Tottenham shirt numbers available to Lucas Bergvall after Archie Gray decision for 2024/25 season - Football.London
Description

Lucas Bergvall will soon link up with his new Tottenham teammates for the very first time. Ange Postecoglou's squad are expected to begin to start filtering back to the club's Hotspur Way training base from Saturday, July 6 onwards for pre-season work.

Players will return at various points due to a few having international commitments at the beginning of June, with some still involved at either Euro 2024 or the Copa America and not due to return until later in the pre-season campaign. Bergvall's first day at Hotspur Way has been a long time coming, especially after officially signing for the club at the start of February on a contract until the summer of 2029.

Fellow new arrival Archie Gray will also meet the rest of the Spurs squad for the first time later this week after completing his move from Leeds United on Tuesday morning. The versatile player has signed a long-term contract in north London until the end of the 2029/30 campaign.

Following the confirmation of the 18-year-old's transfer to Tottenham, the club also revealed that the player has taken on the No.14 shirt for the 2024/25 campaign. Gray inherits the number from Ivan Perisic, who departed Spurs to rejoin Hajduk Split initially on a loan deal back in January.

Whereas Gray's squad number is confirmed ahead of the new term, Tottenham supporters are still waiting to find out what number Bergvall will be wearing. The teenager did wear No.21 at Djurgarden but that number is currently occupied by fellow countryman Dejan Kulusevski.

So what are the vacant shirt numbers as things stand and what could soon become available as Bergvall makes his pick? football.london takes a look below.

Available

No.1 - Certainly not a number for Bergvall, the No.1 shirt is now available after Hugo Lloris' move to LAFC

No.2 - The No.2 shirt has been vacant since January 2023 after Matt Doherty's contract was mutually terminated so he could join Spanish giants Atletico Madrid.

No.15 - No.15 is available for the first time since 2014 after Eric Dier headed for Bayern Munich in January.

No.19 - Ryan Sessegnon's departure means that No.19 is up for grabs. Bergvall has previously worn the number on Sweden Under-21 duty.

No.25 - No.25 has become available after Japhet Tanganga bid farewell to Tottenham at the end of his contract.

No.26 - No.26 appears to be retired in all-but-name with no player wearing the number since Ledley King called time on his career 12 years ago.

No.28 - The shirt is now vacant after Tanguy Ndombele's time at the club finally came to an end.

Other vacant numbers (1-40): 31, 32, 34 and 39.

The shirts that could soon become available

No.3 - Sergio Reguilon was allowed to depart on loan last season as he was not in Postecoglou's plans and another exit looks likely.

No.4 - There are question marks over Oliver Skipp heading into the new season with so many options ahead of him in the midfield pecking order at Tottenham.

No.5 - Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will very likely depart this summer to get regular first-team football elsewhere.

No.11 - Bryan Gil needs to depart for the sake of his career this summer with the Spaniard just not getting the consistent minutes he requires in north London.

No.12 - AC Milan have been heavily linked with a move for Emerson Royal this summer and a transfer away from Tottenham may well come to fruition.

No.18 - Giovani Lo Celso is another player who also needs to head off due to having a bit-part role under Postecoglou at Tottenham.

No.24 - Djed Spence is not in Postecoglou's long-term thinking and Spurs shouldn't be short on options for the right-sided player after a good loan spell in Italy with Genoa.

No.27 - Manor Solomon's future is up in the air after barely featuring for the Lilywhites last season due to injury.

Cristian Romero Argentina decision made ahead of the Olympics and what it means for Tottenham - Football.London
Description

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is not part of Argentina's squad for the Olympic Games taking place in Paris this summer. Question marks surrounded the defender's potential involvement in the competition after he admitted back in March that he would love to represent his country at the Olympics.

“I never had the chance to be in the Olympic Games and I would love to,” explained the centre-back (via London Evening Standard). “Obviously, it doesn’t depend on me, but if you want to take me I am available for the Argentine national team.

“I continue with the same enthusiasm and desire as always to continue doing things well at the club to continue having the possibility of being here.”

As the highly-rated Tottenham centre-back is currently playing for his country in the Copa America in the United States, his potential participation at the Olympics would have left Ange Postecoglou without his man for a period of time ahead of the new Premier League season. The group stage of the men's football at the summer games commences on Wednesday, July 24 and the final is due to be played on Friday, August 9, thus meaning Romero would miss the entirety of Spurs' pre-season fixtures had he participated in the competition and Argentina progressed to the final.

Confirmation of Javier Mascherano's Argentina squad for the Olympics arrived on Tuesday evening, with Romero not one of the 18 players selected. The former midfielder has included some notable names in his squad, including Nicolas Otamendi and Manchester City's Julian Alvarez.

Following Romero's comments earlier in the year about the Olympics, Postecoglou was asked about potentially losing the World Cup winner ahead of the season when speaking in his pre-match press conference prior to the Luton Town game.

"Yeah, look with all those things. Olympics is a little bit of a different issue because club's aren't obliged to let players go to the Olympics," explained the 58-year-old. "From that perspective, we have a little bit more of a say in it than other internationals.

"Certainly from our behalf as a club, we'll always be looking at making sure there is a balance there. He hasn't spoken to me about it, no one has spoken to me about it but I guess pretty strong advice would be with the Copa America at the same time and hopefully us gearing up for a big season next year, I'd be suggesting rest is a better policy."

In terms of the Copa America Romero is currently playing in, Argentina are due to take on Ecuador in the quarter-finals on Thursday after winning all three of their group games. If they do get the better of Ecuador in their game in Houston, Romero and Co. will face the winner of Venezuela and Canada in the semi-finals in New Jersey.

The final is due to be played in Miami on Sunday, July 14, with a third-place play-off played 24 hours earlier. Once the defender's time at the Copa America has come to an end and he has enjoyed a well-earned summer break, Romero will link up with his Tottenham teammates once again ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Dele Alli showed he still possesses all of his talent as footage of him training in pre-season was shared on Instagram.

The ex-Tottenham midfielder - currently a free agent - has been actively sharing his fitness journey on social media, signalling his determination to find a new club, reports the Express.

After undergoing surgery earlier this year to address a chronic groin problem, Alli is ramping up his rehabilitation efforts to ensure he's in top form for a potential return to the pitch.

The 28-year-old, who reached the Champions League final with Spurs in 2019, is keeping his followers in the loop with regular updates on Instagram, showcasing the intensive work he's undertaking to make a Premier League comeback.

In a recent clip posted by his coach under the handle @jazzi.fc, Alli can be seen in action engaging in various exercises including sprints, ball control work, and agility training. The video, which comes with the encouraging caption "We working @dele", reveals Alli looking sharp and acing the drills.

Tottenham fans, in particular, were delighted to see Alli back in action on the training pitch. Some even begged him to return home to north London, where he made the biggest impact of his career before joining Everton.

One person wrote: "Can't wait to see him back on the pitch." Another added: "Prem ain't ready for Dele's comeback." A third penned: "Can't wait to see you, my favourite player."

Someone else queried: "Come on @spursofficial we need him now." As another chimed in with: "Well done Dele, back to Spurs soon," followed by a trio of love heart emojis.

Alli is currently a free agent after his contract with Everton came to an end. However, it's understood the Toffees are open to discussions about a new deal with the former England international down the line.

Everton made it clear in May that Alli would not be offered a new contract but confirmed he would stay at the club during his rehabilitation. Director of football Kevin Thelwell stated: "Dele's contract is coming to an end, but our medical team will continue to support him while he completes the intensive rehabilitation programme he is currently undergoing following the operation he had earlier this year.

"Both Sean Dyche and I agree it is important we ensure Dele's rehabilitation is not impacted by his contract situation at such a critical point in his recovery."

Archie Gray and the future Tottenham XI Ange Postecoglou is quietly building behind the scenes

Tottenham are very much planning for the years ahead when it comes to their transfer deals. Archie Gray became the club's latest addition for the 2024/25 season and beyond on Tuesday after completing his move from Championship side Leeds United.

The 18-year-old cost Spurs just over £25million plus Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in a package worth around £40million, which then met the threshold for a clause within Gray's contract after Leeds failed to win promotion last season. After swapping Leeds for the Lilywhites, the Durham-born ace has penned a contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the summer of 2030.

The signing of Gray could prove to be a masterstroke by the football club after the versatile player took England's second tier by storm last season to earn the Championship's Young Player of the Season award. The most exciting thing about Gray is that there is still so much more to come from him, with Tottenham now set to benefit in the years ahead after luring him to N17 from Elland Road.

Gray joins Lucas Bergvall and Timo Werner in bolstering Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham squad ahead of the new campaign. Bergvall's move to the capital was confirmed at the beginning of February after Spurs won the race for his signature amid interest from Spanish giants Barcelona.

Like Gray, the Swede penned a long-term contract following his move to the club and his deal is due to expire at the end of the 2028/29 season. Tottenham are quietly building a rather impressive young team and the hope is that Gray and Bergvall will be influential figures in the XI for years to come.

The 2023/24 campaign was very much a breakout year for Pape Matar Sarr in the Premier League. Signed by former managing director of football Fabio Paratici in 2021, the Italian lauded the midfielder as "one of the most talented in Europe" at the time of his arrival.

Playing in Antonio Conte's Spurs XI on a handful of occasions, including an incredible Champions League debut against AC Milan in the San Siro, the 21-year-old has become a permanent fixture in Postecoglou's Spurs XI after delivering some huge performances that belie his tender years. The same goes for 2022 arrival Destiny Udogie.

After immediately returning to Udinese on loan following his Tottenham transfer, the Italian linked up with his Spurs teammates for the first time 12 months ago and immediately hit the ground running. Winning his first Italy cap as a result of his sparkling displays in the Premier League, Tottenham fans could potentially see even more from the youngster this coming season with a year's worth of top-flight experience now under his belt.

Tottenham were very much targeting players for the future in Postecoglou's first transfer window as Spurs boss, duly signing Ashley Phillips, Micky van de Ven, Alejo Veliz and Brennan Johnson in the summer window. While Phillips has yet to make his senior bow for the club but impressed in his time on loan at Plymouth Argyle, Van de Ven already appears to be one of the Premier League's best centre-backs following a fine first season in the capital.

Johnson initially had a slow start to his Tottenham career but he really turned it on come the turn of the year. There is still so much more to come from the 23-year-old, with his 15 goal involvements in 32 Premier League games for Spurs certainly a sign of things to come. Veliz was also a summer arrival at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium 12 months ago after joining from Rosario Central in Argentina.

Very much another one for the future as he will only turn 21 in September, the powerful striker had to make do with minutes off the bench in his debut year at the club prior to his Sevilla loan switch but he did find the net in the 4-2 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion in December. Young Croatian centre-back Luka Vuskovic was another 2023 addition, joining from Hajduk Split for a fee of £12million on a deal until the summer of 2030.

Signed as a 16-year-old, it won't be until 2025 when he can arrive in England when he is 18 years of age due to FIFA rules. Vuskovic spent the second half of last campaign on loan in Poland with Radomiak Radom and it proved to be a deal that suited all parties.

Showcasing that he is first and foremost a very talented centre-back, the starlet also proved that he can have an influence on proceedings at the other end of the pitch after chipping in with three goals and one assist. Vuskovic will spend the 2024/25 season out on loan once again and Tottenham do appear to have a gem on their hands in the Croat.

Staying in defence, Tottenham also have Radu Dragusin tied down to the summer of 2030 after he dismissed Bayern Munich's interest to join Spurs from Genoa in January. The 22-year-old was limited to nine appearances for the Lilywhites last season due to the form of Cristian Romero and Van de Ven but he demonstrated in his starts against Luton Town, Man City and Sheffield United that he is a very talented player.

Dragusin has done likewise at Euro 2024 this summer with Romania. The ex-Juventus man will now be looking to build on an impressive tournament with his country by forcing his way into the Tottenham XI and showcasing why Postecoglou was so keen to lure him to north London.

Tottenham fans will certainly be hopeful of seeing more of academy stars Tyrese Hall and Mikey Moore in the 2024/25 campaign. football.london understands that Postecoglou has taken a real liking to the duo in particular, with Hall impressing off the bench in the post-season friendly against Newcastle United and 16-year-old Moore going on to feature in the Man City and Sheffield United fixtures at the end of the term.

The pair will have their fingers crossed that more minutes come their way in pre-season and that they go on to play a part for the head coach next term with plenty of games already on the calendar. It remains to be seen where Jamie Donley will be playing his football next season after a sublime year that saw him register goals and assists for fun for the development squad.

Going on to make three appearances for Postecoglou's team, Donley is now in a position where he needs to be playing regular first-team football on a consistent basis to help aid his development. A loan move may well happen ahead of the summer transfer deadline but one thing for certain is that Tottenham have a very special player on their hands.

Will Lankshear was also amongst the goals last season, hitting 32 in all competitions as he played an integral role in the Under-21s lifting the Premier League 2 play-off final trophy. Like Donley, a loan move could be next for the prolific goalscorer before he hopefully goes on to make his mark in the Spurs first team.

Goalkeeper Josh Keeley, signed from St Patrick's Athletic in July 2022, is another talented star in the ranks along with players such as George Abbott, Tyrell Ashcroft, Alfie Dorrington, Jude Soonsup-Bell and Yago Santiago to name a few. There is then also Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett to consider, two players who have seemingly made a big impression on Postecoglou.

Troy Parrott is back at the club this summer after a fine season in the Eredivisie with Excelsior Rotterdam. However, his future remains up in the air at present due to his contract status and also plenty of interest in his services after more than making his case in the Netherlands.

Appearing to make some very smart investments over the past few years, Tottenham could be about to do the same in what remains of the 2024 summer transfer window. Postecoglou and the club are very much going about their business quietly behind the scenes when it comes to signing players that can form a team for years to come.

Add to the mix those really exciting youngsters currently coming through the academy at present, Tottenham supporters have plenty to look forward to over the coming years.

'Heartbroken' Leeds explain Archie Gray's £40m transfer to Tottenham and release clause

Description

Leeds United have explained why Archie Gray made the £40million move to Tottenham Hotspur and spoken about the 18-year-old's release clause.

The teenage midfielder had not been desperate to depart his boyhood club but Leeds' financial position after missing out on the riches of Premier League promotion, with a reported £190million still to be paid in transfer fee instalments, meant that Gray's exit would help ease some of that burden, even if it was a difficult departure to take for the supporters.

Brentford agreed terms with the youngster but then saw their £40million in total deal collapse as they could not agree on the structure of the payment terms. Spurs jumped in and agreed a deal with Leeds United that cost just over £25million plus Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in a package also worth around £40million.

Gray, who played 52 matches for Leeds last season, penned a six-year contract with Spurs and his boyhood club explained his departure in their statement about the move.

"Leeds United can confirm Archie Gray has completed a permanent transfer to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed fee, after the North London outfit met a release clause that was triggered by the club’s failure to get promoted at the first attempt," it read.

Later they added: "Understanding the attraction of Premier League and European football, the club, with a heavy heart, agreed the transfer, but the move has strengthened the board’s resolve to ultimately return Leeds to a position where it can meet the footballing ambitions of even its brightest stars.

"Whilst we understand that supporters will be hugely disappointed to lose such a home-grown talent, and a family name so synonymous with Leeds United, the move improves the club’s chance to compete for automatic promotion next season by increasing our ability to build a competitive squad within the league’s financial control regulations.

"Everyone at Leeds United is heartbroken to see one of our own depart and would like to thank Archie for all his efforts and professionalism. He leaves with the very best wishes for his future career and in the knowledge that Leeds will always be his home."

Tottenham next transfer decided after Archie Gray deal

Submitted by daniel on

Description

Tottenham have now completed two transfers this summer, as well as the signing of Lucas Bergvall in February for this summer too. Timo Werner signed a season-long loan deal at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium soon after the 2023/24 season finished and Spurs now have their first big-money signing of the window.

Archie Gray has joined the Ange Postecoglou revolution, with the 18-year-old completing a move from Leeds United for a fee in the region of £30million. Joe Rodon went in the opposite direction, for £10million, taking the full Gray deal to around £40million.

Spurs were expected to be busy in the summer transfer window and a number of players have already left the club. Tanguy Ndombele, Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon all left before Rodon's deal, while loanees Eric Dier and Ivan Perisic have departed at the ends of their contracts too.

Who will be the next player through the entrance door though, as Postecoglou looks to shape his squad for the 2024/25 campaign? football.london writers have their say.

Lee Wilmot

Two midfielders have arrived at the club now, with one of them able to play as a right-back. You would think Spurs might target the forward line now.

Of course Timo Werner has signed for the season, but he was there at the end of last season too, so it's as you were in that department really. A striker is what all the supporters are desperate for, either that or a forward who can play across the frontline.

Eberechi Eze has been mentioned, but interest has cooled, while the likes of Santiago Gimenez and Jonathan David have been linked too.

I would not be against a move for Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth. He only finished behind Erling Haaland, Cole Palmer and Alexander Isak in the scoring charts last season and will crucially be a homegrown player in the squad. He has plenty of Premier League experience and would fit in perfectly with Ange Postecoglou's side.

Alasdair Gold

Personally I'd look for an attacking player next, either a striker or a wide man who can play through the centre as well. Spurs have been looking at a number of attackers, with Jonathan David among them.

If Tottenham are looking to add another player before pre-season starts on Saturday to the likes of Gray, Werner and Bergvall, then it's unlikely to be the Canada international, who faces Venezuela in the early hours of that day (UK time) in the Copa America quarter-finals. Spurs would have to be patient if they wanted to sign the 24-year-old Lille striker, who has scored 26 goals in both of the previous two seasons, ahead of plenty of competition.

Whoever it may be, I would imagine an attacking player would be the next arrival simply based on the fact that Postecoglou told football.london last month in Melbourne that it was a priority position for him to improve his numbers in.

We reported last month that Tottenham have a strong interest in Rennes winger Desire Doue, an exciting 19-year-old who can play on either flank or in central midfield. He might be worth keeping an eye on as the north London club continue to try to hoover up the top young talent at home and abroad.

It could be a very exciting season at Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou. The Australian managed to implement his ideas quickly and for a period there was talk of a possible Premier League title challenge.

A lack of quality and bad luck on the injury front quickly ended such talk but Spurs should at least be looking to finish in the Champions League places. To do that, Postecoglou needs a top quality striker. Ivan Toney and Dominic Solanke would be my picks given the system Spurs play, with both able to be a focal point to the wide players either side.

If I was pushed I would opt for Toney as I really like the Brentford man. He is a proven Premier League goalscorer and should be available for a decent price this summer given he is now into the last year of his contract.

Tottenham are in an interesting place now that they've completed a deal to sign Archie Gray. While the deal represents a considerable outlay, it's been partly offset by Joe Rodon's exit, so frees up a bit more room to manouevre.

Lucas Bergvall's arrival is an interesting one, but I wouldn't expect him to play a big part next season. So I think there's still room to add an exciting attacker to the squad, be it in the forward line or an attacking midfielder.

For me, Ebere Eze would be the man to sign as a priority - assuming a deal can be done. It's a tricky one with Michael Olise set to leave Palace, but if you can get a deal done for the England international, you get it done.

If Eze is staying at Selhurst Park, I'd move for Jonathan David. Spurs lacked credible competition at No.9 last season with Son Heung-min and Richarlison not really setting out their stall as a direct replacement for Harry Kane. I think the Lille forward would add strength in depth and help push the Spurs duo to bring out their best performances.

For Ange Postecoglou, the focus has got to be on strengthening the attack, with the club yet to find a real replacement for Harry Kane following his move to Bayern Munich last year.

The club have been linked with several strikers over the last few month, with some costing more than others. One name that caught my eye was Barcelona’s Vitor Roque.

At tust 19 years old he will have the potential to grow with Spurs just as Kane did when making his breakthrough into the first team. Tottenham were linked with an interest when he moved to Barcelona in January.

It is reported that he could move again this summer. He has an impressive record of 23 goals in 64 appearances when playing as a central striker but is also able to play across the front line, he scored twice in 14 La Liga appearances for Barca last season.

Roque could be a signing that wouldn’t cost as much as other players such as Alexander Isak or Victor Osimhen but could possibly provide a long-term solution to Spurs.

Tottenham have used the Championship better than most in recent seasons. They have become one of the best developers of talent in the country and often use the second tier as a source of bringing in players.

Unlike many of the leagues across Europe in which players can often struggle to adapt to English football or the rise in standards, the Championship is a regular fountain of opportunities for clubs. Looking through the country's national side shows this enough.

Of the 26 players selected by Gareth Southgate for Euro 2024, only Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka haven't played for an EFL club at some stage of their career. They have, instead, come through directly from Premier League academies. The grounding of others throughout the pyramid is deeply impressive though.

Tottenham themselves have one of the strongest youth setups in the country, but more than ever they continue to scour and recruit from the Championship. Although it can be marketed as less glamorous, the grounding that most players have is invaluable.

It is telling that now, after signing Leeds United academy gem Archie Gray, Spurs have picked off four of the last 10 winners of an EFL/Championship Young Player of the Season. The list is impressive.

Dele in 2015 for his time at MK Dons - a season in which Tottenham beat the competition to pick him up over the winter before loaning back - Ryan Sessegnon taking things by storm at Fulham three years later, and then two of the past three seasons with Brennan Johnson's promotion securing 2022 followed by Gray.

This is a stellar cast of names even if the success hasn't been sustained. For a period Dele was the best young player - perhaps the best player - in the Premier League. He has reached a World Cup semi-final, a Champions League final, and exploded to a peak that very few have. Sessegnon has not been as able to hit those heights, but there is little doubting the ability he has.

Johnson had a hit-and-miss first year at Spurs but has shown enough signs to suggest that even £45million is not too much to have paid for him. Whilst Gray is one of the very top prospects around. If this list of players isn't enough then perhaps the others that Spurs haven't managed to sign tells a better story.

Ollie Watkins, Jude Bellingham, Michael Olise, and Max Aarons are among the other winners. Alex Scott of Bournemouth now is another. There is some way for a few of these to go to life up to the heights of Bellingham and Olise, or even Watkins, but it's good company to be in.

Olise and Bellingham, surely, would be starting players for Tottenham. Watkins would likely be as well. This is the level of the players that can be picked up below the surface. It is noticeable, too, that even the four they have signed here is not the extent to the interest.

Aarons was a target previously, so was Scott. Gray arriving is no fluke and represents a commitment to a blueprint that has largely brought success so far for the club. Djed Spence from Middlesbrough after his loan at Forest has not worked out but at the time the money spent on him looked wise.

Joe Rodon at Swansea has been of use in and out of the senior side before being used in the Gray deal too. He is another EFL graduate.

Tottenham's plans with Gray now wait to be seen, but if he can live up to the expectations and the levels of some of those going before him then Ange Postecoglou will be in for a treat.
