The next challenge for club chiefs will be to find an agreement with Newcastle, with GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs suggesting that the Tyneside outfit will demand a total fee worth up to £100m for their midfield maestro.

Tonali Deal Would Send Statement Out to Premier League

Tottenham were a laughing stock for rival clubs' fans last season, but there is no doubt that the addition of Tonali would send out a real statement to them and Spurs' rivals ahead of next season.

Tonali has established himself as one of the best in his position in the Premier League since making the move to St James' Park, and he should be in the prime years of his career at 26 years of age.

The Italy international has shown that he can be an all-round midfielder, offering physicality, energy, quality on the ball, and a goal threat.

What would be interesting to see is if Tottenham do end up landing Palhinha and Tonali, who ends up leaving.

De Zerbi currently has Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Conor Gallagher, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall to choose from in midfield, and at least one of those would surely be on their way if Palhinha and Tonali both join.

Sarr has been linked with an exit, while you wonder if one of Gray and Bergvall could be sent out on loan if their minutes are going to be limited, like they were in the closing stages of last season.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan revealed a private text message from Levy that suggested that the north Londoners have had their 'pants pulled down' by the Seagulls over the deal.

While it was clear that De Zerbi really wanted to link up with his former player again, you would have to say that a fee in excess of £50m is a lot for a player with 12 months remaining on his contract.

Tottenham will be hoping that the 26-year-old hits the ground running at the club, and you would expect for that fee that he will be a regular starter alongside Dutch compatriot Micky van de Ven, with Marcos Senesi playing back-up.

What you can also say is that given Spurs have signed Senesi and Robertson on free transfers, the fee for Van Hecke looks better when you consider they have transformed their defence for just over £50m.

But Spurs entered the race to sign the 26-year-old, with Roberto De Zerbi driving the move to sign the midfielder, as he looks to bolster an ailing Tottenham squad that has finished in 17th place in the Premier League in back-to-back seasons.

GIVEMESPORT understands that Tottenham are willing to pay between £80million and £85million to seal the deal, with potentially more in add-ons too and Tonali is reportedly keen on the move.

Tottenham want to make a statement signing for De Zerbi and prove they are willing to invest in the squad for the new head coach to turn around the club's fortunes and bringing in Tonali would certainly be that. For starters, Tonali would be a club-record signing, beating the £65million spent on Dominic Solanke two seasons ago.

And it may well be that Spurs have already got the green light to secure a deal for Tonali, described by Football Italia as the "best midfielder in the country", this summer.

As already mentioned, there are a number of other clubs who have been lin ked with a move for the Italian, but will they actually follow through with that interest?

Other clubs drop out of the race to sign Tonali

Manchester City's top priority is Elliot Anderson, with the Citizens already having two bids of more than £100million rejected by Nottingham Forest. Will they really get up towards the three-figure mark for another central midfielder in this summer transfer window?

Manchester United have already dropped out of the race to sign Tonali, deeming the package for him too expensive to follow through with, as they turn their attention to other targets.

Meanwhile Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal with Frenchman Manu Kone. If they complete that deal for a fee in the region of £40million, it would, like City, also be unlikely to see the Gunners splash out more money on another central midfielder.

Tonali's preference, should he leave St James' Park this summer, would be on a return to Italy to play in Serie A again, but GMS understands that the finances required to sign him would be out of the reach of the teams who have shown an interest in him.

De Zerbi wants a new central midfielder and Joao Palhinha had been linked with a return on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell last season, but Tonali would represent a significant upgrade on the Portuguese and is four years his junior too.

The Spurs hierarchy want to make a statement signing and the door is clearly open for the Lilywhites to get a deal done.

Tel has already been linked with Bournemouth and clubs across Europe but now looks to be staying put.

The French forward was an important player for De Zerbi in the final weeks of last season, registering an assist in the 2-1 win at Aston Villa before scoring in the 1-1 draw against Leeds United the following week.

His fortunes at Spurs have been mixed since his arrival from Bayern Munich, initially on loan before a permanent switch last summer, but has clearly shown De Zerbi enough to think he is worth having around.

Spurs need Mathys Tel

One of the biggest talking points regarding Tottenham's woeful season last term was the number of serious injuries that kept big-name players unavailable for extended periods.

Both Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert aren't expected to be back fit until 2027 with respective anterior cruciate ligament injuries, meaning that there is still a gap in the forward line that needs to be filled.

Spurs may still complete a deal for Savinho, but that shouldn't dictate whether or not Tel has a future at the club. At 21, the Frenchman is still in the early stages of his career and has shown plenty of potential.

With a deal running until 2031, Tottenham could set a significant price tag for the forward but cashing in after just one year would be bad business.

Tottenham have turned down a second offer for Luka Vuskovic this summer, as David Ornstein reports that a fresh bid wasn't enough to convince Spurs to part ways with the star defender.

Tottenham face a real challenge in trying to keep Vuskovic, considering his ability at such a young age.

The defender was described as "exceptional" during his spell at Hamburg last season, capable of organising a defence and leading the team throughout the campaign.

With the arrival of Senesi and Van Hecke at the back, it looks tough to see where Vuskovic will get consistent game time. Exits for Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin may help, but there will still be Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso ahead of him in the pecking order.

If Tottenham can suggest a pathway that will see him get some game time in the future, then they may be able to seal a loan move or two to give him the right experience.

Twenty-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has already joined from Reims for £18.5million, and Newcastle also want to add James Trafford from Manchester City.

Advanced talks are also ongoing with Osasuna for Victor Munoz. Newcastle are confident on agreeing a package for a player who would effectively replace Gordon.

Newcastle's transfer plans analysed

And Newcastle are expected to add a full-back, which will become even more of a priority if Lewis Hall or Tino Livramento depart. The former is on Manchester United's radar, while Livramento, who sadly picked up a calf injury and will miss the World Cup, is appreciated by Manchester City and Arsenal.

Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys and Toulouse’s Dayann Methalie were both explored in January, while Fulham's Antonee Robinson is another name discussed.

And should Tonali leave, another midfielder will be added. Monaco's Lamine Camara is one of the leading targets. Newcastle could also enter the race for Alex Scott, but face heavy competition from other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester United and Liverpool. Bournemouth are still hoping Scott signs a new deal with talks to move forward in the coming weeks.

According to The Athletic's deal sheet, Tottenham have been "in contact" with the representatives of Eintracht Frankfurt winger Jean-Matteo Bahoya who they have identified as a possible alternative to Savinho.

The 21-year-old produced four goals and four assists in 37 appearances last season for the German side and has a total of seven goals and eight assists in 78 games since joining from French second division side Angers in January 2024.

Described as 'unbelievably fast', Bahoya is known for his dribbling and pace, setting a Bundesliga record for the fastest speed ever recorded in a match when clocking 23.09mph in a match against Bochum in March 2025.

It is believed that the Bundesliga side value the France Under-21s winger at around £60m, with his deal at Frankfurt running until 2029.

Spurs need more exciting forwards

With Xavi Simons expected to be sidelined for a significant period after suffering a ruptured ACL injury towards the end of last season, as well as Mohamed Kudus still being on the treatment table, Tottenham are very clearly short of flair players in attack.

Over half of their Premier League rivals scored more goals than their 48, with nearly a quarter netted by Richarlison alone.

De Zerbi needs reinforcements all over the pitch, but reestablishing an identity in the final third is certainly a priority as supporters look to get excited by their team once again.
