Tottenham Hotspur winger Brennan Johnson has found himself at the centre of a transfer saga ahead of the January transfer window with a list of clubs credited with interest in the Welshman’s services.

The 24-year-old started the campaign in fine form with goals against Burnley and Manchester City in the opening two Premier League fixtures but has since fallen out of favour under Thomas Frank. Johnson has started just one of the previous five league games.

Spurs are set to be busy in the January window with financial backing already confirmed earlier this season, but any incomings are set to be offset with outgoings. It appears Johnson is one of the players the club are willing to cash in on.

Crystal Palace and Brentford both interested in Tottenham forward

Earlier this week, Crystal Palace were credited with serious interest in Johnson as Oliver Glasner looks to replace the creativity lost in the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal in the summer. The Eagles are set to face competition from AFC Bournemouth, who are on the hunt for replacements should Antoine Semenyo leave the Vitality Stadium.

Over the weekend, Aston Villa were also said to have joined the race for Johnson. Unai Emery has not been impressed by the loan signings of Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho and Johnson could be recruited with the Villains outside contenders for a title push.

With no shortage of Premier League interest, it’s with somewhat outlandish surprise to see on Sunday that Championship outfit Ipswich Town are also credited with interest in Johnson. The winger has not played in the second tier since 2022 with Nottingham Forest.

Football Insider claim that Ipswich Town have ‘joined the race’ for Johnson, alongside Brentford. The Tractor Boys have reportedly let it be known that they would be keen to bring the attacking to Portman Road on a loan deal for the rest of the season.

Kieran McKenna’s side are chasing promotion back to the Premier League and sit third in the Championship after 22 outings. Ipswich Town beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Kieran McKenna on Ipswich Town transfer window plans

Prior to taking on the Owls this weekend, McKenna was asked about his approach for the January transfer window and said: "Activity can mean different things. I think every club is going to have activity in January. But I want to say honestly, and it's not a cliche, my mind hasn't been on that and isn't on that at the moment.

"Of course, I've been in the meetings. Of course, you give your input. But we've got a big group here, a healthy group at the moment. We've got players who have only played a handful of games for the club. We've got players in the likes of Wes (Burns) coming back from injury.

"Honestly, the overwhelming majority of my focus is on the group here and how to get the best out of them and to become the best team we can be in. Still, always in January transfer windows things can change so late. What we might think is our plan now could change because there's still plenty of games between now and the window is shutting.

"In that time, you can have a big injury, lots of injuries or you can have no injuries. You can have a player step up from the pack and do really, really well in a position that you might have thought we could strengthen. You can have players in different forms.

"Of course, the club are looking at all possibilities and trying to plan ahead, but it doesn't always tend to work that way in January."

Tottenham Hotspur stars Xavi Simons and Cristian Romero were both sent off in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, costing Spurs any points from a strong performance and handing Thomas Frank a team selection nightmare over the coming weeks.

Simons saw a straight red card for a tackle on Virgil van Dijk and will now serve a three game ban while Romero is sidelined for one match having picked up two yellow cards.

What’s frustrating for Frank is that both of those red cards were completely avoidable. Simons was overzealous in closing down Van Dijk, who did not pose a threat, having given the ball away moments prior.

Thomas Frank backs ‘emotions’ of Tottenham Hotspur players

The former RB Leipzig man looked dejected as the big screen showed the dreaded VAR review before John Brooks eventually upgraded a yellow to a red. Meanwhile, Romero’s first booking came for dissent with a second awarded for a kick out at Ibrahima Konate.

Picking up red cards for players not being able to control their emotions is a worrying trend for Spurs. Speaking after the game, Frank said: “I think any player needs to control their emotions and be cool-headed. It's not only because you're a captain that you need to be exceptionally cool-headed.

“That's also always good, of course. We're talking about a very passionate player that's been very good for this club and team in many years.”

Somewhat unbelievably, Spurs are perhaps lucky that Brooks did not spot another player seeing red in the late stages. Richarlison came on from the bench and was amped up having pulled a goal back for the hosts.

Richarlison lucky not to see red for Hugo Ekitike grab

After the Brazil international put the ball in the back of the net, he could be seen on cameras grabbing Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike by the back of the net. The Reds striker was face down on the floor when Richarlison deliberately pushed him down.

Analysing the moment on Sky Sports, Jamie Redknapp and Daniel Sturridge initially chuckled at the coming together but both then agreed there was ‘no need’ for the behaviour.

LiverpoolWorld point out that there is precedent for a player to be sent off for such an action with Manchester United midfielder Casemiro shown red for grabbing a Crystal Palace player by the throat previously. While Richarlison reached for the neck, and not the throat, FA rules on violent conduct state: “A player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.”

There’s no doubt that the striker’s action was deliberate and therefore could easily have been shown a red card for Brooks. That would have left Frank with three players suspended for next weekend’s meeting with Crystal Palace.

Arsenal and Chelsea have been handed a potential boost in their hopes of keeping Liverpool at bay in a Premier League title race with Arne Slot seeing talisman Alexander Isak pick up a worrying injury in the clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The £125 million summer signing once again started the clash on the bench, only coming on at half-time to try and make the difference against Spurs. The London outfit had been reduced to 10 men in the first half with Xavi Simons given his marching orders for a challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

The Sweden international completed his mission of putting Liverpool ahead after just 11 minutes on the pitch. Isak latched onto a Florian Wirtz ball and produced a clinical finish past Guglielmo Vicario to put the visitors ahead.

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak suffers injury blow

While Liverpool celebrations followed, Isak was not part of them as he lay crumpled on the ground holding his knee. Treatment from medical staff soon followed with a stretcher primed for the injured striker.

Isak eventually managed to stand but needed the support of two medical staff as he limped off and down the tunnel, being replaced by Jeremie Frimpong. Speaking on Sky Sports, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said: “Van de Ven has flown into him. He’s slid in there, he has to try and stop the shot, and he lands on Isak. He’s not in a good way. It’s a sad sight for Alexander Isak and for Liverpool. It could have been a rocket moment for him, lift off, and he’s picked up an injury.”

There is certainly real cause for concern for Liverpool given the quick emergence of a stretcher and how Isak struggled to walk when on his feet. A period on the sidelines at this stage of the season for Liverpool’s marquee summer signing would certainly boost hopes at Arsenal and Chelsea of staying above their rivals in the division.

Arsenal and Chelsea handed potential boost in Premier League title race

The Gunners are eight points above Arne Slot’s men prior to facing Everton on Saturday but a turn in Reds form of late will have Mikel Arteta aware of the threat the Merseyside outfit continues to pose. Meanwhile, should Liverpool pick up all three points at Spurs, they will be level on points with Chelsea.

Liverpool meet Arsenal on January 8 and it remains to be known whether Isak will be fit enough to feature at the Emirates Stadium. The Reds don’t take on Chelsea until May but, being without the striker over the busy festive and New Year period will certainly hamper performances.

Isak had scored just one Premier League goal for Liverpool prior to this weekend but Neville admitted that the feeling is that the striker would have a deciding factor in the league over the second half of the campaign.

Neville said: “I’m just hoping that’s not a bad one for Isak. It has been a struggle at the start of his Liverpool career but I don’t think anyone is any doubt about how good he is and what he will become when he starts to fly.”

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero was subject to criticism from Sky Sports pundits on Saturday evening after his red card in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool.

It was a dramatic meeting in north London with Spurs finishing the match with just nine men on the pitch. Xavi Simons was shown a straight red card in the first half after leaving his studs up when trying to tackle Reds defender Virgil van Dijk.

Romero was then given his marching orders in the 93rd minute after kicking out at Ibrahima Konate. The Tottenham Hotspur captain was shown a second yellow card, having already been booked for dissent earlier in the second half.

Jamie Redknapp slams ‘stupid’ Tottenham Hotspur player

The defender was sent off as Thomas Frank’s side piled on the pressure against Liverpool, despite being down to 10 men. Spurs, who pulled one back through substitute Richarlison, had come close to levelling the scores at 2-2 with Liverpool backs against the wall.

Romero’s sending off helped take pressure off Liverpool and the defender was slammed by Jamie Redknapp and Gary Neville for costing his side a chance of a point. Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “It was so chaotic, it was madness. What Liverpool did was a masterclass in how not to manage the last 10 minutes of the game. Tottenham ended up with nine men and looked like the team who had 11. Thomas Frank will go into that dressing room and think, we actually did okay there.

“What Romero did is what Romero does. It was ridiculous. To get involved right in front of the referee and to kick out at someone. It was so stupid. If my four-year-old did that, I’d go, ‘what are you doing?’”.

Gary Neville took a similar view as he reacted to the red card live on commentary and said: “He’s not right, him. His team have a chance to get back in it. What is he doing? Forget the fact it's madness because he is already on a yellow card, his team have a chance here. Absolute madness, it really is.”

Thomas Frank reacts to Cristian Romero red card

Speaking after the game, Frank shared his frustrations with the red card shown to Simons but was less hard line on whether he felt the referee shouldn’t have sent off Romero.

The Spurs boss said: “I also think we got on the wrong end on two. You can see there's probably a reason why the whole team reacted as they do. I think that's probably a good indicator.

“Normally, if it's one player reacting, if it's the whole team, probably because there's something about it. I think we all played football enough and seen enough football that there's something probably around that. So, I can't see if it's right or wrong that he gives the first yellow.

“The second yellow, I see two big boys competing. Konate absolutely smashing through Cuti. It's a foul, I'm not saying more. His foot landed on Cuti's head. Not a yellow, I'm not saying that. Cuti makes a reaction. I think I guess it can be given, but also I guess it can be not given.”

Crystal Palace are set to face serious competition from Premier League rivals AFC Bournemouth over a potential January transfer move for Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson.

The Welsh international had emerged as one of the Eagles’ top targets this week. Johnson is struggling for a regular place in the starting XI under Thomas Frank and hasn’t scored in the Premier League since the second fixture of the season.

Spurs are expected to be busy in January with outgoings necessary in order to make space for new faces to help Frank find consistency in north London. Given his irregular minutes, Johnson is one of those who could make way.

Crystal Palace face competition for Brennan Johnson transfer

News Shopper reporter Bobby Manzi claims that sources have indicated that Crystal Palace are ‘keen’ to bring Johnson across London with adding attacking impetus a ‘matter of urgency’ at Selhurst Park. A £35 million fee is touted with Spurs having paid £47.5 million to sign the player from Nottingham Forest in 2023.

Johnson is the type of player who could slot into Oliver Glasner’s system behind Jean-Philippe Mateta but the Eagles will face competition from AFC Bournemouth to land that deal. The Cherries are preparing for life without Antoine Semenyo.

The Bournemouth star man has a £60 million release clause in his contract, which is expected to be activated in January with Manchester City, Liverpool and Spurs all monitoring a deal. Transfer specialist Graeme Bailey reports that the Cherries could look to use Spurs’ interest in Semenyo as part of a deal which would see Johnson come the other way.

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank ‘aware’ of Johnson qualities

Missing out on the winger would be a blow for Oliver Glasner, who has been outspoken about a lack of backing during the summer transfer window. Speaking about the upcoming window this week, Glasner said: “We started to talk about this weeks ago. If we start now, it is too late. Everything is already on track, and it's just to get the deals done. We know this, the club knows this, the board knows this.”

Crystal Palace lost creativity and attacking impetus this summer when Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal late in the window for £67.5 million. The Eagles did splurge on Villarreal man Yeremy Pino but the Spaniard is still finding his feet in the Premier League.

Speaking about Johnson last month, Spurs boss Frank said: I'm very aware that Brennan's got some very good qualities. One of them is scoring goals and running in behind and arriving in the box. I really like everything about him. He also scored goals this year as well. Four, I think, in total. So I'm very aware of them.

"So it's all about how you create that team, where we perform, how we get the best players in, where do we play them. Is it Mo to the right, is it Brennan? Who plays the 10? What kind of player do we play in a different position to make it click?”

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are reported to have fallen behind Premier League rivals Manchester City in the transfer race for AFC Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.

The 25-year-old has had a scintillating start to the season with seven goals and three assists in the division. Semenyo was on target in the 4-4 draw with Manchester United on Monday night.

The forward’s form has sparked transfer talk ahead of the January window and a £60 million release clause in his contract at the Vitality Stadium makes a move away from the south coast a realistic possibility.

Manchester City hold talks with Antoine Semenyo

Several Premier League clubs have been linked with Semenyo, including Arsenal and Spurs, but it appears to be Manchester City who are frontrunners. Pep Guardiola’s side have made up ground after a slower start to the campaign and are now just two points behind the Gunners.

talkSPORT reports that Manchester City have now ‘held talks’ with Semenyo as their transfer interest becomes concrete. The forward will be available to play in the Premier League throughout the winter with Ghana failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Guardiola is currently without wingers Jeremy Doku and Oscar Bobb due to injury and it’s touted that the Cityzens could move swiftly to recruit Semenyo once the window opens. Liverpool and Manchester United are also said to be ‘actively pursuing’ deals for Semenyo.

The player only signed a new five-year contract with AFC Bournemouth earlier this year but the existence of a release clause leaves the Cherries with little power. The report claims that Semenyo is ‘calm about his future’ despite speculation.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal monitoring AFC Bournemouth winger

It’s added that Tottenham Hotspur are now ‘outsiders’ to complete a deal in a blow for Thomas Frank. The London outfit are set to have cash to spend in January and a lack of firepower has been an issue this term.

Meanwhile, Arsenal hold interest in Semenyo but a transfer move would only happen if they offload a winger next month. A ‘quiet transfer window’ is touted for the Gunners by talkSPORT, meaning that Manchester City’s latest moves are likely less of a concern for Arsenal.

Speaking about Semenyo in November, AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola said: "Antoine is our player, he will continue being our player. In January, you can ask me about the market in January, but right now I'm not worried about the next markets. "It's something that especially you know that I hate to talk about in August, January, the moments when the market is open, but it is not one of those moments. It's November.

"I'm more worried about the situation of the players to play tomorrow, the short-term, the things that really matter and in January, we will talk about whatever happens, the players we need. But it is not something that I'm worried about today."

Tottenham are back in action on Saturday when they face Liverpool in a clash between two teams desperate to improve on their respective starts to the season. Spurs come into this one on the back of a hugely disappointing defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, and one that piled the pressure on Thomas Frank.

Meanwhile, Liverpool picked up a much-needed win when they saw off Brighton, moving to within two points of the top four. Here we round up all the early injury news surrounding both sides ahead of this one.

Geovanni Leoni - Out

Leoni is out long term with a serious knee injury.

Mohamed Salah - Out (AFCON)

Salah is away with Egypt for the African Cup of Nations.

Cody Gakpo - Out

Gakpo is out until the new year with a muscular issue. Slot confirmed: “It's going to be weeks. With Cody, it's a muscle injury, and Wata is an ankle injury.”

Wataru Endo - Out

The same update as above applies.

Jeremie Frimpong - Doubt

Frimpong has been working up his fitness after a hamstring issue and could be involved in some form here.

Joe Gomez - Out

Slot says Gomez is almost certainly out of this one. The Dutchman said: “If I have a player who goes off with a muscle injury like Joe, that's normally not a positive thing. I would not expect him to be in the squad [at Spurs]. But sometimes you get a positive surprise.”

Dominik Szoboszlai - Doubt

It seems unlikely Szoboszlai will be back here, but Slot has not yet ruled him out, so we will keep him as a doubt. The Liverpool boss said last week: “It didn't look great when I just saw him. But he has unbelievable mentality, so let's hope for the best.”

Pape Matar Sarr - Out (AFCON)

Sarr has jetted off for the African Cup of Nations and will be absent from club duties.

Destiny Udogie - Out

Frank has confirmed: “Destiny, as I said after the [Brentford] game, picked up a hamstring injury at the end of the Newcastle game, so he’s out until January, unfortunately.”

Dominic Solanke - Out

Frank has said: “He is back on the grass and training individually. I guess it's good news when he posts on social media. The injury he picked up in July, it has dragged on for a while. When he is fully training, I will have news.”

Dejan Kulusevski - Out

Kulusevski remains out, and while he is closing in on a return, he is not expected back until late December. Frank has said recently: “Deki is still not on the grass. We're working very hard to get him fit as quickly as possible.”

Radu Dragusin - Out

Dragusin is not expected back just yet, with another week or two expected. Frank said in his last update: “Kota (Takai) played his first minutes in a Spurs shirt with Radu also stepping up his return to fitness this afternoon. The pair featured in a friendly for our U21s vs Dagenham at Hotspur Way.”

Yves Bissouma - Out

Bissouma picked up an injury in October and it’s unclear when he will return He suffered a knee ligament injury. On top of that, he is also in trouble over off the field issues, with Frank confirming: “It's an internal matter that we're dealing with at the moment, and when we have dealt with that, then I will have a comment on it.”

Kota Takai - Out

Takai is back in training, but he will need to build up his fitness after a long spell out.

James Maddison - Out

Maddison is out for much - if not all - of the season with a knee injury. It was confirmed in August: “We can confirm that James will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. His surgery will take place in the coming days, and following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.”

Tottenham Hotspur star Yang Min-heyok could be the subject of head-turning transfer interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid as he continues to impress on loan.

The 19-year-old only arrived in north London at the start of 2025, having agreed a transfer from K-League outfit Gangwon FC in July 2024. Yang had won the Player of the Year accolade in the Korean division and arrived in the UK touted as a prodigy, tipped to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Son Heung-min.

Yang was immediately loaned to QPR and enjoyed a successful short loan spell, showing sparks of his promise in 14 appearances. The winger then joined Portsmouth on loan this season and has registered two goals and an assist this season.

Yang Min-hyeok continues to impress at Portsmouth

His minutes have been managed by John Mousinho at Fratton Park but the Pompey boss has been outspoken with praise for the player. When asked if Yang had ‘exceeded expectations’ at the start of December, he told The News: “I think so [his loan period has gone as expected]. I think he probably has exceeded expectations, with the way he came in and did as well as he did - especially in Josh Murphy's absence.

“We’ve still got very high hopes for Min-hyeok, and we’re really pleased with where he’s at. I think he can definitely influence games off the bench, but he’s done both. He started games and also influenced things off the bench. At times, he’s started and looked very bright for us.”

Those performances are reported to not have gone unnoticed in Spain with Defensa Central claiming that the loan star is being ‘closely watched’ by Real Madrid due to his ‘immense potential’.

Real Madrid linked with £6m Tottenham Hotspur transfer

The report goes as far as to suggest that Real Madrid could make a £6 million offer to Tottenham Hotspur to sign the South Korean. It’s not said whether that bid would come in January or in the summer.

Yang is yet to make a first team appearance for Spurs but was involved in the pre-season camp under Thomas Frank this summer. Tottenham Hotspur would surely be unlikely to readily green light an exit for a teenager with such big potential.

Tottenham Hotspur News even claim that the club could be considering a loan recall from Portsmouth next month with a view to sending Yang elsewhere to ensure that he continues to develop.

When asked about his hopes for Yang this summer, Frank had said: “The potential is good. It will take a lot of effort for him to grow further. However, I have high expectations.”

Tottenham have already begun internal discussions about replacing Thomas Frank with three names on the club’s shortlist, according to a report.

Frank is under increasing pressure at the club following a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon. Spurs are 11th in the Premier League after 16 games, with six wins, four draws and six defeats.

It is the club’s worst start to a league campaign for 17 years as they sit six points adrift of the top four. Up next is a home game with Liverpool, who are now unbeaten in five games in all competitions after turning a corner under Arne Slot.

According to Caught Offside, “internal discussions have already begun at Tottenham regarding his [Frank’s] long-term position” but they are not ready to sack him immediately with the ex-Brentford man set to be afforded more time.

A shortlist has already been drawn up, however, with the report adding that Mauricio Pochettino has been identified as the strongest potential replacement if Frank is to be dismissed from his position.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Fulham manager are also said to be on the shortlist. Glasner is out of contract at Palace at the end of the season and has yet to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park while Silva has a high compensation fee to get him out of his contract with the Cottagers.

“I think Frank is a really good manager and we have to remember that all managers need time," said ex-England winger and BBC Match of the Day pundit Theo Walcott. "Spurs are not in a terrible position either.

"I think the disappointing thing from their fans' point of view is that this is an opportunity to do even better because of how close the middle of the table is - and how no-one is really standing out massively in that middle pack."

After the loss to Forest, Frank said: "I do everything to control my emotions, which is a hurricane inside me, because, of course, it's deeply frustrating that we are not doing better after three good performances.

"It is extremely important to be calm and measured and of course, have very, very direct and clear messages at the right time so they're not in doubt of what I think, because I'm very honest about where we are as well.

"I was also very honest, today was a very bad performance. No two ways about that, but also know that to change this, this will take some time.

"No one will want to hear about that. It's just reality. I think the ones who have followed the club and the team, I think it's fair to say there's been a few not too consistent performances, and that's the thing. We are working very hard."

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham have been dealt a potentially fatal transfer blow in their pursuit of struggling Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford in January.

Both London outfits have been linked with a move for a new shot-stopper in recent weeks. The Hammers invested £20 million in Mads Hermansen from Leicester City this summer but the 25-year-old had an underwhelming start to life at the London Stadium.

Alphonse Areola has since reclaimed the number one spot but there’s a feeling that the club does not view the Frenchman as a long-term solution with Lukasz Fabianski also returning on a free transfer in September.

West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur in market for goalkeeping upgrades

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur number one Guglielmo Vicario is under intense scrutiny after shaky performances this term. The goalkeeper’s horror pass to Archie Gray was the latest moment to forget at Nottingham Forest.

Spurs boss Thomas Frank has stood by Vicario but it has not stopped transfer rumours. When asked if he was frustrated at the player’s error on Sunday, Frank said: “No … I think you see that every week in the Premier League and from every team all over the world. So there’s no problem with that. Mistakes like that happen. When things are going against us we need to keep doing the right thing and keep our cool heads.”

One goalkeeper who has been linked with both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham is Trafford. Football Insider carry the latest on the 23-year-old’s future and suggests that, despite a lack of playing time this term, Manchester City will not let him leave in January.

Man City position on James Trafford outlined

Trafford only signed at the Etihad Stadium in the summer after an impressive campaign with Burnley in the Championship. The club did then, however, invest in Gianluigi Donnarumma, which has demoted Trafford to a place on the bench.

The outlet claims that Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also interested in the goalkeeper. Hammers News suggest that West Ham could also reignite interest having made enquiries over the player this summer.

Football Insider claim that the five-year contract penned by Trafford this summer means that any exit is ‘highly unlikely’ come January. The shot stopper has featured in cup games and, with Manchester City in fine form, is expected to have more opportunities as the season continues.

Trafford is expected to start against Brentford in the quarter final of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night with Manchester City set to rebuff any January interest in their second choice.
