Thomas Frank: Ex-Tottenham manager tipped to join Premier League club as betting odds slashed - Football Insider
Description

Thomas Frank has emerged in the running to take over from Scott Parker at Burnley – almost three months after he was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur.

The Dane’s tenure in North London went horrifically wrong, with his former team now in with a strong chance of relegation under Roberto De Zerbi.

Frank had arrived at Tottenham with a terrific reputation following his time at Brentford, but Premier League jobs will now be hard to come by.

Burnley’s relegation from the top flight was confirmed last week, with Parker mutually agreeing to step down at Turf Moor.

With Frank among the options to take over from the Englishman, Tottenham’s relegation could see them face off against their former manager next season.

Thomas Frank in race to join Burnley

Football Insider exclusively revealed in April that Celtic have set their sights on Frank this summer, with the manager’s reputation clearly still somewhat intact.

The Dane had been so successful at Brentford, taking them from mid-table in the Championship to an established Premier League side in seven years.

Frank made the Gtech Community Stadium a place that even the best Premier League sides feared travelling to, and his side were gutsy and exciting to watch.

The Tottenham move appeared to come at the right time, and the early signs were positive. The Lilywhites took PSG all the way in the Super Cup, and beat Manchester City at the Etihad in their second Premier League game.

Defeat to Bournemouth was a warning sign, but after 11 games of Frank’s tenure, his side had lost just once in normal time.

Few could have predicted the dismal months that would follow, with Tottenham winning just three more Premier League games in the four months leading up to his dismissal.

But decision-makers at Burnley will chiefly see a manager capable of rebuilding a Championship team, and that is what they are interested in.

One major bookmaker has slashed Frank’s odds of taking over the Clarets to 13/2, while the leaders remain Steven Gerrard (8/11) and Brian Barry-Murphy (7/2).

Frank will hope to see Tottenham stay up

Frank will likely be hoping that Tottenham stay in the Premier League this season for a couple of reasons.

Should they go down, the Dane will be heavily associated with one of the most iconic relegations in top-flight history.

And further, should the 52-year-old move to Burnley or another Championship club this summer, he will face a return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Frank has undoubtedly heard unwelcoming atmospheres before, but he will not have experienced anything like the fury that Tottenham fans will unleash on that day.

Joao Palhinha to leave Bayern Munich but Tottenham move is up in the air

Joao Palhinha to leave Bayern Munich but Tottenham move is up in the air - Football Insider
Description

Joao Palhinha has no future at Bayern Munich and so Tottenham could succeed in their plan to sign him for a lesser fee than his current option to buy clause.

Bayern sent Palhinha out on loan to Spurs last summer after he struggled to nail down a consistent starting place following a move from Fulham a year before.

The 30-year-old midfielder has had an impact in North London this season, but has again failed to start regularly as they battle against a shock relegation.

Tottenham want to renegotiate the fee to sign him permanently if they stay up, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, with Bayern keen to sell Palhinha as he is not in Kompany’s plans for next term.

Tottenham’s transfer plans will be dictated by their future in the Premier League, with the Portugal midfielder only likely to stay if they avoid relegation.

Joao Palhinha has no future at Bayern as Tottenham aim to renegotiate his permanent fee

Palhinha was regarded as one of the best holding midfielders in the Premier League during his time at Fulham, but his stocks have fallen in the last two seasons.

Spurs’ fanbase remains divided over signing him this summer, with the club encouraged to try and lower his transfer fee to secure his services permanently as Bayern seek a sale.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “I think it’s pretty certain that he doesn’t have a long term future at Bayern Munich.

“He’s under contract until 2028, but he’s well down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena. I don’t see any way back for him to break into Vincent Kompany’s plans.

“He started the season off pretty well for Tottenham and was a regular starter, but then has probably found himself out of favour since the turn of the year.

“Everything’s open right now. Spurs don’t know what they can and can’t do in the transfer market due to they don’t know what league they’re going to be in.

“If Spurs stay up and they can renegotiate that buy option, then there’s a real opportunity that Palhinha could extend to stay.”

Tottenham have no plans to let Lucas Bergvall leave amid Premier League interest

Bergvall has started alongside Palhinha in several games for Spurs this season as he continues to impress despite their poor showings as a team.

The Swedish midfielder is reportedly attracting the attention of Aston Villa and Chelsea ahead of the summer window as Spurs battle relegation.

Sources have, however, revealed to Football Insider that Tottenham do not want to sell Bergvall this summer regardless of whether they stay up or not.

It will be on him and his representatives to force a move away if he wishes to continue his career elsewhere next season.

Tottenham: ‘German contacts’ reveal latest in bid to hire Sebastian Kehl as new sporting director

Tottenham: 'German contacts' reveal latest in bid to hire Sebastian Kehl as new sporting director - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham’s search for a new sporting director could continue as Sebastian Kehl is unlikely to want the job.

That is the view of former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who has heard that Kehl could instead stay in Germany and join Hamburg.

The 46-year-old is available for work having left his role as sporting director at Borussia Dortmund in March after four years in the role.

Spurs lost sporting director Fabio Paratici at the end of the January transfer window, with the Italian having worked alongside Johan Lange.

Lange faces an uncertain future at Spurs as he was one of the key figures in appointing Igor Tudor as interim manager in February, and the club faces a battle to remain in the Premier League.

Sebastian Kehl ‘won’t be touching Tottenham job with a barge pole’

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes working with Lange could be one of the downfalls of Kehl joining Spurs.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks the “instability” at the north London club does not make it an attractive proposition for the German.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “He left Borussia Dortmund earlier this year, and they had a decent record there.

“I did call up one of my German contacts who said he was more likely to go to Hamburg. With the Spurs situation, walking into that, you’d be thinking twice coming into the Premier League right now.

“Not just in terms of the position in the table and the potential of going into the Championship, but also because of the boardroom situation, the instability, and you’d have to work with Johan Lange.

“That has proven not to work over the last couple of seasons. So I don’t think he’ll be touching it with a barge pole, to be honest, from what I’m hearing, and he may end up at Hamburg.”

Daniel Levy termination fee revealed

Instability in the boardroom at Spurs has stemmed from the departure of executive chairman Daniel Levy last September.

The 64-year-old still has an indirect investment in the club through a share in ENIC, which he has been trying to sell for up to £1billion.

Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson told Football Insider that Spurs likely paid Levy millions of pounds following his departure.

The exact figure will not be known until Spurs release their next set of financial accounts, whilst Levy’s former ally, Donna Cullen, was paid £6.6million after she left last summer.

James Tavernier tipped to make Tottenham move after Rangers exit confirmed: ‘That’s where I expect him to go’

James Tavernier could join Tottenham next season if the north London club suffer relegation to the Championship.

That is the view of former Aberdeen and Everton chief Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who can see Tavernier joining a club who can challenge in the Championship.

It comes as the 34-year-old will be a free agent in the summer after 11 years at Rangers, with the Glasgow club deciding against offering Tavernier a new contract.

Tavernier started his career at Newcastle, and had multiple loan spells in the EFL before moving to Rangers, where he was known for being an attacking full-back.

Both Rangers and Spurs will be rebuilding their squads this summer, with the Premier League side potentially dropping into the second tier for the first time since 1978.

James Tavernier ‘can play a very good role’ at Tottenham

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that Wolves have also shown interest in signing Tavernier.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness says that he is “not surprised” to see Spurs exploring the possibility of signing Tavernier this summer.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There’s talk about is it Spurs, or is it Wolves?

“They’re talking about having him come down because he is the type of player that, if Spurs are relegated, you would need and want in the Championship. This is exactly what I mean about putting together a squad to be in the Championship, and Tavernier can play a very good role for a season or two in a club that’s challenging in the Championship.

“That’s where I would place him, and he could still have a very good payday and a good contract. I’m surprised he hasn’t gone before because I rate him, and he’s a character and a good personality.

“That’s where I expect him to turn up. I was not surprised to see Spurs thinking about him, if they went down, because he’s exactly the type of player that could be there. So we’ll see where he goes.”

Tottenham could be beaten to Tavernier signing

Spurs and Wolves could be left disappointed as they will face plenty of competition for Tavernier’s signature from European and Saudi clubs.

Sources have told Football Insider that Tavernier could reject a move to England to relocate to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi clubs could have a stronger financial pull than either Spurs or Wolves, but current conflict in the Middle East could be a factor against making the move for Tavernier.

Sides in Greece and Turkey could also pursue the defender, who has four Rangers matches left to play before he leaves Ibrox.

Joao Palhinha: Tottenham in negotiations over permanent transfer as pundits ‘tear him apart’

Joao Palhinha is currently considered likely to make the permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur despite growing criticisms of his performances.

The 30-year-old has struggled to live up to expectations in what has been a miserable season for Spurs, but remains keen to stick around if they stay up.

His winning goal against Wolves last time out secured their first three points of 2026, and there is a belief he could turn his Spurs career around under Roberto De Zerbi.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Palhinha’s permanent move could depend on the fee involved, but negotiations are taking place in the background.

Spurs will make a final decision on the Portugal international’s future after the season ends, but are already putting plans in place for the transfer window.

Could Tottenham sign Joao Palhinha permanently?

Football Insider revealed at the start of the season that Tottenham planned to sign Palhinha permanently at the end of his loan spell in North London.

However, Thomas Frank was believed at the time to be driving the deal, and his departure has raised questions about whether a deal will be agreed.

He has still played a role under De Zerbi so far, though, and strong performances between now and the end of the season could see him join permanently.

“I thought Palhinha would be an excellent signing for Tottenham,” Brown told Football Insider.

“After what he showed at Fulham, earning that move to Bayern Munich, I expected him to come back in and show that again at Tottenham.

“I must admit, that has not gone to plan for him or for Tottenham. Every time I listen to pundits speaking about him, they tear him apart.

“Jamie Carragher, for example, said he hasn’t got the quality to play in the Premier League, and I thought that was harsh based on the things I’ve seen.

“But from Tottenham’s point of view, they can’t listen to what pundits are saying, they’re going to make a decision about him at the end of the season.

“If they stay in the Premier League, I’m sure he will want to make the move, and the manager will assess his squad to see what they can do.

“From what I’ve heard, they’ve already been in negotiations behind the scenes, maybe to bring the price down or find a deal that suits them a bit better.

“So with Tottenham at the moment you just have to wait and see, but they have to make decisions based on their own views, not those of people outside the club.”

What other plans are Tottenham making for the summer?

Given their current situation, it appears strange that plans are already being put in place by Tottenham for the summer transfer window, with optimistic deals lined up.

Palhinha’s permanent signing will likely only take place if they can survive the relegation battle, but there are other deals also being lined up in the background.

Football Insider reported on 17 April that Tottenham are in advanced talks with Marcos Senesi, to sign the Bournemouth star on a free transfer this summer.

It has also been reported that Tottenham have an agreement with Liverpool star Andy Robertson, who will also join on a free, but only if they can stay up.

De Zerbi’s side are currently in the relegation zone with just four games left to play, with two points separating them from West Ham and five from Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham left reeling by ‘huge’ Xavi Simons blow – ‘it gets worse for Spurs fans’ - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi will feel the loss of Xavi Simons after the midfielder suffered a season-ending injury.

That is the view of former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, after Simons ruptured his ACL against Wolves.

The 23-year-old had to be stretchered off in the second half of the game, to add to Spurs’ mounting injury list.

Spurs though managed to grab an important late winner against Wolves, thanks to Joao Palhinha, which keeps them within touching distance of Premier League safety.

De Zerbi could be missing up to 10 players through injury when Spurs travel to Aston Villa next, with Simons potentially not returning until 2027.

Tottenham have ‘bad luck’ after Xavi Simons blow

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has “sympathy” for Spurs over their injury situation.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness believes Simons was one Spurs player who had started well under De Zerbi’s management.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Absolutely massive.

“Coming off the back of the Cristian Romero injury as well. It just shows you that Simons was a player full of energy, really doing well, starting to come into it.

“He had obviously responded to De Zerbi, and played well in the last game. So yes, a huge blow for Spurs. It’s just getting worse and worse for the Spurs fans.

“I have sympathy with that because this is really an outlier of clubs in terms of injuries, it’s bad luck for them.”

Tottenham to block Lucas Bergvall exit

Sources have told Football Insider that Spurs have no plans to allow Lucas Bergvall to leave the club amid interest from Aston Villa.

Bergvall, who is under contract in north London until 2031, could remain at the club in the Championship, if Spurs are relegated.

That could be important for Spurs with Simons’ long-term absence, and Palhinha to return to Bayern Munich at the end of his loan spell.

There will also be doubts over the fitness of James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevksi and whether the pair can return to form having sat out the entirety of this season with injuries.

Xavi Simons: Tottenham make new transfer plan as ‘serious’ injury news emerges

Xavi Simons is set to be sidelined for a significant period after his latest injury, forcing Tottenham Hotspur to reconsider their transfer plans.

The 23-year-old suffered a cruciate ligament injury during the 1-0 win against Wolves and is expected to be ruled out until 2027 after undergoing surgery.

That has come as a significant blow to Roberto De Zerbi’s side and their chances of staying in the Premier League, but transfer plans are already being made.

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Tottenham now know they will have to replace Simons regardless of whether or not they remain in the top flight.

This comes as James Maddison edges closer to a return to fitness, but doubts about his long-term future could force Tottenham into the transfer market this summer.

Tottenham could be forced to sign Xavi Simons replacement

Football Insider shared reports on 24 April that Bayern Munich have looked at Simons, while Man United are also believed to be among his admirers.

As a result, Tottenham may already have been planning to lose the attacking midfielder, with potential replacements already in mind ahead of the transfer window.

However, those plans may now be accelerated with his injury leaving a significant hole in the squad, particularly if doubts about Maddison linger.

“This serious injury to Xavi Simons is a big blow for Tottenham,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Plus, they’ve got the added problem of James Maddison, who has had the same injury and is still a way off being involved, even though he’s been on the bench.

“The question for him after he does recover is whether he’ll want to stay if Tottenham go down.

“That would leave them without any options in that position, just like they’ve got at the moment, so they’ll have to look in the transfer market.

“I believe that’s something they will have been doing anyway, looking at replacements, because there is a possibility that both of them would’ve moved on.

“But now, regardless of what happens in the league, they’re going to need to bring somebody in because his injury will leave a big hole in the side.”

What is next for James Maddison at Tottenham?

Simons injury comes at a time when Spurs are already struggling for options in his position as Maddison has been sidelined, leading to long-term concerns.

Maddison suffered the same injury as Simons last year, and has missed the entirety of the season, despite being included on the bench against Brighton and Wolves.

Despite having yet to feature this season, there has been speculation that the attacking midfielder could leave Tottenham if they are relegated.

Brown told Football Insider last month that Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Maddison’s recovery and could make a move if they are shown promising signs.

They are not the only club interested in case Spurs go down, however, and his departure on top of Simons’ injury would pile the pressure on Tottenham to act.

Tottenham paid ‘millions’ to axe Daniel Levy as termination fee revealed

Tottenham Paid ‘Millions’ to Axe Daniel Levy as Termination Fee Revealed - Football Insider
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to have paid Daniel Levy millions of pounds following his exit last year.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the former Spurs executive chairman could have been owed a “very significant” payout.

Levy left his position at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last September, having spent nearly 25 years with the club.

However, the 64-year-old still has an indirect investment in the north London giants due to his 29.88 per cent share in ENIC, which owns 86.91 per cent of the club.

It is so far unclear precisely how much Tottenham paid Levy, with the figures set to be revealed in the 2025-26 accounts.

What Donna Cullen’s exit fee means for Daniel Levy

Tottenham posted their accounts for 2024-25 last month, showing Donna Cullen was paid £6.6million following her departure last summer.

Cullen, who was a close ally of Levy, spent 19 years on Spurs’ board alongside the former chairman prior to her exit.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed how much Levy could have been paid after leaving his day-to-day role at Tottenham.

“It depends on the circumstances by which he left with,” said Borson.

“He was another one with immediate effect. If someone leaves with immediate effect, it can sometimes mean that there’s been some fundamental reason for it from a conduct perspective, which can of course mean that there’s zero cost or litigation follows.

“The likelihood is it will be a few million pounds, but it’s not really the same as the situation with Donna Cullen, who was probably paid something akin to a sort of success bonus for her body of work over a number of years as a thank you.”

How much Levy could have been paid by Tottenham

Borson insisted Levy and Cullen’s situation can’t be compared due to his stake in Tottenham’s ownership group.

“It’s slightly different with Daniel Levy,” said Borson.

“Daniel Levy, contrary to what people think, was not a hired-gun CEO. He’s a very significant owner of the group, so I’m sure he enjoyed his salary, but it was only a small part of his net worth.

“I don’t think there’s the same logic in terms of removing him from office. Although, depending on what his contract said, they would have had to have paid him a very significant amount of money.

“Who knows what that contract looked like, but you would think it would be at least a year’s salary, so I’m sure it would be a few million pounds.”

Levy was paid £5.8m in his final season at Tottenham after they claimed the Europa League trophy under former manager Ange Postecoglou.

Coventry City plot sensational James Maddison return with Tottenham exit on the cards – transfer expert

Coventry City are plotting a move to bring James Maddison back to the CBS Arena if he is allowed to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The 29-year-old has missed the entire season with a cruciate ligament injury, having recently returned to the bench for games against Brighton and Wolves.

Despite his involvement, though, the exact timeframe for his return to playing remains unclear and is not currently expected to happen before the end of the season.

However, former Coventry assistant manager Mick Brown told Football Insider that a return to the CBS Arena could be on the cards if he is ready to return for pre-season.

Maddison has made no secret of his support for the Sky Blues since leaving the club in 2016, but could now make a return as Tottenham prepare for major exits.

Could James Maddison return to Coventry City?

Football Insider revealed on 20 April that Coventry are planning a big transfer window as they aim to back Frank Lampard ahead of their return to the Premier League.

There is a belief that the squad will need major upgrades if they are to replicate the success of Sunderland and Leeds United and avoid relegation.

Re-signing Maddison would be a significant statement of intent for the Sky Blues if he is allowed to leave Spurs ahead of what is set to be a busy transfer window.

“James Maddison to Coventry City has got legs,” Brown told Football Insider.

“He’s made no secret about the fact he’s a fan of the club, he came through the ranks there, so it’s a deal that could pull at his heart strings.

“First thing’s first, he has to get his fitness back and that will be his priority.

“Once he does that, then a decision can be made about his future. If Tottenham go down, he might not be interested in playing in the Championship.

“Coventry could take that opportunity to bring him back to the Premier League, I think they’re more likely to take that gamble than anybody else would be.

“It’s going to be a concern for a few clubs, he has to prove his fitness and that he can stay playing at the top level, because it can take a while to recover.

“But Coventry would be able to give him the time and be patient with him, and it’s an environment where he would feel comfortable.

“So, like I say, he will have to prove he can get over the knee problem but if he can be ready for pre-season, a move to Coventry would make a lot of sense.”

Are other clubs interested in signing Maddison?

Maddison is among a number of Tottenham players being linked with a move ahead of the summer window, but the focus is currently set on his recovery.

Last month, the attacking midfielder posted an update via his social media in which he detailed the recovery process, including some footage of on-pitch work.

Ahead of that update, Brown told Football Insider that Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Maddison and could make a move if he is on course to recover.

Similar to Coventry’s plans, Villa could explore a move if he becomes available, but will need him to prove his fitness before they made a firm decision over a deal.

There is also a chance the midfielder will decide to stay at Tottenham to continue his recovery and comeback regardless of whether they are relegated.

Randal Kolo Muani: Liverpool explore ‘surprise’ deal for cut-price Tottenham star

Randal Kolo Muani: Liverpool explore ‘surprise’ deal for cut-price Tottenham star - Football Insider
Description

Randal Kolo Muani is a surprise striker on Liverpool‘s radar as they plan to sign a replacement for Hugo Ekitike following his serious injury.

Kolo Muani has struggled to make an impact on loan at Tottenham this season and is not set to stay in North London beyond the summer.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a shock switch to Liverpool ahead of next term as PSG plan to let him leave on a permanent deal.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Kolo Muani is on the Reds’ radar as they seek to sign cover for the injured Ekitike.

It remains to be seen if he will be part of Liverpool’s transfer plans, but a new striker is set to be signed regardless this summer, with Ekitike likely sidelined until next year.

Liverpool admire Randal Kolo Muani but a move is unlikely

Kolo Muani has scored five goals in 36 appearances for Spurs across all competitions while failing to nail down a consistent starting place in attack under three different managers.

He is known to be on Liverpool’s list of potential striker additions due to the likely lower fee involved, but is not a top target and seems set to return to PSG and stay overseas rather than remain in the Premier League.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It’s a surprise link. I don’t think many people expected this one.

“Muani has had a difficult season at Tottenham and obviously it doesn’t look like that move will be made permanent from Paris Saint-Germain.

“Liverpool might be forced into the market to bring in cover for Ekitike with his long-term injury. We’re not sure when he will be back…it’s looking more and more likely that it will be 2027.

“They might be looking at cheaper options to see who they can bring in to strengthen their attacking options. I would be surprised if they did pursue a move for Kolo Muani.”

Curtis Jones considering Liverpool exit after lack of playing time

Liverpool could be set for an exodus of first-team stars this summer after a disappointing follow-up campaign to their title win.

Sources have exclusively told Football Insider that Jones is unhappy at Liverpool due to the lack of game time afforded to him so far this season.

He has only started 13 Premier League games in 2025-26, and could be tempted to leave his boyhood club if more midfield signings are made in the summer.

Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa are both also likely to leave the club in the coming months after each enduring tough seasons.
