Every game from here on in is must-win for Tottenham Hotspur. Such is the perilous position they find themselves in.

For the first time in 17 years Spurs are in the relegation zone in the Premier League in a league table outside of the first three games of the season.

The threat of a first relegation since 1977 is very real.

Roberto De Zerbi was brought in early to save the club from relegation, after a disastrous caretaker spell in charge by Igor Tudor. But the Italian's first game in charge did not go to plan, with Tottenham losing 1-0 to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Spurs Can Move Out Of The Relegation Zone

Next up is De Zerbi's first home game in charge, with the club calling for all supporters to turn up in white on Saturday as they take on De Zerbi's former club Brighton & Hove Albion.

Spurs can climb out of the drop zone, because West Ham do not play until Monday night, but that will require them to do something they have not done in 111 days - win a game of Premier League football.

De Zerbi made some interesting choices in his first starting XI against the Black Cats and it is crucial that he makes the right decisions when it comes to the starting lineup this time around.

First of all we know who is going to play in goal. De Zerbi confirmed Guglielmo Vicario is not ready to return after his hernia surgery, so Antonin Kinsky will be between the sticks.

Ahead of him there's not Cristian Romero, so you'd expect Kevin Danso to fill in alongside Micky van de Ven. the two full-backs did ok against Sunderland, so he should go with Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie again.

Ahead of them is where it gets interesting.

Archie Gray has been the standout Spurs performer in a diabolical season, so he starts in the two in midfield - Spurs just need to use his this week after he only touched the ball 23 times last week.

Alongside him I think Yves Bissouma should play. None of the others fill me with much confidence and as much as I want to see Lucas Bergvall in there, I think the experiment with him in the No.10 role last week may see De Zerbi leave him out completely this week.

Bissouma can be guilty of giving the ball away, but he does take more risks in possession and De Zerbi wants, and will need, that.

The Forward Line Has To Change

In the three behind the striker there are two nailed on starters. Xavi Simons and Mathys Tel just have to be in the lineup.

Simons has been criminally underused it's incredible, given what he can offer the team, and Tel showed once again, in a more limited amount of time, the urgency and forward drive that this Spurs team needs.

On the right I'm predicting a rogue choice - Djed Spence to be pushed further forward as he has been once or twice due to injuries this season. With him and Porro there are two options for both going forward and defensive duties.

It could be a toss of a coin up front, but Dominic Solanke is likely to get the nod ahead of Richarlison, who could be a threat from the bench.

Manchester United have already made enquiries over a summer deal for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, following claims of a shock clause in his contract, according to SportsBoom.

Man United's focus on the pitch remains ensuring they do qualify for the Champions League next season, following their wobble against Leeds United at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Michael Carrick's side currently lie seven points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, and they can extend that advantage to 10 points on Saturday when they face the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

They will have to do it with just one fit senior centre-back however, after Leny Yoro picked up a new injury that could rule him out for the rest of the season.

According to SportsBoom, Romero is widely expected to walk away from Tottenham this summer, regardless of which division they find themselves in next season.

If that is the case, then the Spurs captain has already played his last game for the club, having been ruled out for the rest of the season following the knee injury he suffered against Sunderland in Roberto De Zerbi's first match in charge of the club.

The report says that United have already made 'early enquiries' over a potential summer deal for the 27-year-old, believing that he is ready-made for them given his experience and the fact he is in his prime.

United won't have things all their own way if they do firm up their initial interest though, with Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Crystal Palace having also made tentative checks on the player's situation, as well as interest from European clubs.

Romero Claimed to Have Shock Contract Clause

The report also claims that should Tottenham drop into the Championship, there is a clause in Romero's contract that would allow him to leave the club for free.

It seems extremely unlikely Spurs would have included anything like this in his contract when they signed him, with his current deal due to expire in 2029.

If there is any truth to it though, then United are likely to face stiff competition should Tottenham drop into the Championship, with the player having no interest in playing in England's second tier.

That is a genuine possibility right now, with Spurs two points from safety with six Premier League matches left to play, and given they are without a top-flight win in 2026.

One big concern over potentially signing Romero is his disciplinary record, given he has been sent off six times in all competitions for signing for Tottenham in 2021.

Winless in their last 13 Premier League games, Tottenham have severely lacked creativity all season, with both James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski long-term absentees.

In the defeat to Sunderland, De Zerbi opted for Lucas Bergvall at No. 10, and the Sweden international largely struggled to impress in only his second league appearance since returning from injury.

Xavi Simons, meanwhile, was left on the bench and was brought on with five minutes of normal time remaining, when Spurs were searching for a late equaliser.

It marked a fourth Premier League game in a row in which Simons, who joined from RB Leipzig in a £50m deal last summer, was absent from the starting XI.

So far, it has been a difficult campaign for the Dutchman after he struggled to gain the trust of both Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor, but he has shown enough quality in recent weeks to deserve a start against Brighton.

The 22-year-old produced a man-of-the-match display against Atletico Madrid, scoring twice, and is one of the few creative options available as Spurs look to avoid a nightmare end to the campaign.

At his Friday press conference, De Zerbi confirmed Tottenham will be without captain Cristian Romero for the rest of the campaign after the defender suffered a partial MCL tear.

Romero has joined a lengthy list of absentees that includes Kulusevski, Maddison, Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus, Ben Davies and Guglielmo Vicario.

There has been some positive news regarding Rodrigo Bentancur, who is available again following a hamstring setback.

“Sarr’s value is growing and there’s a real possibility of him moving on this summer whether they go down or not. Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern Munich are all big fans of the player, and offers of around £50m would probably be enough."

Being on the verge of relegation will enforce changes within the squad, and after bringing Roberto De Zerbi in for the summer, Spurs now must shape the squad in his image if they want to improve.

Sarr's energy and physicality, along with his technical quality, would see him slot perfectly into De Zerbi's system, but with so many changes likely, a big offer could make him become surplus to requirements.

With such big clubs showing an interest too, it's likely that he will want the opportunity to test himself at the highest level, and it seems that Spurs may be about to lose yet another important figure in the summer.

The north London side are in the midst of a relegation battle to stay in the Premier League, with the club currently two points adrift of safety with six games remaining in the campaign, six points behind Leeds.

Darlow, who has been described as 'outstanding', started the season as the number two goalkeeper at Elland Road, despite helping the team earn promotion up from the Championship last year. However, the 35-year-old has reclaimed his starting spot in recent months after Lucas Perri disappointed Daniel Farke with his early-season performances, and he hasn't looked back since, starting 16 Premier League games.

But the veteran goalkeeper is out of contract at the end of the season and there have been no signs of a renewal being on the cards, despite his strong performances. Kinsky could leave on loan to play more regularly elsewhere, while Vicario has been linked with a move to Inter Milan.

Darlow Could Be Shrewd Signing

With Kinsky and Vicario looking more likely to leave Tottenham than stay this summer, regardless of what division they are playing in, a move for an experienced shot-stopper who has played in both leagues and is playing regularly could be perfect. It's unlikely that Darlow would be brought in to be the first-choice goalkeeper, but having him in the squad would give the manager the option to use him if needed without having to worry, considering how he has performed this season. On a free transfer too, it would be shrewd business by Spurs, who will have plenty of holes to fill in their squad this summer, leaving them some spare cash to spend elsewhere.

Tottenham Hotspur sit in the third and final position currently, dropping into the bottom three for the first time barring the first three games of the season since 2009.

They are now chasing West Ham United in 17th, two points above them, Nottingham Forest in 16th, three points above them and Leeds United in 15th, six points above them.

Tottenham Face Tough Test Against De Zerbi's Old Team

It is one team from four to go down with the Clarets and Wolves.

Leeds get the Premier League weekend started in terms of that quartet, playing Wolves at home at 3pm on Saturday. And Alan Shearer has backed the Whites to win and effectively move themselves away from danger.

Then Spurs are up, in Roberto De Zerbi's first home game in charge, against his former club Brighton & Hove Albion. But Shearer is not expecting Tottenham to turn their form around against the Seagulls.

Spurs have not won a game in 2026 and it will be 111 days by the time they face off against Fabian Hurzeler's side since they last tasted Premier League victory.

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer predicted: "Brighton have been in superb form, I think they're in ninth at the minute, and they've got a chance of getting into a European place.

"I don't have any belief in Spurs, either. I think what we saw last weekend at Sunderland, it wouldn't fill me with confidence that they can get something at home under huge pressure. I've got no belief in them so I'm going to say a Brighton away win."

Forest take on Burnley at the City Ground, with Shearer fully expecting the home side to pick up three points and then it's West Ham away at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Shearer said of that London derby: "I've got a sneaky feeling West Ham might go there and nick something. I don't think West Ham will be beaten. Depending on what team [Oliver] Glasner wants to put out, because obviously they have a European game, I'm going to say a West Ham away win which doesn't bode well for Tottenham.

"I've tipped all the other relegation battle teams to win other than Tottenham."

Those results would leave Tottenham five points adrift of safety with five games to play - staring down the barrel of a first ever relegation from the Premier League and a first demotion since 1977.

Tottenham Agreement 'Almost Done' With Marcos Senesi

Athletic journalist David Ornstein confirmed on Friday morning that Tottenham were in 'advanced talks' to sign the Bournemouth centre-back on a free transfer, with the 28-year-old's contract with the Cherries due to expire at the end of the season.

Now, Jacobs has corroborated Ornstein's claim, and added that Spurs are close to an 'agreement in principle' with the player over a move.

The Argentina international is open to making the move to north London to link up with De Zerbi, but as with the Robertson deal, it does depend on Tottenham avoiding relegation to the Championship.

Tottenham Deserve Praise

While it has been a horrendous season for Tottenham with many poor decisions made throughout, you can't fault the impressive work off the pitch when it comes to almost agreeing deals in April for Robertson and Senesi to join, subject to securing survival.

Spurs have missed experienced leaders within the group this season, and the duo would bring so much Premier League know-how to the group.

Of course, the added bonus is that neither would cost a transfer fee such is their contract situation, and they still have a lot to offer at this level.

As Jacobs says, bringing in an Argentina international like Senesi for nothing when you are at risk of losing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven would be smart.

Fabrizio Romano told GMS' Market Madness podcast this week that there is an expectancy from all parties that Romero could be leaving the club in the summer transfer window, no matter how the season ends.

Now De Zerbi just needs to keep the club in the Premier League to make the hard work off the pitch worth it.

But there was good news this week with Uruguayan Bentancur returning to first team training, having not played a match since the beginning of January, after picking up a hamstring injury in the game with Bournemouth.

But Bentancur will be back against the Seagulls, as will former Brighton player Yves Bissouma.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, De Zerbi said: "Bentancur is available. I don’t know if he will start. Bissouma is available 100 per cent, more than Sunderland game."

De Zerbi did also confirm, however, that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario was not yet ready to return to the first team. Antonin Kinsky played in De Zerbi's first game in charge, with Vicario having undergone hernia surgery, and the Czech keeper will once again be in between the sticks, after De Zerbi confirmed: "Vicario, no."

Bentancur was not the only long-term injured player to be spotted in training this week, with James Maddison, who has not played all season after suffering an ACL injury in pre-season, also joining in with the first team.

The Englishman is not yet ready to step out onto the pitch, but De Zerbi spoke about him during his press conference too.

"There are a lot of different types of leaders," De Zerbi said. "Real leader who talks inside the dressing room, Maddison is a top player on the pitch with the ball but also as a personality, mentality on the pitch.

"I will use the players when they are totally available to play and start the training, it's better to lose one game more than get another injury."

Tottenham go into this weekend's game with Brighton in the Premier League relegation zone, two points adrift of West Ham United, who leapfrogged them with victory over Wolves during the last round of matches.

While Bentancur and Bissouma's return is welcome relief for De Zerbi, SPurs will still be without seven players for the game against their new head coach's former team.

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones ahead of the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

The north London side are keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old midfielder’s situation, as he could be allowed to leave amid his limited involvement under Arne Slot.

Jones has made just 12 Premier League starts this season, as well as another four in the Champions League, where Liverpool were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain.

The Liverpool-born midfielder will enter the final year of his contract in June, meaning the upcoming window could be one of the Reds’ last opportunities to sell for a substantial fee.

According to the Daily Mail, Jones’ desire for regular minutes leaves the door open for a potential Anfield exit this summer.

Serie A leaders Inter Milan looked at signing the 25-year-old in January and have not been ruled out of resuming their interest, provided their valuation matches Liverpool’s.

Tottenham also retain an interest in the ‘incredible’ midfielder, as they could look to bring him in alongside fellow Liverpool teammate Andy Robertson.

Provided they retain their Premier League status, Tottenham are seen as frontrunners to sign Robertson at the end of his contract in June.

The Scottish international has confirmed he will depart Anfield following a nine-year spell on Merseyside and is believed to have earmarked Tottenham as his preferred destination.

A deal hinges on whether Tottenham will be able to avoid relegation, with the club sitting 18th in the standings, two points off safety, with six games remaining.

If Spurs end up relegated, a drop to the Championship would likely spark a first-team exodus, with a host of stars expected to leave.

That could potentially include midfielder Archie Gray, whom Liverpool have placed on their radar ahead of the summer.

The 20-year-old is being closely watched by Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich as well, given his strong individual displays for Spurs this season.

Gray joined Spurs from Leeds United in the summer of 2024 and has made 79 appearances for the club to date, registering five goal involvements.
