Tottenham's demolition of Everton prompts bookmakers into drastic action

Tottenham Hotspur's ruthless 4-0 win over Everton has prompted Paddy Power into an early payout for punters who backed the Toffees to be relegated this season.

The Blues avoided relegation last season despite two separate points deductions for breaching profit and sustainability rules. Sean Dyche's side find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League after the opening two games of the season and are among the early favourites to go down.

Ange Postecoglou's side ran riot earlier this afternoon condemning the Toffees to their second defeat of the campaign. Goals from Yves Bissouma, Christian Romero and a brace from Heung Min Son ensures Spurs of an unbeaten start to season and moves up to fourth in the table.

Spurs were dominant against a poor Everton side and punters will be thanking the home side for playing their part in lining their wallets so early in the season.

Paddy Power tweeted: "EARLY PAYOUT. After today's hammering, we thought we'd save everyone the bother of waiting...

"So, we've paid out early on EVERTON TO BE RELEGATED!"

Postecoglou hailed his side's excellent performance after the full-time whistle, telling football.london: "I said after the game, I thought the performance last week was excellent too, but you've got to also turn that sort of dominant performance into outcomes and results.

"We did today, we looked really threatening going forward all the time. We created many chances, different kinds of chances, and I thought we handled their threat which they still are from set pieces and long balls really well today. So there was a little discipline in both aspects of the game.

Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to football.london and others following Tottenham's 4-0 win against Everton on Saturday in the Premier League.

The Spurs boss was in a good mood following his side's dominant display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as they punished the understrength Toffees twice in each half. Yves Bissouma handed the best possible apology to Postecoglou and his team-mates after his recent indiscretion with a rocket of a shot in off the crossbar in the first half.

Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min then doubled his side's tally after pressing high up and catching Everton goalkeeper Jordon Pickford in possession before tapping home. It became 3-0 with 20 minutes to go as Cristian Romero headed home on his 100th appearance for the club from James Maddison's corner.

A fourth goal arrived when Micky van de Ven raced up the pitch before playing in Son who clinically fired through Pickford's legs and into the net.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold was among those putting the questions to Postecoglou after the match. Here is a full transcript with everything the Spurs boss said in the press conference at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Is that the kind of performance your team has been threatening for a little while now?

Yeah, the performance was excellent. I said after the game, I thought the performance last week was excellent too, but you've got to also turn that sort of dominant performance into outcomes and results. We did today, we looked really threatening going forward all the time. We created many chances, different kinds of chances, and I thought we handled their threat which they still are from set pieces and long balls really well today. So there was a little discipline in both aspects of the game.

You brought Yves Bissouma back and you said to him in pre-season that he had only scored in a friendly, that's what you want to see in the actual games isn't it?

Yeah, Biss was good and we know Biss is a good footballer. It's about him being the best version of himself and he will only get there if, as we've spoken a few times, discipline is a big thing for him and I thought it was a disciplined performance for him today you know. Not just the goal he scored, but he had a really important job for us. He knew they'd sort of play fairly direct and he had to be there to mop up second balls and intercept things and he was clean for the most part in possession. So good performance.

What did you make of Wilson Odobert's debut today?

Exciting. Like I said, he's different from our other wingers. He goes at his opponent and, you know, even if he wasn't successful, he went at him again and I think that's exactly why we bought him to the club. I mean, he's 19-years-old, his first game for his new club at home in front of 60,000. Yeah, really exciting.

Are you pleased with the versatility of your side, adapting to the situation, Son through the middle, but he ended with two goals, and there were threats from all over the pitch?

It's what we want to evolve into and we're still in the process of that. We had Deki playing in midfield today, Kulusevski, I thought he was really good and we had Sonny scored a goal through the middle and he scored a goal when he went out wide. I think we looked a threat from varied different areas and even set pieces. So, if we're going to turn compelling performances into consistent results, you'd need to have more than one avenue of attack. I thought we showed that today.

And you had Micky van de Ven's run for Son's second which probably got the biggest cheer of the afternoon?

Yeah, outstanding. I mean he's a pretty special footballer. Last year when we had that back four up and running, we were a pretty compelling team, but we also know we can't just keep putting them out there and I think with Romero, Micky and Destiny, they're not at peak fitness at the moment and they all sort of missed pre-season. So we knew sort of this two or three weeks, we saw it last week about the 60 minute mark, they really started to fatigue and we've just got to be really careful with them.

But if we can get through the international break, then once the midweek games start, we can start rotating a little bit and, you know, because we need them at the peak of their performance because when they're like that, they're outstanding footballers.

Was there anything wrong with Destiny Udogie when he came off?

No, he was a bit sore. He had sort of tightness, both hamstrings and calves, I think. Again, he was really fatigued last week as well, so trying to get as many match minutes into him as possible through this early period just to get his fitness up. I haven't spoken to the medical team but when I spoke to him, he just said he felt tired.

Were you worried when Micky van de Ven went down?

Yeah, I was worried, obviously but I'm worried about all of my boys mate. They're all special to me. You certainly don't want anything, particularly when it's something awkward like that. There's a real fear [in that moment] that it could be something but speaking to him, he handled it ok and he said he was fine after a couple of minutes. He is important to us but they're all important. That's why we've tried to create a squad where we're not going to just be putting him out there week after week.

Son wants to be a legend at this club, is it days like this that will get him there?

There's no sort of set criteria for that stuff. I’ve got no doubt that whenever he's done and dusted - and it's hopefully a long way down the track - he will be in esteemed company at this football club. But I love the fact that he's still motivated to do more. That's the key thing for us. He was really good today. It's the reason I put him in the middle because we know Jordan is a big part of their build up play, and they use him a lot. And Sonny's the best presser that we have in the front there, he’s unbelievable. I think he relished that role and again showed his threat when he went out on the left with that great finish.”

Bissouma hadn’t scored in 56 games - were you surprised by that goal, which was a rocket?

Yeah it was. No, I'm not surprised because like I said, there's no doubt in his ability, you know. He has that ability to do something special. But, you know, he needs to make sure that he does everything, as I said, he tries and endeavours to do everything right on and off the field to give him the platform to show who he could be as a footballer. We certainly believe in him, we’re certainly giving him an opportunity. But as I said before the game, that's just not a never-ending thread, at some point you need to cut it. And it's really up to him to keep going on.

You were frustrated on Monday by not taking chances, today the team was more efficient, is that ruthlessness going to be vital this season?

Not necessarily. I still think it’s about performance. I think if you perform like we have these first two weeks and you keep producing that multitude of chances, then more often than not, you'll win games of football. I still think it's the performance. I think once you start focusing just on the outcome, on goals… because even today, I thought, you know, we created some unbelievable opportunities and could have scored more goals. But the idea is that you keep your level of performance up.

And I think what you don't want to do is after last week, change your approach, looking for goals. We haven't changed our approach. We played the same way as last week. But I just felt today we had just a little bit more variety in our attacks. We went out wide, we went through central areas, we made some fantastic runs straight through the middle. I think Madders had a couple of one on one opportunities. I think that's part of it as well. If we can become a team that's not just a threat in one way, I think that’ll help us. Set pieces is another one. Cuti is unbelievable in the air, and we usually have some good delivery in there. All those kind of things help.”

Does it feel like you've got James Maddison back because he looked good today?

Yeah, I thought Madders was really good and again, really disciplined. It's not an easy game when you play against a team like Everton because you know there's not gonna be a hell of a lot of space in the front third. But you've also got to work defensively for second balls. I thought he was really good at doing that for us. He kind of mopped up a few times when they've gone long and, and kept the ball for us. He had a really good synergy with Wilson early on, they worked really well together. And then he made some great runs.

I think the key for me with Madders, a bit like Biss in a different angle, is if he's physically good, if he's feeling 100% physically, and he's fit and he's training every day, he can produce those kind of performances. It’s when that drops off a little bit that you see his performance… I think it affects him as well, you know, if he doesn't feel 100%. There's no doubt he's at that now that he's training every day. He trains hard every day. He's had a really strong preseason and I think that makes him feel like: you know what, I can go out there, and do the stuff I do.

Bissouma's classy gesture, Vicario's Spence moment

Description

Tottenham registered their first win of the Premier League season as they beat Everton 4-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Drawing at Leicester City in the opening game of the 2024/25 term, Ange Postecoglou made three changes to his Spurs team as Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert replaced Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr and Dominic Solanke.

Going close through Cristian Romero and James Maddison inside the opening few minutes of the contest, Spurs did open the scoring in the 14th minute as Bissouma found the net in style from the edge of the area. It was to get even better 11 minutes later as Son Heung-min doubled the tally after taking full advantage of Jordan Pickford dallying on the ball.

Everton did create a few openings after the break but it was Spurs who got the crucial next goal to secure all three points as Romero nodded home from Maddison's corner. Son then added his second of the contest in the closing stages after a remarkable piece of play from Micky van de Ven.

Here are five things we spotted in Saturday's game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Odobert decision

Odobert could only watch on earlier in the week as Tottenham started the Premier League season with a draw at Leicester. After receiving his work permit on Tuesday, the Frenchman came straight into Postecoglou's thinking for Saturday's encounter against Everton after impressing those behind the scenes at Hotspur Way.

Rather than ease him in by naming him on the bench, the Australian elected to start the youngster in the home game against the Toffees as he joined Son and Brennan Johnson in attack. Offering Spurs versatility as he can play right across the frontline, Odobert started for the Lilywhites on the left and was bright for the team early on with some good touches of the ball.

Odobert did give Everton debutant Roman Dixon plenty of issues due to his pace, trickery and footwork in what was a bright first showing in a Tottenham shirt. The new man certainly deserved his ovation when he made way for Richarlison in the 66th minute.

Kulusevski hint

Kulusevski was always expected to come back into the Tottenham team to face Everton after starting on the bench against Leicester. A standout player for Spurs in pre-season, Postecoglou went without the Swede in his XI at the King Power Stadium as Johnson and Maddison were preferred to him on the right wing and in midfield respectively.

Missing that technical player and someone who can create something out of nothing in the final third, Kulusevski was one of three changes to face Everton. Previously always lining up on the right flank for Spurs and only used as part of the midfield three on a couple of occasions when Spurs were missing players, the Stockholm-born player joined Maddison and the returning Bissouma in the middle of the park for Saturday's match.

Postecoglou decision very much highlights that he sees Kulusevski as a midfielder now rather than a winger. It was no surprise to see the 24-year-old have a key say on the game as he teed Bissouma up for the opener after some neat play in the Everton box.

Kulusevski delivered a strong performance and now he will be hoping he has done enough to keep his place in the side against Newcastle United next weekend.

Bissouma's apology and Postecoglou moment

Missing out at Leicester after the club imposed a ban on him due to his behaviour away from the pitch, Bissouma made the best possible return to the Tottenham XI by scoring the opening goal. Teed up on the edge of the area following some good work from Kulusevski, the midfielder found the back of the net with a thunderous strike that went in off the crossbar.

Running off to the corner of the south stand to celebrate the goal, Bissouma sent a message to those celebrating behind the goal once his teammates had left him. Making a heart with hands, the Mali international then put his hands together and bowed to the fans following his salute and it was clearly his way of apologising to them after letting down Postecoglou, the players and club's supporters after posting a video of himself on social media appearing to inhale laughing gas from a balloon.

On his way back to his own half, the player then made a beeline for Postecoglou and they both embraced following his strike. The goal was the perfect way for the player to mark his return to the team and also say sorry.

Van de Ven scare and assist

All Tottenham fans held their breath as Van de Ven went to the turf in agony shortly before the half-time whistle. Starting alongside Romero in defence as ever, the Dutchman appeared to have picked up a knee injury after competing for the ball with Dwight McNeil.

Trying to nick the ball off the Everton winger with his right foot, Van de Ven looked to have jarred his knee when he planted his foot back on the ground. The Netherlands international was in some discomfort and Tottenham's medical team were immediately rushed onto the pitch to attend to him.

Radu Dragusin duly went to warm up down the touchline and the Romanian was all set to replace his teammate after he was signalled to return to the dugout to get ready. However, Van de Ven managed to get back to his feet and was able to carry on for the remainder of the first half before then returning for the remaining 45 minutes.

Showing no signs of the earlier issue as he used his pace on a couple of occasions to really frustrate Everton, Van de Ven then turned provider for Son in the 77th minute as Tottenham made it four. Seizing upon McNeil's pass on the edge of the Tottenham area, the ex-Wolfsburg man went on a marauding run to Everton's 18-yard box before playing in the Spurs captain to finish off at the near post.

It was incredible play from the youngster and yet another example of just how talented a player he is.

Vicario's Spence moment

Djed Spence's Premier League minutes in a Tottenham shirt continue to increase after he replaced Destiny Udogie for the final 17 minutes of the Everton match. Previously not in Antonio Conte or Postecoglou's thinking, the right-back is quite clearly in the latter's plans right now and he is getting pitch time under his belt in the process after a very strong summer.

Four goals to the good and in total control, Spurs had an Everton attack to defend late on as they looked to play Jesper Lindstrom in on goal. Spence, however, had other ideas and he used his strength on the edge of the box to totally nullify the Dane and ensure that the ball ran through to Guglielmo Vicario.

Once the Italian had collected the ball in both hands, he turned to his right and went over to give his defender a high five for his impressive defending. Vicario certainly liked what he saw from Spence and duly let him know.

Tottenham took on Everton in the Premier League and came away with a 4-0 win and here are our Spurs player ratings from the match.

Ange Postecoglou made three changes to his Tottenham side against an Everton on Saturday afternoon with new £65million striker Dominic Solanke out with an ankle injury and Rodrigo Bentancur missing through the concussion protocol. Yves Bissouma came straight back into the team after his one-game suspension and Dejan Kulusevski lined up alongside him and James Maddison.

New signing Wilson Odobert made his debut on the left after receiving his work permit on Tuesday following his £30million move from Burnley, with Brennan Johnson on the right.

Bissouma gave the best possible apology to Postecoglou and his team-mates with a rocket of a shot in off the crossbar following excellent work from Kulusevski.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min, playing through the middle, doubled his side's tally after pressing high up and catching Jordon Pickford in possession. He sprinted all the way from the left flank to pick the keeper's pocket.

The third goal arrived with 20 minutes to go as Cristian Romero headed home on his 100th appearance for the club from Maddison's corner. Another followed not too long after when Micky van de Ven raced much of the length of the pitch before playing in Son who clinically fired through Pickford's legs into the net.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings after that comprehensive victory:

Guglielmo Vicario

Didn't have too much to do until he made a flying save to deny Lindstrom in the second half. Dealt well with those Everton set pieces that caused problems last season. 7

Pedro Porro

Defended really well down the right with a number of tackles and interceptions. 8

Cristian Romero

His 100th game and after an early misplaced pass he volleyed a shot at Pickford and then picked out Maddison with a great ball over the top. Took an elbow to the stomach in that first half but marked his milestone performance with a powerful header in off the crossbar with 20 minutes to go. 9

Micky van de Ven

Made a great headed interception to deny Calvert-Lewin in the 34th minute. Jarred his knee towards the end of the half which left him in a lot of pain but he kept going. It didn't seem to affect him as he made a string of great tackles before racing up the pitch in the second half and playing in Son to score his second. A superb display. 9

Destiny Udogie

A busy day up and down the left flank as well as getting infield plenty in that inverted role. 7

Dejan Kulusevski

Back in the team in midfield and he had a big part to play in the opening goal with his dribbling in the Everton final third and then teeing up Bissouma. A bright return to the team and has shown that he's a very good option as a member of that midfield three. 8

Yves Bissouma

Started his trust rebuilding with a rocket of a shot in off the crossbar for his first official goal for the club after his pre-season effort. Played well for much of the game before coming off in the second half. 8

James Maddison

A busy presence in the first half and teed up a couple of early chances for others and had one himself when put through by Romero. Curled a free-kick wide in the second half and then his corner was headed home by Romero in the second half. 8

Brennan Johnson

Worked hard but struggled to make an impact in the final third with the final pass or touch not going his way. 5

Son Heung-min

Led by example with his pressing all the way from the left flank before dispossessing Pickford to score. Earlier had set up Romero for a big chance. He then finished clinically through Pickford's legs for his second goal. 9

Wilson Odobert

His Tottenham debut started brightly with some great touches and ability to jink past opponents. Did give the ball away a couple of times, including one occasion which Vicario had to end up making a save from, but still a promising start. 7

Subs

Richarlison

Came on for some much-needed minutes up front and put himself about. 6

Pape Matar Sarr

Brought his mobility to the game in the second half. 6

Archie Gray

Came on for Bissouma and used the ball well. 6

Djed Spence

Brought on ahead of Davies in the left-back role and showed some good moments at both ends of the pitch, including one good bit of defending. 7

Lucas Bergvall

Came on for Maddison for the final 12 minutes to continue to increase his Premier League experience. N/A

Tottenham vs Everton highlights as Bissouma, Son and Romero goals seal big win for Postecoglou

Spurs are back at home, they absolutely dominated Leicester City in the first half on Monday. How many times have we seen it though when teams don't take their chances and get punished? That's exactly what happened.

Ange Postecoglou was understandably angry after the game, when Spurs had that much possession and that many chances, you just know the other team were going to have at least one chance. Jamie Vardy had another chance too and Guglielmo Vicario made a great save.

Spurs missed a chance right at the end as well, so you can understand why Postecoglou was angry.

It was pretty alarming how open Everton were after they conceded the first goal to Brighton, that is a big concern for me and I expect Spurs to take all three points, particularly as they’re playing at home.

Wilson Odobert debut as Bissouma and Kulusevski start

Ange Postecoglou has made three changes to the Tottenham Hotspur side that he believes can register its first win of the new Premier League season as they welcome Everton on Saturday afternoon.

Spurs open their home campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium having created enough opportunities in their opening match at Leicester City on Monday to win comfortably, but instead managed to come away with just a point following a poor second half at the King Power Stadium.

Following that match, Postecoglou lost new £65million striker Dominic Solanke to an ankle injury which has forced him to miss this match and Rodrigo Bentancur is out through the concussion protocol. Tottenham are taking it slowly with the Uruguayan anyway after his clash of heads.

Yves Bissouma comes straight back into the team after his one-game suspension and Dejan Kulusevski lines up alongside him and James Maddison.

Up front, Son Heung-min switches to the centre of attack with new signing Wilson Odobert making his debut on the left after receiving his work permit on Tuesday following his £30million move from Burnley, with Brennan Johnson on the right.

Here is the team Postecoglou has selected to face the Toffees:

Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Kulusevski, Bissouma, Maddison; Johnson, Son, Odobert. Subs: Forster, Dragusin, Spence, Davies, Gray, Sarr, Bergvall, Werner, Richarlison.

Pape Matar Sarr makes exciting Lucas Bergvall claim that Tottenham fans will love

Pape Matar Sarr believes that Tottenham ace Lucas Bergvall is "bound to be one of the world's top players" and that "he will get to the very top" if he puts in the work. Joining the Lilywhites from Swedish side Djurgarden at the beginning of February but only linking up with Ange Postecoglou's Spurs side in July, the midfielder has made an instant impression for his new club.

The 18-year-old wowed for Tottenham on their pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea and he made his Premier League debut off the substitutes' bench in last Monday's 1-1 draw with Leicester City. Going on the assured performances he has delivered so far, some supporters have called for Postecoglou to name the Stockholm-born player in his Tottenham starting XI.

It is not only Spurs supporters who Bergvall has so far managed to wow, with the teenager making a big impression on his new teammates. Sarr is one of those who has been dazzled by the new signing and he is confident that Tottenham's No.15 can work his way right to the top.

“Lucas. I really love his style. He’s never under pressure when he’s on the ball. Technically, he’s fantastic," said the midfielder in an exclusive interview with The Sun when asked about the talent in the Tottenham team right now. "He’s bound to be one of the world’s top players. He’s got all the assets. With work, he will get to the very top.”

Postecoglou is currently building a very young team in N17 as he looks to guide Tottenham to some much-needed silverware. Bergvall is not the only teenager to secure a move to Spurs for the 2024/25 campaign as Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Yang Min-hyeok have also signed on the dotted line.

Maybe opting for youth rather than experience in this summer's transfer market, Sarr believes that age is not a factor as the players are quite clearly good enough.

“The way I see it, there are no 17-year-olds, no 20-year-olds," said the Senegal international. "When I look at football, all footballers are the same.

“It’s not just certain teams that can win, it’s the team that has the talent, who works hard, that has the skill. If you have that, regardless of whether you have young players or old players, that’s going to be the team that wins.

“There are a lot of young players at Tottenham and I guess I’m a little bit older than them so I try to help in my own way, I try to impart the experience that I’ve got.”

Next Tottenham transfer at final stages as medical set for today

Manor Solomon is reportedly closing in on a move away from Tottenham Hotspur before the transfer window closes.

Solomon has spent the majority of his career with Spurs recovering from a knee injury he suffered in October last year.

The forward signed for Tottenham last summer on a free transfer but has made just six appearances for the club.

After undergoing surgery on his meniscus in his knee back in March, Solomon has gradually been stepping up his recovery.

Now it seems the forward is edging closer to a move away from North London. According to Fabrizio Romano, Solomon is close to completing a move to Leeds United before the window closes. English clubs have until next Friday to finish their transfer business for the summer.

It was also reported by journalist Paul O Keefe that the deal that will take Solomon to Leeds will be a loan until the end of the season. Spurs and Leeds are thought to be in the final stages of talks over a deal, with Solomon potentially set to have a medical on Saturday.

Back in June, Solomon posted a video on social media which showed he was nearing a return to fitness. The Israel international was spotted in a training session where he dribbled past a mannequin before shooting the ball into an empty net.

Spurs have added four new signings to their squad this summer with Dominic Solanke, Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With Solanke, Bergvall and Odobert's arrivals, in particular, it was always going to be difficult for Solomon to achieve regular game time once he returns to full fitness, something which he will hope to achieve should a loan move to Leeds be completed.

We simulated Tottenham vs Everton to get a score prediction for Premier League clash

Tottenham will be hoping to get their first win of their 2024/25 Premier League campaign this weekend, as they welcome Everton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

After a strong start in their opening game against Leicester City, Spurs eventually had to settle for a 1-1 draw after a topsy turvy second-half display, with Ange Postecoglu's men guilty of missing several changes in the first 45 minutes. Ahead of the first Premier League home game of the season, Spurs are likely to name a similar lineup, albeit without midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, who sustained a horrible head injury at the King Power Stadium.

Can Tottenham get off to a winning start in the Premier League? Let's take a look.

We simulated Tottenham vs Everton to get a score prediction

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 24 and updated the squads with the latest injuries and suspensions, however as we're still using EA FC 24, the kits and squad numbers may not be accurate.

We predict that Spurs could line up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Gray, Maddison; Son, Solanke, Kulusevski.

We predict that Everton could set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Pickford; Holgate, Keane, Tarkowski, Mykolenko; Gueye, Iroegbunam; Harrison, Doucoure, McNeil; Calvert-Lewin.

Just like in their previous game, Tottenham had a superb start to this game, with the home side dominating possession and creating several good chances. They eventually made the breakthrough on the 20-minute mark, with James Maddison creating a yard for himself just inside the area, before bending a shot into the far corner.

But once again Spurs were unable to add to their lead before half-time, despite being well on top, and once again, their opposition were able to grab an equaliser shortly after the break, with Calvert-Lewin scoring a tap-in after a smart cutback from Dwight McNeil. This time, however, Tottenham reacted well to the away side's goal and made it 2-1 15 minutes before the end.

After a neat passing move, the ball eventually fell to the feet of Son Heung-min. But the defender got a toe to the ball and it ended up bobbling between the two players, but Son took the initiative with a clever toe-poke through the defender's legs which flew into the near post from close range.

EA FC 24 predicts a Tottenham home win this weekend, but only just, with Spurs guilty of missing chances when dominating the game once again.

EA FC 24 predicted final score: Tottenham 2-1 Everton
