Description

This weekend sees the latest instalment of our north London rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur, as we take on our neighbours in WSL action.

Ahead of the game at Brisbane Road, whet your appetite for derby day by reminiscing about five of our best away days against Spurs:

November 17, 2019

Tottenham Hotspur 0-2 Arsenal

But we exerted our dominance after the break and Kim Little found the bottom corner to hand us the advantage on 66 minutes, and then nine minutes from time Vivianne Miedema tapped home to secure the points, earn the derby day bragging rights and keep us in touch with leaders Chelsea.

Fast forward to March 2021 and we were back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for an even more convincing win, this time with the goals coming from Caitlin Foord, Miedema and Katie McCabe.

We started strongly and, after Jordan Nobbs fired wide early on, Foord gave us the lead in style. The Australia international played a quick one-two with Noelle Maritz down the right wing, before arriving inside the area and finding the bottom corner.

Miedema then went on to double our advantage on the stroke of half-time - and in some style too. Katie McCabe floated an inch-perfect corner delivery into the penalty area and Miedema found the top corner with a stunning volley on her left foot.

McCabe wreaked havoc on Tottenham’s defence all afternoon, and shortly after the hour mark she grabbed her reward, racing in behind and coolly finishing into the bottom corner.

The venue was different the following season as we visited The Hive in Barnet for a 1-1 draw in November. The stalemate is mostly memorable for Miedema’s 92nd minute equaliser, after Rachel Williams opened the scoring for the hosts.

After failing to clear our lines from a drilled delivery into the penalty area, Williams reacted first and managed to bundle the ball over the line against the run of play.

But, with one last searching corner delivery into the penalty area from McCabe, Miedema climbed high above her marker and thumped a powerful header beyond the reach of Tinja-Riikka Korpela, salvaging a late point deep into stoppage time.

It was a different story in March 2023 at Brisbane Road in Leyton, where we put five past our local rivals. Stina Blackstenius and Foord put us 2-0 up before Bethany England reduced the arrears from the penalty spot.

We made sure of the win in the second half courtesy of goals from Kim Little, Foord and Frida Maanum.

Blackstenius opened the scoring with a superb hit, after a threaded ball from Leah Williamson found our Swedish striker's curling run into the final third. On the half-hour mark, Foord popped up to double our advantage with a great solo effort, driving at the penalty area and striking the ball low and hard into the back of the net.

After England pulled one back, Little converted yet another penalty for our Gunners after McCabe was brought down in the area. This was swiftly followed by Foord's second of the afternoon, assisted again by Pelova, with Foord waiting by the far post as she buried past Korpela with composure.

Then, Maanum’s audacious lob over the Spurs keeper made it five to round off a rampant victory over our local rivals.

In November 2024, we were back to winning ways at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, getting off to a flying start with Alessia Russo’s second minute opener before goals from Maanum and Blackstenius made it three to the good.

Mariona Caldentey created our opening goal when she found Russo inside the 18-yard box. Our centre-forward made no mistake, nestling the ball into the bottom right corner on her left foot.

Blackstenius found the back of the net in the second half courtesy of a clever touch from Mariona.

4 stats you must know before we play Tottenham | Statistics | News - Arsenal.com
Description

We head to Brisbane Road for a clash against north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, looking to replicate our success over Spurs in the 2024/25 campaign.

Renée Slegers' side proved too good for Spurs last season, winning 3-0 away before demolishing our rivals 5-0 at Emirates Stadium.

Ahead of our first north London derby this term, we've delved into the details to give you all the best statistics from this fixture, courtesy of Opta.

north london is red

Since Tottenham's promotion in 2019, we've played our north London rivals on 11 occasions in the Women's Super League - taking the lion's share of the victories. Of those 11 contests, we have won nine times, with one draw and one defeat the only blemishes on a fine run of results.

Our maiden top-flight contest took place in November 2019, as Kim Little netted the first goal in a WSL north London derby in a 2-0 victory.

We've racked up some big triumphs since that first meeting, including a 6-1 win in October 2020, a 5-1 victory in March 2023, and a big 5-0 success in February this year.

food for foord

When it comes to the north London derby, Caitlin Foord cleans up.

Our Australian winger has had a habit of netting against Tottenham since joining us from Portland Thorns in 2020. Her first efforts came in a 6-1 win in October 2020, bagging a brace at Meadow Park.

In total, Caitlin has scored seven times against Tottenham in her career; only Viv Miedema has found the net more often with nine.

In our current squad, just Beth Mead has a better record against a fellow WSL opponent than Caitlin's tally over Spurs. Beth has scored nine times against Chelsea in her career and eight against Brighton.

goals incoming?

We have been the great entertainers in 2025 in the Women's Super League, as no team has scored more times than Slegers' side so far this calendar year. Our Gunners have netted 60 league goals in just 20 matches, 12 more than any other side in 2025. We have only bettered that tally in a calendar year once, netting 69 times in 23 matches in 2018.

A free-scoring 2025 kicked off with a 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace, and since then, we have scored four or more times in a single match on 10 separate occasions, the most recent a 4-1 win over Leicester City.

In addition to scoring, we are also leading the charts in passing. Our passing accuracy of 84.7% is the best in the WSL; Tottenham's 78.7% accuracy ranks ninth.

Similarly, we have the highest possession average of any side in the league this campaign, taking an average of 59.1% of the ball per game. Tottenham rank fifth in that metric, having an average of 49.9%.

On top of that, Tottenham appear to be one of our favourite opponents when it comes to finding the back of the net.

Since our first clash in 2019, we have netted 33 times in 11 matches, averaging three goals a game against the Lilywhites. We've only scored more times against West Ham United and Brighton in the same timeframe.

Card game

There's plenty of passion on show in a north London derby, and that will be no different this weekend. However, the north London derby is the most-played derby fixture in Women's Super League history to have never seen a red card brandished for either side.

But with 41 cautions shown, this is the fixture that averages more yellow cards per game than any other to have been played at least twice overall (3.7).

No side has committed more fouls than Tottenham in the WSL this season, 86, compared to our 55, the second fewest in the league. Spurs have also picked up the highest number of yellow cards this campaign, collecting 19 cautions to our six.

Arteta on the result, our reaction and resetting

Arteta on the result, our reaction and resetting | Interview | News - Arsenal.com
Description

After overseeing our topsy-turvy 2-2 draw against Sunderland, Mikel Arteta was left with a mixture of disappointment and pride after leaving with a point.

We trailed at the break after Dan Ballard’s opener, but efforts from Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard during a much-improved second half saw us come within touching distance of a 12th successive win, but Brian Brobbey’s acrobatic equaliser forced us to settle for a draw.

Mikel was diplomatic post-match, and admitted that while in the immediate aftermath, he was unhappy to see us concede late on, he was delighted that his players stretched their unbeaten run to 14 matches despite plenty of recent challenges.

“We’re obviously disappointed that we lost two points,” he said. “We knew that it was going to be really tough, really disruptive, a lot of stop and start, a lot of long balls. We dealt with that the majority of the time good, but we conceded two goals in a way that we should have defended better.

“After 1-0, I think the team reacted really well. We scored a goal, scored a second goal, really dominated the game and created more chances, and then at the end, they don’t need much, just a ball in the air, it’s a front-up ball where we can deal with that better. We conceded a goal, but we reacted immediately and we have a massive chance with Richy and Mikel to win the game.

“So overall, we’re disappointed with the result, but so proud of the players because putting into perspective what they’ve done in the last 10 games, winning all of them with the amount of clean sheets that they had, with seven players injured.”

After another gruelling run of seven games in 21 days, which we’ve managed to navigate despite a host of injuries and still remain unbeaten, Mikel is looking forward to a couple of weeks to reassess our start to the season, and take stock of where we are.

With massive matches on the horizon against Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and Chelsea next on the calendar, the boss is eager to get some more players back at his disposal, ready for that run, as we look to stretch our unbeaten run even further.

“Now we reset with the international break, get the [international] players back nice and healthy, the ones that are not healthy make sure that they get healthy, and we go again.

“We’ll look back at what we’ve done, take all of the positive things that we do, the things that we have the opportunity to improve as well and start to plan what is coming because it’s going to be very demanding.

“Our supporters have been amazing again today, thank you so much. They’ve been all over us the last few weeks, and we’re going to need them with us.”

Women 3 - 4 Tottenham Hotspur Women - Match Report - Arsenal.com
Description

Our first pre-season game back at Meadow Park ended in a 4-3 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Victoria Pelova opened the scoring early on, before Bethany England equalised for the visitors.

We went ahead again though when Alessia Russo’s cross was turned into the Spurs net by Charli Grant.

England equalised from the penalty spot after the referee spotted a foul from Russo in the second half, and the away side went in front when Matilda Vinberg made it 3-2.

Caitlin Foord pulled us back level before Eveliina Summanen’s free-kick made it 4-3 to Spurs.

FIRST HALF

Looking lively from the off, Mariona Caldentey teed up Pelova, who cushioned the ball onto the underside of the bar, before Russo’s follow-up header also hit the bar on the way over.

Vinberg shot over the bar from long range with Spurs’ first effort moments later.

It was 1-0 to The Arsenal in the seventh minute. After a long ball over the top from Emily Fox, Pelova raced into the 18-yard box and tucked it in at the near post.

Katie McCabe’s in-swinging free-kick was then parried over the bar by Lize Kop, and McCabe’s following corner was smashed over the bar by Kyra Cooney-Cross.

We won the ball and Russo tried her luck from about 35 yards out but it flew wide of the top right, before Lotte Wubben-Moy gave away possession in a dangerous area and Bethany England capitalised, shooting into the roof of the net to equalise.

Mariona’s free-kick was then headed wide by Wubben-Moy. At the other end, Summanen’s corner was headed back across goal by England and nodded over by Drew Spence.

Our PFA Player of the Year Mariona sent a free-kick marginally wide of the top left corner just shy of the half-hour mark, and four minutes later we took the lead again.

Russo turned and crossed and Grant tried to control the ball for Kop, but it trickled into the bottom right corner for 2-1.

Cooney-Cross shot over from long range with half-time approaching and Josefine Rybrink headed over a Spurs corner as we headed into the interval a goal to the good.

SECOND HALf

We made three changes at half-time, summer signings Olivia Smith and Taylor Hinds coming on for McCabe and Wubben-Moy, while Laia Codina was introduced in place of Kelly.

Spurs equalised again in the 58th minute, the referee pointing to the penalty spot following a foul from Russo. England stepped up and slotted into the bottom left corner for 2-2.

Two became three for Spurs when Vinberg burst through on goal and shot into the bottom right corner to put us behind for the first time in the game.

There was another triple change in the 63rd minute, as Jenna Nighswonger, Katie Reid and Foord came on for Mead, Mariona and Russo.

We equalised in the 73rd minute, Steph Catley playing a long ball over the top to Foord, who went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and made no mistake, picking out the bottom left corner for 3-3.

Renee Slegers then made two further changes, bringing on Kim Little and Sophie Harwood for Pelova and Fox.

Spurs were quickly back in front though, as Summanen’s free-kick was too powerful for Borbe.

Cooney-Cross had another go from distance in the 82nd minute, but again the ball flew over the bar.

Our substitutes combined when Smith crossed for Hinds, but the latter couldn’t direct her effort towards goal in the game’s dying embers.

Six minutes were added on at the end of the second half and Nighswonger almost found a fourth goal in the 95th minute, but her left-footed effort was straight at Kop.
