Attempts from Tottenham to secure a second attacker on deadline day with a ‘flurry of calls’ to see if the signing would be possible have been revealed.

Spurs had a busy deadline day, as they secured the signing of Randal Kolo Muani on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. That signing will fill the void left by departing legend Son Heung-min.

PSG wanted Kolo Muani’s move to north London to have an obligation to buy included, but Daniel Levy managed to land the striker without.

And after Tottenham did not need to make a financial commitment to that signing, they went after another forward: Malick Fofana.

GIVEMESPORT reports Spurs made a ‘last-gasp attempt’ to sign the Lyon winger, though their approach was swiftly turned down by the French club, as they had limited time to source a replacement.

After making a ‘flurry of calls’ to find a new attacker just before the 7pm deadline on September 1, Tottenham entered talks to find out what it would take to land Fofana.

Though they were turned away by Lyon, Spurs are said to see Fofana as a ‘serious candidate’ to join their attack and will weigh up returning for him when the window reopens in January.

More deadline day Tottenham attempts

Fofana was not the only winger Spurs were looking to sign on deadline day.

TEAMtalk reported on multiple occasions that Ademola Lookman was a target, and there was confidence he could be signed if Spurs were willing to pay the £43million for him – the same price Fofana was valued at.

But we revealed late on that Tottenham had struggled to get Atalanta to agree to their preferred formula – a loan with an option to buy.

They also saw a move for a central player like Kolo Muani as more important, and with that deal essentially done while they were still negotiating for Lookman, they focussed attention there.

Tottenham round-up: Big snub revealed

A report has revealed that Spurs backed away from the signing of AC Milan forward Rafael Leao on deadline day.

But they were quoted £87million for his signing, and decided to focus on Kolo Muani instead.

Upon the signing of the Frenchman, Thomas Frank said: “Randal is a quality player who has proven himself over a number of years, playing for big teams in the Champions League and also with good experience for the France national team.

“He’s a good age, in the prime of his career, has good qualities that will suit both us and the Premier League, and gives us a different option in the final third being able to play out wide and through the middle.

“We are all excited for what Randal can add to the squad, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Trusted reporter Miguel Delaney has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur backed away from what would have been one of the biggest deals of the summer transfer window as they enquired after an elite attacking talent.

Spurs swooped to sign France international forward Randal Kolo Muani on deadline day over fears that Dominic Solanke’s ankle injury could be worse than first feared and keep him sidelined for at least two months.

While Kolo Muani nominally plays as a No.9, he can also cover the wide positions, and Tottenham were also in the market for a left-sided attacker on the final day of the window.

Attempts to tempt Manchester City into the sale of Savinho fell through, while a proposed swoop for Atalanta star Ademola Lookman also collapsed over the conditions of the deal.

Delaney, meanwhile, also claims that Spurs explored a move for Milan attacker Rafael Leao in the final 36 hours of the window, only to be quoted a monster fee by the Serie A giants.

Spurs insider Paul O’Keefe also stated that Tottenham were priced out of a move for Leao, with the Rossoneri demanding too high a transfer fee.

This news has now been clarified by The Independent‘s Delaney, who revealed that the Serie A club asked the north London outfit to pay a whopping €100m (£87m) for the Portugal international.

Delaney told The Independent’s Inside Football newsletter: “AC Milan quoted Tottenham Hotspur as much as €100m for Rafael Leao, as sources state that Spurs had cast around for a number of forwards in the final 36 hours of the window.

“That was how they ended up with Paris Saint-Germain’s Randal Kolo Muani on loan after protracted negotiations about an option to buy.”

Frank insistent on only signing attacking upgrades

Meanwhile, Delaney explained that Thomas Frank insisted that he only wanted forwards who would improve his squad instead of making signings just for the sake of it.

Delaney also stated that Frank is willing to use Kolo Muani in the troublesome left-wing position, if required.

He added: “Thomas Frank, for his part, was insistent that they only bring in forwards that actually elevate the squad. An eventual list that also includes Xavi Simons, Joao Palhinha and Mohammed Kudus is a higher level than the club’s recent modern business, to be fair, perhaps indicating they are now buying at a different level.

“Kolo Muani is also viewed as particularly suited since he can pose an alternative to Dominic Solanke, but also play on the left.”

After a difficult period of high-profile rejections in the transfer window, Tottenham finally got back on track with an impressive finish to the summer to give Thomas Frank the tools to compete across multiple competitions.

When Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze did U-turns on moves to north London, Daniel Levy and co. were a laughing stock and Frank was left looking like he would not get in the quality of player needed for a return to the Champions League.

From: Kawasaki Frontale

Age: 20

Signed from J-League side Kawasaki Frontale back towards the start of the window, the centre-back penned a five-year deal and the plan was always to integrate him into Frank’s first-team squad.

Takai has won four caps for Japan’s senior side, making his international debut in a World Cup qualifier versus China last September and is very highly thought of in his homeland.

Unfortunately for the 20-year-old, a plantar fascia injury has ruled Takai out of action for a number of weeks, missing crucial time with Frank’s squad both in training and games as a result.

The fact remains that he is completely unproven at this level, no matter how highly he is thought of, and the proof will be in the pudding – if and when he gets on the pitch.

Transfer fee: £21m (€24m, $28m)

From: Lens

Age: 26

Spurs initially signed the Austrian centre-back on loan from Lens in February and saw enough to convince them to pull the trigger on a permanent deal as soon as the first part of the summer window opened.

The defender made 10 Premier League appearances last season and came on as a late substitute as Tottenham defeated Manchester United in the Europa League final.

In truth, Danso is a serviceable back-up for Cristian Romero and Micky can de Ven and also a useful asset when Frank switches to a back three – as he did against PSG in the Super Cup final.

Frank’s reliance on set-piece play also makes Danso a threat when he plays, with his rocket-launcher throw-ins causing danger for Tottenham.

Transfer fee: £30m (€34m, $40m)

From: Bayern Munich

Age: 20

The talented French forward joined Spurs on loan during the January transfer window with an option to buy him for £45m, but they successfully negotiated the fee down.

He made 20 appearances under Ange Postecoglou last season, scoring three goals, and was an unused substitute for the Europa League win.

Tel showed flashes of his talent last term but arguably didn’t do enough for Tottenham to snap him up on a permanent deal.

The transfer is clearly one that is based on the player’s massive potential, something Bayern clearly saw when they signed him from Rennes in 2022.

It just remains to be seen whether Tel will be given the time needed to showcase his talents in north London, or end up being moved on for half that price further down the line.

From: PSG

Age: 26

Tottenham’s big deadline day signing from PSG ticks plenty of boxes in terms of his pedigree and ability to play multiple forward positions for Frank.

However, there has to be some concern as to why neither Spurs or PSG decided not to insert an option or obligation to buy on the deal.

The fact that he is likely to only be in north London for one season is why the talented France international is further down the list than he probably should be, despite the fact that Kolo Muani could still be a big hit in the Tottenham attack.

He has the sort of pace and power that is missing from Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, and it will be interesting to see if Frank thrusts him straight into the No.9 role or plays him in the troublesome left-wing spot as he adjusts to the Premier League.

From: West Ham

Age: 25

The Ghana attacker made the controversial switch across the capital, becoming the first transfer between Spurs and the Hammers since Scott Parker in 2011, after the north London outfit secured a deal well below his £85m release clause.

Kudus made 65 Premier League appearances for West Ham, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists, and has made a bright start to his career in north London.

There were reports coming out of the London Stadium that the Hammers were happy to see the back of the player due to a reported attitude issue.

Tottenham should get the best out of Kudus by playing him in his favoured right-wing spot, something West Ham did not always do, while he can also fill in as a No.10 if required.

Transfer fee: £12m (€13.7m, $16m)

From: Hajduk Split

Age: 18

Tottenham fans will know exactly where we are coming from here, with Vuskovic a massive talent who will just get better and better with age.

Heralded as one of the best defensive talents in a generation, Vuskovic finally joined up with Spurs over the summer after spending last season on loan at Westerlo in Belgium to gain more first-team experience.

The 6ft 4in teenager has already made a name for himself as being a real threat from set-pieces and notched a goal and an assist in a pre-season win over Reading.

Vuskovic joined Hamburg on loan in the final days of the summer window as he takes the next step in his development, although many Tottenham supporters were keen on him staying around and providing back up fo a position where Frank is not exactly blessed.

Transfer fee: £51.8m (€60m, $69m)

From: RB Leipzig

Age: 22

In terms of overall ability, Simons would have been the No.1 pick and he fills a massive need for Tottenham after James Maddison was ruled out for likely the whole season with his ACL injury.

Simons is a magician on the ball and will provide goals and assists for Frank once he fully gets up to speed with the English game.

That has to be a slight concern, though, given that Simons struggled on the bigger stage at PSG and was not exactly pursued by a multitude of big clubs this summer when it was clear he was available for transfer.

A move to Chelsea looked on the cards for some time before Tottenham jumped in, and while Simons certainly has all the traits to be a world-class performer in north London, it’s now a matter of wait and see.

Transfer fee: Loan with £27m (€31m, $36m) option to buy

From: Bayern Munich

Age: 30

Potentially a bit controversial here, but Tottenham have been crying out for an elite No.6 since the days of the Mousa Dembele/Victor Wanyama engine-room tandem.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was a decent player but had his limitations, while Yves Bissouma has been a huge disappointment after his much-heralded arrival from Brighton.

Portugal star Palhinha showed in the games against PSG and Manchester City that he is made for contests against the big boys and has given the Tottenham defensive line that much-needed midfield shield.

Yes, he struggled in the shock loss to Bournemouth last weekend, but hardly any Spurs players came out of the game with any credit as the winning start to the Premier League campaign ended.

Palhinha is a quality performer who will provide so much for Frank’s side this season and, on the evidence so far, it would be a huge surprise if he doesn’t complete a bargain £27m move come the summer of 2026.

Tottenham finally have the new striker they’ve been hunting in the final weeks of the summer transfer window and TEAMtalk has taken a look at exactly what Randal Kolo Muani can offer and whether his move could eventually become permanent.

The France international has arrived on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain, subject to international clearance and work permit.

What Kolo Muani gives to Tottenham

A versatile attacker who can operate across the forward line, Kolo Muani made his professional debut for Nantes back in 2018.

Spending three seasons in the Ligue 1 side’s first team, he quickly grew into a key player for Les Canaris, scoring 23 goals for them while, in his final season, he helped them to the Coupe de France – Nantes’ first major honour in over 20 years.

His performances in his homeland earned him a switch to Germany and Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2022, where he ripped up the Bundesliga with 43 goal involvements in just 50 appearances for Die Adler.

Kolo Muani then helped PSG to two Ligue 1 titles before joining Juventus in the second half of last season, scoring eight goals in 16 Serie A outings.

The powerful attacker is a physical presence who will give Tottenham great pace through the middle and decent aerial ability. His style is completely different to current strikers Richarlison and Dominic Solanke, with the latter reportedly facing ankle surgery that could rule him out for two to three months.

Kolo Muani has spent the majority of his career playing through the middle but Frank can also utilise him out wide, especially after Tottenham failed to sign a replacement for Son Heung-min on the left wing this summer.

In terms of him signing permanently, it’s a worrying sign that Tottenham did not exercise a longer-term option to secure his future – something they regularly do with deals like this one.

It means Frank working with and hopefully improving a player who will not be at Spurs for the long-term.

To that end, it can only be hoped that Kolo Muani is true to his word and is indeed ready to give his all for a shirt that it’s highly unlikely that he will be wearing next season.

Tottenham could ditch a move for Ademola Lookman despite being given positive signs that they could land the Atalanta man, as another deal has taken precedence.

But TEAMtalk can now reveal that Tottenham are likely to walk away from the chase for Lookman.

They have struggled to get Atalanta to agree to the type of deal they would prefer – which was a loan with an option to buy.

There has been genuine interest in striking a deal here but in the past 24 hours it has become clear that a deal for a more central player like Randal Kolo Muani was more important than this one.

Kolo Muani deal done

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Kolo Muani will be joining Tottenham, and TEAMtalk had revealed that a move for a central striker could take precedence over Lookman.

The terms of the deal for Kolo Muani are favourable, as while Paris Saint-Germain wanted to insert an obligation for Tottenham to buy him, Spurs have managed to get him with just an option to buy after a year loan.

Lookman always looked to be tricky given Tottenham were hoping for that sort of deal whoever they got.

Days ago, Romano wrote: ‘Atalanta maintain their position for Ademola Lookman: no intention to let the player leave on loan with buy option.

‘Bayern, Tottenham, Italian clubs are all informed on permanent deal proposal needed or guaranteed obligation to buy.’

Tottenham round-up: Pavard contact made

It was reported that Tottenham had made contact with Inter Milan for the signing of Benjamin Pavard.

However, he is now said to be moving to Marseille instead.

Meanwhile, Spurs winger Manor Solomon is said to be attracting late interest from Crystal Palace.

And though Tottenham have been linked with Morgan Rogers, TEAMtalk is aware Aston Villa feel they have deterred sides from making bids for their star.

Tottenham have reportedly made contact over a late deadline deal to sign a World Cup-winning defender, while the club are also close to shipping out two fringe first-team players.

Spurs are already in the midst of a busy final day of the window, having already agreed to sign PSG attacker Randal Kolo Muani on loan to bolster Thomas Frank’s frontline.

The France international is being signed as a No.9 due to concerns that Dominic Solanke’s ankle injury could require surgery and rule him out for two to three months. However, he also has the ability to operate the wide areas too, giving Frank more options in his attack.

A proposed move for Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji is now dead after he agreed a deal to move to Inter Milan.

However, Akanji’s imminent arrival at the San Siro opens the door for Spurs to swoop for versatile Inter centre-back Benjamin Pavard, with CaughtOffside reporting that contact has already taken place between the two clubs.

The 29-year-old, who can play centre-back or right-back, is keen to ensure he plays regular first-team football ahead of the 2026 World Cup next summer and Akanji’s arrival threatens that.

Spurs are understood to be seriously stepping up efforts to sign Pavard, while he also has interest from the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona, and Marseille.

Pavard keen on Inter exit

Pavard is open to leaving Inter, and sources have suggested the Premier League could be a serious option for him.

One source told CaughtOffside: “Spurs have made official contact with Inter Milan to ask about Benjamin Pavard. They want to strengthen their squad and see Pavard as a good option. Inter have considered Pavard a sellable player since the start of the summer.”

There is no mention of what sort of fee Inter are asking for, with Pavard, who won the World Cup with France in 2018, still under contract until 2028 with the Serie A giants.

However, if Tottenham are able to get a late deal over the line for the Frenchman, he would provide quality competition for the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso at centre-back and also Pedro Porro at right-back – especially after the latter had a real stinker dealing with Antoine Semenyo on Saturday.

Two Tottenham exits take shape

Meanwhile, the second longest-serving player at Spurs, winger Bryan Gil, is poised to join Girona in an £8.6million (€10m).

The Spaniard is now set to undergo a medical and it is expected that the deal will go through before this evening’s deadline, which is set at 11pm BST for LaLiga clubs.

Gil has not featured in pre-season under Thomas Frank as he continued his recovery from a knee injury he suffered in March that ended his season prematurely.

Meanwhile, Manor Solomon, who did so well on loan at Leeds United last season, is attracting late interest from Crystal Palace.

Reports suggest that the deal is likely to be a loan switch, with the Eagles looking to add a second attacker on transfer deadline day, ahead of the impending arrival of Christantus Uche from Villarreal.

Tottenham courting more attackers

TEAMtalk have revealed interest in Kolo Muani alongside the pursuit of Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman.

Sources told insider Dean Jones that Tottenham have been given positive signs in regards to the potential snare of Lookman.

However, they have not yet committed to the chase as they might rather sign an out-and-out striker than someone like Lookman, who’s primarily a wide man who can play up top.

The fee for Lookman would be just over £43million, while it seems Kolo Muani would have to cost more than that, as Juventus tried to make their obligation to buy him the same fee and were turned down by PSG.

Tottenham have been linked with Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers of late, but TEAMtalk is aware that the Villans feel they’ve successfully deterred clubs from landing him.

That is one of the reasons Lookman has been courted by the north London club.

Meanwhile, after Yves Bissouma’s move to Galatasaray fell through, Tottenham insider John Wenham suggested it could be revived.

He referred to it as the “perfect move” for the midfielder, who’ll struggle for minutes if he remains in north London.

Aston Villa feel they have successfully deterred rival clubs including Tottenham Hotspur from making a late bid for star player Morgan Rogers, sources have revealed to TEAMtalk.

Tottenham were strongly considering making a move for the 23-year-old, who has also been admired by Chelsea and Arsenal in recent weeks. But Villa’s refusal to show any flexibility on their £80million-plus valuation has forced Spurs into second thoughts over whether to formalise their interest.

Instead, Tottenham switched focus last night amid a potential move for Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, who is keen on returning to the Premier League.

Chelsea have long been fans of the six-cap England international but have since signed Joao Pedro and agreed a deal with Brighton & Hove Albion for Facundo Buonanotte instead.

Spurs have already brought in Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig, beating Chelsea to his capture, while Arsenal won the race for Eberechi Eze.

Villa believe they will be successful in keeping Rogers, but the future of goalkeeper Emi Martinez is very uncertain.

Martinez has agreed personal terms with Manchester United and is keen to become their new No 1.

Lookman, 27, is desperate to leave Atalanta and saw a move to Inter Milan earlier this summer fall through.

His continued availability on the market has captured Tottenham’s attention at a time when other targets have been difficult to lure away this late in the window.

TEAMtalk understands that while initial explorations around the terms and conditions of a transfer were made last week, Spurs have now revisited Atalanta to discuss more details.

Sources say they have a list of seven names they are willing to pivot between as they insist on adding one more attacking figure to the front line before Monday evening’s 7pm deadline.

Savinho has been desperate to secure a move and has been the top target but Lookman is among the names they have begun to seriously consider.

As we have reported, Lucas Paqueta and Morgan Rogers are also among the names of interest.

Competition for West Ham’s Paqueta is coming by way of Aston Villa, though Paqueta strongly suggested he’s staying put when celebrating his goal in West Ham’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Spurs want to know by tonight whether the Lookman deal is one that can progress or if they remove him from the search.

However, Tottenham don’t have a deal all to themselves, with David Ornstein bringing news of Bayern Munich entering the frame with force on Sunday afternoon.

Bayern have proposed an initial loan for a ‘sizeable’ fee plus an option to buy at a ‘significant’ price.

Encouragingly for Spurs, a subsequent update from Fabrizio Romano insisted Atalanta don’t favour the type of deal Bayern have put forward.

“Atalanta maintain their position for Ademola Lookman: no intention to let the player leave on loan with buy option,” wrote Romano.

“Bayern, Tottenham, Italian clubs are all informed on permanent deal proposal needed or guaranteed obligation to buy.”

Reports earlier this summer pointed to a €50m valuation of Lookman when Atalanta were negotiating with Inter.

Lookman has often played in an advanced central role of late for Atalanta, though with Simons signing, he’d be expected to line up on the wings if moving to north London.
