Thomas Frank blasts ‘I would never do something that stupid’ after being pictured with Arsenal cup at Tottenham clash

Frank blasts 'I'd never do something that stupid' after holding Arsenal cup - The Sun
Description

TOTTENHAM boss Thomas Frank has hit back at criticism of him drinking out of an Arsenal cup.

The Dane was snapped drinking out of an Arsenal paper cup ahead of his side’s clash with Bournemouth and the picture spread like wildfire on social media.

Asked about the image after Spurs lost 3-2 to the Cherries, Frank was far from happy.

He said: “I definitely did not notice it. It would be completely stupid of me to take it if I knew. It’s a little bit sad in football that I need to be asked about it. I would never do something that stupid.”

Spurs had more of the chances and more of the ball in their game on the south coast, but a 95th-minute Antoine Semenyo goal, on probably his last appearance for the club before moving to Man City, proved decisive.

There maybe couldn’t be a worse time for Frank to be seen with anything associated with Arsenal given the two contrasting fortunes of the north London clubs.

Arsenal sit five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand and dismantled Spurs 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season.

On the other hand, there have been many growing pains with Frank since moving to Tottenham in the summer.

They are currently 14th in the table with seven wins from their 21 games.

Only one win in their last six games is not good enough by a Champions League club’s standards and Frank will be hoping he is given time to implement his style at the club with players that suit him.

Just in the past week, Enzo Maresca has been sacked by Chelsea and Ruben Amorim lost his job with Manchester United.

Two men who had 18 months or less at big clubs will not give great hope to Frank if results continue as they have.

At full time, Micky van de Ven appeared to offer out a Tottenham fan, with Joao Palhinha and Pedro Porro also caught up in a confrontation with supporters.

Frank said sympathised with both parties.

He said: “I haven’t seen that situation, that’s one thing. I think it’s fair to say everyone involved in Tottenham, players, staff, fans, everyone is a tough one to take today.

“I think hopefully everyone can see how hard we worked to get everything in the right direction.

“And I think overall the performance was good, especially in the second half, in a game where we deserved to get more.

“That is extremely painful to be part of, so of course people are frustrated, I’m frustrated, so that’s natural.”

Description

MICKY VAN DE VEN appeared to offer out a Tottenham fan as Joao Palhinha and Pedro Porro were also pulled away from the away end after a late defeat to Bournemouth.

Thomas Frank’s side slipped to another loss in a five-goal thriller on the south coast.

Antoine Semenyo gave Bournemouth a fine leaving present before his £65million Man City move with a last-gasp wonder strike for a 3-2 win.

It saw travelling Spurs fans erupt in fury as the full-time whistle went.

But Van de Ven looked to inflame the situation further as he got involved in a tense confrontation.

The Dutchman waved his arms angrily at the Tottenham supporters and even appeared to ‘offer out’ one fan.

He was eventually dragged away by Spurs staff, but teammate Porro then got involved in another heated encounter.

Afterwards, Palhinha, who had earlier scored a stunning overhead kick, went over to the visiting supporters.

It saw the midfielder, on loan from Bayern Munich, climb over the hoardings before engaging with the angry Tottenham faithful.

Stewards made sure to intervene by keeping a small gap between Palhinha and the fans.

And each party appeared to say their peace before the player walked back onto the pitch before departing down the tunnel.

Speaking later on, Palhinha revealed what he said to the fans.

The Portugal ace declared: “It was just the supporters were sharing their frustrations.

“We of course understand, we respect them first of all. I just said we are fighting for all the same.

“We want to win, not just the players – the staff and the supporters.

“We are trying to get the wins that, in my opinion, we deserve in the last games.”

Frank, meanwhile, refused to be drawn on the topic.

The Spurs boss: “I haven’t seen that situation, that’s one thing.

Tottenham’s eighth defeat of the season started with them taking a fifth minute lead through Mathys Tel.

Bournemouth then went ahead thanks to goals from Evanilson and Eli Junior Kroupi.

But Palhinha levelled with 12 minutes left after leaping high to score a bicycle kick.

However, the Cherries had the final say when Semenyo netted a wonder goal in the fifth minute of added time to win the match.

Bournemouth 3 Spurs 2: Semenyo gives Cherries farewell present on his birthday - The Sun
Description

ANTOINE SEMENYO delivered a parting gift to Bournemouth – with a 90th-minute birthday winner on his final game for the club.

The Ghanaian leaves on Thursday to join Manchester City in a £65million deal.

Some questioned why he was playing in this game given serious injury could have jeopardised the deal.

But Semenyo, who was celebrating his birthday, showed the sense in it by rifling home in injury time before walking off to a hero’s standing ovation.

It ended Bournemouth’s run of 11 games without defeat and was the perfect send-off for the man signed from Bristol City for just £10m three years ago.

Spurs, who were snubbed by Semenyo this month, thought they had fought back for a point.

Joao Palhinha’s overhead kick had made it 2-2, after goals from Evanilson and Junior Kroupi had overturned Mathys Tel’s early strike in the first half.

It left Tottenham fans to stew on yet another disappointing result under Thomas Frank.

While the image of the Dane drinking out of an ARSENAL-branded beaker before kick-off will have gone down like a cup of cold sick.

The Gunners were the last team to visit the Vitality, when Declan Rice’s double saw Mikel Arteta’s side win 3-2, which is presumably why the Cherries had cups with their badge on it.

But the optics of having the Tottenham manager imbibing from a vessel promoting the club’s arch-rivals were awful.

If Frank was already not many Spurs fans’ cup of tea, then this image will have landed him in further hot water with them.

Semenyo received warm applause from the home fans as his name was read out before kick-off.

And rightly so after an impressive 31 goals in 109 games since joining from the Robins in 2023, earning that mega-money move to the Etihad.

Andoni Iraola’s hosts started the game like a team which had not had that winning feeling in 11 games.

And as unambitious as Spurs have been in recent months too under Frank, the visitors took full advantage.

With just five minutes played, Tel put Spurs in front.

Xavi Simons had just come back from a three-game ban and it was the Dutchman’s backheel out wide to Tel that saw the young Frenchman cut in and fire a deflected shot into the far corner.

It was a dream start for Frank – and his team’s first goal from open play in TEN hours.

Soon after, Spurs fans were singing “there’s only one Martin Chivers”, in honour of their late, great centre-forward who sadly passed away earlier in the day.

Chivers, who famously scored twice in the 1972 Uefa Cup final against Wolves, including a bullet header, would have appreciated the next goal that went in here for its aerial quality.

But the goal was not for the club whom he represented 367 times, but for Bournemouth instead as Evanilson flicked home a brilliant header to level things up.

The first time Semenyo did anything of any note came in the 35th minute as he glided round a Spurs defender and clipped in a dangerous ball which evaded everyone.

He played a part – of sorts – in the Cherries going ahead as he went to tap home another delicious Marcus Tavernier delivery.

The former Bath City man missed the cross completely, but Marcos Senesi was on hand behind to square for Kroupi to fire high into the net.

It sparked a rousing rendition of “Champions of Europe, you’re having a laugh” from the home fans.

Spurs’ travelling support, who still have the memory of their miraculous Europa League triumph in Bilbao fresh in their minds, responded by singing “Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that”.

Yet back came the home fans, honing in on Frank this time by enthusiastically telling the Dane “you’re getting sacked in the morning”.

Lucas Bergvall had to be taken off when picking up a thigh problem, and banged the floor in frustration, before sub Richarlison turned the ball against the post.

Micky van de Ven thought he had won a penalty when going down in the box under James Hill’s challenge, but the spotkick was reversed following a VAR check, and he was booked.

Still, Frank’s side kept on persevering and got their rewards when Palhinha’s acrobatic effort provided Spurs with their tenth goal from a corner this term.

But birthday-boy Semenyo ensured the night belonged to him as his fairytale finish ensured exactly that for his time down on the South Coast before he joins Pep.

Martin Chivers was heir to Jimmy Greaves' Tottenham throne who scored Uefa Cup

Martin Chivers was heir to Greaves' Spurs throne who scored Uefa Cup-winner - The Sun
Description

FORMER Spurs and England striker Martin Chivers has died at the age of 80.

“Big Chiv” was a popular figure in his eight years at White Hart Lane, winning the League Cup twice and playing a key role as Spurs became the first winners of the Uefa Cup in 1972.

His partnerships with Jimmy Greaves and Alan Gilzean made him a huge fan favourite and he remained a popular figure long after hanging up his full-time boots in 1980.

Born in Southampton, Chivers made his bow with the Saints at just 17, scoring 30 goals in 39 games as the club were promoted to the first division in 1966.

Two years later, he moved to Tottenham, for a then-British record £125,000.

Spurs boss Bill Nicholson was looking for a line leader to take the club forward, although he arrived with Jimmy Greaves and Alan Gilzean in front of him in the pecking order.

Greaves’ move to West Ham, with Martin Peters coming the other way, saw Chivers take over the leadership mantle.

In his eight seasons at White Hart Lane he scored 174 goals in 367 games, making him the club’s fourth highest scorer behind only Harry Kane, Greaves and Bobby Smith.

For much of that time Chivers endured a love-hate relationship with Nicholson, although their mutual respect lasted until the manager’s death in 2004.

Chivers’ finest moment in a Spurs shirt came in the inaugural Uefa Cup Final in 1972, when Tottenham faced Wolves in a two-legged final.

He had put Spurs in front in the first leg at Molineux with a trademark header but it was his second, coming off the left touchline and exploding a ripper from 35 yards into the net that proved crucial, with a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane sealing the trophy.

Chivers’ England career saw him score 13 goals in just 24 games over three years for Sir Alf Ramsey but he was among the players who was effectively blamed for the 1-1 Wembley draw with Poland that cost the Three Lions a place at the 1974 World Cup.

Nicholson’s replacement, Terry Neill, decided he could do without the striker at the end of the 1975-76 season, selling him to Swiss side Servette Geneva for £80,000 – before himself leaving to join Arsenal.

Chivers then played on for another four seasons as a professional, including spells at Norwich and Brighton.

But he was always a Spurs man, employed as a club ambassador for many years and was on duty only last month when Thomas Frank’s team played Slavia Prague in the Champions League.

Tottenham consider cancelling wonderkid’s loan ahead of first-team audition amid circling Championship clubs

Tottenham consider cancelling wonderkid's loan ahead of first-team audition amid circling Championship clubs - The Sun
Description

TOTTENHAM have discussed cancelling Tyrese Hall’s season-long loan at Notts County and assessing him with the first team.

The attack-minded midfielder, 20, has excelled since landing at Meadow Lane in the summer.

And with five goals from 17 appearances in League Two, his performances have convinced Spurs chiefs to consider bringing him back to North London.

SunSport understands that a recall would be with a view to assessing Hall in first-team training – and potentially handing him a senior role if they think he’s ready.

If not, a collection of second and third-tier clubs are interested in taking him on loan for the latter part of the campaign.

Southampton, Millwall and Hull are among a host of sides with long-standing interest in the youngster.

London-born Hall is known to Tottenham fans and has been tipped as a player with first-team potential.

Spurs’ belief became clear when they handed him a five-year contract in 2024.

But there were lingering doubts about how he would adapt to the senior game.

Those have been cast aside since getting his first taste of men’s football with the Magpies, who would love to keep him until the end of the season.

And Spurs may yet allow him to see out the campaign in Nottingham, where he is guaranteed consistent game time.

Hall has become integral to the way County play as one of two forward-thinking central midfielders.

But there could be an opening at his parent club if he is ready to take it.

Rotation options are limited in the No10 role for manager Thomas Frank, with James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski out injured.

And a spark is needed as fans grow impatient with the Dane’s conservative brand of football.

Legendary Tottenham and England striker Martin Chivers dies aged 80 - The Sun
Description

TOTTENHAM legend Martin Chivers has died aged 80.

The former striker was among Spurs‘ greatest ever players and remains third in the club’s all-time list of goalscorers.

Chivers made 367 competitive appearances for the Lilywhites, netting an impressive 174 times.

The Southampton-born striker also earned 24 England caps, scoring 13 times for his country.

Tottenham led the tributes for their brilliant former forward.

A club statement read: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker, Martin Chivers.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin’s family, friends and former team-mates at this incredibly sad time.

“Our players will wear black armbands during this evening’s fixture against AFC Bournemouth.

“Rest in peace, Martin. One of the all-time greats.”

Former Spurs star Steve Archibald also paid tribute to Chivers.

The Scot, 69, wrote on social media: “Watched the great Martin Chivers before I became a pro, was an amazing watch, he was like Rolls Royce, so smooth in his movement, excellent in the air and a great finisher, but on top of all of that he was a really nice guy.

“Most sincere condolences to all of Martin’s family xxx.”

Spurs’ matchday announcer Pauln Coyte added: “I’m absolutely devastated that my great friend and footballing hero Martin Chivers has passed away.

“He was a giant of a man, the best striker in the world in his day and I will miss him terribly.”

Chivers began his career with hometown club Southampton in 1962.

Following 108 goals in 189 appearances in six years with the Saints, Chivers landed a move to Spurs.

The prolific star helped Spurs to two League Cups and a Uefa Cup during eight years at White Hart Lane.

Chivers’ tally of 22 European goals for Spurs remained a club record for more than 30 years, before being broken by Jermain Defoe in 2013.

Following his White Hart Lane exit, Chivers went on to play for Servette, Norwich, Brighton, Dorchester, Vard Haugesund and Barnet before hanging up his boots in 1983.

Post-retirement, Chivers remained a regular at Spurs, working on matchdays as a host.

Johnson will be missed at Tottenham and it’s sod’s law that Kudus got injured after his exit, says Spurs star

Johnson will be missed at Tottenham and it's sod's law that Kudus got injured after his exit, says Spurs star - The Sun
Description

BRENNAN JOHNSON will be missed at Spurs – and it is “sod’s law” that Mohammed Kudus has picked up an injury two days after the Welshman’s exit.

That is the view of Ben Davies, who knows all about Johnson’s qualities as he plays with him for the Wales national team.

Winger Johnson was Tottenham’s top-scorer last term with 18 goals but was largely overlooked by Thomas Frank this season after the £55million summer capture of Kudus.

It led to Frank sanctioning Johnson’s £35m sale to Crystal Palace on Friday, only for Ghanaian Kudus to limp off with a left thigh issue against Sunderland on Sunday.

Davies, 32, said: “It’s sod’s law that when one guy leaves, Mo picks up something.

“Brennan is a great player, I’m lucky that I get to play with him on the national team as well as here.

“I think he’s going to be missed here but this is the business of football.

“When players aren’t playing, other suitors will come along and that’s what’s happened.”

Kudus will likely have a scan on Monday to assess the damage of his injury with Frank possibly giving an update in his pre-Bournemouth press conference.

Johnson only started six league games for Spurs this term, prompting his switch to Selhurst Park.

But that is far more than veteran Davies has played, with this weekend’s 1-1 draw against the Black Cats the 32-year-old’s first start of the campaign.

He marked it with a goal by turning home from a first-half corner, taking Spurs’ tally of league strikes from flag-kicks this term to nine.

Spurs fans were left frustrated when Brian Brobbey snatched a point late in the second half, but Davies is seeing the positives of three games without defeat.

The ex-Swansea man added: “That’s the positive to look at but we’ve got a stretch now, I think it’s five games in 15 days where it’s intense.

“You can see at the end of that game that both sides were pretty flat out, it’s not really an excuse and we’ve got to go again in the next three days.

“To score was good, we’ve been working on set-pieces a lot and everyone has to do their job and I feel like I did mine.”

Davies has been linked in the French press to Nice during this window.

It comes as Spurs have big interest in Brazilian left-back Souza, 19, of Santos.

On the Nice talk, Davies added: “That one is out of my hands. When you’re in your 30s, you just want to play as much as you can and then go from there.

“But right now, I got a chance to play (against Sunderland) and I did my best.”

Tottenham 1 Sunderland 1: Brian Brobbey secures Black Cats another point against 'top six' to pile pressure on Frank - The Sun
Description

NEW year, same old Spurs.

Thomas Frank had been hoping for a fresh start in 2026 at home after the annus horribilis that was the last 12 months in the Premier League.

Yet once again Tottenham found a way to shoot themselves in the foot in N17 as Brian Brobbey’s belter earned Sunderland a point.

Spurs had rolled back the years earlier in the game as 32-year-old Ben Davies, signed from Swansea 12 years ago, gave them the lead on his 198th Premier League start for the club.

The Welshman poked in from a corner, taking Tottenham’s tally of Prem goals from that scenario to nine this term – two short of division-best Arsenal.

Yet Brobbey’s blast ensured three points once again evaded Spurs on their own turf, having won just four of their 18 home league games in 2025.

Mohammed Kudus limping off in the first half was also painfully reminiscent of Spurs last year, when injuries crippled their league ambitions.

It also came just two days on from Brennan Johnson’s sale to Crystal Palace, meaning there is no obvious cover at right wing.

Frank will no doubt be cursing his luck over that, and praying the damage is not too bad.

But there was little he could blame for his side squandering three points here as Spurs went into their shells and got what they deserved.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

Davies was not the only Spurs player to be afforded a rare start.

Mathys Tel made the line-up for the first time since October and looked like a man on a mission to impress Frank.

Whether or not the young Frenchman would have done that with an effort from range in the opening couple of minutes only the Dane could answer.

That is because shooting from outside the box has largely been outlawed under percentages-man Frank, who feels the old adage of ‘you can’t win the raffle if you don’t buy a ticket’ as statistically flawed.

Still, Tel’s early stinger was too hot for Robin Roefs to handle at the first attempt, with the Sunderland stopper having to gather the loose effort before a Spurs player reached it first.

Already without playmakers Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, Frank suffered more creative crock woe when Kudus fell down holding his thigh in the 16th minute.

Captain Cristian Romero instantly signalled to the bench that a substitution was required and off limped the Ghanaian, with Randal Kolo Muani sent on in his place.

Still, Spurs shook off the Kudus blow and took the lead on the half-hour and from yet another set-piece.

Sunderland can only have themselves to blame knowing that a) Frank’s Spurs are really rather good from dead-ball situations and b) so is Romero.

Yet they somehow gave the Argentine so much space at the far post that not only could he take Tel’s corner down with his chest but also lay it off for centre-back partner Micky van de Ven.

At first it looked as if Van de Ven had added his seventh goal of the season as his shot found its way into the net.

But instead it was only an assist as veteran Davies helped divert the ball past the unwitting Sunderland defenders.

It was Davies first goal since December 2023, when he struck a consolation in a 4-2 defeat at Brighton, the first really terrible performance of the Ange Postecoglou era.

And with this yet another goal from a corner, the ‘set-piece again ole ole’ chant – the tune for which has been sung so many times but with Johnson’s last name in it, on account of his Europa League winner – emerged from the South Stand.

Muani had handed Van de Ven a note when he came on from the coaching staff which the Dutchman intermittently looked at throughout the game, presumably with Sunderland’s set-piece instructions.

There was little Spurs needed to do to prevent one attempted corner delivery though from pantomime villain Granit Xhaka, booed throughout for his Arsenal allegiances.

The Swiss drew mocking cheers from the home fans when slipping over while attempting to take a corner and, in fairness to Xhaka, even he was laughing.

For a brief second we had not one but two Spurs academy graduates on the pitch.

Ironically, they were both for Sunderland as Romaine Mundle came on for Dennis Cirkin, underlining why Tottenham feel they need to get more out of their in-house production line.

It was around that time that Spurs started to lose control, dropping further back and giving their visitors confidence they could get something out of the game.

Enzo Le Fee very nearly put Sunderland on level terms when heading against a post.

Minutes later, it was 1-1 as Brobbey exchanged a clever one-two with Le Fee before smacking the ball into the top corner with his left foot.

The frustration at losing another three points seemed to get to Rodrigo Bentancur as the Uruguayan had some Argie-bargie with Lutsharel Geertruida and had to be split up – before resuming their heated debate after the final whistle.

Boos predictably rang out at full-time with angry Spurs fans upset of seeing more of the same so soon into the New Year.
