'The best ever'... West Ham fans decide between Tottenham relegation and Arsenal finishing second again - Hammers News
Description

West Ham supporters are not only interested in their own team’s results in the Premier League run-in but also in their rivals.

The Hammers obviously have a vested interest in Tottenham losing games, as it would help them avoid relegation.

Meanwhile, they would also enjoy watching fellow London club Arsenal finish second in the title race again.

West Ham supporters have now decided whether they would rather Spurs go down or Arsenal bottle the league title.

Assuming West Ham stay up, would you rather see Arsenal bottle the league or Tottenham go down? 🤔

Tell us why in the comments… 👇

West Ham supporters want Tottenham to fail more than Arsenal

As West Ham are in competition with Tottenham in the relegation battle, we excluded the direct implications for the Hammers.

We specifically asked fans on our new platform, TalkingPoints, to assume that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will survive.

Therefore, the debate would only come down to West Ham supporters’ dislike for their two biggest Premier League rivals.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Our poll received over 600 votes, with 88 percent preferring Spurs to be relegated rather than Arsenal missing out on the title again.

“Has to be Spurs going down,” explained one TalkingPoints user. “Nothing would give me greater pleasure… and the bragging rights!!”

“Spurs going down would be the best ever,” another replied, suggesting Tottenham’s downfall would be a day to remember.

Five things we learned from the 4-0 win 👇

“That’s easy, Spurs go down! I think it would be nice for Arsenal to come 2nd again too though,” a West Ham fan wrote.

One supporter then mentioned another enjoyable possibility for the Hammers – Millwall failing to win promotion.

“Spurs to go and Millwall to bottle it, perfect scenario,” they said, with The Lions currently two points behind second-place Ipswich.

West Ham fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that Tottenham vs Millwall is a Championship fixture next season.

Simon Jordan’s West Ham U-turn after Spurs’ first game under Roberto De Zerbi - Hammers News
Description

Outspoken pundit Simon Jordan has been adamant all season that West Ham will be relegated – but now he has changed his mind after watching Tottenham’s first game under Roberto De Zerbi.

West Ham have Premier League survival in their own hands after dumping bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur into the relegation zone at the weekend.

The Hammers have climbed out of the bottom three for only the third time all season at the expense of Spurs, who have not won a league game in 2026.

Up until quite recently, most journalists, pundits and fans have felt Tottenham would “wake up” and pull out of trouble sooner or later with West Ham the favourites to join Wolves and Burnley in the Championship.

Jordan now believes Spurs will drop instead of West Ham

Simon Jordan has never hidden his disdain for West Ham’s majority owner David Sullivan and so it should be no surprise he rarely has much positive to say about the east Londoners.

Not that there have been many positives for Jordan to run his silver tongue about in the last couple of years.

How worried should we be about De Zerbi joining Tottenham? 😟

Jordan has insisted all season that West Ham will be relegated and has been one of the many dismissing the possibility of Tottenham going down.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

That has all changed now, though.

Jordan has made a seismic West Ham U-turn after watching Spurs’ first game under new boss Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham hoped the Italian’s arrival would spark an instant revival in north London, but while West Ham beat Wolves 4-0, De Zerbi lost his first match 1-0 at Sunderland.

With Mohammed Kudus and now captain Cristian Romero ruled out for the season, Tottenham’s issues are piling up.

De Zerbi has made an honest West Ham admission after one game as Spurs boss.

Now Jordan has admitted he is reconsidering his prediction the Hammers will drop, with Spurs ‘the only side not showing anything’.

Jordan: West Ham momentum puts Spurs in ‘mortal danger’ of relegation

Jordan says West Ham continuing their momentum leaves Tottenham in ‘mortal danger’ of relegation.

And while he rates De Zerbi and expects him to get a tune out of his players, Jordan pointed out he’s no wizard.

“De Zerbi isn’t Harry Potter. He isn’t going to be able to just turn it around instantaneously, there’s no magic wand,” Jordan said on talkSPORT, which you can watch in the video below.

“They are in mortal jeopardy now, Spurs. Clearly, obviously, there’s no doubt about it. They’re in the bottom three. You can’t hide from it.

“Look, I can’t forecast Spurs are going to stay in this division now, because my belief was that somehow or another West Ham would run out of momentum. But when you go and beat Wolves 4-0, and you keep the momentum going, the belief will be in West Ham now. They’re out of the bottom three. The psychological battle will have been laid down for them.

“You know, Forest got back in and got a point against Aston Villa. The only team that’s not showing anything at this moment in time is Spurs. And so it becomes a very challenging perspective. And of course the story, if you talk about media-wise, the story is obviously, if you want a media story, Spurs getting relegated, isn’t it?”

Jordan is right about the Hammers having all the momentum after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side made it 18 points from 12 games while Tottenham have one point from 24.

What will be interesting now is how the Hammers respond to the pressure of being the hunted rather than the hunter.

Tottenham face another tough test when they welcome De Zerbi’s old club Brighton to north London next while West Ham go to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

If Tottenham don’t win and West Ham pick up another three points, the Hammers will be four or five points clear of their rivals with five games to go.

Roberto De Zerbi makes honest West Ham admission after one game as Spurs boss - Hammers News
Description

New Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has made an honest admission about what West Ham have done to his side after just one game at the helm.

West Ham climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone with an emphatic 4-0 win over Wolves on Friday night.

That was made sweeter by the fact it pushed bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur into the drop zone as a result.

The Hammers remained out of the bottom three – for just the third time all season – when Tottenham lost Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge 1-0 at Sunderland on Sunday.

De Zerbi says West Ham have put fear of relegation into Spurs

West Ham have survival in their own hands after the Spurs loss and De Zerbi has already suffered what looks like a serious injury blow to Cristian Romero.

Now De Zerbi has made an honest West Ham admission after one game as Spurs boss.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR, WE’RE COMING FOR YOU 👀

Five things we learned from the 4-0 win 👇

And it suggests the Hammers have dealt a massive psychological blow to Tottenham.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Ahead of the return of the Premier League after the international break, Paul Merson said West Ham could make Spurs crumble despite the arrival of De Zerbi.

The pundit stated that West Ham beating Wolves would be the ‘worst thing that could ever happen to Tottenham’ because once they were in the bottom three, the pressure would become overwhelming.

Now De Zerbi has admitted West Ham pushing Spurs into the bottom three with six games to go has indeed had a major impact on his players because it has put the realisation and fear of relegation into their minds.

“I think so yeah (the fear of relegation is now the problem for his Spurs players)…” De Zerbi admitted on BBC Sport.

“They have the quality to win one game and the target now, the closest target is to win one game, because if we win a game, we can see everything in a different way.

How worried should we be about De Zerbi joining Tottenham? 😟

“You know me as a coach, but one very important part for my style of coaching is the mental part, to transfer the confidence of the players, to give what they need in terms of mentality and confidence.

“For that, we could play better because during the week they play better because their heads are clean. During the game, it is different for sure. My work to help them, to show them what they do during the week during the game.”

De Zerbi’s comments make it clear the Hammers already have Spurs on the ropes.

De Zerbi knows he has a tough task on his hands to solve the problems at Spurs and West Ham have made things even more difficult for the Italian by dealing such a huge psychological blow this late in the season.

The Hammers have all the momentum after picking up 18 points from 12 games while Tottenham are yet to win a league match in 2026.

The pressure of being the hunted rather than the hunter will be a different test for Nuno Espirito Santo and his players, though.

Spurs face another tough test when they welcome De Zerbi’s old club Brighton to north London next while West Ham go to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

West Ham survival in their own hands as Spurs lose and Romero breaks down - Hammers News
Description

West Ham United officially have Premier League survival in their own hands after Spurs lost and saw captain Cristian Romero leave the field injured in floods of tears.

The Hammers piled pressure on Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge of bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a 4-0 win over Wolves on Friday night.

While Tottenham did look more solid at Sunderland, they lost the game 1-0 – meaning West Ham remain out of the relegation zone for at least a week – for only the third time this season – with six games to go.

A deflected Nordi Mukiele strike from outside the box was the difference but profligate Sunderland should have won by more.

West Ham survival in own hands after Spurs loss

Tottenham showed very little in an attacking sense that would necessarily worry relegation rivals such as West Ham, Leeds and Nottingham Forest.

It means West Ham now have Premier League survival very much in their own hands while Spurs are relying on them or others to slip up.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR, WE’RE COMING FOR YOU 👀

Five things we learned from the 4-0 win 👇

To make matters worse for Spurs, captain and star defender Cristian Romero went off injured after a clash with his own goalkeeper.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Romero was down for some time and was comforted by a host of his Tottenham teammates as he broke down in tears when signalling to the bench he needed to come off.

The Argentine was inconsolable as he left the field, appearing to mouth and gesture to teammates that the injury was serious.

Losing their leader would be a bitter blow for Tottenham’s hopes of survival and can only boost the likes of West Ham, who now know that they will stay up if they match Tottenham’s results in the last six games.

With a two-point cushion, the Hammers can even afford to get one less result than their London rivals.

There was decent news for West Ham from Nottingham Forest too, although it could and should have been even better.

Spurs captain Romero breaks down in tears after serious-looking injury

Aston Villa led 1-0 at the City Ground but Forest drew level and that’s how the score remained, meaning Vitor Pereira’s side sit one point above the Irons.

West Ham won’t be thanking Morgan Rogers, though, after he somehow blazed the ball over an empty net from close range to win it for Villa.

Where does the skipper rank among our biggest Premier League LEGENDS?

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are one point off Leeds, who have three key players out until May and face Man United away on Monday night.

The state of play for West Ham for the last six games is now clear.

Two wins and two draws would put the Hammers on 40 points.

That would then mean Spurs have to win three and draw one of their last six – or win four – to finish above the Hammers.

West Ham may even have the chance to extend the gap on Spurs to five points when they go to Crystal Palace next Monday night.

Spurs have a difficult home game against De Zerbi’s former club Brighton on Saturday night.

Forest will be confident of a victory as they welcome Burnley to the City Ground on Sunday.

Leeds will also be confident of a home win as they welcome Wolves.

But with injuries and the fact Wolves have looked much-improved under Rob Edwards, that may not be as straightforward as it looks.

Jamie Redknapp names two West Ham players giving them advantage over Spurs in relegation battle - Hammers News
Description

Jamie Redknapp was amazed by West Ham’s performance in their 4-0 victory over Wolves on Friday night.

The Hammers had the perfect start to the weekend, scoring four goals, keeping a clean sheet and overtaking Tottenham in the table.

Redknapp has now highlighted two key players who give West Ham an advantage over Spurs in the relegation battle.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR, WE’RE COMING FOR YOU 👀

Five things we learned from the 4-0 win 👇

Jamie Redknapp compares West Ham’s centre-backs to Tottenham’s

Dinos Mavropanos earned the Player of the Match award for his superb display against Wolves, scoring an unexpected brace.

At the other end, Mavropanos and Disasi defended brilliantly to keep just their fifth clean sheet of the league campaign.

Redknapp compared them to Spurs’ Christian Romero and Mickey van de Ven, suggesting West Ham have the better duo.

According to Redknapp, Mavropanos and Disasi are better suited to defending for teams in a relegation battle.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

“Mavropanos and Disasi look like a real partnership,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “They are the sort you want in a relegation fight. And even though they are better players, I’m not sure those two centre-backs at Tottenham are.

Assuming West Ham stay up, would you rather see Arsenal bottle the league or Tottenham go down? 🤔

Tell us why in the comments… 👇

“They think they’re too good for a relegation fight. Romero’s saying: ‘I’ve won the World Cup and now we’re in the bottom three.’ What they’re going to be doing under De Zerbi is he’ll be asking to play out the back, take risks in your six-yard box.

“What West Ham know is their limitations; they don’t take too many risks. Nottingham Forest and Leeds are like that as well. This is not the time to be thinking you’re a better player than what you are.

“This is the time to play to your maximum, show your desire, head it and tackle. You need moments from top players, but this is a time for cool heads. That’s what West Ham have shown here.”

Romero and Van de Ven certainly have higher market values, but they have not stepped up during Spurs’ dismal recent run.

Meanwhile, West Ham have as much confidence in Mavropanos and Disasi as they have in any centre-back pairing for years.

De Zerbi admits Mohammed Kudus plans ruined; ex-West Ham winger in 'crucial' Tottenham blow - Hammers News
Description

Roberto de Zerbi was looking forward to working with former West Ham United winger-turned Tottenham Hotspur defector Mohammed Kudus for the remaining seven matches of the Premier League season.

The Italian’s best-laid plans would go awry, however, just days after De Zerbi was appointed as Igor Tudor’s replacement down the road in North London.

Tottenham may be without Kudus for the remainder of 2025/26. The £54.5 million summer signing from West Ham United will potentially undergo surgery to correct a quad injury which has kept him on the sidelines since the turn of the year.

Sorry Pablo, but this team (if fit) are beating Wolves 👍

Any changes?

Tottenham Hotspur have lost Mohammed Kudus for West Ham relegation battle

Whatever Spurs did to get on the wrong side of Lady Luck, it is not too late for a bouquet of flowers and a grovelling apology.

De Zerbi, speaking ahead of Sunday’s tricky trip to Sunderland, confirms that goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and Rodrigo Bentancur are also unavailable alongside long-term absentees James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

“I started with not big luck! Kudus was, in my head, a crucial player, especially for the position,” De Zerbi told Football London at his press conference. “But we have to look forward. I think we have a lot of very good attackers.”

Kudus was hardly setting the world alight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, recording only two goals in 19 league matches.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Yet, the occasionally-scintillating, often-frustrating Ghana international was still one of the few genuine game-changers in a squad which has declined considerably since the Harry Kane/Heung-Min Son heyday.

How worried should we be about De Zerbi joining Tottenham? 😟

Roberto de Zerbi’s confidence in Spurs squad may be misplaced

De Zerbi talked up the talents of Randal Kolo Muani, Mathys Tel, Xavi Simons, Richarlison and Dominic Solanke before that clash at the Stadium of Light.

Take top scorer Richarlison out of the equation, however, and the remaining quartet have only seven league goals between them in 2025/26.

De Zerbi failed to win his first five Premier League matches in charge of Brighton and Hove Albion in 2022. It goes without saying that Spurs, who can slip into the relegation zone if West Ham beat Wolves on Friday night, cannot afford such a slow start.

“It is totally different this situation because we have no time to work like in Brighton, and I don’t want to put confusion inside of the players,” added the Italian.

“In the last period, I watched a lot of games, especially of Tottenham. We have very big players, young players [Lucas] Bergvall, Archie Gray, Mathys Tel, Xavi Simons, but in a way we have older players that are important like [Micky] Van de Ven.

“Van de Ven is a crucial player for me like [Christian] Romero, like [Pedro] Porro, like Solanke. I want to see again the same [Conor] Gallagher I loved at Chelsea. And I think I am lucky because I have a big confidence in my players and their qualities.

“For me, my target is to help them to play well and to enjoy with the ball because their characteristics are very clear for me.”

Stars aligning for West Ham as Leeds lose six stars in wake of Spurs blow - Hammers News
Description

The stars look to be aligning for Nuno Espirito Santo and West Ham after relegation rivals Leeds United confirmed injuries to six players.

West Ham are still reeling after Leeds United denied them an FA Cup semi-final place and trip to Wembley by beating them on penalties last weekend.

Paul Merson believes Leeds did West Ham a huge survival favour as a result of their victory in east London.

Now it looks like the stars really are aligning for West Ham as Leeds have lost six key players to injury – and three of them for at least the rest of April.

Major West Ham boost as Leeds lose six stars after Spurs blow

While nobody likes to see players get injured, at this stage of the season the news comes as a monumental boost to West Ham’s hopes of Premier League survival – potentially at the expense of Leeds.

It comes hot on the heels of news that former Hammer Mohammed Kudus will miss the rest of the season for Spurs after a serious injury setback.

Sorry Pablo, but this team (if fit) are beating Wolves 👍

Any changes?

West Ham actually face Leeds at the London Stadium again on the final day of the season.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Many believe that game could well dictate who stays in the Premier League in the four-way battle between the two clubs as well as Spurs and Forest.

If a point is enough to keep both the Hammers and Elland Road outfit safe on the last day, many predict Nuno Espirito Santo and Daniel Farke will be happy to settle for a draw.

West Ham will climb out of the relegation zone with a win over Wolves on Friday night, pushing Tottenham into the bottom three in the process ahead of their trip to Sunderland.

The Hammers will also go one point behind Leeds, who face a tough trip away to rivals Man United on Monday night.

That match has just got even tougher for Leeds too after Farke revealed Anton Stach, Joe Rodon and Daniel James will miss the rest of April.

Key Leeds trio to miss the rest of April and six out for Man United

Meanwhile another Leeds trio – Jaka Bijol, Noah Okafor and Gabriel Gudmundsson – are also doubtful for the trip to Old Trafford.

It means if West Ham take care of business against basement boys Wolves on Friday night, they can feel confident of remaining within a point of Leeds with six games to go.

The Hammers have a score to settle… ⚒️ v 🐺

What do YOU want to see in Friday's six-pointer?

Stach (ankle), Rodon (ankle) and James (adductor) will now miss Premier League games against Wolves and Bournemouth and may be touch and go for Burnley on May 1st.

Leeds face Spurs after that, meaning points are guaranteed to be dropped by at least one of West Ham’s relegation rivals.

So it is imperative the Irons remain in and around Leeds and Tottenham to take full advantage when that fixture rolls around.

The Hammers will want to know they have survival in their own hands going into that final day scenario against the team who cost them a first FA Cup semi-final for 20 years.

But it seems that match may have actually come at more of a cost to Leeds themselves.

The Hammers need to tread carefully, though.

Because West Ham’s media team have risked firing up Wolves with comments made ahead of the crunch survival clash.

Ironic boost for West Ham as Spurs suffer serious new Mohammed Kudus blow - Hammers News
Description

There may have been a huge twist to the Premier League relegation battle after West Ham were ironically boosted by a fresh setback suffered by Tottenham Hotspur’s Mohammed Kudus.

West Ham could have the last laugh over bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur when it comes to Mohammed Kudus.

The Hammers were taunted by Tottenham when they signed Kudus in a £54.5m deal last summer – but now he could be a big factor in Spurs being relegated.

West Ham and Tottenham are locked in a four-way relegation battle with Leeds and Forest to avoid joining Wolves and Burnley in the Championship.

West Ham boost as Kudus is ruled out for the season after Spurs setback

The Hammers will climb out of the bottom three with a win over Wolves on Friday night, pushing Spurs into the danger zone in the process.

Tottenham then face a difficult trip to Sunderland for Roberto De Zerbi’s first game in charge.

This team stays up ahead of Spurs 😎

Only debate is Dinos or Todibo….

West Ham have mixed feelings about Tottenham appointing De Zerbi, with the hope being the Italian takes time to get the team going.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

There have also been concerns in east London that Kudus will help turn Tottenham’s fortunes around as he makes his way back from a long-term injury.

Kudus had been pencilled in for a potential return at Sunderland having been back in training.

But now there has been an ironic boost for West Ham as Spurs suffer a serious new Kudus blow.

Kudus had hardly been setting the world alight with Tottenham since they goaded the Hammers about taking the Ghanaian winger off their hands.

He was however one of Tottenham’s better performers, highlighted by the fact they haven’t won a game since he suffered his injury.

How worried should we be about De Zerbi joining Tottenham? 😟

It seems Spurs won’t be able to bank on Kudus helping them to survival in the final seven games, though, because he has suffered a setback which could require surgery – ruling him out for the rest of the season and possibly the World Cup too.

The 25-year-old has been out since January with related quad and hamstring injuries.

The Sun claims the new issue is related to Kudus’ quad again and sources suggest he may have to go under the knife.

It is reported that Kudus is ‘gutted’ by the setback as it could impact his chances of helping his club in the Premier League and his country at the World Cup.

Not that he will find much sympathy at his former club West Ham, where he has been christened ‘Judus’ for pushing to join the club’s rivals before declaring ‘he only wanted Spurs’ and has ‘Tottenham in his heart’.

Kudus had scored just three goals in 26 appearances for Tottenham following his move from West Ham.

The Hammers were open to selling the talented winger after a poor second season with the club in which he registered just five goals from 35 appearances.

Whatever one’s stance on Kudus as a player, there is no doubting he can be a match-winner on his day.

West Ham fans know that as well as anyone after a scintillating first season with the club following his £38m move from Ajax.

So his absence can only improve West Ham’s chances of Premier League survival and have the opposite effect on Tottenham.

Clinton Morrison adamant about West Ham in warning for Spurs and rivals

Clinton Morrison adamant about West Ham in warning for Spurs and rivals - Hammers News
Description

Pundit Clinton Morrison was adamant when asked if West Ham will stay in the Premier League and it will sound a warning to relegation rivals Spurs and co.

West Ham, bitter foes Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United are locked in a battle for Premier League survival heading into the last seven games.

The Hammers have the chance to climb out of the bottom three and above Spurs with victory over Wolves on Friday night.

That would pile pressure on new Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi from the get-go as he takes charge for the first time away at Sunderland two days later.

Morrison says West Ham have momentum and X-factor for survival

West Ham would also go level on points with Forest, who take on Aston Villa on Sunday, and one point behind Leeds, who have a tough game away at Man United on Monday night.

Victory over Wolves is vital for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side as it represents the most winnable game the Hammers have in their final seven.

This team stays up ahead of Spurs 😎

Only debate is Dinos or Todibo….

Given Tottenham, Forest and Leeds all have far superior goal differences to West Ham, the Hammers will likely have to ensure they finish at least one point ahead of one of their relegation rivals.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

The goal difference issue is worth a point to the other three teams and could well become a factor given how tight things are looking for the run-in.

Despite their vastly improved form since January 6th, Opta’s Supercomputer still makes West Ham favourites for the drop out of Tottenham, Forest and Leeds.

But that’s not how Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison sees things.

Morrison is adamant about West Ham in a warning for Spurs and their other relegation rivals.

The former Premier League striker was discussing the battle for survival and believes the Hammers will be staying up, possibly at Tottenham’s expense.

Morrison does not buy into claims West Ham have the hardest run-in. He has singled out Jarrod Bowen, Crysencio Summerville and Callum Wilson as the key to survival for Nuno’s side.

And he says Spurs were his nailed on pick for relegation until De Zerbi’s appointment given they are yet to win a league game in 2026.

Spurs were Morrison’s nailed on pick until De Zerbi appointment

“I did probably six, seven weeks ago (think West Ham were down), but if you look at all the teams that are in and amongst that bottom, they’re the team that’s got momentum,” Morrison said on Sky Sports News.

“They are the team that you can see are playing together and everyone’s on the same page, and Nuno’s been in this situation before and he’s got the experience, and they’ve got X-factors in their team. We just alluded to it, Summerville. They need Summerville back, though. He was outstanding before he picked up the calf injury. They need him back for Friday (then there is) Jarrod Bowen (too), experience like Callum Wilson in a team who will get you goals.

The Hammers have a score to settle… ⚒️ v 🐺

What do YOU want to see in Friday's six-pointer?

“So they’ve got the experience, and that’s why I look at them and think West Ham have a good chance. And everyone can say the run-in is tough. And it is tough, but the Premier League’s tough, so there’s no easy games in the Premier League anyway. But I think the momentum they’ve got at this moment in time, I do believe West Ham can get out of trouble.”

When pressed on who will drop into the Championship instead, Morrison suggested the appointment of De Zerbi has muddied the water.

“I knew you were going to ask that. I can’t predict that now,” Morrison added.

“Listen, if he (De Zerbi) hadn’t have come in, it would have been Tottenham. I’m being honest. Tottenham have not won a game in 2026. That is bonkers, by the way. It really is.”

Paul Merson says West Ham can make Spurs crumble despite Roberto De Zerbi

Paul Merson says West Ham can make Spurs crumble despite Roberto De Zerbi - Hammers News
Description

West Ham can make relegation rivals Spurs crumble despite the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi – that’s according to leading pundit Paul Merson.

Tottenham’s appointment of Roberto De Zerbi has driven almost as much debate in east London as it has the north of the capital.

With one point and one place separating Nuno Espirito Santo’s Hammers and Spurs, West Ham have more than a vested interest in the Italian tactician taking over from the hapless Igor Tudor in the Tottenham hotseat.

Had Tudor continued in the post, the Irons would have felt confident of overhauling Tottenham Hotspur in the battle to stay in the Premier League.

Merson says West Ham can have De Zerbi sinking from the start at Spurs

The arrival of De Zerbi threatens to change that with many feeling his passion and demanding nature will be enough on their own to secure the three wins that are likely needed in the last seven games for Spurs to finish above the Irons.

West Ham’s owners reacted to Spurs appointing De Zerbi, admitting they are left hoping it goes a certain way.

How worried should we be about De Zerbi joining Tottenham? 😟

But Paul Merson says West Ham can still make Spurs crumble despite the De Zerbi factor.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

The Sky Sports pundit believes De Zerbi is a top class manager but points out Tottenham have had several of those in the past.

And he says West Ham could plunge the new Tottenham boss into a situation that is hard to get out of – before his side have even kicked a ball in anger.

“They can’t afford to go down,” Merson said of Spurs on Sky Sports News, which you can see in the post below.

“If they go down, it’s just unthinkable. So you’ve got to take that chance. And whatever the bonus is (a reported £10m to De Zerbi), it’s a cup of tea in football terms if he keeps them up.

“Because if he doesn’t keep them up, everything goes out the window. You know, they’re a business now. You know, they get concerts, they’ve got go-karting, they’ve got American football. You know, you’ve got to throw another four home games on top. Then all of a sudden, you can’t be booking, you know, Robbie Williams to do a concert because you might be in the (Championship) playoffs. It (the difference financially) is huge.

Merson: West Ham win vs Wolves changes everything for Spurs

“This lad is a top, top manager that a lot of clubs would have, they would have him. But they’ve had good managers, they’ve had very good managers – and look where they are, 17th in the league.

“When they play Sunderland (next on Sunday April 12th), the worst thing that could ever happen to them is if West Ham beat Wolves (on Friday April 10th).

This team stays up ahead of Spurs 😎

Only debate is Dinos or Todibo….

“Because when they drop into that bottom three, it’s a different game, a very different game then.

“And then the pressure is severely, severely on them.”

Merson is spot on, the Hammers will climb out of the bottom three for at least 48 hours for the first time since November if they beat Wolves in that must-win clash at the London Stadium a week on Friday.

That will pile even more pressure on Spurs and De Zerbi – who many feel may take too long to get the team playing how he wants.

Sunderland is not the easiest place to go at the best of times, let alone with the season they are enjoying.

West Ham would be getting their heads above water at just the right time – while forcing Spurs under at the worst possible moment.
