Description

A former Tottenham Hotspur academy goalkeeper endured a moment he will struggle to forget this weekend, with an extraordinary error quickly going viral.

Not every player who comes through the Tottenham Hotspur academy makes it into the senior squad, although plans are in place for more academy stars to break into the first team.

Several rise through the youth ranks and head out on loan before eventually being sold without ever pulling on the Lilywhite shirt in a competitive first-team fixture.

Others break through and become global stars after progressing through the academy system, with Harry Kane a prime example.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi scores a bizarre own goal

Josh Oluwayemi falls into the former category, having progressed through the Tottenham academy ranks without making a first-team appearance for Tottenham.

He now plays in New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix, where he has been a mainstay in goal for the A-League side.

Unfortunately, the clash against Auckland was one to forget for the 24-year-old, who produced what many are already calling an own goal of the year contender.

MORE SPURS STORIES

In the 24th minute, a long clearance from Auckland defender Jake Girdwood-Reich sailed over the Wellington back line and dropped towards Oluwayemi, who had advanced well outside his penalty area.

With no immediate pressure on him, the former Spurs goalkeeper attempted to head the ball away but misjudged it completely, sending it looping back over his head and into his own net from outside the box.

The match eventually ended 5-0, with Auckland City comfortably seeing off Wellington in the New Zealand derby. Oluwayemi’s side now sits 11th in the division and is on course to miss out on the qualification places.

Following the defeat, Giancarlo Italiano resigned from his position as Wellington Phoenix manager, leaving the club without a head coach at a crucial stage of the season.

Former Tottenham youngster Oluwayemi will no doubt be gutted by his mistake and eager to respond when his side next face third-placed Sydney FC on March 1.

Mason Melia update: Tottenham striker finally set to join first-team training - Spurs Web
Description

There has now been an update on forward Mason Melia, who arrived through the door at Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window.

Spurs signed Mason Melia from St Patrick’s Athletic for £1.6m plus add-ons back in February of last year, with the youngster seen as one of the best young talents to emerge from Irish football over recent years.

The forward had to wait until he turned 18 to arrive at Tottenham Hotspur due to the post-Brexit rules, eventually making the move to London in last month’s transfer window.

The striker arrived at the club in red-hot form, having finished the 2025 season with 13 goals and four assists from 35 league matches for St Pat’s.

Mason Melia set to start training with Tottenham

Melia has not been spotted training at Hotspur Way since his arrival, as the teenager was dealing with an injury.

BBC Sport have now revealed that the forward is expected to return to training next week for the first time since his switch to North London.

The report reveals that Melia has been dealing with a back issue, which the Tottenham medical staff first wanted to address before they introduced him to training.

MORE SPURS STORIES

With the Irish youngster’s injury problems behind him, he is now set to take the pitch at Hotspur Way for the first time over the coming days.

Will Melia be involved with the senior Spurs side?

BBC Sport say that the centre-forward is expected to begin with Spurs Under‑21s from next week.

However, the report says that he will be allowed to train with the first team if he impresses and proves his fitness.

Tottenham Hotspur name-dropped in Swedish parliament, but not for a good reason

Tottenham Hotspur name-dropped in Swedish parliament, but not for a good reason - Spurs Web
Description

A Swedish politician has bizarrely referred to Tottenham Hotspur while speaking in parliament, and it was far from flattering.

Spurs have been the butt of jokes from opposition fans for a long time, due to their reputation of ‘bottling’ big moments and not being able to cross the line.

Tottenham fans would have been hoping that would change when they beat Manchester United in Bilbao last year to lift the Europa League.

However, the Lilywhites have struggled domestically again this term and now appear to be involved in a relegation battle, and their troubles have not gone unnoticed in Sweden.

Swedish political aims ‘Spursy’ barb while referring to Tottenham

Swedish politician Mikael Damberg has decided to take a dig at the North London club while analysing his nation’s economic struggles in the club’s parliament.

He likened the Scandinavian nation’s economic performance to Tottenham’s, suggesting that they struggle to bring things together despite having a lot of resources at their disposal.

Damberg said (via Football.London): “I naturally think of Tottenham Hotspur, also known as Spurs, it is one of England’s most distinguished and rich clubs with an enormous stadium, dedicated and large supporter base – everything to be considered a ‘top team’.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“Despite this, Tottenham find themselves in crisis. They are fighting at the bottom of the table, just a few points above the relegation zone. Not because they lack resources or benefits, but because they have squandered opportunities.

“Due to making wrong decisions, general jerkiness and thinking in the short-term, they have lost their direction and stability. The club have been given the name ‘Spursy’, [which is] when you have opportunities but get no results. Madame Speaker, that is precisely how the Minister of Finance is handling the Swedish economy.

“Sweden has the power, ability and resources. We have the companies, workforce and innovation capabilities. Conditions exits for the Swedish economy to prosper. The government risks making Sweden ‘Spursy’. That won’t do. Sweden cannot perform like Tottenham.”

Tottenham do not look likely to shake off the ‘Spursy’ tag anytime soon

Tottenham are not going to overcome the accusation of mental fragility levelled against them unless they have a sustained spell of success.

Being involved in a relegation battle while being one of the richest clubs in the country is certainly not going to help their cause.

Tottenham fans will hope that their current blip is temporary and that the club will soon find a formula to be back challenging consistently at the top end of the table.

Lucas Bergvall price tag: Tottenham demanded £57m after breakthrough season - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have made their stance clear on Lucas Bergvall’s future as clubs from across the Premier League circle over the youngster.

Spurs are struggling in the Premier League for a second season in a row, and naturally, such sustained struggles may potentially tempt the club’s best players to seek moves elsewhere.

That may happen with Bergvall, who has reportedly been the subject of enquiries from both Chelsea and Aston Villa.

A couple of days ago, it was reported that Liverpool have also joined the race for the 20-year-old Spurs man ahead of the summer.

Tottenham have no plans to sell Lucas Bergvall

Fotboll Direkt point out that despite the growing interest in the midfielder’s services, the Lilywhites’ answer has been clear to the player’s potential suitors.

Spurs have made it known to clubs that the Sweden international is not for sale, even for ‘huge money’.

The report explains that Tottenham had set a price tag of SEK 700m (£57.3m) for Bergvall last summer after his breakthrough season.

MORE SPURS STORIES

While no bids have been made for the youngster, some clubs are willing to pay that kind of fee this year. However, that is no longer deemed enough by the North London club for the former Djurgarden man, who looks set to stay at the club.

Bergvall may make Spurs return sooner than expected

The attacking midfielder has been out of action for the last month since picking up an injury in Tottenham’s Champions League win over Borussia Dortmund.

While it was initially reported that Bergvall could face three months on the sidelines, it has emerged over recent days that the Spurs man’s recovery is going better than expected.

Thomas Frank was always doomed to fail at Tottenham, says Jamie Carragher

Thomas Frank was always doomed to fail at Tottenham, says Jamie Carragher - Spurs Web
Description

Jamie Carragher has explained why Thomas Frank was always fighting a losing battle since the day he walked into Tottenham Hotspur.

When Spurs finally made the decision to sack Frank this month, it certainly did not come as a surprise to the footballing world.

In fact, the feeling among most Tottenham fans was that Frank should have been sacked a lot earlier and that the club dragged their feet for too long amidst the team’s continued struggles.

The decision to get rid of the former Brentford boss was very expensive for Spurs, but one pundit has now suggested that the experiment was never likely to succeed in the first place.

Jamie Carragher claims Thomas Frank was always the wrong fit for Tottenham

Carragher pointed out that pragmatic coaches, who cut their teeth at midtable or smaller sides, have rarely ever been able to make the transition to top clubs.

He suggested that Thomas Frank’s style of play was never likely to be accepted by the Spurs faithful and that the former Brentford boss was always swimming against the tide in North London.

The former Liverpool defender wrote for The Telegraph: “Frank proved the wrong fit because he is the latest example of one of England’s biggest clubs mistakenly believing experience at a mid-table or bottom-half Premier League team is the ideal first step and breeding ground to make the leap up. Pragmatic coaches do not mix with aspirational clubs demanding front-footed attacking football.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“Every recent example demonstrates it ends quickly and amid a toxic atmosphere. As Frank continued to fight a losing battle, I was increasingly reminded of Roy Hodgson’s short tenure at Liverpool, Nuno Espírito Santo’s brief spell at Spurs, David Moyes’s time at Manchester United and Sam Allardyce’s appointment at Newcastle United.

“The fans make up their minds early because they have so many historical reference points for the kind of football they want to see, and the manager they wish to hear representing them in every press conference.”

Carragher expects Frank to succeed again in the Premier League

Reports indicate that Frank is already on the wishlist of multiple Premier League clubs ahead of the summer.

Carragher is confident that the Dane will do ‘great work’ again in the English top-flight, but he believes that it will be at a club of Brentford’s stature rather than Tottenham’s.

The pundit added: “Frank is an extremely likeable and talented coach. I have absolutely no doubt he will be working again soon, and many clubs will seek to hire him to replicate the great work he did at Brentford. But that last sentence is the key.

“Repeating what worked for Frank at Brentford, or Allardyce at Bolton Wanderers, and Hodgson while Fulham’s manager, would be hailed as a wonderful achievement at 80 clubs in England. Those with a more illustrious history, who expect to be challenging for Premier League titles and the Champions League, will not tolerate a tactical plan which tips the balance more towards defensive structure over attacking flair.

“There is a vast cultural difference in leading a team where supporters have a reasonable expectation of going full throttle to win in every match, and one where there is a more realistic view that staying in the Premier League is a success, and anything higher than mid-table is one of the best seasons in a club’s history.”

Micky Van de Ven opens up on his relationship with ‘top’ Thomas Frank at Tottenham - Spurs Web
Description

Micky van de Ven has broken his silence on Thomas Frank’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur, offering an honest assessment of how the dressing room took the news.

Thomas Frank’s sacking marked the first managerial change since Daniel Levy’s departure and the 16th dismissal in the last 25 years.

Results were far from ideal, with Frank managing just two wins in his last 17 outings, while Tottenham hovered dangerously close to the relegation zone in 16th place.

Change was needed, with supporters losing patience with the football on display, and Frank was dismissed with Igor Tudor appointed as interim manager.

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven reacts to Thomas Frank exit

For several players, watching a manager leave is not an entirely new experience, with Ange Postecoglou also sacked following a disappointing domestic campaign last season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Micky van de Ven admitted it was difficult to see Frank go after working closely with him. He said: “It is always tough when a manager goes away.

“You have worked with him intensively the last, what was it, six months I think roughly. So yes, it is always tough when someone leaves and you are never happy to hear when someone needs to leave where you have been working with every day.”

MORE SPURS STORIES

Van de Ven also addressed his personal relationship with Frank, explaining how they communicated regularly both on and off the pitch.

He said: “It was good. I communicated a lot with Thomas, on and off the pitch, in both ways. So yes, I had a good connection with him and I spoke a lot with him about things on the pitch.”

Spurs dressing room unity under Thomas Frank

During the Dane’s tenure, there were claims that parts of the Tottenham dressing room were not best pleased with Frank, and now van de Ven has shed more light on that.

When asked whether there was a strong sense of togetherness during the former Brentford manager’s tenure, Van de Ven was clear in his praise of Frank.

He added: “Yes, for sure. What you say, his personality is top, like how kind he is to every person here in the building and every person in the dressing room, and how he communicates with everyone in the group, yes exactly what you say, his personality is top.”

Thomas Frank tipped for Premier League return after Tottenham sacking: Three clubs linked - Spurs Web
Description

Sam Allardyce has made a prediction about Thomas Frank after he fell victim to big club pressure at Tottenham Hotspur.

The marriage between Frank and Tottenham was not a happy one, with the Dane losing his job after just eight months in charge in North London, on the back of being at Brentford for more than eight years.

His style of play never really resonated with the Spurs fans, and some of Frank’s public statements also did not go down well with the club’s fan base.

The supporters were relieved when Tottenham finally made a managerial change last week, with many feeling that the Dane should have been sacked a long time ago.

Sam Allardyce claims Thomas Frank experienced ‘different’ pressure at Tottenham

Allardyce believes that the 52-year-old would have experienced the kind of pressure at Tottenham which was very different to his previous jobs.

Even though his time in N17 went horribly wrong, the experienced English coach is confident that we have not seen the last of Frank in the Premier League.

Allardyce said on Sky Sports: “Thomas experienced what it’s like to manage a big club for the first time. It’s different. I’ve done it at Everton, Newcastle, West Ham. There’s a different type of mentality and pressure.

MORE SPURS STORIES

“I think he’s obviously proved he’s a brilliant coach. The experience he’s gained, if he gets another opportunity, he will be better for it once he’s analysed what he did and didn’t do. Thomas will reappear in the Premier League somewhere. He’ll certainly not have to wait to get a job.”

Frank is already in demand in the Premier League

According to reports, the former Brentford boss may not have to wait too long after his sacking at Tottenham to get another Premier League job.

It has been alleged that Frank is already on the radars of Crystal Palace, Fulham and Bournemouth, who are all fearful of losing their managers in the summer.

The Dane can perhaps take confidence from Nuno Espirito Santo’s career trajectory, with the Portuguese coach rebuilding his reputation at Nottingham Forest after being cast aside by Spurs.

Watch as James Wilson scores his first Tottenham goal after just 61-seconds - Spurs Web
Description

Tottenham fans may have been underwhelmed with the signing of James Wilson in January, but he’s just bagged a wonderful goal for the Under-21s that has us excited.

It’s safe to say the January transfer window was a failure for Spurs, generally speaking. After the signings of Conor Gallagher and Souza, many had hoped another couple of first-team arrivals would come before deadline day.

That didn’t happen, though, with Scottish youngster James Wilson the only new addition by the time the window closed.

The teenager is unlikely to show what he can do for the men’s squad this season, but at least he’s started to show glimpses of his massive potential in his latest outing with the youth team.

James Wilson scores first goal for Tottenham

Wilson made his Spurs debut 12 days ago, but it was a difficult game for the striker, who managed just one shot on goal despite the Lilywhites winning 4-0 against Birmingham.

He’s had a much better time of it against Norwich City’s Under-21 side, though. In fact, within 61 seconds Wilson had netted his first goal for Spurs.

In a move that spanned the entire right-hand side of the pitch and involved eight neat passes, it was Wilson who got on the end of it with a nice finish in the box.

MORE SPURS STORIES

It’s promising to see the team putting together such a slick, progressive attack, and credit must go to Wilson who was in the right place at the right time and kept his cool to complete the move.

Tottenham won 4-1 in the end, with Rio Kyerematen, Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny, and Ellis Lehane completing the rout.

Will James Wilson get a chance in the first-team at Spurs?

The plan is very much to keep Wilson in the youth team for the next few months before making an assessment on whether to sign him permanently or not in the summer.

However, with Solanke struggling with an illness and Richarlison only just returning to training, there is definitely a lack of fit forwards at the club.

It’s not like Igor Tudor is about to throw Wilson into the North London Derby, but with league games and Champions League duty to balance, there’s every chance there will be some minutes on offer for the younger players at the club from now until th end of the campaign.

When were Tottenham last relegated from the top-flight compared to Premier League rivals? - Spurs Web
Description

How long has it been since Tottenham Hotspur dropped out of the English top-flight as the club find themselves in the midst of a relegation battle?

Spurs are one of just six clubs to have never been relegated from the Premier League since the competition began in 1992, alongside Man United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton.

The Lilywhites find themselves just five points ahead of the drop zone with 12 league games left to play.

New interim head coach Igor Tudor is confident that Tottenham will stay up for sure, and Spurs fans will be hoping that the Croat’s confidence is not misplaced.

How long have Tottenham been in the English top flight?

The Athletic have revealed that Spurs have been in the top division of English football since the 1978-79 season, which is the fifth-longest run without going down.

That means the Lilywhites have been in the top flight consistently for 48 campaigns in a row. That is only bettered by Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Man United. It also encompasses a whopping 1,866 league games and 2,841 league goals.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Spurs last tasted relegation in the 1976/77 campaign. Should Tottenham go down this year, the club would endure its lowest point in nearly half a century; something that an entire generation of Spurs fans have never experienced.

How long Premier League teams have been in the top flight:

Jamie Carragher believes Spurs may be on the verge of a catastrophe

While Tudor is confident that relegation is not a possibility for his side, one pundit insists that Tottenham are certainly not too good to go down.

Jamie Carragher suggested that Spurs’ struggles at home make relegation a real possibility, claiming that there is little evidence to suggest that the Lilywhites can pick up wins in N17.

Relegation would have massive financial consequences at Tottenham, potentially putting the club in a major black hole.

Igor Tudor took the Tottenham Hotspur out squad to a meal for bonding time ahead of his first game in charge of the club.

Tudor’s Spurs reign starts with a big North London derby, and the Croat only has 13 fit first-team players at his disposal.

Tudor is confident that Tottenham have enough resources to get a result against Arsenal, as he cut a determined figure in his first press conference at Hotspur Way on Friday.

The 47-year-old is still getting to know his players after arriving on Monday, and he decided to meet them in a social setting to fast-forward the process.

Igor Tudor and his coaching staff socialise with the Tottenham squad

Tudor, his coaching staff and the entire Spurs squad were pictured having a meal at a restaurant as they gear up for the crunch clash on Sunday.

The Sun reveal that they went to Greek-Cypriot restaurant Ousia in Muswell Hill, which is only five miles away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The group were in casual clothes, and there were plenty of smiles around the table, with many having bottles of Coke and water. Thankfully, there was no lasagne on show.

Tudor is confident Spurs will stay up this season

The former Juventus boss is understandably looking to raise the spirits of the squad, whose confidence has been shot over recent months, with the players not appearing to enjoy their football under Thomas Frank.

Tudor has said he is 100 per cent confident Tottenham will stay up this season, even though they find themselves just five points off the drop zone.

Spurs fans will be hoping that the reset at the club will translate into better performances on the pitch over the coming weeks and months.
