Postecoglou sack incoming? Angeball abandoned as Liverpool thrash Spurs to reach Carabao final

Fair to say it’s a drum we’ve been banging for quite some time, but Ange Postecoglou really could now be one game from the sack. He can’t say he hasn’t been warned.

The cup runs and injury crisis have been the two saving graces for Postecoglou but there was little mitigation to be found here in the meek and, frankl,y gutless way in which Spurs’ hitherto heartening Carabao Cup campaign ended with not even a whimper.

There is no shame in going out at this stage to a Liverpool side this good, especially after a run that has included wins over both Manchester clubs. But the manner of this second-leg capitulation has pushed Postecoglou to the brink. The very real and present danger now is that Spurs will go out of both domestic cups in the space of four days, and very possibly without landing a blow in anger.

Aston Villa away is not a kind FA Cup fourth-round draw, and it’s so hard to see how Postecoglou can lift his players – and indeed himself – after this painful humiliation. But he must.

For the second time this season, Liverpool battered Spurs into submission. For the second time this season a thumping scoreline nevertheless flattered a broken and humbled Spurs, who somehow remained technically level in this tie at half-time in the second leg. But it never, ever felt like that. A 4-0 Liverpool win on the night for a 4-1 aggregate success still told only some of the story.

What really hurts Postecoglou here, though, is this was a night to completely explode what remains of the myths around this team. Spurs aren’t even just who they are, mate. Not any more. They didn’t lose this game 4-0 by going toe-to-toe with a superior side. This was a team set up to try and low-block-and-counter its way to somehow preserving the one-goal lead with which they arrived. And getting battered anyway.

It was a plan that never ever looked like it might work. It was, in its own way, every bit as naive as the infamous 0-7-1 against Chelsea or any of the rest of Postecoglou’s more macho bits of posturing, performative over-attacking nonsense.

The temptation will be to try and present this as some kind of gotcha for his critics. ‘See? You wanted him to show adaptability – he did, and they still got spanked.’ But that’s to miss the point. There exists a fairly sizeable middle-ground between kamikaze gung-ho attack, attack, attack and timid, gutless defend, defend, defend.

If you want a near flawless example of it, you need only look at Tottenham’s opposition here. Spurs aren’t as good as Liverpool, obviously, but there really isn’t a compelling reason why they can’t play football in at least something approaching this fashion, with attacks full of verve and menace and importantly numbers, that don’t leave the back door wide open.

Spurs currently both attack and defend like a team that has been reduced to 10 men. There’s almost something impressive about the ability to appear outnumbered in every part of the pitch, in possession and out. It was even the case for large swathes of the win at Brentford last week.

Postecoglou’s defenders will point also to the catastrophic individual mistakes his players made tonight. They will be right; Spurs were truly horrible in possession here. All too often the second touch was a tackle and sometimes not even that.

But those individual errors do not exist in a vacuum. The deeply negative system Postecoglou deployed and subsequent the lack of runners, the lack of energy and apparently also desire and belief that spread throughout the team is going to lead to error-strewn performances. Especially against a team like Liverpool.

Simply put, Postecoglou can no more avoid all responsibility for those errors than he can the injury crisis. When you are hit by that many misfortunes, it really can’t all just be bad luck.

Spurs started the game nominally in a 4-3-3 but in practice it was a 5-4-1 when Spurs were out of possession, and they were out of possession a lot. And if they weren’t out of possession, you could be confident they soon would be.

Liverpool, meanwhile, were everything Spurs were not. The gulf between these two clubs has been growing for years now but even on previous one-sided evenings it has never appeared quite so wide as here.

Arne Slot’s side were focused, slick, confident and determined. They were strong in the tackle, crisp in the pass, and pressed Spurs relentlessly knowing the mistakes would come but surely surprising even themselves with the frequency and ease with which they were generated.

What was somehow Liverpool’s only goal of a comically one-sided first half came from one such moment, Yves Bissouma casually and carelessly giving the ball away and seconds later Cody Gakpo was continuing his fine recent form with a precise first-time finish.

Still Spurs did nothing. Even at their worst last season and for good chunks of this they have remained a front-foot team. At its best, Angeball works as a philosophy rather than a tactical plan. It’s possible to defend positively on the front foot. Even here, there were glimpses of that from Spurs’ full-backs Archie Gray and Djed Spence. But for the rest, either body, mind or both was unwilling.

It was a sorry sight. There would be no criticism for Spurs in getting outplayed at Anfield. But there is in appearing so much less enthusiastic for the task. This was a far, far bigger game in the context of Spurs’ season than it was in Liverpool’s. You would never have guessed it from the way the two teams set about the task.

Spurs were simply overwhelmed in a second half that bordered on the embarrassing at times. One wonders what Mathys Tel made of it all from his isolated vantage point up front. He’ll certainly have had plenty of time to think about things, and wonder if maybe his first thought wasn’t in fact the right one after all.

As Liverpool’s quadruple bid carries relentlessly on, Spurs look utterly lost. They surely can’t set up like this again at Villa Park on Sunday, but even a belated return to some of Angeball’s supposed core values might well now be too little, too late.

But surely if Postecoglou is going to go down he’ll at least want to go down his way and on his terms. At least go to Villa and have a bit of a go. At least get the sack for playing his football badly rather than playing this grim passionless, nihilistic Mourinho-lite dreck, also badly.

Say what you will about tenets of Angeball, but at least it was an ethos.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has not been included in Arne Slot’s squad for Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham.

Slot surprised Liverpool fans with his team selection as the Reds look to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg last month.

The Reds fell to a surprise defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but remain strong favourites to advance to the final of the Carabao Cup.

Whoever progresses to the final at Wembley will face Newcastle United after their spectacular 4-0 aggregate victory over Arsenal.

Slot handed starts to Darwin Nunez, Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley and Caoimhin Kelleher for the second leg at Anfield.

No. 1 goalkeeper Alisson has not been included in the squad, but any fears were quickly alleviated by Liverpool journalist James Pearce.

Pearce says the Brazilian has been rested and does not have an injury. He wrote on social media: ‘Alisson just rested tonight, no fitness worries’.

Dropping Alisson to the bench would not have been surprising given it is a cup match, but his omission altogether did ring alarm bells.

Mathys Tel was named on the bench by Ange Postecoglou and could make his Spurs debut after signing from Bayern Munich on deadline day.

Fellow new signing Kevin Danso was named in the starting XI and partners Ben Davies at centre-back.

Full Liverpool starting XI v Spurs: Caoimhin Kelleher; Conor Bradley, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson; Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai; Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Cody Gakpo

Spurs XI: Antonin Kinsky; Archie Gray, Kevin Danso, Ben Davies, Djed Spence; Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr; Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, Heung-min Son

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has been tipped to reject a return to Tottenham Hotspur, while Paul Merson reckons Arsenal “will buy him”.

The England international left boyhood club Spurs to join Bayern Munich during the 2023 summer transfer window for around £86m.

Kane departed Tottenham to give himself a better chance of winning team trophies and he’s on track to lift the Bundesliga this term after Bayern Munich missed out on the title last season.

Despite this, the 31-year-old has consistently been linked with a return to the Premier League over the past couple of months and it’s emerged that there is a ‘secret clause agreement’ in his Bayern Munich contract.

This enabled him to leave for around £66m in January or around £54m during the 2026 winter transfer window.

READ: Manchester United, Spurs and Man City shamed by transfer efficiency ranking

Tottenham – according to The Telegraph – have a ‘first option agreement’ with Bayern Munich, but this depends on two conditions.

‘Telegraph Sport understands that there is a release clause in Kane’s Bayern contract, even though he is said to be extremely happy in Germany and has no thoughts of activating it any time soon. Premier League clubs are already aware of the existence of Kane’s release clause, which could be crucial to a potential return to England.

‘Kane moved to Bayern on a four-year contract for £100m in August 2023, with Tottenham also securing a first option agreement as part of the transfer. That would only be applicable should Bayern agree to sell Kane and the striker wanted to return to Spurs, where he spent 13 years and became the club’s all-time highest scorer.

‘There is no fixed fee in Tottenham’s first-option agreement, meaning the club would still have to trigger his release clause or negotiate a price with Bayern for Kane.

‘Should a rival club ever trigger his Bayern release clause, Tottenham would have to decide whether or not to match the bid and hope the 31-year-old preferred a return to North London.’

Arsenal are known to be in the market for a striker. Merson has explained why his former club could sign Kane and why he may reject a return to Spurs.

“Arsenal will buy him,” Merson lightheartedly said on Sky Sports.

When asked whether he was serious, he added: “Why not? £64m, why not? Sol Campbell did [make the move].

“People will go ‘Oh he’s this age and that age’ but Arsenal need now.”

He continued: “If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven.

“I wouldn’t be surprised, and when you’re Harry Kane and you’ve been told you can go for £64m, there’s only a couple of teams who could buy him.

“Maybe Tottenham will buy him back but he’ll have to win something at Bayern Munich to go back to Tottenham. If you’ve not won anything at Bayern Munich, you’re not going back to Tottenham to win nothing.”

Tottenham Hotspur reportedly have a ‘first option agreement’ with Bayern Munich which could push through Harry Kane’s return to the Premier League.

Kane is one of the best strikers in Premier League history as he’s scored 213 goals in his 317 appearances in English’s top division for boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur.

During the 2023 summer transfer window, the 31-year-old left Spurs as he looked to end his long wait for a team trophy.

After being linked with several Premier League rivals, Kane joined Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for around £86m.

The 2023/24 campaign was disastrous for Bayern Munich as they failed to win a trophy, but they are currently six points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga.

Kane has 70 goals in 72 appearances for Bayern Munich, but he’s been sporadically linked with a potential return to the Premier League over the past couple of years.

Earlier this week, a report from German outletSport BILD revealed Kane has a ‘secret clause agreement’ in his Bayern Munich, which enabled him to leave last month or during the 2026 January transfer window if he wants to ‘return to England’.

The report explains:

‘The striker would have had to pull the clause during the winter transfer window and would then have been allowed to move for an estimated sum of 80 million euros (£66.5m).

‘However: The clause will be valid again next winter, then for a transfer for summer 2026.

‘The transfer fee that FC Bayern would receive in this case should then only be an estimated 65 million euros (£54m). When the contract ends in the summer of 2027, the striker would then be free of charge.’

Description

Ange Postecoglou has hit out at suggestions that Mathys Tel initially rejected Spurs and revealed an injury blow before Thursday’s match vs Liverpool.

It was reported that the teenager initially rejected a move to Spurs after the North London outfit had a bid worth around £60m accepted by the Bundesliga giants.

However, Tel was persuaded to perform a U-turn after having a “conversation” with head coach Postecoglou. He could debut on Thursday night when Spurs face Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final with his new side leading 1-0 on aggregate.

Postecoglou has explained the Tel situation, claiming he “just wanted to be comfortable with his decision”.

“I think people need to understand that you are talking about a 19-year-old who has to make a major decision for his career and it’s not that he rejected us or rejected anyone else – I think he just wanted to be comfortable with his decision. I don’t think he wanted to be pushed in a certain direction and it’s credit to him,” Postecoglou said.

“I had a conversation with him and it was purely around the football and I think he’ll find a really good place for him here. Irrespective of age he will get an opportunity here.

“The way we play I think will suit him and what we are building beyond – I thought this would be the perfect fit for his next step. I think it’s right that he took time in his decision.”

He continued: “I am more than 100% sure that he wants to be here.

“He was so diligent when he made the decision that it gave me even more confidence that we were getting the right kind of mentality and player. He is very ambitious. He has a great deal of self belief and confidence and it feels like he can reach the very top of the game.”

Postecoglou has also revealed that they will be without Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero for the Liverpool match.

“In terms of availability, everyone is fine from last week so no issues there. Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel are both available, they have trained,” Postecoglou revealed.

“With Micky [van de Ven] and [Cristian] Romero to a certain extent, I kind of feel we have to be a bit more conservative with them.

“Micky got through the game [vs Elfsborg] alright but I don’t think he feels ready for Premier League intensity and that’s the same with Cristian.

“We are going to keep them ticking over in training and make sure they are absolutely ready with no set-backs.”

He added: “Kevin Danso will play. Whether he starts or not we will have a look because we have another game in three days.

“Pedro [Porro] has played every minute of football we’ve had for the last three months. It’s great to get Kevin in but whether he will start or come on, we will make a decision. Having him available as an option is good.”

Tottenham news: Spurs 'won't give up' on star centre

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown feels Spurs “won’t give up” on trying to get Marc Guehi through the door, as he explained why a summer offer has a better chance of success than their January approach.

Spurs made a last-gasp attempt to sign Crystal Palace defender Guehi in January. They had already signed Kevin Danso on an initial loan, but been turned down by Fikayo Tomori and Axel Disasi, and seen Radu Dragusin sidelined for probably the rest of the season.

Palace rejected the late bid, but Fabrizio Romano stated the interest would run to the summer.

Supporting that, former Tottenham scout Brown reckons the club will be back in then, and Palace have more chance of accepting given the timing.

“I expect they’ll revisit that offer in the summer, they won’t give up,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Guehi is a wanted man, Newcastle wanted him last summer and now Tottenham are after him. Tottenham need a centre-back and he’s the ideal option there.

“He’s as stable as there is at the back, he’s a regular starter for England now, and he can go under the radar at times at Crystal Palace. He plays at a solid level every week and is consistently impressive, so a few clubs have been looking at him.

“Palace rejected their offer not because of the fee but because of the timing of it, which I understand completely, it’s a perfectly reasonable stance for them to take.

“But in the summer, that could change, and I think Tottenham will come back in with a new offer.”

It’s felt Guehi could transform the way Spurs play, with Ally McCoist of the opinion that Ange Postecoglou could change the shape of the defence to cater to his talents along with those already in the back line.

“I thought that would be a great signing in respect to, I would change Tottenham’s shape if they signed Guehi and I played the three centre-backs with two wider boys,” McCoist said.

“And it would have probably suited Ange in the way he plays.”

That would rest on the hopes that three centre-backs were all fit at one time. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are the preferred starters, but both have missed much of this season.

Tottenham legend Harry Kane 'secures' shock 'secret clause agreement' for 'return to England' with bargain fee

Description

Harry Kane has reportedly ‘secured’ a transfer clause which would enable the Tottenham Hotspur legend to leave Bayern Munich and ‘return to England’.

Kane established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe at Tottenham, scoring 280 goals in his 435 appearances for his boyhood club.

At Spurs, Kane endured a prolonged wait to win team trophies and pursued an exit during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Kane had entered the final year of his last Tottenham contract, so he was available for an affordable price. Bayern Munich fended off competition from Premier League sides to sign the England international for around £86m.

The 31-year-old missed out on a trophy in his first season at Bayern Munich, but they have marched clear at the top of the Bundesliga this term. He has 70 goals in his 72 appearances for Vincent Kompany’s side.

Kane has been sporadically linked with a move back to the Premier League over the past 18 months. A report from German outlet Sport BILD claims he has ‘secured’ a transfer clause in his Bayern Munich contract, which expires in 2027.

Regarding the ‘secret agreement’ with this clause, which is only active in winter transfer windows, the report explains:

‘The striker would have had to pull the clause during the winter transfer window and would then have been allowed to move for an estimated sum of 80 million euros (£66.5m).

‘However: The clause will be valid again next winter, then for a transfer for summer 2026. The transfer fee that FC Bayern would receive in this case should then only be an estimated 65 million euros (£54m). When the contract ends in the summer of 2027, the striker would then be free of charge.’

This clause is in place should Kane want to pursue a ‘return to England’ and the report also mentions two potential replacements ‘discussed internally’ at Bayern Munich.

‘For Kane, making use of his clause was never an issue in his second Bundesliga season. The captain of the English national team feels very comfortable in Munich both in terms of football and in his private life with his family.

‘The clause offers Kane the opportunity to move beyond just England. He could also move to the USA at the end of his career.

‘Regardless of the fact that FC Bayern will continue to rely on Kane next season, who will turn 32 in July, the club is looking for a successor for the future.

‘Names like Benjamin Sesko (21/RB Leipzig) and Viktor Gyökeres (26/Sporting) were discussed internally.

‘Both would cost a high transfer fee of around 70 million euros, but would receive significantly less salary than Kane, who already came to Bayern as a top star and earns an estimated 25 million euros a year.’

Ally McCoist feels the signing of Marc Guehi would have had a big impact at Tottenham and would “probably have suited” the system of manager Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs tried their hand at signing a few players at the back end of the January window. Mathys Tel rejected them with days to go, but came around on the project on deadline day, signing on loan.

At the other end of the pitch, Tottenham were turned down by centre-backs Fikayo Tomori and Axel Disasi, and ended up signing Kevin Danso on loan, but also made an attempt for England international Guehi.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed the bid for the Crystal Palace man, and how it had been rejected.

But had they landed him, McCoist feels Guehi could have been transformative to the way Spurs play.

“I thought that would be a great signing in respect to, I would change Tottenham’s shape if they signed Guehi and I played the three centre-backs with two wider boys,” he said on talkSPORT.

“And it would have probably suited Ange in the way he plays.”

At the moment, Spurs play with two centre-backs, and given injuries the main pairing has been Radu Dragusin and Archie Gray this term – the latter a right-back or central-midfielder.

But when Cristian Romero is back fit, and Micky van de Ven fully returns to action, if Guehi were also in the centre-back corps, it would seemingly be tough, on paper, to pick the best two out of those three.

That could indeed see all three picked. The last time Tottenham played a back-three formation – against Everton on January 19 – they lost 3-2, though the trio was not to the level of Romero, Van de Ven and Guehi.

At the moment, it is immaterial, as the Palace man did not join, but Romano did state his transfer could open up again in the summer.

Though there is likely to be interest from a number of other Premier League big boys, Spurs, after making an attempt in January, could well be there again.

Tottenham transfers: Shocking Mathys Tel loan details revealed after Spurs seal deadline day signing

Description

Reports from Germany have confirmed that Tottenham have agreed to an largely expensive loan deal after signing Mathys Tel.

Tottenham have been in dogged form all season, losing 13 times in the league and they currently sit 14th in the league table after a difficult spell.

Whereas Tel was brought in to provide a boost in the final third, they’ve scored the fourth-most goals in the league but shipped the eighth-most goals at the back.

Defensive additions were needed with the injuries suffered by both Cristian Romero and Micky van den Ven and the latest news regarding Radu Dragusin being out for the season has only made it more of a difficult situation.

And yet, after being rejected by Chelsea’s Axel Disasi, the only deal they were able to complete was a move for Tel – and that has reportedly ended up being extremely expensive for just a six-month loan.

SportBILD’s Christian Falk has given fans the lowdown on the full details regarding the deal which shows that Tottenham were desperate to bring the attacker to the club.

Taking to X, he revealed: ‘Tottenham are paying loan fee up to €10million for Mathys Tel (19) to FC Bayern. Tottenham pays the entire salary of Tel til Summer. The buying Option in Summer will be €60million for Tottenham‘.

READ NEXT: ‘He told me…’ – Tottenham deadline day signing confirms what Harry Kane said to him prior to move

Is this a good deal for Spurs?

Tel is highly-rated and has been tipped to replicate Robert Lewandowski-type numbers in his future but he has no goals in 14 appearances this season.

That is down to the fact he has been mostly used as a late substitute and hasn’t had any chance to find his feet under Vincent Kompany.

Capable of playing off the left, right or in the middle, Ange Postecoglou will likely use him consistently and across multiple positions given there is Dominic Solanke, Son-Heung Min and Richarlison he can rotate with.

His energy, quick feet and direct nature should go hand-in-hand with their fast attacking style, but it is hard to ignore the financials involved in the deal.

While he will be a strong addition and will bring something new, paying over the odds is likely what forced this deal over the line, despite the Zoom call from Postecoglou which supposedly convinced Tel to join.

Paying the entirety of his wages and a loan fee close to €10million is extremely high for a youngster only here on a temporary deal.

Manchester United reportedly baulked at the demands from the German club pulling out of the deal despite them needing serious attacking reinvestment after Marcus Rashford and Antony’s exits.

Aston Villa completed three loan moves for Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi that involved heavy loan fees but those were compensated by the deals done for Jhon Duran and Jaden Philogene which raised around £90million.

For Spurs, if Tel fails to hit the heights and find his feet, it will go down as a poor and expensive deal and many will likely wonder why a centre-back wasn’t prioritised, especially if they fall to a disappointing season end – it certainly qualifies as a huge risk at the time of writing.

Tottenham transfers: Mathys Tel reveals what Harry Kane told him about Spurs move

Description

Bayern Munich attacker Mathys Tel has confirmed what Harry Kane told him about moving to Tottenham after completing a deadline-day move.

Tel, 19, had attracted attention from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and other clubs but it was Spurs who managed to form a deal.

With less than 500 minutes of action this season, including just two league starts, he was allowed to leave.

Given their poor run of form that has left them languishing in 14th place with 13 defeats, Tel’s versatility in attack is set to be a boost given he plays across the frontline, is eager to play and prove himself and will be given freedom in Ange Postecoglou’s fluid system.

The young attacker arrives on loan until the end of the season and the club have an option to buy him in the summer for a reported fee of £45m.

His teammate at Bayern was Kane, who netted an incredible 280 goals in 435 games for Spurs, and Tel revealed what the England international told him about his former club.

“He told me this is a big club with a lot of very good people, the pitch is very nice, the training centre is very good and if you go there you can enjoy it. Everything was positive from Harry.” Tel said in a video released on social media.

Why Tel didn’t join Man Utd

While a move to Tottenham was completed in the final hours of the window, Tel had been the subject of intense speculation across the past few weeks with other Premier League clubs.

Chelsea had originally registered an interest in what could have been a possible swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku but the German club pulled out of any deal due to their current attacking depth.

The Blues failed to follow up on their interest which allowed the likes of Manchester United to register an interest. With Alejandro Garnacho linked with an exit to Chelsea and Napoli, they were in the running for a move.

However, with no exit for the Argentinian winger, and Bayern demanding a £6.5million loan fee with no option to buy, they pulled out of the deal.

While Spurs had initially been rejected by the young attacker, he made a U-turn with his decision after speaking to Postecoglou over a Zoom video call.

Plus, they were happy to cover the entirety of his wages which helped force the deal through in the final hours of the window.

They had attempted to bring Chelsea’s Axel Disasi to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to help cover for their defensive issues but he rejected them in favour of a move to Aston Villa.

Tel will now be available to jump into the cup action against Liverpool this week but a debut looks more likely for next weekend’s clash with Manchester United.
