Here are our Tottenham player ratings after they beat Atletico Madrid on the night but lost on aggregate in their Champions League clash

Tottenham can put away their passports for at least 18 months after they beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 on Wednesday evening but went down 7-5 on aggregate in their Champions League last 16 second leg match and here are our Spurs player ratings.

Spurs came into the game with a 5-2 scoreline from the first leg in Madrid eight days previously, but had since put in a battling display to grab a draw at Anfield against Liverpool. Tudor had to deal with 11 missing players including the suspended Richarlison and injured Dominic Solanke.

However, captain Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven returned to the team among four changes, with Destiny Udogie, Lucas Bergvall and Conor Gallagher back on the bench.

Spurs took the game to the visitors and opened the scoring on the half hour. The bright Mathys Tel picked out his compatriot Randal Kolo Muani with a curling cross from the right and the striker headed into the bottom left corner of the net.

Atletico then found the net two minutes into the second half. Xavi Simons was knocked over as he went to shoot at one end and Atletico broke up the pitch and Julian Alvarez rocketed an effort into the top left corner.

Just five minutes later though and Spurs struck again. Great work from Archie Gray saw him win the ball back, play a one-two with Pape Matar Sarr, and then he knock it inside for the Dutchman to curl home a low effort.

Atletico found another though when David Hancko got in front of Sarr to nod home a header from a corner.

Spurs got a late penalty when Xavi was felled in the box and he clipped in the penalty off the inside of the left-hand post but the hosts were left to rue a couple of missed chances in either half that could have ended things differently.

They went off to a standing ovation from the crowd for another promising display under Igor Tudor.

Here are our Spurs player ratings:

Guglielmo Vicario

Made a terrific first half reaction save to push away Simeone's shot as it deflected off Romero. Couldn't do much about Alvarez's powerful effort from inside the box. Made a couple of impressive second half saves to keep Spurs in the contest. 8

Radu Dragusin

Started the game as a right-back and he put in a good battling shift. Sent a header at the keeper from a corner before coming off. 6

Cristian Romero

Made an important clearance in front of his own goal early in the game. Made another crucial interception in a similar position at the other end in the second half and a big block to deny Alvarez after Atletico's second goal. Hit some lovely diagonal balls on a night when Toby Alderweireld was back in the house. 8

Micky van de Ven

A busy night back in the team and the Dutchman did most of what was asked of him. 6

Djed Spence

A couple of mistakes, including being disposessed for a second half Atletico chance but defended well otherwise. Made a great sprint back and sliding tackle in added time to stop Baena going through to score. 7

Pedro Porro

Had a big chance saved by Musso around the hour mark and the keeper pawed away his dangerous cross moments later. Worked hard but will rue that saved opportunity. 6

Archie Gray

Looks so comfortable at this level and he was leading the charge from the midfield in the first half. His performance was typified by his interception and assist for Xavi's goal. One of his best performances in a Spurs shirt. Even Llorente came over to shake his hand before he left the pitch for the 20-year-old was excellent. 9

Pape Matar Sarr

Involved in Spurs' second goal but beaten by Hancko to the ball for Atletico's second. Covered plenty of ground but played second fiddle to Gray on this occasion. 6

Xavi Simons

Came up with some moments of real quality, not least his curling goal in the second half. Then won a late penalty and fired it home. 8

Randal Kolo Muani

Worked hard up front and deserved his headed goal into the bottom left corner. Had a late chance blocked. 7

Mathys Tel

Had a hat-trick of shots in the opening 23 minute, the final one requiring a near post save from Musso. Then found himself on the right and picked out Kolo Muani with a pinpoint cross. Had another big moment in the first half when he should have played it across goal to two waiting Spurs players but shot instead. Faded in the second half. 7

Subs

Destiny Udogie

Booked soon after coming on and wasn't able to bring too much to the attack but he will get sharper. 5

Lucas Bergvall

Came on for the final 15 minutes or so and brought some energy. 5

Conor Gallagher

Had a late claim for a penalty in added time. N/A

Callum Olusesi

His Champions League debut and he tried to make things happen. N/A

Kevin Danso

Here's every word the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back had to say about the reports of problems inside the club and his criticism of his own performances

Micky van de Ven has hit out at the suggestion that Tottenham players do not care about the prospect of relegation because they will just leave the club this summer.

Spurs got back on track with a battling draw at Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League after a run of six defeats in all competitions. They remain just one point above 18th-placed West Ham in the table though and supporters have criticised the players at points for not caring as much as they do.

Some media reports have fed into that narrative with suggestions that some within the group care more than others about the plight of the north London club. Van de Ven, who was suspended from the trip to Anfield, hit out at the noise around Spurs and himself in particular and made his frustrations clear that the fanbase would then believe the stories.

Here's every word the Dutchman said at his press conference ahead of the Champions League last 16 second leg against Atletico Madrid on those problems, the red card of his career this month and plenty more.

There have been reports that some players have switched off and are thinking about next season. Have you heard that and how unfair do you think that is?

Yeah of course I've seen things passing by. It's not something I look at a lot to be honest. Reporters just say some things where you're like how do you even come up with this? Players are switched off or don't care about the situation that's happening right now?

The only thing I can say is it's not true. It would be strange if a player was in the dressing room now and saying I'm going to leave either way, or I don't focus about the situation because everything that's going to happen, it doesn't affect me. I think it's just nonsense. It's just like things they are bringing out.

People just start believing it. What I said - it's the biggest nonsense. Everybody is just focused on what's going ahead and what's in front of us.

It's been a difficult time for the team and yourself, how determined are you and how positive do you feel after the team got the point at Liverpool that Tottenham can get out of this situation?

Yeah, obviously I wasn’t there on the weekend, but I watched the game at home and I have seen some unbelievable mentality from the team. I think they showed big character and big mentality. It was a massive point over there and obviously we’re in a difficult situation right now. We all know we’re in a difficult situation, but what I saw from the guys at the weekend, it is unbelievable and the mentality is so strong. We just need to bring it tomorrow and then after tomorrow in the next game on Sunday.

How did you feel after being sent off against Crystal Palace?

I just apologised to the team. Obviously it was a game-changing moment. It was just a moment in the game where it’s just split-second decisions you make on the pitch and obviously it was not the best decision I made at that point. So devastated obviously when I needed to go in and saw the red card. At half-time I just apologised to the guys.

It's been such a strange season for you, In front of goal probably your best season but tough at the other end as a team. What's been the reason for that difference?

Yeah, what you, said, scored a lot of goals this season, but at the other end we're struggling this season a lot, and I think that's the most important for me, is that we just turn this around. If we don't even score goals anymore, we just start playing better and getting results. I think that's the most important part for me, so that's my main focus also, to turn this around with everyone involved.

You described earlier the 'nonsense' and some of the stories we hear from the players in the dressing room, are they just made up by people outside the dressing room, and what do you guys think when you read them, see them or hear them?

Yeah, what you said, sometimes we just read things by ourselves, by the players as well, and then we're just like, what is this? The other day when we read something about one guy that said to everyone that he's probably going to leave and doesn't care about the situation they're in, and then someone reads this and we're just like, how does this come out? People are just making things up, and it's just frustrating for us as well, because it brings so much more trouble as well, because the fans are starting to believe this.

They start saying, the guys don't care anymore what's going to happen in the club about the situation, but trust me, all the people involved on the pitch, the staff, the players, everyone, they care so much about the situation we're in right now. We just want to turn things around, and that's the most important, that's the main focus for everyone. And then if some reports just start saying that guys don't care anymore, it's just frustrating for our guys.

How frustrating is it that fans who once chanted your name now feel differently about you because of what they’ve read or heard?

It’s frustrating because people start making things up and people start thinking about me in a different way. That’s what I think. I can’t change something about this. For me it’s just more important that I keep playing like I do now. I just want to stay fit and turn things around. Obviously, the last games from my side hasn’t been the best and I know that as well. For me, it’s just most important that I keep showing to everyone that I always give 100 per cent to this club. I will always do as long as I play. For me, the most important is that we turn things around right now. If people say things, then people say things. Obviously people are going to believe things that are not true. There’s nothing I can do about that.

How much can you use the spirit of Bilbao to help save you in the Premier League and with Atletico?

Tomorrow it’s just a beautiful game. We have nothing to lose. We want to do something special. We’re going to give everything to change it around and of course we know it’s going to be difficult because we’re three goals down. But we’re going to do everything to change things around. Tomorrow first and then afterwards it’s the Premier League games coming up. I think the guys showed some great character last weekend against Liverpool and we can build on that.

Set the scene on Sunday when you watched the game from home, the emotions as you sat there helpless?

You just watch it at home and you just see the guys fighting every second of the game. Even when we went behind 1-0, you just see the guys keep going, keep going … [we] created chances. You’re just sitting there on the sofa and just hoping that the guys score a goal because it’s what they deserved. What they showed …. the character they showed in the game was unbelievable and when Richie scores and it’s 1-1, it’s just happiness at home, screaming towards the TV … just happy for him and just happy for the team. And then afterwards, yeah, just happy for the guys. That’s what they deserved.

How hard is it for you?

It’s obviously difficult. When you’re not in a good flow with the team and then people start saying things about you, that’s never easy. But it’s also part of life, it’s something you have to deal with. I just try to not read a lot of things and just stay off my phone and spend time with my family and friends. When I’m back here I’m just trying to do everything to change things around and I think that’s most important but obviously it’s been a tough period.

With that slip against Atletico, was it your boots or the pitch?

I think you can’t do something about slipping. It just happened. I played with the same boots I always played with so it’s nothing to do with the boots. After the moment and after the game you start thinking ‘did I do something different to what I normally do?’ I was like ‘nah, it’s just a bit unlucky that it just happened in this moment’. You saw it with Toni as well with the first goal and I think a lot of us slipped as well in this game so it was not something where I was like ‘ahh this was something i could do (differently)’.

Think back to May, Spurs win Europa League, how have Tottenham got themselves in this situation where they are struggling to win at home and in a relegation battle. What has this season been like from your perspective?

Tough. Yeah, that’s the only word I have for it to be honest. If you see how we ended last season, that’s obviously a top thing and how you end up this season, it’s really tough for everyone at the club and this is not a position anyone wants to be in. It is just a thing that we need to change around everyone together. It has just been a tough season overall, but it’s not finished yet and we have some more games to come.

Micky van de Ven has blasted suggestions Tottenham Hotspur players have "switched off" as "nonsense". The Dutchman spoke to the press before Spurs' Champions League round of 16 second-leg clash against Atletico Madrid.

Under Igor Tudor, Tottenham began poorly losing all four of the Croatian's first four matches. Their 5-2 away loss to Atletico was particularly concerning, as the north Londoners conceded four goals in a disastrous opening 22 minutes.

However, Tudor watched his team fight their way to a 1-1 away draw to Liverpool which ended their rotten run of defeats. Ahead of the second-leg clash against Atletico tomorrow evening, Van de Ven lashed out at suggestions many of his Spurs colleagues had checked out.

When he was asked about reports claiming Spurs players have "switched off" amongst the frustration of their recent form, Van de Ven said: "Of course I've seen things. Reporters just say things sometimes and it's like 'How did you come up with this?

"Like players have switched off. It's not true. They say players are going to leave either way. It's just nonsense and people start believing it."

When asked again about those stories and their impact on the dressing room, he said: "Sometimes we just read things about ourselves and other players. We are just like, 'What is this?'

"We read something about one guy who said they were going to leave and doesn't care about the situation they are in, and then someone reads this and it's like 'How does this come out?'

"People just make things up and it's frustrating for us because it brings so much more trouble. The fans then start to believe this or start saying 'Oh the guys do not care anymore. What's going to happen with the club?'

"But, trust me, all of the people involved on the pitch, all of the staff, the players, everyone, they care so much about the situation we are in and we just want to turn things around. That's the main focus for everyone. If some reports are saying the guys don't care anymore, it's just frustrating for our guys."

Van de Ven missed the match against Liverpool as he was serving a suspension from his red card in the 3-1 away defeat to Crystal Palace. Spurs' draw with the Merseysiders means they remain one point in front of 18th placed West Ham and 17th placed Nottingham Forest, who drew with Manchester City and Fulham respectively.

Meanwhile, in Europe, Spurs will need to win by at least three goals just to force extra-time against the La Liga side. Diego Simeone's team will be without first-choice goalkeeper Jan Oblak, which is a huge boost for Tudor's men, who will be up against it in north London.

Igor Tudor has provided an injury update ahead of Tottenham Hotspur's clash against Atletico Madrid. The Lilywhites will host Diego Simeone's side on Wednesday night as they look to overcome a three-goal deficit in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League last-16.

Speaking to reporters at Hotspur Way on Tuesday afternoon, the interim Spurs head coach announced that Joao Palhinha and Conor Gallagher will be unavailable for selection. Tudor also confirmed that Destiny Udogie and Lucas Bergvall, who were spotted in training at Hotspur Way a few hours prior, will be named on the bench.

Speaking to reporters at Hotspur Way on Tuesday afternoon, the interim head coach said: "Joao, no. Destiny and Lucas will be on the bench tomorrow. One part of the game, not too much because they have just started training with us, but it's good to see them."

The former Juventus boss later declared Cristian Romero fit for the match. The Tottenham skipper, who suffered a head injury following a collision with Palhinha in the first leg, was also involved in training earlier in the day.

"Romero, he's there. You saw him in training today? He can play. Joao, no, he's a little bit worse, so he'll be (available) for the next game. Romero is in."

Conor Gallagher, however, was absent from training as he continue to nurse a virus, which has affected his breathing. The former Chelsea midfielder was left out of the matchday squad at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

When quizzed on Gallagher, whom Spurs signed from Atletico for £35m in January, Tudor said: "We see today what we can do because he has, as you know, probably asthma problems.

"He has some virus to make some not nice things so we are going to see tomorrow if he is able to go on the bench," added the temporary Tottenham boss. "Nothing like a danger but still he is not able to play."

During the pre-match press conference, Micky van de Ven, who sat beside Tudor, took the opportunity to squash reports claiming that players had began to down tools. The Spurs defender said: "Of course I've seen things [written].

"Reporters just say things sometimes and it's like how did you come up with this, like players have switched off. It's not true. They say players are going to leave either way. It's just nonsense and people start believing it."

Van de Ven added: "The other day when we read that one guy told the rest of the team that he doesn't care because he's leaving anyway. It's like how does this come out? It's just made up. And the fans will believe it. It's just frustrating for us guys."

Here's what we spotted at Tottenham's training session at Hotspur Way on Tuesday morning ahead of their Champions League match

Tottenham's players were out in the sunshine on the pitches of Hotspur Way ahead of the Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.

Spurs have a 5-2 deficit to make up after the first leg of the last 16 clash in Madrid even if all eyes are on Sunday's huge Premier League match against Nottingham Forest as both teams fight to escape the drop. The north London side will take some confidence into this week from their battling performance to grab a point at Liverpool at the weekend to finally end their six-game losing streak.

football.london watched the opening stages of training at the club's Enfield-based training complex on Tuesday morning as interim head coach Igor Tudor and his staff worked with the players and here are some of the key questions from the session and the answers we took from it.

Who was back?

There was a hat-trick of good news for Tottenham fans. First captain Cristian Romero was involved in training after seemingly coming out of the concussion protocol following that clash of heads in Spain last week.

Tudor had said last week that Destiny Udogie was close to returning and the Italian was involved in training with the group on Tuesday after his hamstring injury. There was also an extra returning face in Lucas Bergvall, who was on the grass with his team-mates after recovering swiftly from surgery on his left ankle back in January.

Micky van de Ven is also available again following his suspension against Liverpool at the weekend.

Who was missing?

Richarlison is suspended from Wednesday's game after reaching the yellow card limit and he was working in the gym rather than out on the training pitches, which might just be part of his normal routine.

Joao Palhinha could be seen working alone with a member of the sports science staff, jogging around a nearby pitch, which would suggest he is not yet out of the concussion protocol.

Conor Gallagher travelled to Liverpool at the weekend but was too ill on the day of the game to take part and he was not involved in training on Tuesday. The same goes for Yves Bissouma, who is dealing with a muscle injury.

Where was James Maddison?

You can always guarantee a James Maddison sighting at an open training session and the midfielder emerged before the rest of the team did on Tuesday.

He went off to a far pitch at the other side of the first team area to continue his rehabilitation in the sunshine after that ACL injury last summer.

Whether the 29-year-old will return this season remains to be seen but he is continuing to work hard and no risks will be taken over his reintegration into the group when it's decided he is ready. It's worth remembering that Radu Dragusin for example was back in training with the team for a couple of months before he made his return to the pitch on December 28 last year. Using that as a guide, it might be tight for Maddison to be back this season if he's not back with the group yet.

What were the spirits like?

The sun was shining and Tottenham had ended their losing streak with a well-earned point at Liverpool to spirits were high. There was plenty of laughter amid the hard work in the early stages of the session.

One of the early warm-ups brought a reaction test in which players sprinted the way the coach told them. That brought cheers and laughter for those who reacted or guessed right, like Pape Matar Sarr and Kevin Danso, and finger pointing and more laughs as speedier players like Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence darted the wrong way as they guessed incorrectly.

Who fell over?

There was great hilarity before that as the Spurs players set off on a run around the pitch to start their warm-up as one of them ended up on their backside on the grass immediately.

Mathys Tel appeared to trip over a ball that rolled his way and the Frenchman took a tumble to the turf. It was a slip that sparked guffaws from the group, especially those around him, and he saw the funny side as well.

Tottenham will be hoping for no more slip-ups this week and only the happy faces.

As Tottenham Hotspur prepare for their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, football london took a look at the players expected to miss the second-leg

Igor Tudor could be missing as many as 12 players for Tottenham Hotspur's Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid – however, Diego Simeone is expected to be without first-team goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Spurs trail the La Liga giants 5-2 after their first-half collapse in the Spanish capital. However, the mood has been improved slightly with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Liverpool on the weekend. The heat is still firmly on Igor Tudor, who has lost four of his first five matches.

His main focus will be on remaining in the Premier League, but with Atletico coming to north London for the second leg, his side will be expected to at least put up a fight. Unfortunately for the Croatian, he will have to do so without a huge number of players.

Tudor will be without long-term absentees. James Maddison (ACL) and Dejan Kulusevski, who have not played a single minute of football this year, although there is a chance the latter may feature before the end of the campaign. When asked about the Swede, who has been out with a patella injury, Tudor said: “He's had really big problems. But he's positive. And also the doctors are positive. So we'll see, next week, how it's going.”

Moreover, Ben Davies has also seemingly played his last game after breaking his ankle against West Ham in January, while Rodrigo Bentancur is not expected to return until after March's international break, having undergone hamstring surgery.

Wilson Odobert's campaign was also ended with his ACL injury against Newcastle United, while Mohammed Kudus (hamstring) is not expected to feature again until April at the earliest. Lucas Bergvall is still battling back to fitness after having ankle surgery at the end of January, with an April return understood to be realistic.

Yves Bissouma and Micky van de Ven also both missed the draw against Liverpool, and it remains to be seen if they will be fit to face Atletico. When it comes to left-back Destiny Udogie, Tudor suggested he may be fit to face Nottingham Forest this weekend but cast doubt on his hopes of playing in the Champions League.

Spurs fans will also be crossing their fingers Conor Gallagher will be well to face his former side after illness forced him to sit out the clash against the Merseysiders. A painful evening last Tuesday was also summed up by Spurs' double injury blow at the very end of the battle at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha clashed heads with each other in a freak collision, and both suffered a concussion. They had to miss the away trip to Liverpool, and it remains to be seen if they will be able to face Atletico.

However, Simeone also has some injury issues of his own. Oblak, who has been regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world for nearly ten years, will miss the game after suffering a muscle strain before Atletico's 1-0 win over Getafe.

Here are our Tottenham talking points after their battling 1-1 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday

This was a match that should have gone horribly wrong for Tottenham Hotspur but they chose to fight, not cry.

The form guide suggested it should have been a horror show and the team Spurs started the match with never actually trained together at Hotspur Way this week. Igor Tudor even went to grab Arne Slot pre-match to say a warm hello with a big grin....only to realise a little too late that it was actually Spurs' team manager and player liaison officer Allan Dixon.

From the back, the long-serving staff member does bear a passing resemblance to his fellow follically-challenged Dutchman, but the look on Tudor's face when he realised before rushing over to the true Slot was something to behold.

Add to that playing a 19-year-old left-back as a right winger and then conceding just 18 minutes in from a Dominik Szoboszlai free-kick that Guglielmo Vicario could only palm into his own net, the 11th goal the Italian has conceded from outside his box this season.

That all should have spelt disaster for a Spurs side that is one of only two teams of the 92 across Europe's four top divisions yet to win a league game in 2026. Sheffield Wednesday, who have already been relegated from the Championship, are the other.

Yet huge credit must go to Tottenham and their 13 available senior players for coming away with a point from Anfield. They created the chances that could have brought a first victory for the north London side at the stadium since 2011.

It finally seemed to click for these Spurs players that if they are going to get out of trouble then they are going to have to go to war. Tudor had issued a battle cry before the match that it was time to fight and not cry, and there was no weeping to be found.

In Richarlison up front they had their general, someone who has been there, done it and bought the 'I survived relegation' t-shirt. Everton fans adore the Brazilian for his crucial goals in keeping them up.

Now the striker might just have provided the moment with his 90th minute equaliser that grabs Tottenham out of their current death spiral and pushes them back up to the surface.

Conor Gallagher had travelled with the team to Liverpool on Saturday night. He had trained with them after seeming to recover from a fever earlier in the week. However, the midfielder woke up on Sunday morning still feeling out of sorts and that meant Tudor needed to rip up his plans for the game later that day.

He had hinted in his pre-match press conference that Archie Gray would have to play in a fourth different position under him which suggested the 20-year-old was going to play as a centre-back on the right of a back three.

Instead the former Leeds man was required in the centre of the park alongside Pape Matar Sarr and that meant a back four instead behind them. The alternative is that Gallagher was simply going to play where Souza did on the right.

FOLLOW OUR TOTTENHAM FB PAGE! Latest Spurs news, analysis and much more via our dedicated Facebook page

The matchday squad chosen spoke volumes. Tudor named just seven substitutes from the nine he could have selected. They included two goalkeepers, just two senior players and three academy teenagers. The Croatian could have drafted in another couple of youngsters on the bench but he was making it clear just how tough this job is.

The scarcity of senior players continues to make Tottenham's January transfer window look more and more like a horrible gamble with every passing week.

Sporting director Johan Lange made a big point after that window closed about the lack of players available in the market to help them even in the short term and how Spurs had players who would return from injury to help them.

Six weeks on and Tudor having just 12 fit outfield senior players showed the brutal reality rather than the hope the club built their transfer window upon. The Croatian picking just seven substitutes was his message to Lange and anyone watching that said 'look what I'm having to deal with'.

Tudor is the latest Tottenham manager to remark that he has never experienced anything like this in his career. Thomas Frank said it before him, as did Ange Postecoglou before that. Managing at Spurs appears to require one hand to be tied behind your back at all times.

All of which should only add credit to the Tottenham fightback at Anfield. For after the hour mark, Slot was able to bring on Mohamed Salah, Hugo Ekitike and Curtis Jones in a triple change.

Tudor's final changes of the night were 19-year-old academy players Callum Olusesi and James Roswell, both making their Premier League debuts for the club.

In the centre of the pitch, 20-year-old Gray and 23-year-old Sarr formed a young pairing and provided the energy that drove the visitors through the game.

"I liked them very much in the Atletico game as well, in the middle. They have both things, good energy, running and quality," Tudor told football.london.

"I would like to have this consistency with the team, you know, like other coaches. Today, seeing the bench of Liverpool, it's like, it makes you feel different. So, without having a complete squad at the time, you can't work on a daily base, everything is almost impossible.

"So the job is hard to do, sometimes maybe you cannot even imagine, because you are outside, how difficult is the job to do here, and in the end, it is always about results. So if there are no results, you know, it's always like someone who is charged, he's not probably, he's not working good, he's not good enough, but... okay."

It was a strange match at Anfield. Liverpool had all the possession, with 63.4 per cent of it, and they had dangerous moments in the Spurs box with 45 touches inside it and 159 successful final third passes to Spurs' 60. Yet Alisson Becker was the busier of the two goalkeepers with six saves to make.

The difference with Tottenham compared to previous performances was that they refused to give an inch. They ran further than Liverpool, they covered more distance, they racked up more tackles, interceptions, blocks and clearances and they won more ground duels than their hosts.

Sarr was key in the midfield, recording more defensive contributions than anyone else on the pitch with 17, including nine ball recoveries, four clearances, two interceptions and two tackles. He collapsed to the grass exhausted at the final whistle.

Djed Spence won 100 per cent of his ground duels, Sarr 83 per cent, Dominic Solanke 80 per cent of them and Kevin Danso battled away in the centre of defence. There is no other defender in the game who limps around as much as the Austrian international, after banging the turf in frustration to make you think his game is over yet he carries on anyway.

He is a warrior and so is Radu Dragusin, who grew in confidence as the game wore on after numerous poor touches and passes. The Romanian still has sharpness to rediscover after missing such a large chunk of his career to that ACL injury but he gives his all and made a key block in the final moments to help save the point.

Everything had culminated in Richarlison's big moment. The Brazilian had sent three other shots on target, appearing to be held by Virgil van Dijk for one, and he directed one header just wide late in the first half.

In the end, such is football fate, it was probably his worst shot that rolled into the goal, a scuffed effort that seemed to hit both of his feet, but he and Tottenham could not care less. The players and staff went wild, Tudor leapt in the air and Richarlison gave his best impression of Ekitike's arms crossed celebration.

The Brazil striker had earned that moment of fortune by being a thorn in Liverpool's side all game and it's a role he has enjoyed throughout his time in England. No other opposition player has been involved in as many goals against the Reds than Richarlison's six goals and three assists.

He is also the only player in the Premier League era to have scored two goals at Anfield in the 90th minute as a visitor.

This latest strike was his 100th goal involvement in the Premier League, with 73 goals and 27 assists to his name. Roberto Firmino (132) and Gabriel Jesus (118) are the only other Brazilians to provide more.

The strike pairing of Richarlison and Solanke looks to be the way forward for Spurs to ensure they keep getting shots on goal and it was the Brazilian who was the hero on the day.

"Richy was great," said Spence. "He's scored a lot of goals for us this season like that. He's brought us back in a lot of games, so we're happy with him and he's a great player."

On what that goal felt like for the squad, the full-back responded: "Happiness, relief. It's massive for us. We need to get as many points as we can."

football.london asked Tudor if that can be the moment that launches Spurs back on an upward trajectory.

"Yeah, we hope, you know. It's a long way to our goal, which is to stay in the Premier League, still a lot of games to play, but today was important to show what they showed, independent of the result," he said.

"When you are honest, you need to be honest, give everything, then the football will give you back.

"Those were my words before the game, so this happened today. It was not easy, and now we need to see what to do in these two games, in front of us, to see who is able to play, who is not able to play, who is injured, who is not injured, so it's not easy.

"We continue to have problems from that point of view, the numbers, but that's why this result is even more important."

There was still time for that Premier League debut for Callum Olusesi, with 20 minutes to his name, and a busier than expected final minute or so for James Rowswell. Both 19-year-olds acquitted themselves well.

Olusesi was confident and assured with all of his nine touches, the same amount as Souza had in just under an hour. Both had 100% pass success, the midfielder with eight passes and the Brazilian with his three.

Rowswell probably expected that he was going to come on just as the referee blew the whistle. Instead Liverpool had one last break up the pitch and the big teenager played a big part in holding them up before Dragusin got in that block.

"It's all I've been working on, everything's been leading up to this moment and I'm just so grateful and so happy for it to come around," said a beaming Rowswell. "Definitely a proud moment for me and my family. I'm just very grateful for this opportunity to come around."

Olusesi added: "It's great. I'm happy for James as well. Obviously, I've seen the hard work he's put in training every day. Now that his time has come, I'm happy for him. It shows the academy that there is a chance if you keep working hard and believe in it."

At the final whistle, the Spurs players and the travelling supporters acknowledged each other for a moment. The fans had been noisy throughout and the squad, shorn of Romero, Van de Ven, Palhinha and a remarkable list of 10 others, had earned their respect.

Tudor applauded the supporters as well but hang back slightly in order to let the players have their moment.

The 47-year-old told football.london what it felt like to get his first Premier League point on the board.

"Nice! Some fresh air, some good things for the confidence of the players, everyone around the club and especially the fans," he said. "Good team spirit, seeing the circumstances the team was in today, coming here at Anfield with 12 [outfield] players.

"So this is something big. We stayed in the game, we believed, I felt that we could score the goal, the players also felt it, so, ok, it's nice."

Tudor needed a performance from his team that showed togetherness and he needed to show that he could arrest the slump in front of the watching CEO Vinai Venkatesham and owner Vivienne Lewis.

On a weekend when West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Leeds all grabbed a point apiece, nobody expected Spurs to also take one home from Anfield but they did. It could end up being a vital one when it comes down to it, but only if it is the spark that lights the torch.

Wednesday night brings the Champions League second leg against Atletico Madrid but only at Spurs could that pale into insignificance to Sunday's Premier League game against Forest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A victory would provide an important cushion between them and their visitors while West Ham travel to a Villa side desperately needing to get back on track in the top four chase after being given a help in that by Spurs' point at Anfield.

Leeds host a Brentford side chasing European football and Tottenham must take advantage of the fact that they face Forest and Leeds at home in the weeks ahead while travelling to Wolves and Sunderland. None of them are easy games but Spurs must build on this result.

Tudor just wants to look forward now after a week in which everyone thought Spurs would do the same at his expense.

Yet he came out fighting both in the dugout and out of it. His press conference and interview style is unpredictable. He can go any which way he chooses and you know when he has decided enough is enough.

His interview with Sky Sports showed his exasperation with questions about his future and in his press conference afterwards he played down that topic. The Croatian finds it irritating that he should answer questions about his future even after a positive performance.

"The job of a coach, you know how it is, I am coaching 15 years, never was I thinking one second about my future, one second even," he said.

"I never think about my future, my past, I always think about training tomorrow, how to help the players. I don't read anything, don't watch anything, the future is just imagination, the future doesn't exist.

"It's a constant thing, of today, of tomorrow, training, so I don't lose energy thinking what will happen. It doesn't give you anything, never, this job in football, in life, nothing, just focus on now, here, that's the key, for the players even, you can get away from the fever in this way.

"What are they thinking, what will happen, brings you in a state of mind which gives you nothing, so stay in the now, be focused on what you can change, that's what every coach is doing."

Tudor did not lose focus. He and his Tottenham side fought at Anfield rather than crumbled and cried at the mess around them.

The Croatian called it "a good start" and that's exactly what it is. This is just the beginning as eight huge battles lie ahead.

Tottenham Hotspur drawing 1-1 with Liverpool at Anfield saw Igor Tudor receive some credit for using Dominic Solanke and Richarlison to give Spurs an outlet up front

Roy Keane praised Igor Tudor for playing Dominic Solanke and Richarlison up front together for Tottenham Hotspur during their 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

Both forwards formed a partnership at Anfield, with the Brazilian scoring their 90th-minute equaliser. Second-half substitute Randal Kolo Muani assisted the goal, but Solanke proved problematic for Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk.

Spurs trailed for well over an hour of the match, but earned their first Premier League point since February. 1 Doing so ended a run of six straight defeats across all competitions, the last five of which were since the interim appointment of Tudor.

Keane gave the coach credit for playing two forwards. He said on Sky Sports: "[Spurs' strikers] gave them an outlet and Liverpool struggled to deal with it.

"You always think there is a softness to Spurs, but the physicality of the two players up front was a huge bonus. They were knocking people over.

"Between now and the end of the season, they'll have battles every week. Forest are their next game - huge."

Keane also said: "Spurs dug deep. People have been poking fun at Spurs the last few months, but today they showed that fighting spirit.

"It was ugly sometimes. They went direct; the goal came from direct play. It was unlike Tottenham.

"They showed spirit, fight and quality at the right time. To go a goal down, I thought we'd find out about these lads today. You have to give them credit; they deserved it. Towards the end, Liverpool had one or two chances, but Tottenham could have gone on to win it.

Jamie Redknapp singled out Richarlison for particular praise. He said: "All game, [Richarlison] was a thorn in their side, Gomez and Van Dijk. He had a bit of physicality.

"Spurs might have fallen on a system here, with two strikers: Richarlison and Solanke. They're a handful; they were powerful.

"It wasn't pretty, but they had opportunities. It just became uncomfortable for Liverpool. The longer it went on, you thought [Spurs] would get something."

Here are our Tottenham player ratings after their battling draw at Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon

Tottenham grabbed a much-needed 1-1 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday and here are our player ratings from the game at Anfield.

Igor Tudor had to name a Tottenham team that was missing 13 players including Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha as they are in the concussion protocol following their clash of heads at the end of the Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid. He was also missing Yves Bissouma with a muscle problem, Micky van de Ven through suspension and Conor Gallagher who has had fever.

Guglielmo Vicario returned in goal for Antonin Kinsky among four changes for Spurs with Dominic Solanke, Souza and Radu Dragusin coming into the side. To make a point about just how few players he had to pick from, Tudor named just seven substitutes on the bench with two goalkeepers, two senior outfield players and three youngsters.

Tottenham started brightly with Souza, playing as a right winger, forcing Alisson Becker into a save but Dominik Szoboszlai put Liverpool ahead with a free-kick that Vicario should have done better with, getting only a weak hand to it and helping it on its way in.

Richarlison had a couple of big headed chances at the end of the first half, Alisson saving one well. The Liverpool keeper remained busy in the second period even if Spurs looked vulnerable at the back.

It was the busy Richarlison who found a leveller in the 90th minute. A long Vicario kick ended up at the feet of substitute Randal Kolo Muani and he knocked it to the Brazilian to scuff low into the net.

Here are our Spurs player ratings from the game:

Guglielmo Vicario

Should have done better with Szoboszlai's free-kick, pushing it into his own net. Did make a terrific save on 36 minutes, pushing Gakpo's strike on to the left-hand post. His kicking puts his team-mates into trouble too many times. Has now conceded 11 goals from outside the area, four more than any other keeper. Was involved in the equaliser though with his long kick. 5

Pedro Porro

Ngumoha gave him nightmares, turning him inside out but he got better as the game wore on. 5

Kevin Danso

Spurs' best defender by a mile. Limped around, battling for everything. 8

Radu Dragusin

Awful with the ball at his feet. So many misplaced passes or nervy touches. He got better as the second half wore on but he had some scary moments. 4

Djed Spence

Didn't offer too much at either end of the pitch. To be fair to him, playing alongside the nervy Dragusin won't have helped him. 5

Souza

Started on the right wing and had an effort tipped over by Alisson 11 minutes in. Some iffy moments when coming back to defend but was also involved in a chance for Richarlison later in the first half. Struggled to track back in the second half and was replaced by Xavi. A mixed bag from the teenager and he only touched the ball nine times. 5

Archie Gray

Back in midfield and he once again put in the performance of someone much older than him. Switched to left-back late on and had to deal with Salah. 7

Pape Matar Sarr

A willing runner if not always using the ball well. Getting used to playing alongside Gray though and he was instrumental in Spurs keeping things tight throughout with his work rate. 7

Mathys Tel

Worked hard after taking an early clearance to the face. Set up Richarlison for a big chance late in the first half. Switched to the right after Xavi's introduction but couldn't offer as much down that flank. 6

Dominic Solanke

Almost picked out Souza after a good early run into the box. Still trying to find his sharpness although he looks fitter. 5

Richarlison

Involved in most Spurs' best attacking in the first half, heading wide himself later ahead of the break before forcing Alisson into a save with another header. Another effort saved on 54 minutes when Van Dijk looked to be pulling him back. Sent another powerful effort at his compatriot Alisson which the goalkeeper gathered at the second attempt. Deserved his late equaliser. 8

Subs

Xavi Simons

His first touch was a blocked shot. Took the game to Liverpool late on even if his final ball was lacking. 6

Callum Olusesi

On for Premier League debut and having just turned 19, he looked bright and confident with some assured touches. 6

Randal Kolo Muani

Grabbed the important late assist and battled well in his cameo. 7

James Rowswell
