creativity from that duo has been key at crucial moments in this competition. Dominic Solanke should be fit to lead the line, while captain Heung-min Son is close to a return. Spurs rested plenty of key players in their draw at West Ham on Sunday as their full focus is on winning the Europa League. Their season comes down to this and it’s all about holding their nerve and putting in a professional, solid display to reach the final.

West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur might’ve expected to be jockeying for table position in Week 35, but they didn’t expect it to be like this — 17th versus 16th at the London Stadium on Sunday.
