breaking goal as player returns from injury

It will be a quiet weekend for Robert Vilahamn and his Tottenham Hotspur Women side with no game pencilled in on the calendar. The FA Cup returns this weekend and unfortunately Spurs are already out of the competition after losing at Everton back in January.

The club will have plenty of time to work on the training pitch, however, and they will be doing all they can to return to winning ways against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, March 16. Vilahamn's side have lost their last four games in all competitions and a win is really needed as we approach the business end of the season.

Spurs did lose 2-1 against Manchester City last Sunday but the boss and players could take plenty from the game despite falling to another defeat. There's more on that and plenty of other things to come out of N17 over the past few days which can be viewed below in football.london's latest Tottenham Hotspur Women round-up.

Injury boost

There was some good news to emerge from Hotspur Way this week as Vilahamn was handed a boost on the injury front. Kit Graham was back on the grass for the first time since suffering an ACL injury during the team's pre-season preparations back in August.

Spending time behind the scenes putting in the hours in hope of returning to full fitness, Graham took to the turf to do a number of laps before heading back inside. Once back in the building, she was given a guard of honour by all her teammates and applauded after taking such a big step in her recovery.

It was a great moment for the player and all connected with the club will be hoping she can return to match action in the not too distant future.

England proud of Tottenham team

Tottenham may have lost against Manchester City 2-1 on Sunday but Bethany England was very proud of the performance the team put in at Brisbane Road. Trailing 1-0 to Vivianne Miedema's goal after 11 minutes, England restored parity later in the first half before Aoba Fujino won it for City 12 minutes from the end.

Despite the frustration of losing late on, England believes the team have now set a level they need to replicate week in, week out.

“Even though we lost, I can stand here, hand on heart, and say how proud of the performance we put in," she said in an interview with Tottenham's official website. “I thought we took the game to City and had so many chances, granted we should have taken them, myself included at the very end, but that’s the level I expect from the team now, the standard, the defensive discipline, the aggressiveness, the first to second balls.

“Obviously it’s disheartening as we don’t want to keep dropping points and we know they’re such a good side, but I felt like we really matched them, so I think that’s the most disappointing thing that we came away short when we could have got something out of the game.”

England in the history books

England's goal against Manchester City proved to be a memorable one for the Tottenham player despite the team falling to defeat. The 30-year-old is now in the Women's Super League history books for her heroics in front of goal.

England's latest strike now means that she is the first player to score 25+ goals for two different teams in the Women's Super League.

Upcoming work

Vilahamn's side will be watching on this weekend as Tottenham do not have a game. The FA Cup returns this weekend and we are now at the quarter-final stage, with Spurs exiting the competition in the fourth round at the end of January.

Despite not having a game, the break in play for Tottenham will give the head coach and his players plenty of time to get to work on the training pitch.

Speaking to Tottenham's official website, he said: “I think it’s going to be two weeks where we can work with the whole squad together, in and out of possession, we want to go into that Brighton game with the fans and make sure we score a lot of goals and start winning games again because we have lost a few in a row against top teams, but it’s now to take the next step.”

What will also help Tottenham in their upcoming games, with a home encounter against Brighton & Hove Albion next on the calendar, is the return of some of the players.

“It’s a big thing," outlined Vilahamn. "The squad we have now and what we want to do with that, we needed competition, the players stepping up and they did that today. Charli [Grant] playing in a new role and did excellent as well, Luana [Buhler] coming in, I think many players showed great quality they have, and for us to develop and close that gap, to compete, we need that.”

Ange Postecoglou has made two changes to his Tottenham side to face AZ in Alkmaar in the Europa League round of 16 first leg on Thursday evening.

The Spurs boss has got Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke all back from injury and available for this game even though he lost Dejan Kulusevski to a foot injury which will keep him out until after the international break. All three returnees are on a very strong bench to be used during the encounter in the Netherlands.

Postecoglou continues with Mathys Tel up front with Brennan Johnson and Son Heung-min on either side and the midfield remains as Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison. Djed Spence comes in for Pedro Porro at right-back with Destiny Udogie playing again down the left while Kevin Danso and Archie Gray play together again in the centre of defence.

Here's the team that Postecoglou has selected on Thursday evening:

Tottenham Hotspur send quadruple team news hint ahead of AZ Alkmaar clash

It’s Europa League knockout action for Tottenham Hotspur as they take on AZ Alkmaar at the AZ Stadion in the first leg of their round of 16 clash this evening (Thursday, 5.45pm kick-off).

The competition is Spurs’ last chance of silverware this season, with it so far being a campaign of disappointment. The last few weeks have seen them fall out of both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup in the semi-final and fourth round stages, respectively.

With Spurs sitting in 13th place in the Premier League table, concentration may go on to the Europa League. Success in the tournament would see them qualify for the Champions League next season.

First, they must get through the first knockout match against Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. The second leg will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next week, with Spurs looking to take an advantage into that game.

Ahead of the match, there have been some hints as to who could be selected by Ange Postecoglou. The club have shared a pre-match graphic on social media, including James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso.

All five started the last Premier League game against Manchester City, which Spurs lost 1-0. Their inclusion on the graphic hints that they will somehow be involved against AZ Alkmaar.

The graphic has been shared by Maddison onto his own Instagram story. Both Tel and Danso have also shared their own pre-match graphic to their stories ahead of the game, giving further indication of their involvement.

Tottenham Hotspur's £18m transfer reality a huge boost for Ange Postecoglou's summer plans

It's been a season to forget for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur so far this season with Spurs out of the FA Cup, League Cup and in the bottom half of the Premier League.

The Europa League remains the only chance of silverware this season for Postecoglou to win, continuing his trend of winning silverware in his second year at clubs he's managed.

Spurs are among the favourites to win the trophy come the end of the season and take on Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar later this evening. They'll come up against former academy striker Troy Parrott who has made an impressive impact since his move to the Netherlands.

However, in North London, Spurs have struggled with key players missing large parts of the season through injury with a defensive crisis crippling their start to the campaign.

Archie Gray was forced to play in an unorthodox centre-back position, but the youngster has been one of few positives this season. One eye is on the summer transfer market and Spurs will be keen to bolster their squad in order to avoid a repeat of this season's disappointment.

That being said, they may have already conducted a shrewd piece of business ahead of the 2025/26 season. Central defender Luka Vuskovic agreed a deal to sign for Spurs back in September 2023, joining the club from the summer of 2025.

Daniel Levy's side agreed a reported £12million deal for the highly rated Croatian centre-back, joining the club from Hajduk Split, in a deal that will run until 2030. The defender spent last season on loan with Polish side Radomiak Radom before linking up with Belgian outfit K.V.C Westerlo in the summer of 2024.

In 25 appearances for the Belgian Pro League outfit, Vuskovic has scored an impressive seven goals from the heart of defence and attracted plenty of praise this season.

In a recent report carried out by CIES Football Observatory looking into the rising values of talents outside of Europe's top-five leagues over the last six months, Vuskovic is near the top of the list. The 18-year-old is 12th out of the top-100 for how much his value has risen in that time.

Valued at €21.6m (£18m), the youngsters value has increased by a whopping €18.3m (£15.34m) in that time, highlighting his impressive displays. His next step may not have been discussed yet, but the signs are promising for the young defender.

“I had barely played ten games for Hajduk. In the meantime, I have already gained some experience,” he said on his Tottenham transfer, as reported by Voetbalkrant.

“Without being arrogant, I can say that I have shown sufficient qualities. Maybe I still have to work on my speed a bit more, although Mats Hummels shows that you can make a difference even without that speed.

“If I have made my debut at Tottenham, it will be fine. Is there a chance that I will stay at Westerlo? That has not been discussed yet.”

Tottenham add new player to Ange Postecoglou's Europa League squad for AZ Alkmaar round of 16 tie

Description

It is a big night for Tottenham as they look to seize the initiative in the first leg of their Europa League round of 16 tie against AZ Alkmaar. Although the sides did face each other in the league phase of UEFA's second club competition back in October, they were again paired together in the last 16 draw that took place in February.

Ange Postecoglou's playing squad is certainly looking healthy for the game at AFAS Stadion as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke have been included after their recent time on the sidelines due to injury. Ben Davies, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison miss out through injury, though.

Another three Tottenham players could be in line to make their first appearance for the club in European competition this season. Having progressed through to the knockout phase of the competition, UEFA rules allow clubs to make a maximum of three changes to their playing squad following the completion of the league phase.

Djed Spence comes into the Tottenham squad following his previous omission and January additions Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel are also included. Fraser Forster, Radu Dragusin and Timo Werner were the unlucky trio to be cut, with Antonin Kinsky also missing out following his move from Slavia Prague at the turn of the year.

In addition to their main list, clubs involved in UEFA competition also have a B list which increases the options available to a manager on a game day. Club-trained players who were born on or after January 1, 2003 are allowed to be considered for selection but they must have been with Tottenham for an uninterrupted period of a minimum of two years to be eligible.

Europa League participants are allowed to register an unlimited amount of players on the B list during the campaign, with the necessary paperwork having to be completed no later than midnight (CET) on the day before a game. With Tottenham returning to European action on Thursday evening away at AZ Alkmaar, Spurs have added young goalkeeper Aaron Maguire to their playing roster.

The 20-year-old, who has featured in 10 Premier League 2 games this season, was spotted boarding the plane to the Netherlands on Wednesday afternoon and he will help provide cover for Guglielmo Vicario, Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman. The academy player takes the place of Luca Gunter, who is currently on loan in the National League with Wealdstone.

Alfie Dorrington and Will Lankshear are also no longer part of Tottenham's squad after joining Aberdeen and West Brom respectively in January. Other players that feature on Tottenham's B list include Dane Scarlett, Mikey Moore, Damola Ajayi and Luca Williams-Barnett.

As per UEFA's official website, here is what Tottenham's squad currently looks like for the Europa League knockout phase:

Goalkeepers: Vicario, Austin, Whiteman, Maguire*.

Defenders: Danso, Udogie, Romero, Porro, Spence, Davies, Van de Ven, Cassanova*, King*, Hardy*.

Midfielders: Son, Bissouma, Maddison, Gray, Bergvall, Kulusevski, Johnson, Odobert, Sarr, Bentancur, Moore*, Hall*, Kyerematen*, Olusesi*.

Attackers: Richarlison, Tel, Solanke, Scarlett*, Ajayi*, Williams-Barnett*.

*B list.

Paul Merson names four Europa League favourites as 'dangerous' Tottenham verdict given

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Paul Merson believes that Tottenham are one of the four favourites to win the Europa League, as Ange Postecoglou's side prepare to take on AZ Alkmaar in the round of 16 first leg.

Tottenham finished fourth in the new league phase format after winning five and drawing two of their eight matches. That meant that Spurs booked an automatic place for the last 16 and avoided a two-legged play-off tie in February - something that could have been disastrous considering their injury situation.

After the eight play-off ties concluded, Tottenham were drawn up against AZ, who beat Galatasaray to reach this stage of the competition, in the round of 16. Spurs have already played AZ once this season, having beaten their Dutch opponents 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the league phase.

And Merson feels that Spurs are going to have enough to progress past AZ and go far in the competition, with Postecoglou's men labelled as one of the four favourites to win the Europa League.

Speaking ahead of Spurs' trip to Alkmaar, Merson told Sky Sports: "If you look at the Europa League, Tottenham, Lyon, Athletic Bilbao and Lazio are the four teams to win it.

"Tottenham have got a chance if they can get their players fit but they've got to get through AZ Alkmaar. Tottenham are a team where you've just got to make sure you're not out of it.

"I watched AZ Alkmaar the other week at Galatasaray in the second leg – they've got some pace up front and they were electric up front. They blew Galatasaray away and Galatasaray were fortunate to get a 2-2 draw.

"I don't know how Tottenham will live with them at their ground because it's a big old pitch. It's a dangerous game, but over two legs I'd expect Tottenham to go through.

Jose Mourinho responds to Tottenham 'revenge' claim as possible Europa League reunion date set

Jose Mourinho has played down the possibility of gaining "revenge" against Tottenham should his Fenerbahce side face them in the Europa League final.

Former Spurs boss Mourinho is eyeing up his FIFTH piece of major European silverware with Fenerbahce in round of 16 action against Rangers on Thursday night.

Should Fenerbahce progress past the Scottish side, Mourinho could be set for a tour of his ex-employers with Roma their next opponents if they beat Athletic Bilbao.

Fenerbahce's route to May's final in Bilbao could see them face Manchester United in the semi-final and then Tottenham in the final on May 20/21 if those teams progress to that stage.

It would see Mourinho face three of his former clubs and give him the chance to gain "revenge" on them - but the 62-year-old doesn't see it like that and believes he remembers the good times instead.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Mourinho said: "In my mind, I never feel about revenge. I never have that feeling because when I leave a club, I prefer to remember my good times at the club."

Fenerbahce boss Mourinho has endured a difficult time of recent late after Galatasaray accused him of racism following a goalless draw between the two last month.

In his post-match press conference, the Portuguese said that the Galatasaray bench were "jumping around like monkeys" following an early tackle.

He also praised the decision to bring in Slovenian official Slavko Vincic to officiate the game and believes it would have been a disaster if the fixture was officiated by a Turkish referee.

Galatasaray said last Tuesday that they intend to take legal action against Mourinho. A statement read: "Since the commencement of his managerial duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people.

"Today, his discourse has escalated beyond merely immoral comments into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric. We hereby formally declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings concerning the racist statements made by Jose Mourinho, and shall accordingly submit official complaints to UEFA and FIFA.

"Furthermore, we shall diligently observe the stance adopted by Fenerbahce - an institution professing to uphold 'exemplary moral values' - in response to the reprehensible conduct exhibited by their manager."

The statement was posted on the Galatasaray club website under the headline: "Say no to racism."

But now, Fenerbahce hit back and say they will be seeking damages as the club accused Galatasaray of attacking Mourinho's "personal rights".

"We would like to announce to the public that a lawsuit for non-pecuniary damages of 1 million 907 thousand Turkish Liras has been filed against Galatasaray Sports Club by Fenerbahce Sports Club lawyers due to the attack on the personal rights of our manager Jose Mourinho," a Fenerbahce statement read.

Ange Postecoglou's unusual decision, careful Cristian Romero and what Mikey Moore did to Bergvall

Description

Ange Postecoglou was not about to let anything slide as he got into his press conference inside the AFAS Stadion.

There was no warning that the Australian was going to be a tricky customer on this occasion. His pre-match press conferences at Spurs rarely play out that way, they're normally quite enjoyable and thought-provoking for most of those involved. It's more his post-match interactions, which he admits are tinged with emotion, that can get spiky especially for the TV and radio interviewers who get him first before he comes into the press conference room.

At the end of this pleasant sunny day in Alkmaar, it had started normally enough. Postecoglou's answers to football.london about team news and whether Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke were ready to start this Europa League match after returning from injury were normal enough.

Postecoglou spoke about the new foot injury for Dejan Kulusevski, which will keep him out until after the international break, and was a bit vague on the three returnees but that's to be expected when it comes to team selection ahead of a big game. Few managers are keen on letting the opposition know exactly what's coming.

It was a question about Romero being named in the preliminary squad for Argentina's upcoming World Cup qualifiers, despite having not played since December, that Postecoglou first got slightly irked by.

A section of the Tottenham fanbase have long claimed that the centre-back often ensures he's fit for international duty more so than for his club. Romero passionately hit back at that suggestion a couple of summers ago and perhaps Postecoglou, in trying to head off the question leading in that direction, was quickly dismissive of the whole thing.

He gave a big sigh before saying: "It’s interesting, I've been in game for 26 years, including as a national coach and one rule we know is don’t have any control over international football. Everyone knows that, I don't know why it becomes a question every time. Even if he's injured, they can call him up. So from our perspective, it's not of our concern.

"Our concern is to get him up and running and hopefully get him some game time. If he's fit should go and get more game time rather than not playing for two weeks. The international side of it, people have asked me a couple of times over the last couple of days and it's almost like they're not really sure. International football is pretty, clubs don't have any control on where they're players go."

"But you could have a view on whether he should play?" came the response. The Australian shot back: "What's the point in that?" The answer was "Because you want to protect him?".

"OK, but if I express that, it doesn’t change anything," said the Spurs boss. "And at the end of the day, if he’s fit, then him getting some games is good for us because he’s missed a lot of football. We can’t dictate to players whether they should go with their national teams or not. I never have and that’s been my view my whole career and I won’t stop now."

Next came a little retort over not knowing what "fit fit" meant in a question about Van de Ven. It was likely to do with the fact that the young Dutchman hasn't been injured but has been shifting his body mechanics to prevent him from feeling discomfort with the sprints he loves to do. So he's been fit before, but not fit to play. So not "fit fit".

Then came a question about Yves Bissouma. The Tottenham players were given Sunday and Monday off this week, in keeping with the couple of days off Postecoglou gave them in the weeks ahead of the games against Manchester United and Ipswich. Some remained at home in the UK with their families while others took the chance to get away for 48 hours.

Of those heading abroad for a short break, Bissouma decided to head off to colder climes, with an Instagram Story post on Sunday showing him enjoying a meal at a snow-covered ski resort in Courchevel, located in the French Alps. There's nothing wrong with that of course, enjoying a meal in a cold location.

Then Bissouma put up another post, showing him wearing various garments for skiing or snowboarding, albeit - and crucially - with any visible snowboards far behind him in a fenced off area.

There's no indication that the midfielder was taking part in such activities, but obviously in a year in which he's fallen foul of club rules and got himself suspended, it might not have been the best idea to advertise his trip to a place where such things are commonplace and presumably his family and friends would have taken part.

For players aren't allowed to take part in extreme sports as part of their contracts. Hugo Lloris admitted in his recent book that during his time at Tottenham when he was on holiday with his children in the mountains that "I always promise myself not to ski, in accordance with my contracts, but it's not easy to keep your promises".

The former Tottenham captain then went into a story about a fractured wrist in the summer of 2015 that came about because of a quad bike accident on holiday in Ibiza. He admitted he only told Mauricio Pochettino a week after the initial injury because the diagnosis changed from nothing broken, to the discovered fracture. It's fair to say the Argentine was not impressed, although Lloris only ended up missing the opening game of the season against Manchester United, the team he was being heavily linked with at the time.

So to ask about Bissouma was not an outlandish question and it was one that, along with the Romero question, Postecoglou would have been fully briefed was coming by his press officer.

The wording of the question perhaps did not help, phrased gently by the reporter to begin with but ultimately mixing the intention of it, asking: "Yves Bissouma was at a ski resort earlier this week, so presumably you gave them a couple of days off?".

Postecoglou laughed before saying: "Seriously, what sort of question is that? No I didn’t, we were training but he decided to go skiing… come on mate, you’re better than that!"

So what was Postecoglou's view on it if Bissouma did go skiing or snowboarding? The original intention of the subject being raised.

"I don’t worry about those things, mate. They’re adults, they’re human beings, they had a couple of days off, they can choose to use that time as wisely as they can to help them be ready for what’s in store for us," he said. "You kind of hope that they’re sensible about these things and go about whatever they do in a manner that befits the position they hold, but I have no concerns and he’s fine."

You could try to delve between the lines of that with words like "wisely" and "sensible" but ultimately all is fine and as stated above there's no evidence to suggest that Bissouma did take part in any such activities.

Even the next question about the Europa League brought a slightly needless start to the retort from the Tottenham boss.

"This competition feels good for Spurs and has been in the past, do you feel like it's there for you?" asked another reporter.

Postecoglou responded: "I'm not sure what 'there for me' is, but it's a competition we obviously want to do well in."

The Australian went into a longer answer for the journalist, but it's little things like that that get picked up by his critics and for all the amusing or fascinating soundbites the 59-year-old produces most weeks, he's also starting to get noticed for the little snarky remarks like that.

As stated above, he would have been well briefed on the subjects that would have come up, so had decided beforehand that his approach to them would have been what he came out with on the day.

It's an unusual decision, especially for a head coach who now has most of his injured players back and is relying on results turning significantly in the Premier League and with a strong run now in the Europa League. There is a danger in alienating certain sections of the media but perhaps that's something that does not concern him at this point or ever has.

It has to be said for any manager that it must be difficult to face interviews and press conferences each week when many questions will be repetitive because they've been asked by those who were not in the previous press conference but they all want the same answer.

There is also an element of reporters trying to find out information that needs to remain in-house or questions that are constructed to deliberately provoke a response.

None of the questions put to him on Wednesday evening particularly felt like that but Postecoglou may well have just been trying to side with his players.

Kevin Danso's demeanour was very different in the following press conference. The 26-year-old Austria international has quickly become a popular player behind the scenes at Tottenham and it's easy to see why. He's a constantly smiling, engaging chap with a life that shows battles along the way and it's clear that he's loving the fact that he's pulled himself up to this part of his career.

When asked about battling with Romero and Van de Ven being part of the attraction of joining Spurs, he replied without hesitation: "100%. I've always had to compete in my life, and I thrive off that challenge, playing alongside great players, competing for places with great players, and just being at an amazing club whose ambition is to win things and just to be part of the history of a club like Tottenham."

One to look out for, or listen out for, is that Danso has a remarkably similar voice to Eric Dier - perhaps a mixed accent born of having spent a chunk of his childhood in England but also elsewhere across Europe during his formative years and then adult life.

football.london put it to Danso that when they mentioned to Postecoglou a couple of weeks back that the centre-back seemed to get whacked, get straight back up and limp around for a while still trying to defend until his body moved freely again, the Spurs boss had suggested that he thought Danso "enjoyed the whacks".

The defender laughed and said: "I like to think of myself as a warrior, just try to get my body in front of shots, block shots, just be an aggressive defender who's always trying to get in the way of stuff, stop the opposition from scoring, and getting whacks is part and parcel of that, but like you said, I just get up, limp a bit and continue."

Danso was also a very good rugby player as a child after moving to Milton Keynes from six onwards and in an alternate universe his career might have gone that way. So could that rugby element be a part of his battling pitch persona?

"Probably, that and growing up with two brothers, always getting whacks from them, but like I said, I enjoy it, it's part of football, everybody gets a kick here and there, you just have to get up and keep going," he explained.

It was a confident press conference and before the Spurs defender and his head coach had come into the room inside the stadium, there had been another confident display from Troy Parrott.

The former Spurs striker spoke in England earlier in the tournament before the previous game against AZ and back then his answers were short and sharp. On this occasion, with the confidence that 17 goals this season brings, the 23-year-old Irishman was in good form and gave honest answers about leaving the north London club.

"I look back with a smile. It's a place where I grew up. I moved away from home quite young so when I went there I was in a phase of going from a kid to a teenager and then past that. It was always good for him. It helped me because the person and player I am now so I can only look back on that with good memories," he said.

"You could say that [they didn't see the best of me] but I think it was just the right time for both of us to move on. When I look back, that's not what I think. I just think about the good times I had growing up there now I'm here."

He added: "No [regrets], definitely not. For me it just didn’t happen. I’m OK with that. I’m here, I’m really enjoying myself here, I love life over here. Now I’m just focusing on where I am right now and trying to progress and keep getting better here.

"No, I never had a conversation [with Postecoglou about staying]. For me, I was ready to move on and I think the club were also ready to move on. I thought it was the perfect time to do so. That’s just the way it went and I’m here now.

football.london asked Parrott what he made of Tottenham now, struggling in the bottom half of the table after having spent most of his time at the club in the upper reaches of the Premier League.

"I'm sure it's disappointing for everyone there. When I was there, the focus was always the top four and being at the top of the table," he said. "I think looking from the outside, because I'm not in there anymore, it looks like there's a disappointment there. They're not doing as well as they want to. It seems like a difficult time for them. I'm just trying to focus on my team and what we have to do tomorrow to try to get a result."

The media got to see the first 15 minutes of Tottenham training out on the AFAS Stadion pitch before the club's media officers descended to bring a close to such proceedings, in order to keep within UEFA's rules and regulations.

What could be seen during that period were the usual warm-up drills, with the players paired up to go through their stretches. That brought the amusing sight of Mikey Moore - so good against AZ last time out - pushing and joking with Lucas Bergvall as the two teenagers began their preparations in high spirit ahead of the big game.

For most of us, our teenage years were spent at school or in far more frivolous activities around it. For this 17-year-old and 19-year-old, not to mention the other teenagers like Archie Gray and Mathys Tel, they are preparing in the Netherlands for a huge Europa League game in which they could be called upon to perform in front of thousands and a watching TV audience. Yet here they were laughing and joking, enjoying it all and taking it all in their stride.

The Alkmaar pitch was a little bit cut up, likely because AZ had trained on it for an hour before Spurs got their turn on there, so it should be in a better condition for the game itself.

What was most noticeable was the sheer number of senior Tottenham bodies now in training, something that has not been seen for a long time, with academy players often making up the numbers during the injury crisis. Even Timo Werner and Antonin Kinsky, not registered for this competition, were brought along to train with Sunday's game against Bournemouth also in mind.

Romero, Van de Ven and Solanke could all be seen taking a part in the rondos although it was noticeable that in this part of training it was a calmer, more cautious version of Romero, who was presumably leaving it all for the pitch tomorrow. Even in warm-up rondos, the Argentine has been seen by the media launching into sliding tackles in the past but this was a reserved version of the vice-captain.

After that, before the media were ushered away, Postecoglou split the team into group for various attacking drills across the pitch with that classic winger getting the ball into the six-yard box move that we've seen hundreds of times this season. There was not much to be taken from them in terms of team selection as they looked to be mix and match, with a front line of Son Heung-min, Mathys Tel and James Maddison at one point with Bergvall racing in behind them and in another group Moore and Solanke in the attacking areas and Dane Scarlett playing in a deeper role in midfield.

Postecoglou took a central organisational role amidst it all, as he often does on the day before matches - MD-1 as it's called within clubs - and he could be seen shouting instructions and trying to get the movement right among the players.

It needs to be right for Tottenham on Thursday night in what will be a tough game against an AZ side starting to find their feet this season, albeit in the midst of a little run of games in quick succession. Spurs and Postecoglou know what that's all about but for once they are the team with the extra rest and freshness. They need to make that count and kickstart their season.
