Transfer news LIVE!

Arsenal are finally closing in on a deal to sign Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna after reports in Italy detailed an imminent agreement over a £42.1million deal. The move would follow the Gunners’ landing young goalkeeper Tommy Setford joined for less than £1m on the weekend.

One-time Arsenal target Martin Zubimendi is catching Manchester United’s eye as they look to add a midfielder to their signings of Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, while talks continue over Matthijs de Ligt. Manuel Ugarte is another target. At Chelsea, Aaron Anselmino and Caleb Wiley continue to edge closer to moves amid links with Ollie Watkins.

Latest transfer news and rumours

Liverpool target first Arne Slot signing

Liverpool have made Goncalo Inacio their top target for the summer.

Rather remarkably, Arne Slot still hasn’t made his first signing since arriving in the Anfield dugout with few serious targets being mooted.

But Sporting CP centre-back Inacio is tipped to be just that with the position a top priority after Joel Matip’s exit.

Correio da Manha name Inacio as leading Liverpool’s shortlist and his price is named at £37m.

Arsenal ponder player-plus-cash offer for Marc Guehi

Arsenal hope to knock down Crystal Palace’s demands for Marc Guehi by offering Eddie Nkeitah in a player-plus-cash deal.

The Star quote a £70m valuation on the centre-back, which Arsenal will struggle to pay unless they can sell several fringe players.

Nketiah has long been touted as one such man up for sale and Palace are interested in him.

But Guehi is a vital asset in their squad and a deal won’t be done quickly, with Manchester United and Liverpool also keen.

Al Ahli target Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison

Gabriel Jesus is wanted for a move to Saudi Arabia.

Al Ahli are tracking the Arsenal striker as well as Tottenham’s Richarlison, according to Al-Riyadiyah.

The Pro League team want a replacement for Allan Saint-Maximin, who recently joined Fenerbahce.

It remains to be seen if Jesus is available from Arsenal but Standard Sport reported earlier in the summer that Richarlison can leave Spurs for the right price.

Chelsea learn Ollie Watkins fee

Aston Villa will demand as much as £80m for Ollie Watkins this summer.

Under contract to 2028, the England striker is seen as unsellable amid Chelsea’s interest in a surprise deal.

The Blues reportedly want a new star forward but Football Insider say few clubs will be able to afford Watkins due to PSR.

Man Utd plot Martin Zubimendi hijack

Arsenal have been monitoring Martin Zubimendi for some time but Manchester United are ready to pounce on the Euro 2024 winner.

MEN name Zubimendi on a four-player shortlist to improve Erik ten Hag’s midfield.

Joining him is free agent Adrien Rabiot, who has left Juventus and is linked with a move to the Middle East.

Sofyan Amrabat is another option after his loan spell at United ended along with Manuel Ugarte, and talks with PSG are underway for the Uruguayan.

Arsenal close in on Riccardo Calafiori agreement

We are finally reaching the end game in Arsenal’s move for Riccardo Calafiori.

Sky Sport Italia report on an agreement for a £42.1m deal, which will include bonuses and a payment structure not yet fully agreed.

But it is claimed that Bologna have been holding out for the fee, indicating a compromise from Arsenal to get this long-running deal done.

Personal terms are not an issue and, as previously reported, the player’s old club Basel will get 50 per cent of the fee.

Juventus, Real Madrid and an unnamed Premier League team have all seen moves snubbed by Calafiori this month, it is reported, due to his determination to join the Gunners.

Christopher Nkunku offers Chelsea fitness update after injury-hit first season

Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku is “feeling better” ahead of his second season with the club.

The France international was limited to only two Premier League starts for the Blues during a turbulent campaign following a £53m move from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023.

Hearts vs Tottenham - LIVE!

Tottenham get their pre-season schedule fully up and running as they travel to take on Hearts this evening. Spurs beat Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Saturday, and now play in front of a crowd for the first time this summer as they build towards the new campaign.

This will be Ange Postecoglou’s second season in charge of the club, and the Australian will be desperate to make a strong start after a fairly disappointing final few months to end last season. Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League and will therefore be in the Europa League as they make their return to European football.

Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin will not be involved this evening, after their international involvement this summer, but there are plenty of first-team stars who are likely to play some part. Follow all the action with Standard Sport’s LIVE blog below!

Postecoglou for England

Reports this evening suggesting that Ange Postecoglou is on the FA’s list of targets as they look to appoint the next England manager.

The Telegraph report that the Tottenham boss is being considered as a possible replacement for Gareth Southgate.

Stage is set

Some actual blue sky at Tynecastle!

Spurs begin summer with big win

New signings Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray both played as Tottenham on Saturday kicked off their pre-season with a 7-2 win over Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

A first-half hat-trick from Brennan Johnson and a double from Heung-min Son, with by likes of Pedro Porro, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski and Manor Solomon also involved, had Spurs cruising at the break.

There was plenty of rotation from both teams, with manager Ange Postecoglou using two completely different teams in each half.

Teenagers Bergvall and Gray got their first minutes of the summer in the second half, the former in midfield alongside James Maddison and Oliver Skipp and supporting Timo Werner. Gray lined up at right-back.

With a few first-team stars still away on international duty, there were plenty of academy prospects on show, with Jamie Donley, Tyrese Hall, George Abbott, Luca Gunter, and Mikey Moore all believed to be involved.

REUTERS

Bergvall shirt number confirmed

Tottenham have handed Lucas Bergvall the No15 shirt ahead of his debut season with the club.

The 18-year-old Swede has officially joined Spurs after an £8.5million deal was struck for his signature in February with Djurgarden following his rapid rise in his home country.

And Spurs’ allocation of one of the more senior remaining squad numbers suggests Ange Postecoglou will hand Bergvall a serious chance in the first-team in 2024-25.

The last Tottenham player to wear the No15 was Eric Dier, who held the shirt for almost a decade.

Standard Sport prediction

The score is never important in these games, especially for a first run out of the summer, but it can usually provide plenty of goals.

Expect an entertaining game at Tynecastle Stadium, with plenty of players getting minutes under their belts.

Tottenham to win, 4-2.

Tottenham team news

Spurs gave plenty of players their first minutes of pre-season in a behind-closed-doors win over Cambridge on Saturday, including run outs for summer signings Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

Ange Postecoglou will have most of his first-team squad available, with just defensive trio Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin on international duty.

It remains to be seen if the likes of out-of-favour players Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon will join the travelling party.

Hearts team news

Hearts have signed Yan Dhanda, Blair Spittal, James Penrice, Daniel Oyegoke, Musa Drammeh and Ryan Fulton, and the new arrivals could be given minutes here.

The Argentine is well-known to the FA's technical director John McDermott, who was Tottenham's academy chief while Pochettino was in charge in north London, and understands the culture of the English national team, having produced a string of players for Southgate from his Spurs and Chelsea teams – most recently Cole Palmer.

Howe is one of the leading candidates to replace Gareth Southgate as England manager, with the 53-year-old having stepped down following the 2-1 defeat to Spain in Sunday’s Euro 2024 final.

The FA are understood to have identified the Newcastle boss as a contender, along with former Chelsea manager Graham Potter – who is thought to be keen on the job.

England U21 coach Lee Carsley, who led the Young Lions to glory in the Euros last summer, would likely be interviewed too.
