Two teams desperate for a win to get back on track in the Premier League meet on Tuesday as Spurs host Newcastle.

WATCH — Tottenham Hotspur v Newcastle

Thomas Frank’s Spurs lost 2-0 at Manchester United on Saturday as captain Cristian Romero was sent off and he let down his team. Spurs are now seriously in the relegation scrap as they sit just six points above the bottom three and despite reaching the Champions League last 16, Frank has to start picking up wins in the league. Fast.

Newcastle lost 3-2 at home to Brentford on Saturday as Eddie Howe was booed by some home fans as they continue to underperform. Newcastle have made the Champions League playoff round but sit just four points above Spurs heading into this game and despite injuries impacting them all season, Howe is under pressure.

Tottenham Hotspur team news, focus

Spurs are still without James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Mohammed Kudus, Lucas Bergvall, Richarlison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro, Ben Davies and Kevin Danso, while Romero is suspended and Djed Spence is battling to be fit. All of that adds extra pressure on Frank as he will likely go with the same starting lineup as the defeat at United on Saturday with Dragusin coming in for Romero. Solanke will lead the line up top and be supported by two of Kolo Muani, Simons and Odobert with Gallagher breaking forward from midfield.

Newcastle team news, focus

Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento, Joelinton and Emil Krafth remain out, while Lewis Miley and Anthony Gordon are being assessed. Howe will mix things up a little bit after the poor display at home against Brentford and it’s likely he starts Woltemade, Burn, Elanga and Ramsey.

Thomas Frank reaction: What did Spurs boss say on Man United defeat, Romero red card, relegation scrap? - NBC Sports
Description

Thomas Frank is in big trouble as Tottenham Hotspur’s manager, as they lost 2-0 at Manchester United on Saturday and lost skipper Cristian Romero to an early red card.

MORE — Video highlights, recap

Without a Premier League win in 2026, and during the last seven games, all of a sudden Spurs are in a serious relegation scrap despite making it through to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Yes, Frank has had incredible injury problems to deal with, but Spurs should never be in this position.

Here is the latest Thomas Frank reaction after Spurs’ defeat at Manchester United.

Thomas Frank reaction

On a frustrating day: “I think the first 30 minutes were a good away performance at a difficult place against a team with confidence and in a good flow. Then after the red card I am very proud of the players, the resilience, staying in the game mentality. Still be a threat at times to try to create something,” Frank told TNT Sports in the UK. “Very proud of them and then of course we just made the three offensive subs to try and push a bit more but we concede the second. The 60 minutes playing with 10 men, they put everything into it. Very proud of them. Very proud of our fans, who travelled in numbers. You could hear them loud throughout the game.”

On if United’s opening goal happens if Spurs have 11 players on the pitch: “No because that was the area they could exploit. It can always happen, of course. That was the area that got a bit more exposed.”

On Romero being in the headlines this week, the red card and the Spurs skipper feeling like he let his teammates down: “Cristian, first and foremost there is no intention to do the follow through and make a red. I think he clearly goes for the ball, unfortunately the way the rules are it is then a red. Cristian apologized to his teammates in the dressing room.”

On losing your captain for four games, injuries and the squad being very limited: “Yeah, it is. But it is what it is and we need to deal with it.”

On how Spurs move forward from this game: “I think a big area we’ve been working really hard on is the resilience. So we didn’t get a result out of it today but what they showed out there on the pitch I think was incredible. That is what we need to build on going forward to Tuesday night.”

On the Premier League table and if he is speaking to his Spurs players about being in a relegation fight: “Just focusing on the next game and that is Newcastle on Tuesday.”

Asked after the game if he has regrets about making Romero captain: “No regrets. He’s apologized to his teammates in the changing room. I think he’s one of the most important players.”

Manchester United player ratings

Senne Lammens: 6 - Didn’t have to much to do throughout. A very relaxed outing.

Diogo Dalot: 8 - Some surging runs forward on the right, had some pops from distance and a fine cross for the second goal.

Harry Maguire: 7 - Solid defensively and caused a nuisance from set pieces at the other end.

Lisandro Martinez: 7 - Stepped in to midfield well and got on the ball as much as possible.

Luke Shaw: 7 - Another really solid defensive display and had some chances to score too. Great to see him back fully-fit.

Casemiro: 8 - Went close with a header and kept popping up in dangerous areas. Lucky to not be seriously injured by Romero.

Kobbie Mainoo: 8 - Another assured display in midfield on the ball and so composed in tight areas.

Amad Diallo: 8 - Buzzed around everywhere and caused Spurs so many problems.

Bruno Fernandes: 8 - Kept having a pop and eventually got his goal late on. His quality on the ball is incredible.

Matheus Cunha: 8 - So close to scoring a stunner in the first half and worked so hard from the left.

Bryan Mbeumo: 8 - Took his goal calmly and like Diallo and Cunha, worked so hard in attack to unsettle Spurs.

Substitutes

Benjamin Sesko (on for Cunha, 75'): 7 - A focal point after coming on and played a role in the second goal as his confidence continues to grow.

Micky Van de Ven: 6 - On his return to the team, battled away in the absence of Romero.

Destiny Udogie: 5 - Had a tough time with Diallo and then subbed off through injury.

Joao Palhinha: 6 - Did well to try and protect the defense and keep it respectable.

Conor Gallagher: 5 - Put in a real shift but couldn’t have an impact on the game going forward.

Pape Matar Sarr: 5 - See above. Worked hard but just couldn’t get on the ball at all.

Wilson Odobert: 5 - Some nice touches but subbed off in the first half due to Romero’s red card.

Dominic Solanke: 6 - Some good hold up play and almost finished off a cross in the first half. A real handful.

Xavi Simons: 6 - Some nice touches in the second half and did his best to try and inspire Spurs to an unlikely point.

Cristian Romero shown straight red card for Spurs vs Manchester United: Which games will he miss?

Cristian Romero shown straight red card for Spurs vs Manchester United: Which games will he miss? - NBC Sports
Description

With 30 minutes on the clock Cristian Romero was shown a straight red card for Tottenham Hotspur at Manchester United on Saturday, as the Spurs captain once again lost his head.

MORE — Watch Man United v Spurs live

After overrunning the ball just outside his own box, Romero lunged into a tackle on Casemiro and his boot was raised and caught Man United’s Brazilian midfielder high on his ankle.

Romero had little complaints and just days after he had been dealt with internally at the club for hitting out at the lack of squad depth at Spurs amid a massive injury crisis, their Argentine center back was sent off again.

Which games will Cristian Romero miss?

Romero has already been sent off once this season, against Liverpool in December, so after getting another red card his punishment is greater than just getting a straight red card.

It means he will now miss the next four Premier League games, including the home game against Newcastle next week, the huge north London derby against Arsenal and London derbies against Fulham and Crystal Palace.

So, injury-hit Spurs will now have to play until March 15 in the Premier League without their best defender and captain. At least Romero will be fresh for their UEFA Champions League action...

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Spurs’ manager say about incredible comeback draw vs Manchester City?

Thomas Frank reaction — What did Spurs' manager say about incredible comeback draw vs Manchester City? - NBC Sports
Description

Thomas Frank looked like a proud Dad at the full time whistle as his injury-ravaged Tottenham Hotspur side fought back from 2-0 down at half time to Manchester City to draw 2-2 on Sunday.

Given all of the negativity around Spurs’ results (they’ve won just two of their last 15 league games) and general play, the boos rang out from the home fans as City cruised into a 2-0 lead.

But Spurs were much better in the second half and Dominic Solanke’s double grabbed a point for them, which some of their fans will be frustrated with because it now leaves Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal with a six-point lead atop the table.

Here is the latest Thomas Frank reaction following Spurs’ spirited comeback against Man City.

Thomas Frank reaction

On how he and his players took something from that match: “First and foremost I am extremely proud of the players and the character and mentality they have shown,” Frank told Sky Sports. “I am so happy that they, and we, got something out of it. And a well deserved point. I think there was a moment in the second half where we could have scored the third goal. I think it is even more impressive with the injury situation we have. Captain needs to be subbed off at half time because of illness. So we are down to the bare bones with everything. That character and never say die attitude from the players and the fans, the fans second half, it means so much. They helped us so much to come back in this game. I think it was a very good example of what we can do together. Building also from the Dortmund performance and togetherness. So that I am very happy with. I am also happy we finally got something out of a big second half because we showed that never say die attitude against Bournemouth, West Ham and I think it was Villa and now we finally got something. As I said before the game I think we are on something on the right track, I would say.”

On that being the best and most important 45 minutes of his time as Spurs boss so far: “I don’t know if it was the best but I think there are always big 45 minutes or big games in the season. I think that character the players showed, at half time they still stayed calm, we did the changes, we tried to instill belief, staff, players, everyone and how they went out in the second half and came back in a situation where fans are saying we are a little bit not in the best place because you are 2-0 down and all the injuries, captain needs to go off and all that, that just shows everything about the group. I think that never say die thing, they have shown that quite a long time now. But now we got the result as well. Which is big.”

On if a lot of people and team might have given up at half time: “Maybe. I don’t know. I can just say what we tried to do, the players tried to do and what we tried to create that never say die attitude. That is where we are resilient and we respond well to setbacks and I think we’ve shown it a few times and now we finally got something out of that. Inner belief was big. All of the players showed a fantastic attitude.”

On if he told the players at half time to give the fans some energy and things would turn: “I always believe. I know football, anything can happen. I always believe. We talked about the football bits, when we need to go high, go high in the pressure as we’ve done also in the first half but on the goal we need to be really strong in the 50-50’s. We go lower they can’t go through us, when we can play behind, then do that. If we can’t then keep the ball and take it minute by minute and eat away into the game.”

On how hard it is for him as a person when things are going wrong: “It is more fun when it is smoother, of course, but this is football. This is life. It can happen. You need to show resilience. You need to stay as calm as possible, need to carry on, but of course I feel a little bit that was started okay and then in one moment they just take two against five players and we make a mistake. We get very hardly punished in the first half. Not everything was perfect but also more punished. I am quite sure if we look back at the game the first half was not that bad. Of course the second half is much better.”

On the Spurs crowd signing late on and if they meant something to him: “It means not only to me, to the team, to the players, to everyone, I just think we’ve seen two good performances. The Dortmund game and this second half, when we are united fans and players, we can create magic. That is what we need to keep doing, keep pushing together. It meant the world to me, to all of us.”

On if he needs some more support with injuries and 24 hours of the transfer window left: “I feel 100 percent, plenty of support from Vinai, Johan, Lewis family, everything. We are definitely still in the market. But of course we are hit a little bit hard with injuries but let’s see.”

On what he said at half time: “I said a few things. We changed the system to 4-4-2. That is one thing,” Frank told the BBC. “But it is not about the system, we had to adjust the high pressure a bit so we were even better in that and won the ball back better. What we did in the middle pressure, also nothing through us, they did their bit as well. I think offensively especially playing a little more behind them when we could, put them under more pressure. And then that big belief. One minute at a time, one step at a time, one moment at a time, eat our way into the game. There is always an opportunity. That was the message.”

On playing to the strengths of Solanke in the second half: “It is quite evident now that Dom has been a big miss for us so we’ve been without him for six months. Now we have him back, four goals in four games speaks its own language. Today he was very impressive and he’s not fit yet. You see in the last 15 minutes he couldn’t run. That makes it even more impressive.”

On Pape Matar Sarr’s performance: “Very happy with Pape as well. I agree, I thought he was exceptionally good. Actually also happy with him at Frankfurt. But he just came back from five, six weeks away at AFCON without playing too much. We could not go with him from the beginning but second half very impressive.”

On how the fans reacted, especially at the end: “I think we can create something magic together. The players and the fans. When we are united, as we were, especially second half but also the Dortmund game. That atmosphere, that intensity, that is what pushed the players. They really needed it.”

On if he’s been hurting due to the criticism: “I prefer it going more smooth. I think that is fair to say. This is football. In these spells I think we have done more good things than bad things but we haven’t turned the performance into enough results. But I am very happy now we actually got four decent performances unbeaten and in a long spell showed character, mentality. But today we got that result as well.”

Pep Guardiola reaction — Manchester City boss speaks after blown 2-0 lead, controversial Spurs goal - NBC Sports
Description

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola struck a defiant tone after Spurs came back from 2-0 to draw his visitors via a controversial goal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

City led 2-0 through Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo and the game looked set to be a comfortable stroll to three points.

MORE — Spurs v Man City recap, video highlights

But Dominic Solanke scored twice to restore level terms, and the first goal was anything but straight-forward.

The center forward appeared to kick through the calf of Marc Guehi to force the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma, and broadcast later reported that the only review was for offside in the buildup.

Spurs seized control of the game and that point and looked like the only team set to score for a solid 15 minutes in North London.

It took some sincere prodding from his postgame interviewer to get him to discuss the Solanke incident. By the time he settled into a few more interviews, he was clearer.

“Well, if you do it to a striker it would be a penalty,” Guardiola said to BBC radio before adding, “I’m not a referee. ... Fascinating in the Premier League.”

Thoughts on the game? “Good game. After the goal they conceded we had to struggle 10, 15, 20 minutes. In general it was a really good performance, unfortunately we could not win.”

Your early strategy seemed to work, targeting their wider backs: “The game plan was try to play, score goals, and not concede.”

What happened to get them back in the game? “They put in more direct balls, they found the goal, and after that the momentum that always happens in the Premier League happened. It was not a big, big issue.”

On the status of the Premier League title race: “We are playing at a high level. We didn’t have the consistency to win the games when others were able to do it, Fourteen games is a lot of games. Six points. Next one.”

Dominic Solanke scores sensational scorpion flick goal for Spurs vs Man City: "When it goes in it is remarkable" - NBC Sports
Description

Dominic Solanke has scored one of the goals, if not the goal, of the Premier League season as his unbelievable flicked finish for Spurs against Manchester City was a thing of beauty.

“Solanke’s scorpion” will be on t-shirts, mugs and scarfs very soon.

WATCH — Watch Spurs vs Man City live on Peacock

How did he manage to contort his body and flick his heel out to get contact on the ball in the first place, let alone direct it into the far top corner!?

Solanke’s second half double saw Man City’s 2-0 lead evaporate and his second was very special and will be remembered for a very long time.

Solanke on his scorpion goal: “I love those finishes”

“It was a lovely goal to be fair!” smiled Solanke. “Had to improvize a bit. Was great work from Conor [Gallagher] and I think the ball was behind me a bit but I love those finishes, trying to make something out of nothing. When it goes in it is remarkable so I will be watching that back a few times.”

Asked if he watched the goal back on the big screens inside the stadium, Solanke admitted he had a sneaky look as fans gasped loudly every time a replay was shown: “Yeah I did. I was trying to stay focused on the game but I heard the crowd cheer every time it was on the screen so I had a few looks.”
