Mauricio Pochettino: Tottenham return more likely as USA embarrassed by Belgium ahead of World Cup

Mauricio Pochettino returning to Tottenham Hotspur looks more likely than ever after USA were thrashed by Belgium on Saturday.

The Argentine has already been under mounting pressure in the build-up to the 2026 World Cup, and fans’ anger is bound to be at an all-time high after his side lost 5-2 on 28 March.

Weston McKennie opened the scoring for the Americans, but with Rudi Garcia’s side turning on the style in the second half, Pochettino and his players were completely embarrassed in their own backyard.

Pochettino continues to be linked with Tottenham, with Igor Tudor expected to be sacked before the end of the season, but it still seems unlikely that the 54-year-old makes the switch before the World Cup.

Mauricio Pochettino is under crushing pressure ahead of the World Cup

Supporters and pundits are expecting Pochettino to either be sacked or walk away should his side struggle at their own World Cup, with the tournament also taking place in Canada and Mexico.

Given USA’s performance against Belgium this weekend, with just three friendlies against Portugal, Senegal and Germany remaining until the competition, that is looking extremely likely.

The odds on Pochettino returning to Spurs had already been slashed due to the crushing pressure on Tudor, and a switch back to North London makes total sense for all parties.

Pochettino remains a much-loved figure at Hotspur Way, but a return after seven years away likely depends on Spurs’ league status at the end of the 2025-26 campaign.

Tottenham have no-brainer decision over next manager

Roberto De Zerbi also remains heavily linked with a move, but the former Brighton figure is also holding out to take over in the summer, if reports are to be believed.

Football Insider understands that Tudor is set to leave within days, having lost five of his seven games in charge, so the Lilywhites would have to appoint another interim coach in order to wait for Pochettino.

It feels inevitable that the Argentine is going to be sacked by the USA national team, with his side showing very few signs of putting up a fight in the upcoming World Cup.

Tottenham next manager: Sean Dyche appointment will lead to Spurs’ relegation

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering appointing Sean Dyche to lead them to Premier League survival.

The former Nottingham Forest manager was only dismissed at the City Ground in February, but could quickly find himself back in the dugout.

Igor Tudor’s reign clearly has not worked out, and Spurs are now considering Dyche in the hopes he can save the club.

However, his record against Tottenham’s upcoming opponents is dire and would surely lead to their relegation.

Below, Football Insider has examined why a Dyche Tottenham appointment would end in disaster.

Sean Dyche struggled against Tottenham’s upcoming opponents at Nottingham Forest

While Dyche’s sacking at Forest was widely criticised, his record in the final month of his reign was poor.

The East Midlands side were edging closer and closer to the relegation zone, with West Ham United finally starting to pick up points.

Many of the results were damning as well, with Forest even unable to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at the City Ground, despite the club being bottom of the Premier League.

While he was able to produce some decent wins, Tottenham simply cannot consider him for the final seven matches of the season.

While at Forest, Dyche came up against five of these seven teams, only failing to face Sunderland and Chelsea.

In these eight matches, he lost five, with his only points being against Wolves, winning one and drawing the other meeting, and a victory at home to Leeds United.

If this is replicated, it would surely result in Tottenham’s relegation, even if they somehow beat both Sunderland and Chelsea.

Therefore, if Spurs are to sack Tudor, they must look at other options aside from Dyche.

Could Tottenham still appoint Roberto De Zerbi?

Ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider that Tottenham may appoint another interim manager in order to wait for Roberto De Zerbi in the summer.

The Italian appears reluctant to join Spurs at present, given their current battle for relegation.

Therefore, Tottenham may look to give another coach the last seven games to try and save the club before De Zerbi comes in during the summer.

However, with this, there are plenty of risks, especially if Tottenham do go down, as the Italian may not fancy managing the club in the Championship.

Tottenham ‘blame game going on internally’ as ‘difficult’ managerial decision looms

Tottenham Hotspur’s decision makers at the top of the club need to prove their worth in their next managerial decision.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Spurs are a “very unhappy” club right now.

Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has recently slammed the running of Spurs under Daniel Levy to the club’s Fan Advisory Board.

Meanwhile, there is pressure on sporting director Johan Lange’s role at the club due to managerial decisions and recruitment in the summer and January transfer windows.

Interim boss Igor Tudor is expected to be sacked by Spurs, leaving the club searching for their third manager of the season in the midst of a fight to remain in the Premier League.

Tottenham face ‘issues’ from Daniel Levy tenure

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes there are “a lot of questions” that still need to be answered from Levy’s time in north London.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks there could be a “blame game” going on behind the scenes.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Look, Vinai at the top seems to be the one that’s being left to make the decisions.

“And I think that there could well be a blame game that’s going on internally. So it’s not happy at the top. Obviously, it seems to be very unhappy.

“There are lots of issues around still from the Daniel Levy tenure and what really went on there. A lot of things, a lot of questions, and it’s a very unhappy environment.

“This would just compound it beyond belief if they had to face that battle [relegation]. So, yes, the new manager is going to be a key component, and it’s a difficult decision, and they’ve got to step up to the plate and tackle that one head on.”

Tottenham have shortlist of managerial contenders

Wyness also told Football Insider that Spurs could settle on Sean Dyche to become their next manager in a bid to save them from Premier League relegation.

Spurs have also been linked with Roberto De Zerbi and Adi Hutter, with top target Mauricio Pochettino not currently available.

Dyche has vast Premier League experience, and is currently available for work having been sacked by Nottingham Forest in February.

Roberto De Zerbi: Tottenham’s top target has doubts due to relegation threat

Roberto De Zerbi is having doubts about becoming the next Tottenham Hotspur manager, sources have told Football Insider.

Sources say the boss is reluctant to take over in the middle of a relegation battle and would prefer to wait until the summer before accepting his next role.

Tottenham have begun searching for their next manager as they prepare to part company with Igor Tudor, and the former Brighton boss is high on their list.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Spurs are facing difficulties convincing the 46-year-old to take over immediately.

That could force Tottenham to appoint another interim manager to see them through to the end of the season in the hope of surviving the relegation battle.

Roberto De Zerbi uncertain about taking Tottenham role

Football Insider revealed on 24 March that De Zerbi is Tottenham’s top target to replace Tudor as they prepare to part ways with their interim boss.

The former Brighton manager’s availability has put them on alert as they hope he will step in immediately, but new concerns have emerged about his willingness.

De Zerbi would prefer to take charge in the summer when Spurs know their fate as they remain one point above the relegation zone with seven games to play.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “De Zerbi is somebody that obviously Spurs are very much interested in, whether it’s now or at end of the season.

“A lot will depend on Tottenham securing Premier League survival.

“It does seem Tottenham would like De Zerbi to come in now, but he’s in no rush right now.

“He would prefer to wait and weigh up his options and probably come into a new job at the end of the season where he can have a full pre-season with his new club and everything else.

“Obviously he’s just left Marseille in February so he’s in no immediate rush to return to the dugout.

“He’s one of a number of candidates that Spurs have looked at, but with the situation they find themselves in, it’s difficult to attract their top targets.”

When will Tottenham part ways with Igor Tudor?

Tottenham are accelerating plans to part ways with Tudor in the wake of their 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest which has left them one place above the relegation zone.

The 47-year-old’s tenure in North London has not gone to plan after he was brought in to replace Thomas Frank with the goal of guiding them away from relegation.

As a result, Football Insider revealed on 27 March that Tudor will leave Tottenham by mutual consent in the near future as all parties are keen to move on.

The interim boss has won just one of his seven games in charge, and picked up just one point in the Premier League, as he has failed to lead them to safety.

The international break is seen as the ideal opportunity to bring in a replacement ahead of Spurs’ next league game against Sunderland on 12 April.

Igor Tudor set to leave Tottenham by ‘mutual consent’ within days

Igor Tudor is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur by mutual consent in the near future as they accelerate plans to replace the boss during the international break.

The 47-year-old’s tenure in North London has not gone to plan after he was brought in to replace Thomas Frank with the goal of guiding them away from relegation.

After a heavy 3-0 defeat to relegation rivals Nottingham Forest last time out, Spurs remain just one point above the bottom three and rivals West Ham.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Tudor accepts that his appointment has not gone to plan and is prepared to leave.

That will leave Tottenham scrambling to appoint a new manager, with a number of options both short-term and long-term being assessed behind the scenes.

Igor Tudor close to leaving Tottenham

Football Insider revealed on 24 March that Tottenham are planning to sack Tudor, and while the decision has been delayed, it remains part of their plans.

The interim boss has won just one of his seven games in charge, and picked up just one point in the Premier League, as he has failed to lead them to safety.

The international break is seen as the ideal opportunity to bring in a replacement ahead of Spurs’ next league game against Sunderland on 12 April.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, it does look like it’s inevitable that Tudor will lose his job during the international break.

“Maybe not ‘sacked’ necessarily, I think there’ll be a mutual consent agreement that it hasn’t worked out for either party.

“They’ve just won one of his seven games in charge and are one point above the relegation zone.

“So he hasn’t had the desired effect that Tottenham thought he would do when they brought him in as an interim manager until the end of the season.”

Who could Spurs appoint to replace Tudor?

Work is already underway to identify the next Tottenham manager, despite having initially planned to assess the situation in the summer after Tudor’s departure.

His imminent early dismissal has forced the club to accelerate their plans, with the likes of Roberto De Zerbi emerging as candidates for the position.

However, former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Tottenham could “settle on” Sean Dyche to drag them away from trouble this late in the season.

The boss’ previous experience of guiding relegation-threatened clubs away from trouble at Everton and Burnley has made him a key option.

There are doubts about whether he would be prepared to take the job, though, having left Nottingham Forest just last month as he was replaced by Vitor Pereira.

Sean Dyche an ‘option’ for Tottenham job

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks the appointment of Tudor has turned out to be a “slight mistake.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes the club should now be looking for a manager with Premier League experience.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “They’ll be working on it (hiring a new manager), of course, but I think if I was there, I’d be trying to get someone with hands-on experience of the Premier League in there rather than bringing anybody else in, which I think maybe Tudor was a slight mistake.

“I’d have gone for a Premier League experience and, therefore, it leads us to the question, is Sean Dyche going to come back and do that job for them again? I think he may well be the option that they settle on.”

Complications emerge in Roberto De Zerbi pursuit

Wyness also told Football Insider that Spurs could appoint a manager on a short-term basis if target Roberto De Zerbi does not wish to join until the end of the season.

De Zerbi may be interested in the Spurs job, but only if he can wait until the end of the season and find out whether the club remain in the Premier League.

The Italian does have Premier League experience with Brighton, and has been out of work since mutually agreeing to leave Marseille in February.

Tottenham face ‘problems down the road’ as Stefan Borson analyses spending plans

Tottenham Face ‘Problems Down the Road’ as Stefan Borson Analyses Spending Plans - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are facing “problems down the road” as a result of failing to qualify for European football this season.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider Spurs need to invest more this summer following their on-field issues.

Tottenham are at risk of being relegated from the Premier League after slipping to fourth bottom following their 3-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest.

However, the north London giants did reach the last 16 of the Champions League before being knocked out by Atletico Madrid.

Tottenham’s finances will receive a healthy boost after reaching the knock-out rounds, but missing out on Europe altogether this season will create a hole in their accounts.

What failing to qualify for Europe means for Tottenham

Football Insider revealed on 19 March Tottenham earned £71.6million in prize money from the Champions League this season.

That is likely to see Spurs’ revenue increase for 2025-26, with Deloitte’s 2026 Money League revealing the club’s turnover surged from £528m in 2023-24 to £565m last season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed the financial issues Tottenham could soon be facing.

“The problems are down the road,” said Borson.

“This is another team that’s not qualifying for the Champions League, that’s for sure. They are not qualifying for the Europa League, that’s for sure, so Europe’s gone next season.

“We know about all the commercial issues they’ve got and then on top of that, let’s assume they stay in the Premier League and then on top of that, I think their costs are going to be quite a bit higher next season if they stay in the Premier League because I think they’re going to invest.”

How Tottenham plan to increase spending

Borson insisted Tottenham are planning to spend following Daniel Levy’s exit last September.

“I don’t think they’re going to be able to have three years of this bottom of the league kind of potential relegation battle,” said Borson.

“That’s just not going to work for anybody. You don’t get rid of Daniel Levy and then not start to spend more money, so I think that’s what’s going to happen.

“I think this is going to be a bumper year financially, but the problems are down the road.”

The likes of Callum Olusesi and Junai Byfield are earning valuable minutes in and around the first team, despite the current situation at the bottom of the league table.

In addition to the duo, James Wilson, on loan from Hearts, could be signed permanently at the end of the season, having notched two goals in five matches for the Under-21s.

There is a clear path through to the first team from the academy, while the likes of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall are both being given chances to shine on some of the biggest stages.

What does the future hold for Mikey Moore?

Mikey Moore is currently one of the Lilywhites’ most exciting prospects, having gone out on loan to Rangers and shone in the Scottish Premiership this season.

In 40 appearances, the tricky winger has notched six goals and three assists, bagging his latest goal contribution in the 4-1 demolition of Aberdeen on Saturday, 21 March.

Keith Wyness told Football Insider that Rangers will be unable to sign Moore permanently, even if manager Danny Rohl wants to, which suggests a return to North London is upcoming.

Robin Risser: Newcastle ahead of Tottenham in race for deal as key to £34.5m deal revealed - Football Insider
Description

Robin Risser: Newcastle lead Tottenham in transfer race to complete £34.5m summer deal

Robin Risser is a more likely signing for Newcastle United than Tottenham Hotspur as they bid to find a new number one goalkeeper this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

Both clubs are in the market for the addition of a new stopper ahead of next season, but the Magpies hold a clear edge in the race for the 21-year-old Lens star, as they are more likely to qualify for European football.

The starlet has been identified as a clear candidate for the Tynesiders, but sources say that a deal could be “difficult” for them to strike without Champions League football, due to the fact that Lens are on course to qualify in Ligue 1.

The French side are under little pressure to sell the 21-year-old at the moment, as they are pushing PSG all the way in the title race, and as a result, they are holding out for a fee of around £34.5million to sanction a sale.

Newcastle’s transfer plans have seen a new goalkeeper emerge as one of their key priorities ahead of 2026-27, but if Lens qualify for the Champions League themselves, then a deal may not come easily.

Newcastle clear of Tottenham in Robin Risser race

Risser has been one of Ligue 1’s standout goalkeepers so far this season, as his tally of 10 clean sheets is currently higher than any other player in the division.

The France U21 international is developing a big reputation for himself in his country’s top-flight, and he has been integral to his team’s efforts to fight their way towards the top of the table this term.

Naturally, that has resulted in Premier League interest, with Tottenham also viewing him as a candidate to don their number one shirt next term, according to Jeunes Footeux.

The Lilywhites are casting their net out to try and find a replacement for the outgoing Guglielmo Vicario, but the uncertainty surrounding their position in the Premier League could provide problems for them.

Newcastle are the more likely candidates to strike a deal for Risser at the moment, but even their chances look set to hinge on the Champions League outcomes at both St James’ and Lens.

Magpies’ board take fresh Eddie Howe sack stance

Football Insider revealed on Monday that the Newcastle board remain firmly behind Eddie Howe, despite a tumultuous week that has seen calls for him to be sacked increase.

The club hierarchy remain conviced that he is the right man for the job, even after a heavy defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League, and a crushing loss to bitter rivals Sunderland last weekend.

Howe has led the North East outfit into the Champions League in two of the last three seasons, while last year’s Carabao Cup triumph was also their first major domestic trophy since 1955.

The boss is said to have plenty of credit in the bank as a result, although it has already been made clear that next year’s remit is to qualify for European football.

However, Howe looks set to be the man to lead that charge in 2026-27 once again, despite the presure that has built up from certain sections of the fanbase.

Tottenham set to sack Igor Tudor in next 24 hours, Roberto De Zerbi top target to replace him - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are set to sack Igor Tudor within the next 24 to 48 hours, sources have told Football Insider.

Roberto De Zerbi has been identified as the Lilywhites’ top target to replace the outgoing interim boss, provided that the club can convince him to take the job immediately, rather than at the end of the season.

Tudor has been facing significant pressure in North London in recent weeks, but sources have now indicated that the board have decided that last weekend’s 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest was the final straw.

Spurs are now just one point clear of the relegation zone heading into the final seven games of the season, and the hierarchy have decided that another change in the dugout is necessary.

De Zerbi is Tottenham’s leading managerial candidate at the moment, but any deal is likely to depend on his desire to return to management immediately.

Tottenham board settle on another managerial change

Tottenham’s relegation fears have been growing with every passing game of late, and the board have now decided that enough is enough where Tudor is concerned.

The team had shown signs of life under his guidance with a 1-1 draw at Liverpool followed by victory over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie, but optimism quickly evaporated with the defeat to Forest.

Tudor is set to leave his post at the helm of the North London outfit, having taken just one point from his five Premier League games in charge, and with three of those games ending in defeats by two goals or more.

Tottenham are now winless in their last 13 league games, with their most recent domestic victory coming away at Crystal Palace way back on 28 December.

They are now staring down the barrel of an unprecedented relegation into the Championship after their defeat to Forest, a result which has propelled Vitor Pereira’s side two points above Spurs in the table.

The likes of Harry Redknapp, Glenn Hoddle and Tim Sherwood have all been tipped to take over from Tudor in recent weeks, but the responsibility is now set to fall on De Zerbi if a deal can be struck.

Spurs fans explode over Roberto De Zerbi news

Tottenham fans have exploded over the De Zerbi news in recent hours, with several taking to social media to make their frustrations known towards the board.

The potential appointment is not set to be a popular one in the eyes of the fanbase, with one supporter taking to X to suggest that the former Brighton boss has the “ego of Antonio Conte and the ability of Thomas Frank.”

The Italian chief has been out of work since he left French side Marseille by mutual consent back in February, but could now be about to step back into a Premier League dugout.

De Zerbi led Brighton to European qualification for the first time in their history thanks to a sixth-placed finish back in 2022-23, and Tottenham are hopeful that he will be able to spark the upturn that is needed for them to stay in the league.
