Archie Gray has the potential to be compared to Jude Bellingham and can be a generational talent, a regular member of the Leeds United press pack has said of Tottenham's new signing.

The 18-year-old was named Championship Young Player of the Year last season and was snapped up by Spurs on Tuesday after putting pen to paper on a six-year contract with the Premier League club. Tottenham agreed a transfer deal with Leeds that cost them just over £25million with Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in an overall package worth around £40million, which met the threshold for a clause within Gray's contract after Leeds failed to earn promotion last season.

Having watched Gray week in, week out over a season in which the teenager played 52 times for his boyhood club, we asked Leeds Live's United reporter Beren Cross a series of questions about the young starlet. Here's the lowdown he gave us.

How have the Leeds fans taken this move?

In short: with disappointment and sadness. Gray had become the pin-up for so many supporters over the course of that first season in the first team. As an 18-year-old academy graduate with the hallmarks of the best Leeds product in decades, with that surname, many had pinned their hopes on Gray becoming the heartbeat of the team for at least two or three more years. Regardless of the reasons behind the transfer, it is a tough one to swallow.

What makes Archie Gray so special?

That’s a very tough question to answer. The bottom line is, for every attribute you describe, it’s set against the context he is still only 18 years old. It’s remarkable how composed and intelligent he is with such little senior experience of the game.

He’s not flawless, of course. There have been games where he has struggled, but those were rare and often playing in his weaker position of right-back against tricky wingers on the back of five matches in 20 or 25 days.

He’s a fighter too. He does not shirk challenges. He is not cowed by anyone, despite his tender years and slender frame. When a boot needs putting in, he’ll put it in. His control at close quarters with opponents always caught the eye too. He rarely gave the ball away and would find his way out of tight spots.

There’s the obvious stuff he can do too, like threading a pass over long and short distances. Goals and assists didn’t flow, but he spent the majority of the year at right-back.

Is he ready for the Premier League?

Yes. Many Spurs fans will have already seen the compilation of highlights from his FA Cup appearance at Chelsea last season. In one match, playing in midfield, he ran the game despite being faced with Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.

Postecoglou wants players to play without fear and always looking to pass and move forward quickly - does that suit Archie's style?

Yes, you can read the above descriptions. He is fearless and he has the technical ability to do whatever Postecoglou wants him to do with the ball.

What position do you think he will eventually settle into as his main one?

I can’t predict what Tottenham will do with him, but I know he sees himself as a midfielder. Ultimately, he’s too good to be a right-back. As his game becomes more complete, he has to be at the heart of things.

How will he get on with the big stars in the dressing room?

Well, he’s very polite, humble and popular at Leeds, so I would imagine very well.

He had a strong bond with the Leeds fans thanks to his family heritage, is he the type the Spurs fans will take to without that?

Absolutely. What fan doesn’t love a brave, technically gifted, hard-working fighter?

What can Tottenham expect from him over the years to come?

Well, I noticed on the Gold and Guest podcast there was a reluctance to mention Jude Bellingham too frequently, but that’s the kind of comparison we have been making at Elland Road. Nobody can be sure he will be as good as Bellingham, but this is the type of company we think he will eventually keep.

If he’s this good at 18, with the right environment, there is only one direction he can go in. Gareth Southgate was dropping his name in press conferences last season after one senior season of football that was spent in the Championship. He can be a generational talent.

Archie Gray has completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur and will wear the iconic number 14 shirt for the club.

On Tuesday, Spurs announced the transfer for the Championship Young Player of the Year that will cost the club over £25million plus Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in a package worth around £40million, which met the threshold for a clause within Gray's contract after Leeds failed to get promotion last season.

Gray has signed a six-year deal with the north London club and will wear the number 14 shirt for the coming season, a number made famous by the likes of David Ginola, Luka Modric and worn in recent years by Rodon and Ivan Perisic. He becomes Tottenham's third summer arrival so far after Lucas Bergvall, who signed from Djurgarden in February ahead of a July 1 arrival, and Timo Werner, who had his loan move from RB Leipzig extended to the end of this coming season.

Tottenham jumped into the fold for Gray when his advanced move to Brentford collapsed as the Bees could not agree terms on the payment structure for their deal worth up to £40million.

Gray has a real family footballing dynasty at Leeds with his father Andy, grandfather Frank and great uncle Eddie all playing for the Yorkshire club. The teenager has played through the age groups for England and made his first appearances for the U21s earlier this year in the European Championship qualifying victories against Azerbaijan and Luxembourg, with a goal on his debut in the first match.

Rodon has joined Leeds on a four-year deal after rejecting Premier League interest from Ipswich, Leicester and Brentford to go back to the Championship club after a season the Wales international relished despite his difficult end in the play-off final defeat to Southampton at Wembley.

Archie Gray pens emotional farewell to Leeds United following Tottenham transfer

Archie Gray has posted a heartfelt farewell to Leeds United following his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 18-year-old Championship Young Player of the Year joined Spurs on Tuesday after agreeing a six-year contract with the Premier League club. Tottenham had agreed a transfer package with Leeds that cost them just over £25million with Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in an overall deal worth around £40million, which met the threshold for a clause within Gray's contract after Leeds failed to earn promotion last season.

Gray played 52 times for Leeds last season as an integral player under Daniel Farke, but the club missed out on a spot in the Premier League despite earning 90 points as they lost in the play-off final to Southampton. With all the missed finances that come with promotion to the top flight, Leeds were put in a position where they needed the money from a big move even if Gray had indicated a desire to remain at his boyhood club.

In a post on Instagram on Tuesday, the teenager expressed his love for the club that he has left after more than a decade to join Ange Postecoglou's side, leaving his 15-year-old brother Harry to continue the family legacy in the Leeds academy.

"Can’t thank everyone at Leeds United enough for the past 11 years, from the all the coaches I’ve had from when I first came at seven-years-old to all the coaching staff now," wrote Gray. "I have enjoyed every second of my time at the club and have so many great memories for life from watching in the stands to playing on the pitch.

"I would also like to say a massive thank you to all of the managers that I have had but especially Daniel Farke, for trusting me this year and giving me the opportunity to play and teaching me so much about the game I am so grateful for him and all the coaching staff.

"Along the way I have made friends for life and I am also grateful for every teammate I’ve been with from the age of seven to the teammates last season. And for the fans you are amazing and I can’t thank you enough for the support you have given me and hopefully Harry in the next few years to come. We will cross paths again."

Every word Archie Gray said on signing for Tottenham and the major role Ange Postecoglou played - Football.London
Description

Archie Gray has admitted that the presence of Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur was a major factor in his move to north London for both him and his family.

The 18-year-old has penned a six-year contract with Spurs after the club agreed a deal with Leeds United that cost the Premier League side just over £25million plus Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in a package worth around £40million, which then met the threshold for a clause within Gray's contract after Leeds failed to get promotion last season.

Gray said that the Postecoglou factor was a big one in joining Tottenham as he admitted that he and his family are big Celtic fans so the Australian had made a major impact on them all.

"I'm really excited. It's obviously a massive club and an opportunity that I couldn't really turn down. I'm just really excited to play and get started with the team. It hasn't really sunk in to be honest and I don't think it will for the next few days. Until we've played a few games and I've got to meet everyone, it won't have sunk in. I'm just really excited and looking forward to it. It's a massive opportunity for me so I'm really excited," he said in his club interview.

"When Spurs came and I had the opportunity to play in the Champions League eventually and Europa League this year I couldn't really say no. I know so many players that are here, not so much the first team but the young lads and another thing is that it's a massive project under Ange and it's something that I want to be a part of.

"I'm not going to lie to you, I'm a massive Celtic fan so I love him and my whole family loves him. I haven't really said this to be fair. He's also a massive factor because playing under a really good manager is really important for me as well. I've still got loads to learn because I'm only 18 so it's really important."

Gray has grown up as a central midfielder and dazzled in the role against Chelsea as a 17-year-old last season in the FA Cup fifth round clash at Stamford Bridge, but played much of the campaign for Leeds as a right-back and he believes that versatility will be a major benefit to Spurs for the coming years.

"Obviously I see myself as a midfielder as my ideal position but I don't put myself down to one position. I think I'm a versatile player and I can play in a lot of positions on the pitch which is really effective when you've got so many competitions and so many games this year," said the teenager.

"You don't want to have too big a squad and it can be really helpful for the team to be really versatile and I'm not bothered where I'm going to play, I'm just going to give 100% and that's all that matters really and to try to perform my best here."

On that squad he will be joining, led by captain Son Heung-min, he added: "There are so many huge names and to be honest I'm just really grateful that I'll be able to train with them every day and I just want to show them why they've signed me and show them my worth. Hopefully I'll be able to get playing with them on the pitch and I just can't wait to get training with them and get to know them, but honestly I'm just really grateful for the opportunity and they're all massive players and I just can't wait to meet them."

Gray is confident that he can step up to the demands of the Premier League and believes that certain aspects of the English top flight will suit his game down to the ground.

"I think there's loads of things I've got learn and I think some parts of the Premier League will suit me more than some parts of the Championship would. I think I'm ready for it and the fitness side of it, it suits my game so much and the technical aspect really suits me as well," he explained.

"Quite a lot of it suits me but there's obviously loads of things I need to start learning and I need to do it in pre-season and get ready. Obviously it's a different league and I need to get ready for that, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to learn really quickly and perform to my best in every game.

"I'm just hoping to play as many games as I can and help push the team on even more. If it's being as competitive as I can in training every day and pushing the players, trying to get into the team ultimately at the start, then trying to stay in the team. We've got a really strong connection with the fans which I think is really important as well.

"Obviously that was massive at Leeds. This club's got the same thing going on with the fans and that's really important for me. I want to create a strong bond with the fans and with the club, so I'm just really looking forward to that."

Leeds United facing 'almighty backlash' as Tottenham confirm £40m Archie Gray transfer

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed their second summer signing after announcing that Archie Gray has completed a £40million move from Championship side Leeds United.

Gray lit up the Championship last season, despite being just 17 for much of it, playing 52 times for the Whites. The casual observer may think many of those appearances might have come off the substitutes' bench given he is a teenager, but they would be wrong - Gray played the full 90 minutes for Leeds 41 times.

Able to play in the midfield or at right-back, Gray has been described as a generational talent and England manager Gareth Southgate has already namechecked him as a potential senior international moving forward.

"There are some players with the Under-21s who are doing exceptionally well, especially in midfield," Southgate said in May. "The likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Harvey Elliott, Rico [Lewis] was with us last time, Archie Gray at Leeds is doing very, very well I have to say, so there are a number of players in that group we could move in."

Gray had looked set for a move to Brentford, but having seemingly agreed on a price, the Bees could not get the transfer over the line, with disagreements over the structure of the deal. Spurs swooped and have got their man, with Joe Rodon heading in the opposite direction in a separate deal worth around £10million.

Leeds United needed to sell this summer to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules, although any deal did not need to be completed before July 1. Gray was not one the club wanted to part with though.

Leeds Live writer Beren Cross told football.london that supporters would have much preferred to sell Crysencio Summerville and in fact almost every single other member of the squad than Gray.

He said: "Archie Gray is one of the players to come out of last season with a high profile. The 18-year-old was named Championship Young Player of the Season.

"His name is iconic in Leeds circles, as the grandson of Frank and great-nephew of Eddie, and as a product of the academy, he bleeds white. While supporters understand money needs to be raised this summer, they would rather sell every player in the squad before parting with Gray.

"While Summerville’s aspirations and trajectory are accepted, at 18, there is belief Gray can have more years with his boyhood club to develop before flying the nest. There is no hiding the fact Gray can become a generational England talent. Gareth Southgate has already started talking about him after one full season of senior football.

"Any fee raised for him this summer could feasibly be doubled in two more years, if Leeds can just hold on. [Paraag] Marathe and the board know they will face an almighty backlash if Gray is sold this summer."

Tottenham confirm £10m departure as Archie Gray transfer from Leeds United announced

Tottenham have sold Joe Rodon to Leeds United in a deal worth £10million, with Archie Gray arriving from Elland Road in a separate deal.

Gray has penned a six-year deal with Spurs, keeping him tied to the club until 2030. Football.london understands the move will cost Tottenham between £25million and £30million. The 18-year-old - who had been linked to a number of Premier League clubs - looked set to sign for Brentford but a payment structure could not be agreed, allowing Spurs to come in.

Gray - the son of former Leeds star Andy - played most of last season at right-back despite being a natural midfielder. He tallied 52 appearances - of which 47 were starts - for Leeds last term, grabbing two assists.

Meanwhile, Rodon spent last season out on loan at Leeds, making 50 appearances alongside Gray as the club reached the Championship play-off final. The defender only played 24 times in four years for Spurs, having arrived from Swansea City in October 2020.

Wales international Rodon's last game for Tottenham came in the form of a late cameo in a 1-0 win over Burnley in May 2022. His exit is timed with the arrival of Gray, who will wear the No.14 shirt.

It is understood that Rodon preferred a move back to Leeds on a four-year deal despite interest from newly-promoted Premier League sides Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

Rodon becomes the first Tottenham sale of the summer. Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Tanguy Ndombele and Japhet Tanganga left the club last month upon the end of their contracts.

Meanwhile, Gray technically becomes the third player Ange Postecoglou has already welcomed in this summer, with Timo Werner securing a loan return to Spurs with an option to buy, following his short spell at the club last season.

Lucas Bergvall also saw his £8.5million transfer from Djurgarden made official on Monday, having agreed to a move back in February.

Tottenham seal Archie Gray transfer from Leeds Utd as third summer arrival confirmed

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Archie Gray from Championship side Leeds United on a six-year deal. Following an incredible breakout season at Elland Road, Spurs have won the race for the 18-year-old's signature after a move to Brentford collapsed at the eleventh hour on Sunday morning.

Tottenham duly stepped in and have now wrapped up a deal that is expected to cost between £25million and £30million with Joe Rodon joining Leeds on a permanent basis after such a successful loan campaign in West Yorkshire last term. After signing on the dotted line in north London, Gray has penned a six-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Making such an impression in Leeds United's academy, Gray made the bench as a 15-year-old in a Premier League clash against Arsenal in December 2021. Included in the matchday squad in the league a further 11 times after that but unfortunately not coming off the bench to make his Premier League debut, Gray's senior Leeds bow came last August when he was named in the starting XI in their Championship opener against Cardiff City.

Excelling in a 2-2 draw against the Bluebirds, the Durham-born ace didn't look back from that moment on and went on to make 52 appearances in all competitions under Daniel Farke. Just missing out on promotion back to the Premier League following a 1-0 defeat against Southampton in the play-off final, Gray's future was always up in the air ahead of the 2024/25 season with the West Yorkshire club in desperate need to bring some money into the club.

After his move to Brentford fell apart as the Bees could not agree on a payment structure with Leeds for the versatile player, Tottenham nipped in to seal the signing of the England Under-21s international. Gray will add to the competition in Tottenham's midfield and he can also provide cover at right-back after playing in the position 30 times for Leeds last campaign.

Gray joins Lucas Bergvall in making the move to Tottenham ahead of the new term, with Timo Werner also part of Postecoglou's 2024/25 plans after re-signing for the club on a season-long loan deal. Gray's Spurs debut could potentially come on Wednesday, July 17 when they travel to Edinburgh to take on Scottish Premiership side Hearts.

Gray will wear the No.14 shirt for Tottenham.

Tottenham Hotspur have sealed their third new arrival of the summer transfer window with the transfer of exciting teenager Archie Gray from Leeds United.

Gray, who only turned 18 in March, played 52 times for Leeds last season, including starring as a 17-year-old against Chelsea in the FA Cup fifth round. Now he has joined Spurs in a transfer that will cost the north London club between £25million and £30million, with Joe Rodon heading the other way in a separate move which takes the total package up to one approaching £40million.

The teenager, who signed a six year deal with the north London club, is Tottenham's third summer arrival so far after Lucas Bergvall, who signed from Djurgarden in February ahead of a July 1 arrival, and Timo Werner, who had his loan move from RB Leipzig extended to the end of this coming season.

With Gray, Tottenham jumped into the fold when his advanced move to Brentford collapsed as the Bees could not agree terms on the payment structure for their deal worth up to £40million.

With Gray able to play in centre midfield and at right-back, our Spurs correspondents Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest discussed where he fits into Ange Postecoglou's squad and how the Australian will use him in the latest episode of their podcast Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham.

The duo also spoke about Rodon's move and his difficult time at Spurs as well as looking at the club's new training wear sponsorship deal with BetMGM, which will net them a reported £10million a season, and plenty more.

Archie Gray has already passed Tottenham Premier League audition after £220m masterclass

Any Tottenham fans with doubts over Archie Gray's ability may want to rewatch the midfielder's performance against Chelsea back in February. After progressing past Plymouth Argyle in an FA Cup fourth round replay, Leeds United's prize for a 4-1 victory in Devon was a mouth-watering showdown against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Given Leeds' fine performances in the Championship coupled with the Blues' struggles in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino, many fans sensed a famous FA Cup upset on the cards. Fielding a fairly strong XI days after their Carabao Cup final defeat against Liverpool, Chelsea were given an almighty scare by Leeds.

Initially taking the lead through Mateo Joseph in the eighth minute before Chelsea went in 2-1 up at the break, Joseph netted his second of the game on the hour mark and the tie appeared to be heading into extra-time. However, there was a late twist in the tale with substitute Conor Gallagher scoring a 90th-minute winner to break Leeds hearts.

Chelsea were pushed right until the end by their Championship opponents, with Gray an influential figure for Daniel Farke's side over the course of the 90 minutes. Having operated as a right-back from the start of October onwards after previously starting the season in midfield, Gray switched back to his natural position in the FA Cup tie.

Paired alongside former Chelsea midfielder Ethan Ampadu in the middle of the park, Gray was not overawed by coming up against £220million duo Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo. In fact, it only spurred him on as he delivered a performance that belied his tender years.

The then 17-year-old outshone his Blues counterparts and duly came out with the player of the match award following an incredible performance. Rated incredibly highly by all at Elland Road, Gray demonstrated to all watching on across the country that he can indeed cut it against the Premier League's best.

In terms of his numbers from the match (via FotMob), Gray registered a pass completion rate of 93 per cent after achieving 40 of his 43 passes, he was successful with four of his six dribbles, he made four passes into the final third, created one chance, made six recoveries and won six of his duels. It was no surprise at all to see him collect the player of the match gong after showcasing to everyone just what a talent he is.

Gray scored incredibly highly in Leeds Live's player ratings from the game after achieving a score of nine out of ten. They wrote: "A performance beyond his years. Not the first time this season it has felt like he came of age, but in this company, to run a second half at Stamford Bridge at 17 was pretty special. Breathtaking talent. Never seemed fazed or rushed by anything in the busiest part of the pitch. Instrumental to United's second-half renaissance."

Gray will now get the opportunity to test himself on a weekly basis in the Premier League next season after Tottenham made their move to sign him after a switch to Brentford fell apart late on. Set to be one of a number of options in midfield for Ange Postecoglou next term, the head coach will have quite the decision on his hands with a number of talented players to pick from.

There should certainly be no doubts about whether or not Gray has what it takes to make it in the Premier League, with his performance against Chelsea back in February very much proving that he can flourish for Tottenham in England's top flight.
