The case for and against Tottenham Hotspur sacking Ange Postecoglou - The Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of their worst season in recent history. Results have been abysmal, performances uninspiring, and questions are being asked. With Spurs languishing in 14th place, a sacking seems inevitable—but will Tottenham pull the trigger on Ange Postecoglou?

For most of the season, Ange Postecoglou has ridden his luck. Spurs have played 29 matches and lost more than they’ve won—15 defeats, just 10 victories. That’s simply unacceptable for a club of this stature.

Cup performances haven’t been much better. Spurs crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the semi-finals and were dumped from the FA Cup in the fourth round.

Had Tottenham Hotspur made it past the fourth round of the FA Cup, a semi-final run looked likely, given the absence of most of the traditional ‘big six’.

With nothing but pride left to play for in the league, and results getting worse by the week, the question isn’t whether Postecoglou will be sacked—it’s when.

The case for and against parting ways with Postecoglou

There are three schools of thought on Postecoglou’s future. Some fans want him gone immediately, others prefer to wait until the end of the season, while a third group blames Tottenham’s hierarchy rather than the manager.

There’s sympathy for Ange, given that he had to navigate a brutal injury crisis that sidelined 12 players at one point. But Spurs’ form hasn’t improved even with key players returning.

MORE SPURS STORIES

And if you analyse their performances before the injury crisis, they were just as inconsistent as they are now.

From August to December 1, Spurs played 20 matches, winning 11 and drawing seven. They dropped points to Leicester City, Newcastle, Ipswich, Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Brighton, and Fulham—teams they should be beating.

The inconsistency didn’t start with the injuries; it’s been there for a long time, even stretching back to last season.

And when a team struggles for consistency, there’s only one man who gets the blame—the manager. If you can’t set your team up to beat sides well below you, then questions have to be asked.

Just as a side note—Leicester City took four points off Spurs this season, with a draw at full strength early on and a defeat when injuries struck later.

The best time for Tottenham to sack Ange Postecoglou

Postecoglou isn’t the only culprit. The club’s hierarchy, with their lack of ambition and failure to prioritise on-field success, have played a massive role in Spurs’ decline.

But Daniel Levy and company aren’t leaving anytime soon. And despite the limitations, other managers have done better under this ownership. Yes, Ange hasn’t been backed fully, but he’s had money to spend in every transfer window.

As for injuries, they happen in modern football—every team deals with them. The best managers adapt. Postecoglou hasn’t. Take Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth—he’s working with far less than Postecoglou, yet he tactically outclassed him in their recent meeting.

The argument about a congested schedule also falls flat, as Spurs have had plenty of rest in recent weeks.

In the first leg against AZ, they had ample time to prepare, yet they still delivered another lethargic display. That’s become the norm under Postecoglou.

Of course, the Europa League is still there. It’s his lifeline. And at this point, it doesn’t make much sense to sack him mid-season—any new manager would struggle to make an immediate impact. Plus who really would want to join Tottenham when there is nothing much to achieve?

However, if Ange Postecoglou doesn’t deliver the Europa League, especially with a nearly full-strength squad, then it has to be goodbye for the Australian come the end of the season.

A fresh report has revealed how close Ange Postecoglou is to being sacked and whether Andoni Iraola would be interested in taking over at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.

Following Tottenham’s defeat to Fulham on Sunday, some pundits have said that Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs job is hanging by a thread, which is hard to argue with given the Lilywhites’ terrible Premier League record this season.

It has been reported over recent days that Tottenham have already contacted Andoni Iraola about replacing Postecoglou at the end of the season.

Now a fresh update has revealed whether the Bournemouth boss is a realistic target for the North London club.

Andoni Iraola is open to the idea of joining Tottenham

The Telegraph have now revealed that while Tottenham Hotspur do not have immediate plans of sacking Postecoglou, success in the Europa League is seen as critical for the Australian’s long-term job prospects.

The report confirms that Iraola is one of the names at the top of Spurs’ wishlist should they decide to part ways with the 59-year-old.

It is explained that the Spaniard’s contract runs until 2026, and Bournemouth are determined to keep hold of him and are expected to have a discussion with the head coach next month.

MORE SPURS STORIES

However, the publication adds that sources close to Iraola’s camp have indicated that he would be interested in the prospect of taking over at Spurs.

Marco Silva is also on Spurs’ managerial radar

The Telegraph say that Fulham’s Marco Silva is alongside Andoni Iraola on Tottenham’s shortlist, with the Lilywhites admiring the work he has done at Fulham.

It is explained that despite the Portuguese coach’s impressive record at Craven Cottage, his future at the club remains in doubt.

Silva’s contract at Fulham has a £6m release clause, but it is unclear at the moment if the West London club will demand that the full clause be met if Tottenham come calling for their head coach.

Djed Spence pulls Ange Postecoglou away from fan confrontation after Tottenham defeat

A video doing the rounds on social media shows Ange Postecoglou angrily confronting a Tottenham fan after the final whistle, with the Spurs boss needing to be pulled away by Djed Spence and Mathys Tel.

The performance that Tottenham Hotspur delivered at Craven Cottage on Sunday is one that Spurs fans have seen many times this season, especially away from home.

The Lilywhites failed to assert themselves in the game, especially in the first half and proceeded to concede two soft goals.

The 2-0 defeat at West London is Tottenham’s 15th loss of the Premier League season in just 29 games, and some pundits have suggested that Postecoglou is now just about hanging onto his Spurs job.

Video: Ange Postecoglou confronts Tottenham fan after final whistle

The Tottenham fans who made the trip to Craven Cottage were not best pleased with the display they saw from their side and a confrontation broke out between one supporter and Postecoglou just as the Spurs boss was about to enter the tunnel.

A video doing the rounds on social media shows a fan repeatedly asking “What was that?”, referring to the performance. The Australian is then seen losing his temper and asking the fan to behave.

MORE SPURS STORIES

That is when Djed Spence and Mathys Tel pushed Postecoglou away, with the Frenchman seen telling the fan to show some respect.

Postecoglou needs to stop responding to taunts

Some Spurs supporters on social media seemingly feel that the fan did nothing wrong and was just asking a simple enough question.

However, that is a little disingenuous as the fan knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted his five seconds of fame, and he got it.

Postecoglou needs to stop responding to these kinds of taunts as he has nothing to gain from them, and they are only making life more difficult for him at a time when he is already under immense pressure.

Ange Postecoglou told his Tottenham Hotspur job is hanging by a thread

Description

Jamie O’Hara believes that Ange Postecoglou is now clinging to his job by his fingernails following Tottenham’s defeat against Fulham on Sunday, insisting that the Australian will not have any way back if Spurs lose a big upcoming game.

One can understand why Tottenham Hotspur would want to prioritise the Europa League, given that they have nothing but pride to play for in the Premier League this season, with the Spurs boss unsurprisingly rotating his side for their trip to Craven Cottage.

Unfortunately for Postecoglou, Tottenham took their eye off the ball and slipped to their 15th defeat of their league campaign. Spurs are now 14th in the Premier League table.

O’Hara has now explained why this latest loss against Fulham is particularly damaging to Postecoglou’s long-term future at N17.

Jame O’Hara says Ange Postecoglou is on thin ice

The pundit acknowledged that Spurs’ primary focus is on the Europa League, but he insisted that the Premier League form will have a big impact on Tottenham’s ultimate decision on Postecoglou’s future.

With key players coming back from injury, O’Hara suggested that the Australian is running out of excuses and opined that the club may be forced to pull the plug on the project if they are eliminated by Eintracht Frankfurt from the Europa League.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The former Spurs midfielder told Sky Sports after Fulham’s 2-0 win over Tottenham: “A really poor performance again from Spurs. They’ve been inconsistent all season. Lacklustre in possession, no real edge to our game, no bite.

“Fulham are a good side, and they’re well organised, but you’ve got to take the game to them. I understand we’ve got the Europa League, and we have put all of our eggs in that basket, but the Premier League is bread and butter.

“The standard of the performances in the Premier League this season is nowhere near good enough, and I think Ange is clinging onto his job right now. We’ve got to play Frankfurt in the quarter-finals [of the Europa League] – they’re a good team, they’re fourth [in the Bundesliga] at the moment.

“That is a tough game. I think if we go out then, it’s probably ‘see you later’ to Ange Postecoglou at Spurs. I don’t see a way back. Is he getting the best out of these players now? We’re getting players back fit.

“The second goal we conceded today – I’m a massive fan of Djed Spence, I really like him, he’s done really well since he’s come in – but the defending for the goal is absolutely shocking.”

Alarm bells will be ringing at Tottenham Hotspur

Even if Tottenham somehow create history by winning the Europa League this season, serious questions would still have to be raised about the club’s league form.

There have been next to no improvements when it comes to performance levels away from home and that is something that the Spurs hierarchy will consider while making their decision on Postecoglou’s future.

There is little evidence at the moment to suggest that the 59-year-old can consistently deliver results in the Premier League and take the club where they want to be.

Match Report: Fulham 2-0 Tottenham: Ange Postecoglou’s job is hanging by a thread

Description

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon. Two second-half goals from Rodrigo Muniz and former Spurs man Ryan Sessegnon saw the Cottagers move to 8th in the table while the Lilywhites slipped further down to 14th.

Tottenham’s woeful results before international fixtures continue, as another sloppy performance saw them lose three points for the sixth time before a break.

Ange Postecoglou once again rotated heavily given the short turnaround from Thursday’s clash vs AZ Alkmaar.

Mathys Tel, Brennan Johnson, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ben Davies, and Archie Gray (finally in midfield) all started. Meanwhile, Heung-min Son, Wilson Odobert, Lucas Bergvall, James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Pape Matar Sarr dropped to the bench.

Fans were far from pleased with the midfield selection, and their concerns were justified as the lack of creativity in the first 45 was painfully obvious.

First half: Fulham 0-0 Tottenham Hotspur

It was a scrappy affair from the off. Both teams struggled to hold possession, though Spurs were arguably worse, often passing backwards and inviting even more pressure.

Fulham’s game plan was simple: find their wingers or full-backs overlapping in spaces and whip crosses into the box. Spurs repeatedly lost possession in midfield, with Tel, Bentancur, and Bissouma particularly careless, allowing Fulham to create chances.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Despite Fulham’s pressure, their finishing wasn’t the best, with Guglielmo Vicario making comfortable saves or shots flying wide.

Spurs’ best moment of the half came when Mathys Tel did brilliantly to beat his man on the right flank, but he hesitated with his final ball, and there wasn’t any green shirt to meet it.

Antonee Robinson, who went on to complete the most dribbles in the game (3), caused plenty of problems.

Fulham had the best chance of the half ten minutes before the break when Ben Davies failed to clear the ball properly, allowing Timothy Castagne a shot straight at Vicario.

There was a brief injury scare for Cristian Romero, who went down looking concerned but eventually carried on. Fulham also appealed for a penalty when an attempted cross from Alex Iwobi flicked off Destiny Udogie and struck Bentancur’s trailing arm, but referee Andy Madley waved play on.

At half-time, the stats summed up Spurs’ lack of creativity; just 0.07 (xG), while Fulham had 0.36. (FotMob)

Second half: Fulham 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

There was absolutely no creativity in Tottenham’s midfield, and Ange Postecoglou had no choice but to bring on Son and Bergvall for Johnson and Bissouma.

The substitutions had an immediate impact, but Fulham also stepped up their aggression.

Spurs had two big chances to take the lead, both falling to Dominic Solanke. The first came from a pinpoint Bergvall cross, and the second from a Son free-kick. Both headers however went wide.

Mathys Tel then came closest, curling an effort on target, only for Bernd Leno to push it away. The rebound fell to Solanke, but his poor first touch sent the ball flying over the bar.

Fulham had their own chance later, as Vicario parried a cross straight to Willian. His curled shot whistled just past the post.

For a moment, it seemed like Spurs would grind out their first 0-0 draw under Postecoglou. With Romero off, Spurs reverted to a Davies-Gray centre-back pairing. Just eight minutes later, Fulham capitalised.

Odobert lost the ball under pressure from three Fulham players, and Spurs couldn’t clear their lines. Andreas Pereira teed up Rodrigo Muniz, who fired inside the left-hand post.

Tottenham pushed for an equaliser, and with five minutes to go, Bergvall was taken down in the box by Calvin Bassey. VAR decided there wasn’t enough in it, but Spurs fans will likely disagree.

With Tottenham pushing high up the pitch in search of an equaliser, Fulham doubled their lead. A long ball forward saw Davies get into a mess with Ryan Sessegnon, who muscled and curled a right-footed effort into the far corner. 2-0 and it just had to be Sessegnon, didn’t it?

Five minutes of added time amounted to nothing, and the final whistle confirmed 3rd winless league game for Ange Postecoglou’s men.

What’s next for Spurs?

Ange Postecoglou has no excuses for this one. He had his full squad available, but he chose not to start his best XI. The result speaks for itself.

This loss makes it 15 defeats for the season. The last time Spurs lost these many games in a league campaign was back in 2003-04.

Just last week, we suggested that Spurs’ European hopes were dented after the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth. Now, it’s fair to say that they are completely dead (via the Premier League).

Spurs fans have to sit through two weeks of international football before returning to yet another London derby. This time against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham midfielder Jamie Donley is continuing to win admirers with his displays out on loan, and he is now reportedly giving serious thought to changing his national allegiances.

Jamie Donley is thought of very highly by the coaches at Hotspur Way, which is why not many at Tottenham would be surprised by how well the attacking midfielder has done on loan at Leyton Orient.

The 20-year-old has been dominating League One over the past few months, proving the O’s main creative force in the number ten role, having 11 goal contributions to his name so far this season.

The youngster might have his sights set on challenging for a first-team spot at Tottenham Hotspur next season, but it has now emerged that he is also giving serious thought to breaking into senior international football by making a big move.

Jamie Donley considering changing his international allegiance

Donley has represented England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 levels, but he is also eligible to play for Northern Ireland.

According to John Wenham, who regularly breaks news on Tottenham’s youth players on his social media platform, Lilywhite Rose, the midfielder is now considering changing his international allegiance to Northern Ireland.

Wenham reveals that Norther Ireland’s manager Michael O’Neill has been impressed with the Spurs academy graduate’s displays at Brisbane Road this season, and a door could thus open for the youngster to be fast-tracked into international football.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Tough decision for Donley early in his Spurs career

This is a hard decision for Donley to make at this stage of his career. The midfielder evidently has a high ceiling and might have dreams of breaking into the senior England squad in a few years.

However, he would also be tempted to get a taste of what it is like to play at the international level as soon as possible, with Northern Ireland potentially ready to offer the Spurs man such an opportunity.

Tottenham legend reveals how a row with the chairman led to his N17 exit

Teddy Sheringham has explained why he made the decision to leave Tottenham Hotspur in 1997, shedding light on the interesting conversation he had with the club’s former owner and chairman, Alan Sugar, prior to his move to Manchester United.

Sheringham is considered by many Spurs fans to be among the best strikes to have graced the White Hart Lane pitch during the Premier League era.

The former England striker scored 97 goals for Spurs in 236 appearances across two spells, even captaining Tottenham when he returned to the club for a second spell in 2001.

The 58-year-old has now explained why he decided to swap the Lilywhites for Man Utd back in 1997.

Teddy Sheringham reveals why he left Tottenham

The legendary striker forged a formidable partnership with Jurgen Klinsmann during his time at N17, with the two combining brilliantly together.

That strike-pairing was up there with the best fans have seen at Spurs in the Premier League era, alongside Kane-Son, Berbatov-Keane, and Crouch-Defoe.

Sheringham has now revealed it frustrated him when Tottenham decided to sell Klinsmann, which is when he realised that the club were not prioritising building a strong team.

MORE SPURS STORIES

He said on Off The Shelf Podcast: “I wanted the best players in the world to come and play with me at Tottenham. Klinsmann came here, Popescu, you know, we had Darren (Anderton), Nicky Barnby was on the scene.

“They were top players. I wanted the best players to come and play with me. Once Klinsmann left the first time, it was, that was not going to happen.

“They were, for some reason, Tottenham got their fingers burnt and they were not going to sign the top players that I wanted to play with. In the end, I had a row with the chairman and I just said, look, I want to go and he said, well, go on then, in no uncertain terms, go on, if you want to go. If you can’t tell me that we’re going to be signing these top players again, I don’t want to be here.

“He went, well, go on then, go. It was like, okay. I was lucky enough that Man United came in for me and fitted into a team that was already a machine.”

Sheringham’s words should serve as a warning to Spurs hierarchy

While what Sheringham describes happened almost three decades ago under different ownership, it should serve as a warning to the current Spurs board about the importance of building a title-winning team.

We are already hearing reports that Cristian Romero is hesitating to sign a new Spurs contract as he wants to play Champions League football, and the club’s other top players could do the same.

If Tottenham want to retain their best players, they will have to show ambition in the transfer market and demonstrate their intention to compete for trophies.

Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat to Fulham

Description

Tottenham Hotspur were back in Premier League action this afternoon with a short trip across London to Fulham, but Ange Postecoglou and co walked away with a toothless 2-0 defeat.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned from the game:

No creativity without James Maddison or Dejan Kulusevski

Ange Postecoglou opted for squad rotation after the Thursday night Europa League win over AZ Alkmaar. Heung-min Son, James Maddison, Micky Van de Ven, Pedro Porro, and Lucas Bergvall were all benched from the start against Fulham and it showed immediately. With all the creative players either on the bench or out injured – like Dejan Kulusevski – Tottenham lacked any kind of drive or ingenuity in midfield.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur have struggled all season long both on and off the ball, and that was the case once again this afternoon – to the point that the former was hooked at half-time. Of course, Postecoglou will have one eye on keeping his best players injury-free ahead of a Europa League push, but there needs to be some balance to a starting XI.

Archie Gray gets a chance in the Tottenham midfield

I felt a little sorry for Archie Gray today. Surrounded by the inefficiency of Bissouma and Bergvall, he stood little chance of shining in the pivot role, especially considering it was his first start in midfield for months. While he bounced the ball around nicely at times, keeping Spurs ticking over, he struggled to elevate his game to much more than simple passes.

Gray was by far the best of the three who started in the engine room and clearly just needs more minutes to get up to speed in Postecoglou’s system. It will be interesting to see how Gray and Bergvall eventually fit into a midfield together, with both arguably having that pivot role as their best position.

Bergvall first name on the team sheet

Talking of Lucas Bergvall – he was the one player who really made a difference off the bench again today. Both Heung-min Son and James Maddison created chances after coming on, but it was Bergvall who completely transformed the pace of the game with his driving runs and line-breaking passes.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Whatever happens this season, one of Tottenham’s biggest victories of 2024/25 is unearthing this gem and fast-tracking his route into the starting XI. He is miles ahead of Bissouma and Bentancur in the pecking order now, and perhaps even above Sarr and Gray when it comes to midfield too. He was perhaps unlucky not to get a penalty to haul Spurs back into the game today too, and would have been a deserved hero. Exciting times are ahead for Bergvall and Tottenham fans!

Mathys Tel looks more comfortable on the wing

Let’s be honest, it was not a career-defining performance from Mathys Tel by any stretch of the imagination. However, he did show more bright sparks against Fulham than in any of his matches in the number nine role at Tottenham so far.

Tel finally got a chance to feel his way into the game and take on defenders with time and space, which is such an integral part of his game. He even went close to scoring with a curling left-footed effort in the second half, which would have been a much-needed boost for the Bayern Munich man. Hopefully, we can see him get some more minutes on the left and right of attack in the coming months, rotated with Son and Wilson Odobert.

Ryan Sessegnon… fair enough

When it rains, it pours at Tottenham Hotspur. Of course, the injury-prone Ryan Sessegnon who spent five years in North London but only ever played 57 times for Spurs came off the bench and scored – assisted by a goalkeeper, no less. And it was a great finish too!

Tottenham player ratings vs Fulham – 2/10 midfielder sinks like a stone

Description

Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Fulham at Craven Cottage this afternoon, sending Ange Postecoglou into the international break with a lot to think about.

Below, we have given each Spurs player a rating on a scale of 0-10 based on their performance in the London derby away to Fulham.

Tottenham Hotspur player ratings vs Fulham:

Guglielmo Vicario – 5

The Tottenham goalkeeper didn’t have a whole lot to do against the Cottagers, such was the scrappy nature of the London derby. Very little he could do about the goal.

Djed Spence – 4

A familiar pattern seems to be emerging that Spence is far more effective as an inverted left-back than a natural right-back. Perhaps lucky not to give away a penalty for a push on Raul Jimenez. Played pretty well until the final few minutes when he gave up completely in defence and let Ryan Sessegnon go.

Cristian Romero – 4

Romero was in one of those moods today, more intent on stepping out of defence and snapping at the opposition than marshalling his back line. When you’re half a yard short of sharpness, it really shows.

Ben Davies – 4

Davies is so often solid and uneventful. For the most part, that was the case again today. He made lots of good headed clearances throughout. Unfortunately, he got outmuscled by Ryan Sessegnon for Fulham’s second goal which killed the game.

Destiny Udogie – 5

Back into the XI at left-back against Fulham, Udogie looked full of energy but rarely found a chance to actually put it to good use. The game was so scrappy, Spurs barely got in down the left side at all. Looked much better in the second half but still lacked an end product.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Rodrigo Bentancur – 3

As one of Tottenham’s more experienced players, you just expect so much more from Bentancur. Sloppy on the ball and didn’t match the energy of the Fulham midfielders off it. Rumours are Spurs are in talks with Bentancur over a new contract, but he isn’t showing that kind of form.

Archie Gray – 6

For the first time in a long time, Archie Gray was back in a familiar midfield role. He thrived when bouncing the ball around to keep Spurs ticking over but looked a little rusty when it came to build-up play and defensive positioning at times. Just a case of needing more minutes there.

Yves Bissouma – 2

Shockingly poor once again from Bissouma. Off the ball, he was rash and showed poor positioning. On the ball, his passing was all over the place. He could soon find himself below Gray, Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison, Sarr, and Kulusevski in the midfield pecking order. Bissouma was rightly hooked at half-time.

Mathys Tel – 5

Started on the wing today rather than the number nine role. It was still a quiet game from Tel but he at least showed a couple of flashes of creativity with some impressive runs off the wing. Early indications are that he looks more comfortable there for the time being.

Dominic Solanke – 5

Did his best to hold the ball up and bring others into play but he was feeding off scraps and rarely got the ball in Fulham’s half. Solanke missed the creativity of Maddison and Kulusevski out there. Had a couple of headers just wide in the second half but missed a golden chance set up by Maddison.

Brennan Johnson – 3

Did not get into the game at all. Brennan Johnson has been clinical with the timing of his runs and back post finishing this season, but has been worryingly ineffective between those moments on the ball.

Substitutes:

Lucas Bergvall – 7 – Came on and added real drive to Tottenham. First name on the team sheet in midfield these days.

Heung-min Son – 6 – Looked so dangerous in the first 20 minutes after coming on, but soon fizzled out.

James Maddison – 5.5 – Got 25 minutes off the bench and should have had an assist to Solanke.

Tottenham half-time player ratings vs Fulham: 2/10 for dreadful midfielder

Description

The first half of action has just come to a close between Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage.

Tottenham kept their season alive on Thursday with a 3-1 victory against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League which booked their passage through to the quarter final.

Back in December, Spurs drew 1-1 with Fulham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Brennan Johnson’s goal was cancelled out by Tom Cairney, who was later sent off.

Ange Postecoglou’s side headed into the dressing room level at 0-0 after a really poor first half display where the midfield has especially struggled.

Below, we have given each Tottenham player a performance rating on a scale of 0-10, with 10 highest score achievable.

Here’s how the players rated:

Guglielmo Vicario – 6

A passenger.

Djed Spence – 5

Took a slight risk when he put both hands on Jimenez inside the box. Has had plenty to do with most of the play coming down his flank.

Cristian Romero – 6

Found himself outmuscled by Bassey, who easily shrugged him to the ground. Blocked a shot on goal from Iwobi.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Ben Davies – 5

Making his 350th appearance for Spurs today. Counting his lucky stars when he nearly gifted Fulham an equaliser when he tried to intercept a ball which was easily on its way to Vicario.

Destiny Udogie – 4

Back in the side and has been guilty of turning the ball over on more than one occasion.

Rodrigo Bentancur – 4

Asked to play in the advanced midfield role and has had little impact.

Yves Bissouma – 2

Given a chance to come back into the side ahead of the likes of Lucas Bergvall, his pass which went out of play sums up his performance. A likely second-half replacement.

Archie Gray – 6

A rare midfield start for the teenager, who has operated in the number six role.

Brennan Johnson – 3

Absolutely zero impact, Wilson Odobert must be frustrated to drop out of the team to witness this.

Dominic Solanke – 6

Has had a physical battle on his hands up against Bassey, no clear cut chances have come the striker’s way.

Mathys Tel – 5

Made a nice jinking run down the left on 20 minutes, but was unable to find Solanke in the middle.
