Description

Arsenal have confirmed that Takehiro Tomiyasu has left the club my mutual consent.

The Japanese defender becomes the fourth Arsenal player to leave the club for free this summer, following the exits of Jorginho, Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey.

The 26-year-old has spent the last four seasons with Mikel Arteta’s side, after arriving from Bologna for just under £20 million back in 2021.

He was an important player in his first season with the Gunners, starting 20 times in the Premier League. Arsenal narrowly missed out on Champions League football that season, as they finished fifth.

However, as Arteta’s side has progressed, Tomiyasu’s role in it has diminished. In his second and third seasons he made 21 and 22 Premier League appearances respectively. Although he started in just six and ten of those matches. Finally, last season he made just one league appearance.

Tomiyasu has been plagued by injury problems for the past 18 months. A recurring knee issue ruled him out for most of last season and he played just seven Premier League minutes.

His 84th and final Arsenal appearance, and only one of last season, was a short cameo off the bench against Southampton in October.

The full-back still had another 12 months on his contract with an option to extend it for a further year. However, after slipping down the pecking order, falling behind the likes of Jurrien Timber and Ben White, Tomiyasu has agreed to terminate his contract.

The Japanese international was a valuable utility man, capable of playing anywhere in the backline. Despite this, Arteta still has plenty of depth in defence. The Gunners’ focus will remain on bringing in attacking talent in this transfer window.

Description

Tottenham have announced the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

Tel originally joined Spurs on loan on February from Bundesliga Champions Bayern until the end of the season. The Frenchman has now signed a six-year-contract until 2031 when his current loan deal expires on 30 June.

The 20-year-old is currently with the France squad at the European Under-21 Championship alongside current club teammate Wilson Odobert. He made 20 appearances for Spurs last season, scoring three goals, and was an unused substitute for their victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Spurs have agreed to pay £30 million for Tel, having already paid an £8.5 million loan fee, and he becomes the first signing made by the north Londoners since Thomas Frank was announced as manager earlier this week.

Tel moved to Bayern from Stade Rennes at the age of 17 ahead of the 2022/23 season. He made 83 appearances in all competitions for the German side, scoring 16 goals and winning two Bundesliga titles.

After the announcement, Bayern board member Max Eberl said: “Mathys Tel came to FC Bayern as a very young player and mastered his first steps at the top level of European football here. He was a popular figure in the squad, who always gave his all for the club and the team.

“The move to Tottenham has turned out to be the right one for his development. He’ll now continue this journey with Spurs. We thank him for his commitment in the FC Bayern shirt and wish him all the best for his future. Merci, Mathys!”

After confirming Tel, the Mail report Frank is understood to want Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo to join him at Spurs.

Frank signed Mbeumo for Brentford from French Ligue 2 side Troyes in 2019 and the 25-year-old has scored 70 goals in 242 games for the Bees — including 20 in the Premier League last season.

Thomas Frank to take over at Tottenham? What the Brentford boss would bring to Spurs

Thomas Frank to take over at Tottenham? What the Brentford boss would bring to Spurs - Hayters TV
Description

Tottenham are in talks with Brentford to appoint Thomas Frank as their next manager.

The Brentford boss would replace Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, who was sacked last week after two years in charge.

Frank has enjoyed a successful spell at Brentford, taking over at the club in October 2018 before winning promotion to the Premier League and establishing them in the top flight

But Frank would inherit a unique situation at Spurs, who finished a dreadful 17th in the Premier League last season despite Postecoglou having won the club’s first trophy, the Europa League, in 17 years.

So what should Tottenham fans be expecting from the arrival of Thomas Frank?

Thomas Frank’s sides can adapt

Postecoglou was criticised for a lack of adaptability during his time at Tottenham. He defended his approach on numerous occasions, telling reporters after a 6-3 defeat to Liverpool last season: “I’ve been really patient the last 18 months, answering the same questions over and over again.

“If people want me to change my approach, it’s not going to change. We’re doing it for a reason, we’re doing it because we think it’ll help us be successful.”

Postecoglou showed much more of a willingness to adapt in his side’s run in the Europa League trophy, however, with his side sitting deeper and playing on the counter-attack in the wins against Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-final and Manchester United in the final after taking the lead, while taking fewer risks.

But there was an insistence on having his team play out from the back in nearly all circumstances, even when there were bad injury problems.

Frank will bring more adaptability to Spurs. He has shown on multiple occasions that he will change his formation and style of play depending on who they are playing against.

The Dane has often been known for his physical, high-pressing approach to football, however he has also shown in big games that he can set up in a defensive block to keep the opposition out.

Thomas Frank has also been known to change his formation to suit the players that he currently has. Although he usually operates in a 4-3-3, he has also played a 4-4-2 and 3-4-3. He has also switched between more direct football, and a shorter passing game, depending on the opponent.

He has stated before that his aim is to control games and keep possession, but he will not be reluctant to change if it makes sense.

Operating on a low wage budget

It is no secret that Tottenham will not pay the same amounts in wages as the other clubs in the Premier League big six, but hiring the Brentford manager could help them bridge the gap.

As per FBref, Brentford had the 19th highest annual wage bill in the Premier League last season – only Ipswich Town paid their players less.

Despite paying such low wages, the Dane was able to steer his side to 10th in the table – nine places higher than their wage bill suggests they should have finished.

As manager of Spurs, Frank would have access to more funds but has shown he is able to overachieve based on his side’s wage bill.

Similar recruitment ideas

Tottenham and Brentford have very similar ideas when it comes to recruitment. This has led to the two clubs going for the same players on occasions.

Archie Gray and Brennan Johnson are examples of players that Thomas Frank went as far as putting in bids in excess of £30 million for, but ended up at Tottenham.

The similar approaches to football should allow the 51-year-old not only to bed in quickly, but also be happy to use the players that will already be at his disposal if he gets the job.

The concerns

There are obviously concerns about Frank too. He has shown he is a fine manager but in a fantastic environment at Brentford and one where he had the time to adapt the club to his preferred way of operating.

He also struggled when he first took over at Brentford. In his first ten games as Brentford boss he lost eight games, while at Brondby in Denmark he failed to win any of his first eight matches in charge.

At Spurs, the pressure will be greater and the patience will be less. He will need to hit the ground running. Especially given that many Spurs fans are already disappointed with the decision to sack Postecoglou just a week after winning the Europa League.

He will need a strong start to win over the fanbase. And despite the terrible league campaign, he does inherit a squad from a manager that just won the club a trophy.

Surprise surgery rules Tottenham star out of Europa League Final - Hayters TV

Tottenham midfielder Dejan Kulusevski will miss his side’s Europa League final against Manchester United after undergoing knee surgery.

The Sweden international had expected to be fit after manager Ange Postecoglou reported positively after the player sustained ‘a knock’ in the weekend home defeat by Crystal Palace.

Postecoglou is already without fellow midfielders James Maddison (knee) and Lucas Bergvall (ankle) and now the club have confirmed their star 25-year-old creator will also miss what is left of the season – including the 21 May final in Bilbao.

A statement released by the club read:

“We can confirm that Dejan Kulusevski suffered an injury to his right patella in our Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace last weekend.

“Following further specialist consultation, the midfielder has undergone surgery today and will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately.”

— Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) May 14, 2025

The new will come as a blow to both Tottenham players and supporters, who have battled through a miserable Premier League season together.

They go to Aston Villa on Friday night just one place above the relegation zone and one place below 16th placed Manchester United.

The London side have not lost to United since 2022, however, and won all three of their meetings so far this season. An upbeat Postecoglou has promised the club a trophy at the end of his second season in charge.

Victory in Bilbao next week would mark a first trophy triumph since a League Cup win in 2008. They last won a European trophy in 1984.

Manchester United are also missing a host of key players to long-term issues and Ruben Amorim is still hoping Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot will be fit in time. None of them trained, however, when the club hosted their Europa League media day at their Carrington training ground on Wednesday.

Tottenham have not won a trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2008.

Van de Ven hopes Tottenham can shed ‘spursy’ label with Europa League final win

Van de Ven hopes Tottenham can shed ‘spursy’ label with Europa League final win - Hayters TV
Description

Tottenham defender Micky Van de Ven hopes Tottenham can shed the ‘spursy’ label with victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final.

A 5-1 agreggate win against Bodo/Glimt put the north London side into a Europa League final against Manchester United.

It has been 17 years since Spurs last won a trophy and the defender believes that winning the Europa League could help to catapult the club into a new light.

“Everybody talks about Spurs not winning trophies, they talk about the ‘Spursy’ thing and it would be a big thing to change that,” van de Ven said.

“The most important part is that we are the guys and the staff that change everything for this club, ending the long drought with no trophy.”

The two sides have played each other three times this season with Spurs coming out on top each time. The most memorable of those being a 3-0 league win at Old Trafford in September.

Tottenham currently sit 17th in the Premier League and have faced criticism throughout the season but van de Ven believes this Europa league run can change the culture at the club.

“The gaffer made sure we stayed together every time, it has been a tough season for us, everybody was doubting us and now we are proving them wrong.

“The gaffer kept believing in us every time over and over again and we made sure we stayed together.

“You can see that on the pitch and off it we are a really tight group and we want to make sure we can bring this trophy home.”

Although the Dutchman doesn’t believe that the previous wins against United give his side an advantage, he is hopeful they can repeat those wins again in Bilbao.

“I would not say the previous wins are an advantage because it is games in the past. This is a final and I know in a final anything can happen.

“We have won three times against them so hopefully we can do the same thing in the final.”

How to watch Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt, team news, pre-match quotes, predicted line-ups and more - Hayters TV
Description

Tottenham Hotspur host Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the first leg of the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday night.

The two sides have never met each other before. Bodo have only faced English opposition on three occasions. They lost twice to Arsenal in 2022 and lost to Manchester United earlier this season too.

Tottenham come into the match as big favourites against the Norwegian champions. Spurs will reach their second European final this century as long as they can avoid an upset.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of the clash…

Kick-off time

How to watch in the UK

TNT Sports 2 or streaming on Discovery+

Injuries and doubts

Tottenham: Radu Dragusin (out), Heung-Min Son (out)

Spurs had been hoping that captain Heung-Min Son would be available. However, he was absent from training and Ange Postecoglou has ruled him out of the clash while he recovers from a foot problem.

Bodo: Odin Luras Bjortuft (doubt), Ole Didrik Blomberg (doubt), Patrick Berg (suspended), Hakon Evjen (suspended), Andreas Helmerson (suspended)

Bodo are missing a number of key men through suspension. Patrick Berg has played every minute of Bodo’s Europa League campaign so far but he is suspended for accumulating too many yellow cards. Hakov Evjen has also started every game for the Norwegians and he misses out for the same reason.

Predicted line-ups

Tottenham Hotspur (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Bergvall, Bentancur, Maddison; Kulusevski, Solanke, Tel

Bodo/Glimt (4-3–3): Haikin; Sjovold, Nielsen, Gundersen, Bjorkan; Fet, Auklend, Saltnes; Maatta, Hogh, Hauge

Recent form

Tottenham’s woeful Premier League form has continued, losing 5-1 at Liverpool on Sunday, and have lost the last three games in the league. They overcame AZ Alkmaar before defeating a strong Eintracht Frankfurt side on their way to this semi-final, however.

Although Bodo have won four of the last five Norwegian titles, they remain minnows on the European scene. Their 8,000 capacity stadium would be smaller than average in League Two. However, that has not stopped them so far. Bodo have already knocked FC Twente, Olympiacos and Lazio out of the competition. They have had a strong start to their league season, winning three and drawing one of their opening four games.

What’s been said?

Ahead of the match, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said: “Irrespective of how this season has gone, we have generations of fans who want this more than anything else, to share with the people that they love a special moment supporting their football club.”

Postecoglou continued: “This season could have gone a lot differently and we could be flying in the league but it wouldn’t make this opportunity any different. The opportunity is the same and I’ve made that clear to the players.”

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison agreed: “You lot talk all the time about Tottenham being without silverware for however many years it is but we’re in the last four and we’ve got a great opportunity in this competition that we’ve been pretty solid in this year.”

Bodo manager Kjetil Knutsen maintained: “I don’t think we are the favourites to win the Europa League. But we have shown that we can be competitive and we are stepping up to another level. We have never been to this level before. Can we compete with Tottenham over two matches? I don’t have the answer. Yes, I believe so.”

Description

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has ruled Heung-Min Son out of his side’s Europa League semi-final first-leg against Bodo/Glimt.

The forward has been struggling with a foot injury and has been training away from the rest of the team, having missed the last four games.

“He won’t feature tomorrow night,” Postecoglou said.

“He’s out training but he’s still separate from the group. He’s improving and hopefully we can get him back in sooner rather than later.”

Spurs take on the Norwegian side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday but ahead of the game, Postecoglou also criticised those he says are trying to “diminish” his side’s chance of reaching the final because of their dreadful Premier League campaign.

“I’ve sensed, which is not surprising because I’ve said before that this is the way this club is perceived, that people are almost trying to diminish it in some respects,” he said.

“I’ve heard people say it’s the equivalent of Man Utd winning the FA Cup. No it isn’t. I’m sorry. Not on any planet is it the equivalent.

“Others suggest that maybe we’re not worthy of Champions League. Things that are designed to diminish what’s ahead of us, which is an unbelievable opportunity.

“Irrespective of how this season has gone, we have generations of fans who want this more than anything else, to share with the people that they love a special moment supporting their football club.

“This season could have gone a lot differently and we could be flying in the league but it wouldn’t make this opportunity any different. The opportunity is the same and I’ve made that clear to the players.

“We’re disappointed obviously with Sunday and Liverpool, we were nowhere near the level we needed to be but again, that’s something we need to deal with separately.

“What we have before us is the semi-final of a European competition with an opportunity to get to a final, win a trophy and get Champions League football. I just think for the players and everyone involved at the football club it’s a brilliant opportunity.”

Tottenham host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Monday night.

Whilst Spurs’ chances of playing Champions League football next season lie solely on winning the Europa League, Forest can go back into the Premier League top three with a win.

Abdoulaye Doucouré’s last minute winner for Everton at the City Ground last week, dented Forest’s hopes of playing in Europe’s premier competition, but they will look to bounce back from that defeat in north London.

Here is what you need to know ahead of the clash…

Kick-Off time

How to watch in the UK

Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Premier League – coverage begins at 6:30pm GMT

Injuries and suspensions

Tottenham: James Maddison (doubt), Radu Dragusin (out), Son Heung-min (out)

Nottingham Forest: Ola Aina (doubt), Taiwo Awoniyi (doubt)

Predicted line-ups

Tottenham (4-3-3): Vicario; Gray, Danso, Davies, Spence, Bissouma, Sarr, Kulusevski, Odobert, Richarlison, Tel

Nottingham Forest (4-2-3-1): Sels; Williams, Milenkovic, Murillo, Moreno; Anderson, Dominguez, Elanga, Gibbs-White, Hudson-Odoi, Wood

Recent form

Tottenham come into the game off the back of a hugely important Europa League quarter-final second leg win against Frankfurt. The performance was very different from a typical Spurs display. They defended resolutely and even went long from goal kicks. Kevin Danso’s introduction from the bench to form a back five late on epitomised this. However, in the Premier League they sit in 16th position after their 4-2 to Wolves last time out.

Nottingham Forest have seen their chance of playing Champions League football hurt by losses to Aston Villa and Everton in consecutive weeks. Abdoulaye Doucoure’s late winner for Everton was a goal caused by a defensive mix up at the back – something Forest boss Nuno Espírito Santo will hope does not repeat in north London.

What’s been said?

Tottenham’s season is all about Europe now and their boss Ange Postecoglou says that they will make changes from the side that beat Frankfurt on Thursday.

“It’s fair to say it’s been challenging. But I think part of that challenge is the rotations in the team. It’s going to be similar on Monday night; we’re going to have to make five or six changes to the team.

“We just want to make sure that everyone’s sort of in the right space. I think, at the same time, we’re obviously disappointed with certain aspects of the Wolves game.”

Nottingham Forest have had a special season and Nuno Espírito Santo, Tottenham’s former head coach, is delighted by the new standards his team are being held to.

“We are delighted by the expectations, we embrace the challenge. We are not stepping back we are stepping in,” he said.

“We want to embrace it we want to try and get it. It is going to be very hard, but believe me we are stepping in and putting everything that we have into the final moments of the season.”

Latest Spurs injury news updates ahead of Europa League quarter-final second-leg - Hayters TV
Description

The latest Tottenham Hotspur injury news ahead of their Europa League quarter-final second-leg with Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday.

While Spurs suffered more Premier League pain on Sunday when they were beaten 4-2 by Wolves, their season, and perhaps the future of boss Ange Postecoglou, rest on their Europa League campaign.

Tied at 1-1, Spurs travel to Frankfurt on Thursday looking to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.

Here’s the latest on their players who have been suffering with injuries ahead of that huge game…

Dejan Kulusevski

While it was another day to forget for Tottenham against Wolves, they were at least dealt a boost with Kulusevski returning from his foot injury to come off the bench late on.

Postecoglou had previously ruled him out of starting against Frankfurt but now says it is a possibility following his earlier than expected return.

“We’ll see,” he said.

“I think it was good for Deki (Kulusevski), Richarlison and Mathys Tel to all get minutes and that will be important on Thursday night for sure. It was good to get some decent minutes into them and they all felt good.”

Kevin Danso

The Austrian defender has been absent with a hamstring injury since last month and missed out again against Wolves.

Postecoglou had stated after the 1-1 draw with Frankfurt that Danso was due to return to training shortly afterwards. “It’s touch and go,” he said. “The idea with Deki and Kevin Danso is they are due to start training with the team, if not the end of this week, tomorrow or early next week.”

It remains to be seen whether he is fit enough to be in the squad for the second leg.

Heung-Min Son

Son was a surprise absentee from the squad to face Wolves with Postecoglou revealing afterwards that he had suffered a knock in training.

He suggested it was more of a precautionary measure, however, ahead of the huge game against Frankfurt, in which the Spurs boss expects him to be involved.

“Sonny got a knock and there was no point in him traveling today,” he said.

Wilson Odobert

Like Son, Odobert is also expected to be involved in the squad for Thursday’s game having been left out completely against Wolves.

“With Wilson, as I said before, I was just managing him, but the whole idea was hopefully managing him so he can be right for Thursday night.”

Radu Dragusin

The Romanian defender is continuing his recovery from a serious knee injury and will not be back for a while yet.
