Tottenham are ‘increasingly confident’ that they will beat Man Utd to the signing of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils have already secured their first deal of the summer transfer window with Atalanta midfielder Ederson poised to move to Old Trafford when the World Cup finishes.

Man Utd are looking to sign at least one more, maybe two new midfielders, before the end of the summer window and Tottenham could now beat them to Fernandes.

The Red Devils had looked in pole position to win the race for Fernandes with Man Utd reportedly the first team to agree personal terms with the Portugal international.

Before rumours arose of interest from Tottenham with Roberto De Zerbi’s side apparently ready to match West Ham’s asking price for the midfielder.

And now our friends at TEAMtalk have revealed that Tottenham have made ‘significant progress’ in their attempts to sign Fernandes ahead of Man Utd.

TEAMtalk transfer insider Graeme Bailey adds: ‘Sources have confirmed that discussions with both Fernandes‘ camp and West Ham have accelerated over the past few days, leaving Spurs increasingly confident that they can win the race for one of the Premier League’s most sought-after midfielders.

‘As a result, we can reveal that Tottenham are now readying an offer worth around £75million (€87m, $99m), a figure that would move them very close to West Ham’s initial £80million valuation of the 21-year-old.’

It is claimed that Man Utd are still ‘confident’ in a potential deal too as they are hoping director of football Jason Wilcox, who played a big role in bringing Fernandes to English football during his time at Southampton, can help them get ahead in the race.

Romano: West Ham will sell Matheus Fernandes to the club offering the best money

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insists whoever bids the most will win the race to sign Fernandes from West Ham.

Romano said on his YouTube channel: “West Ham will sell Matheus Fernandes to the club offering the best money. So West Ham don’t care if it’s called Tottenham, Man United, Real Madrid, or whatever.

“Manchester United have been in talks with the agent of the player for a long time and have also had direct contact with West Ham. So Man United are working hard on this deal for Fernandes, and that remains my information—Man United are there.

“Tottenham are also there, because Tottenham are pushing in a separate story compared to Sandro Tonali. Tonali is still there, so Tottenham are working on it and Manchester United are working on it. Real Madrid—the name was indicated by José Mourinho, but at the moment it is still not advancing.

“But West Ham communicated to those close to the player: ‘Bring us the proposals. We start at £85 million.’ That’s the starting price. West Ham obviously hope to get more than this with so many clubs involved, and so the idea at West Ham is to get the best transfer fee possible for Fernandes. This is going to be the way to sign the player.

“Then obviously the player can have preferences—the player can have the opportunity of a very good contract on one side, and Champions League football on the other side—so every club can present their proposal and their project. But for West Ham, in a very clear way, it is ‘best offer wins.’ That’s what West Ham will do with Fernandes.”

Arsenal have made an attempt to beat Tottenham to the signing of Savinho by offering to take the Manchester City winger on loan, according to reports.

The Gunners are hoping to bring in a number of new faces in the summer transfer window as the Arsenal hierarchy look to back Mikel Arteta following a successful season.

Arsenal won the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years and boosted their finances significantly by reaching the Champions League final, where they lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Gunners have made it a priority to strengthen in attacking areas with wide positions a particular area they are looking to improve on.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Juventus’ Kenan Yildiz have been heavily linked, while they are closing in on a deal for Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga.

After losing the Champions League final to PSG, Arteta admitted that Arsenal are going to have to be “very ambitious” in the summer transfer market to push themselves to the next level.

Arteta said: “We start to make some very important decisions if we want to reach another level. And we’re going to have to show that ambition because we are more than capable of doing it, but it’s going to demand to be very, very ambitious, very fast and very smart.”

Shortly after, Fabrizio Romano revealed that fans could expect a “busy” summer for Aesenal as they target three or four players.

Romano revealed: “Arsenal are still very satisfied with what they did [in January], but in the summer they’re going to be busy.

“I think there could be three, four signings for Arsenal, also based on exits, but there will be movement up front. I already told you, winger is an absolute priority for Arsenal. A striker is a possibility, in midfield and at right-back.

“Arsenal have been searching for players since January already, that in January they didn’t find the right opportunity, and so they didn’t want to waste their money.”

And now long-term Tottenham target Savinho has emerged on the Gunners’ radar with RTI Esporte claiming that Arsenal ‘expressed interest in a loan’ move for the Man City winger.

However, talks with Man City ‘did not progress’ after Arsenal had their loan bid rejected and the Citizens ‘made it clear that they would only accept a permanent transfer for the player’.

Giving further details on Savinho’s future: ‘At this moment, Manchester City’s position is one of caution. The English club considers Savinho an important asset for the future, but admits the possibility of negotiation if an offer is deemed appropriate.

‘To release the striker permanently, Manchester City has set a price close to 50 million euros (R$ 294.1 million at the current exchange rate). The amount reflects the player’s projected growth and the investment made in his signing from Brazilian football.’

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Tottenham are about to make Martin Dubravka their fourth signing of the summer.

Tottenham have made huge progress in the summer transfer market already with three signings in the door before the start of July.

Spurs have secured deals for Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth respectively, while Jan Paul van Hecke joined from Brighton a transfer worth £52m.

Tottenham are looking to secure Roberto De Zerbi some early deals to make sure they don’t find themselves in relegation trouble again next season after avoiding the drop by two points last term.

And now Romano has revealed that former Burnley and Manchester United goalkeeper Dubravka will sign as he gave his famous ‘here we go’ confirmation to the deal.

Romano wrote on X: ‘Martin Dubravka to Tottenham, here we go! Deal agreed for former Burnley and Man United goalkeeper to join #THFC. Move completed today with Dubravka set to be backup GK at Spurs behind Kinski. Guglielmo Vicario to leave this summer.’

Giving more information on Vicario, Romano added: ‘Guglielmo Vicario, set to leave Tottenham with Italian clubs keen on the goalkeeper. Juventus are informed in case Aston Villa price for Dibu Martínez doesn’t drop. Napoli monitoring Vicario if they can sell a GK this summer, one of the names on the shortlist.’

Tonali and Savinho to be Spurs’ fifth and sixth signings?

Manchester City winger Savinho is another rumoured target for Tottenham as they look to strengthen their attack, while they are expected to make a second bid to Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali.

Reliable journalist Ben Jacobs said on Tottenham’s interest in Tonali after Newcastle rejected a £75m opening offer: “A fresh bid is expected. Manchester City remain active as well. Spurs want to make a statement signing with Roberto De Zerbi stressing the importance of adding in central midfield.”

Romano also added last week: “Tottenham entered the race strong to sign Sandro Tonali and Sandro Tonali is open to joining Tottenham. Tottenham are real contenders to sign Sandro Tonali, Tottenham are strong contenders for Sandro Tonali and Tottenham are very serious.

“It’s a bid, it was sent three days ago. Tottenham sent an official bid, £75million, rejected by Newcastle, they want more. The first bid is never getting accepted, it’s normal and common knowledge in football that when you want to negotiate for a top player with a big transfer fee that the first bid never gets accepted.

“It’s part of the plan, because for Tottenham it was the message sent to the player and to Newcastle as well, but especially the player, to show that they are serious.

“It’s not the bid we need to talk about now, Tottenham remain in conversations with those close to Tonali and Tottenham remain in conversations to make a new bid. Tottenham are there and working for Tonali, they are working very hard and very strong to get Sandro Tonali.”

Former Tottenham scout Bryan King has told Tottenham the “only reason” Marcus Rashford will join the club this summer is a big payday.

Spurs have already sorted their defence this summer, with moves for Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke. They are now looking further up the field, with midfielders and attackers in mind.

Rashford has come onto their radar, after Barcelona let their £26million option to buy slip away, and reports subsequently emerged that the forward has a £40million release clause for everybody expect Manchester City and Liverpool.

Tottenham are believed to be preparing a move for the England forward, and while it’s said they don’t want to pay the release, it’s money that could get them Rashford.

Former Spurs scout King told Tottenham News: “I think he would be a better signing than what they’ve got.

“If he goes back to Barcelona he gets Champions League and the same with Manchester United. If he wants to get out of Man United, I’m surprised Barcelona haven’t signed him permanently.

“The only reason he would go to Tottenham at this stage is for the money.”

Barcelona move looks unlikely

Rashford has maintained a desire to head back to Barcelona, but after they signed Anthony Gordon for £70million, his spot seems to have gone.

But even since that move was made, he’s continued to look favourably on a return to the Nou Camp, and it’s therefore not clear if he’d accept a move elsewhere.

As King suggests, United have Champions League football, so staying there would not be the worst shout, and some reports have suggested that Michael Carrick is willing to bring Rashford back from the wilderness.

But from the board’s point of view, the winger is clearly worth selling, and wages of around £300,000 per week are not something they want to continue paying.

Whether Spurs would pay that could fairly be questioned, given it’s said they don’t even want to pay the £40million which would gift them the chance to negotiate with Rashford.

Some reports have also suggested that the United man would drop his wage demands for the right move, but it seems at the moment that the only move he sees as right is one back to Barcelona, where last season he notched 28 direct goal contributions.

But Man Utd are still looking for one, possibly two more midfielders, as well as a left-back and left-winger as priority before potentially moving on to other positions.

It has been clear in recent weeks that Man Utd have made Fernandes their top target with a deal for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson becoming too expensive.

There are widespread reports indicating that Man Utd have already agreed personal terms with Fernandes ahead of a potential summer move.

Romano has revealed that Man Utd and Tottenham are both pushing to sign Fernandes but that West Ham are only interested in money.

Tottenham are willing to pay West Ham’s price for Man Utd target Fernandes

And that information from Romano could be a bad thing for Man Utd, as the Daily Mail claim that Tottenham have indicated that they are ‘prepared to meet the £85m asking price’ with some doubt as to whether the Red Devils want to bid that high.

The report adds: ‘They remain in talks with the Hammers without yet making a formal bid, but it’s been clear for some time that the player’s personal terms would not be an obstacle.

‘Bournemouth’s Alex Scott could be one of the first options United turn to if they cannot sign Fernandes, although he would be a cheaper alternative – and so would his team-mate Tyler Adams, who has admirers at Old Trafford.’

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero has reportedly told Tottenham he ‘wants to stay’ despite looking almost certain to leave – but it might be too late.

Romero has been a central part of Spurs’ side for all of his five years there. While injuries and suspensions have scuppered the Argentine and frustrated those connected with the club, when he’s there, he’s a great defender whose passion is evident.

That passion appeared to have waned at the back end of the season, when Romero returned to Argentina to watch his former club rather than watch the last game of Tottenham’s season – that decision was reversed, and he was in the building as they beat Everton to stay in the Premier League.

But it seemed to be a sign that he wanted to leave, and amid interest, namely from Atletico Madrid, it’s looked likely that he’s going to leave.

But SportsBoom now reports Romero has told Tottenham he ‘wants to stay’ in order to drive the club’s revival after a poor campaign.

The outlet refers to the decision as a ‘shock change of heart’ with club chiefs made aware that the Argentine is ‘happy’ to remain in north London.

Indeed, his preference is now to remain there, though he wants assurances over the club’s direction.

Those include guarantees on the long-term vision and recruitment plans, with a rebuild on the cards.

Romero wants to lead by example as Tottenham head in a new direction, wanting to ‘remain at the heart’ of the project.

It may be too late for Romero

But the direction that the club is going could be away from Romero, and after his actions and the reports that have come out, it would be hard to begrudge them that.

The Argentine hasn’t shown commitment to his side, and they have already begun to shape their defence in a different way.

Of last season’s preferred centre-back partnership of Romero and Micky van de Ven, though both have some big clubs interested in them, it’s long been suggested that the latter wants to stay and will indeed be doing so.

He is now joined in the defence by Marcos Senesi and £52million signing Jan Paul van Hecke, both of whom had good Premier League seasons last term.

That’s three top-quality centre-backs, alongside options such as Kevin Danso and Radu Dragusin.

Romero’s decision might have come too late, with the new boys surely expecting large roles and having joined the club for those.

Having already signed one player from former club Brighton this summer, Roberto De Zerbi is looking for more, with ‘a list of candidates’ revealed by a top source.

De Zerbi has made a fast start rectifying an underwhelming squad for his first, expectedly, full season in north London. Three signing have walked through the door: Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke.

The Tottenham boss has worked with Van Hecke up close, when the pair were both at Brighton.

The Dutch defender joins from the Seagulls, and if De Zerbi gets his way, Spurs could raid their manager’s former club once more this summer.

Indeed, The Athletic reports goalkeeper Jason Steele is on a list of candidates to potentially become the reserve goalkeeper in north London.

He is seen as a good option, having previously worked with De Zerbi at Brighton.

Steele played 43 games under the Italian boss across two seasons – the most of any goalkeeper during his time there, though De Zerbi did sign Bart Verbruggen, who’s become the No.1.

There have also been links between Spurs and Verbruggen, while Seagulls midfielder Carlos Baleba has also been identified as a player of interest at Tottenham this summer.

Tottenham have a choice in net

Who is going to be the first-choice goalkeeper for Spurs this season remains to be seen. There have been suggestions that Antonin Kinsky is going to keep his place at the club, but Guglielmo Vicario will leave.

It’s also been reported that Tottenham want to sign a first-choice goalkeeper, with it not thought Kinsky will remain in the role he played for the final seven games of the season – all under De Zerbi.

Lucas Chevalier is one of the names mentioned as a potential new No.1 and if Vicario is indeed to leave, with interest reported across Italy, it feels likely that a quality new stopped will walk through the door.

How Tottenham are going to finance all of their deals this summer remains to be seen, though. They’ve already parted with north of £50million for Van Hecke, and have eyes on £100million-rated Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, who’ll command a fee over £80million.

An ex-Tottenham scout has “no love” for an attacker who needs to be sold this summer, and feels his manager has “realised what he’s like.”

Spurs were one of the worst sides in the Premier League last season. That they survived on the very last shows how poor they had been prior to that point.

There was hardly an area of the squad which impressed for long, but the attackers were particularly poor, with only Richarlison reaching double figures.

But for Bryan King, who was formerly a scout at the north London club, the Brazilian has to go, and there’s a reason he’s not at the World Cup this summer.

He told Tottenham News: “I’ve got no love for Richarlison. He wasn’t good enough to go to the World Cup and I think [Carlo] Ancelotti has realised what he’s like.

“Tottenham have to get him out, I would have had him gone last summer. He doesn’t look right at Tottenham and if they want to bring in a striker of quality, they have to get rid.

“They aren’t going to get their money back on him, that’s for sure.”

Tottenham are indeed looking at strikers, though it doesn’t appear to be the priority, with midfield men Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes high on the agenda after the defence was sorted.

But there remain links with Igor Thiago, who scored 22 goals in a de facto debut Premier League season with Brentford.

Thiago did make the Brazil World Cup squad that Richarlison did not, so would evidently be an upgrade on his compatriot.

But he’s believed to be worth £69million in Brentford’s eyes, and Richarlison, with only a year left on his deal and no huge body of work behind him with Spurs, will not be sold for that.

If a move is to take place for Thiago, it will not be funded by the sale of his fellow Brazilian.

Our friends at TEAMtalk have linked Richarlison with his former side Everton, though there is no suggestion from sources on how much the Toffees would be willing to pay to bring him back to the club after four seasons away with Spurs.

Man Utd could be beaten to the signing of top midfield target Mateus Fernandes as he reportedly favours a move to Tottenham this summer.

After performing well for West Ham last season, despite the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship, Fernandes is being courted by several clubs.

Man Utd, Tottenham and Real Madrid have so far showed the strongest interest, although none of them have officially submitted an offer to West Ham.

The Red Devils had seemed nailed on to sign Fernandes this summer before rumours emerged that Spurs are ‘ready to offer’ a huge amount to get the Portugal international to move to north London.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira recently insisted that Tottenham are willing to pay £70m for the West Ham star and that Man Utd and Real Madrid were also still in the race to sign Fernandes.

Schira wrote on X: ‘Excl. – #Tottenham are ready to offer 70M to #WestHam to try to sign #MatheusFernandes, who is still a target of #ManchesterUnited and #RealMadrid. Race ongoing. #transfers #THFC #WHUFC.’

Before transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel: “According to my information, Tottenham are talking to the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and they are pushing in order to reach an agreement with the player – but still nothing guaranteed, still nothing closed.

“What’s going to happen is that there will be more conversations with Tottenham, and more conversations with Manchester United, because don’t forget that Manchester United are working very, very hard on this deal. Manchester United are working hard on the club side with West Ham — they’ve already spoken about Matheus Fernandes — and they are also working on the player side with his agent. So Man United are still very much in the picture…”

And now Schira is back on Tuesday to claim that Tottenham have now overtaken Man Utd in the race to sign Fernandes from West Ham.

Schira wrote on X: ‘Excl. – #Tottenham are pushing to sign #MatheusFernandes, who has given his availability for a contract until 2031 + option for 2032. #THFC are now in talks with #WestHam to try to close the deal overtaking #ManchesterUnited, which are very interested in him. #transfers #THFC.’

Real Madrid pull plug as Fernandes ‘prefers’ Tottenham

Spanish newspaper AS claimed earlier in the day that Real Madrid have now pulled the plug on their interest in signing Fernandes as the midfielder ‘prefers to go to Tottenham’ this summer.

Real Madrid have instead ‘already set in motion negotiations’ to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez instead as they look to satisfy Jose Mourinho.

Former Man Utd defender Gary Neville reckons Germany international Felix Nmecha could be a better option at a lower price for the Red Devils if they give up on Fernandes.

Neville said on ITV Sport: “The more he plays like he did the other night the more expensive he’ll get.

“But at the moment, we hear Manchester United are being quoted £100 million for the West Ham boy Fernandes, so they’re going to have to be looking around this tournament and parts of Europe.

“He looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything.”

Tottenham Hotspur are actively trying to sign Cody Gakpo and Franco Mastantuono from Liverpool and Real Madrid, respectively, according to reports, as Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi plans to make as many as eight new additions to his squad.

Spurs have already made three major signings so far in the summer transfer window, with Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke all joining the north London club.

Tottenham are not going to stop there, though, with manager De Zerbi determined to get the team back to competing for the Champions League places in the Premier League table next season.

The Italian manager wants to enhance Tottenham’s attack, with Liverpool winger Gakpo and Madrid star Mastantuono now on the north London club’s radar.

Tottenham are already in talks with Liverpool over Gakpo, who could leave the Reds this summer.

Why De Zerbi wants Cody Gakpo at Tottenham

According to TuttoSport, De Zerbi is personally keen on a summer deal for the Netherlands international winger, who is starring at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.

While claiming that ‘Tottenham have eight signings lined up’, the Italian publication has reported: ‘De Zerbi would like to sign striker Cody Gakpo, who risks losing his focus in Liverpool’s new project led by Iraola.

‘That’s why the first phone calls have already been made from London in an attempt to secure him.

‘In De Zerbi’s 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, the Dutchman would be perfect as an attacking winger on the left flank.

‘The same position he plays for Ronald Koeman’s national team: allowing him to target hapless defenders with his deadly runs, but also to cut back to shoot with his preferred foot (the right).’

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, though, has said that Liverpool have not made a final decision on Gakpo’s future.

Romano said on his YouTube channel on Monday evening: “There is an appreciation from Tottenham for Cody Gakpo.

“That’s true. He is one of the players they appreciate.

“I told you in a video I think here a few weeks ago that the situation on Gakpo was moving because there are clubs interested.

“But this story about Cody Gakpo completely depends on what Liverpool want to do.

“Liverpool are yet to decide anything.

“At the moment, (Liverpool) are not opening doors to his exit.

“Also, very happy with his performances at the World Cup, so Liverpool, the club, together with a new coach, Andoni Iraola, they will be deciding together about Gakpo and will make a plan to decide about Cody Gakpo.

“At the moment, the doors are not open, so Liverpool are not negotiating for an exit of Gakpo.

“There is interest from Tottenham, but waiting to understand what Liverpool will decide to do for the Dutch winger.”

Gakpo joined Liverpool from PSV in January 2023 for a fee up to €50million (£43m).

Tottenham also interested in Franco Mastantuono

Sport has reported Tottenham’s desire to sign Mastantuono, too.

The Barcelona-leaning Catalan publication has reported that new Madrid manager Jose Mourinho ‘does not count on’ ‘Mastantuono ‘in his new project and has made this clear to’ his bosses at Estadio Bernabeu.

The report has revealed: ‘Real Madrid leaked their idea and began receiving calls from interested clubs willing to accept a loan.

‘His agency, Area Sport Team, headed by Augusto Fernandez, also started looking for destinations.’

Madrid’s ‘conditions’ are a two-year loan deal for Mastantuono, with the signing club to pay half of his salary.

Tottenham are among the clubs interested in the Argentina international, who can play as an attacking midfielder or as a winger.
